I use shampoo with sulfates... am I CrAzY?!
I use shampoo with sulfates... am I CrAzy?! Recently every video and article I find recommending hair care has a pretty strong opinion on sulfates- and a negative one! I’ve been hearing claims that sulfates ruin your hair and that they have no place in shampoo... so, why do I choose to continue to use them? Sulfates are often in products that require a lather. Their purpose is to break down oil molecules so they can attach to water. We all know the basics- oil and water don’t mix. But sulfates make this possible! With that being said, their ability to emulsify makes sulfates a “stronger” cleaning agent- which can cause irritation to sensitive skin, or strip natural oils from very fine hair. This is where sulfates get a bad rap! However, I have thick, wavy hair, which I like to wash only once a week. By the time wash day arrives I am ready to scrub my scalp and feel squeaky clean! Using shampoos without sulfates have left my hair feeling oily and flat. So.. moral of the story: sulfates are not always the enemy! They may be too abrasive if you have delicate hair color or a sensitive scalp, but if you’re looking for a super clean scrub- don’t count them out just yet!
