Knowing The Difference Saved My Skin
Hi everyone I’m B...short for Bath-she-ba. I wanted to share a skincare tip with you guys that changed my skin for the better. For the longest I have struggled with the oiliest of oily skin and could not figure out why. Until recently when I was doing research to incorporate a few new products into my routine. To simply put it: Knowing the Difference Between Hydration and Moisturizarion. I know the difference may seem obvious but these two words are often used interchangeably by the skin care community and/or brands but they do not mean the same thing. I believed for a while that because I had oily skin I should be stripping it, I shouldn’t be moisturizing it (because of the high oil production) or if I were to drink enough water that will in turn hydrate my skin and these are all MISCONCEPTIONS that are just not TRUE. So Hydration vs. Moisturization HYDRATION (Hydration = Penetration) Hydration refers to the water content within the skin. So when your using hydrating products it penetrates deeper in the skin increasing the water content. MOISTURIZATION When you are moisturizing you are locking in the hydration to protect/enhance the skins natural barrier. So when you use a moisturizer you are creating a protective barrier that will help to avoid water loss within the skin. Through all my research I had discoverd I had OILY DEHYDRATED SKIN and honestly I was blown away at the fact that oily skin could be both. I came across this video: How To Find Your Skin Type by Hyram a Skincare Specialist: https://youtu.be/vic-EMOivpA In this video he points out that and I quote “Everyone has dehydrated skin in some way or another. From what I have learned your skin type is a manifestation of the hydration level of your face. Our skin is lacking the hydration that it needs so it shows that in different ways: whether that be by producing a ton of oil on the surface of the skin or by not producing any oil at all.” So in short ***ALL SKIN NEED HYDRATION AND MOSTURIZATION*** At this point of my research everything started to make a lot more sense — if you want to reduce the oiliness or dryness in your skin you need to HYDRATE IT!! As I said before drinking water is NOT enough to hydrate the skin you also have to manually put hydration into the skin. The most effective way that I’ve found is through a HYDRATING TONER. A hydrating toner is any water based toner plus a humectant. Water + Humectant = Hydrating Toner A HUMECTANT is an ingredient found in products that helps to hydrate the skin by attracting water molecules from your surroundings/environment. They are great for rehydration and increasing the skins water content. EX:Glycerin (common) and Hyaluronic Acid (common) A toner is highly effective because they are thin and absorb at a fast rate, which means you can layer this product comfortably, without fear of it being to heavy. I layered my toner using the 7 skin Method. Find out more in my next post running out of characters (lol yikes).
A healthy skin barrier can solve your problems🌱
A healthy skin barrier can solve your skin problems! 🌱 𝗪𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐧 𝐛𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐫? It is the outermost layer of the epidermis - stratum corneum - which functions as both a chemical and physical shield against pollutants, bacteria, irritants, etc.. A healthy skin barrier can slow down aging and even help acne heal quicker while lessening its severity. When the barrier is intact, your skin appears plump, and smooth, but when it’s compromised, skin becomes dehydrated, dull, and more prone to sun damage and irritation. Sensitivity to products, tendency to break out, acne and chronic dry skin are all signs of a weakened skin barrier. Your barrier’s health has a direct impact on how your skin looks, feels, and how it ages! 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐞𝐰 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠: 1. Over-cleansing 2. Over-exfoliating 3. Washing your face using hot water 4. Using alcohol-based toner and fragrance-containing products 5. Unprotected exposure to sun’s UV rays 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐝𝐨: ~ Hydrate continuously! A damaged epidermis requires moisture, so keeping your face and body well hydrated is critical in the fight to restore your barrier. Moisture-binding humectants such as glycerin, sorbitol, and hyaluronic acid are my favorites. ~ 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐜𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬! An occlusive ingredient provides a protective seal over the surface of the skin and is critical to prevent loss of hydration. When choosing a face moisturizer, I always look for Dimethicone. If you have dry skin, choose a moisturizer with shea butter. For extra dry skin in the body, petrolatum will be your best friend. If you want something lighter than petrolatum, go for silicone based lotions. 𝐌𝐲 𝐟𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬: dimethicone, glycerin, ceramides, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, panthenol, oat and aloe extract. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: p.s all fragrance-free 𝐎𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐧: 𝐂𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐫𝐬 - ceramides, niacinamide, dimethicone, HA. affordable and effective. 𝐍𝐞𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐚 𝐇𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐆𝐞𝐥 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦 - dimethicone based. Basic, lightweight, but does a great job. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐚𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐠𝐞𝐥 - my top recommendation for oily and sensitive skin. Wonderful for people with rosacea. Calms, hydrates, and protects skin with dimethicone, aloe extract and licorice root. 𝐃𝐫𝐲 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐧: 𝐄𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐒𝐨𝐨𝐧 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦 - has panthenol and shea butter. Pretty no-nonsense. Although it has shea butter, I find this actually lightweight enough for oily skin. 𝐋𝐚 𝐑𝐨𝐜𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐚𝐲 𝐂𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐁𝐚𝐮𝐦𝐞 - multi-purpose soothing balm for dry skin irritations. Has glycerin, shea butter, panthenol. 𝐃𝐫𝐮𝐧𝐤 𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐢 - Glycerin based and combines signal peptides and amino acids. Has a long ingredients list, but overall still worked well with me. 𝐂𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐱 𝐔𝐥𝐭𝐫𝐚 𝐌𝐨𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦 - contains Riceramide®-3 blend of plant-based ceramides, natural essential fatty acids and cholesterol, combined with soothing emollients and hyaluronic acid to help relieve chronically dry skin. ❣️𝐏𝐲𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐤𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐘𝐮𝐥 is a fragrance-free brand and uses a variety of root extracts and gentle ingredients to promote barrier restoration. I highly recommend the brand too! 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐚 𝐝𝐫𝐲 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐧: Vaseline, Aquaphor or 𝐂𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 (lanolin-free) 𝐁𝐨𝐝𝐲 𝐋𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐀𝐯𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐨 𝐃𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐌𝐨𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐨𝐝𝐲 𝐋𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧- formulated with soothing oatmeal and rich emollients. Skin is healing!
Thanks for all the suggestions from my last post. It really help get my skin and it looks better than before! Below are products I use to recover my skin. BLACK GIRL SUNSCREEN - Black Girl Sunscreen SPF 30 The sunscreen by itself is very moisturizing enough to wear alone. It keeps my skin moisturize all day, gives me a beautiful flow. And the best part is that it doesn’t leave a white cast on my skin. This is the best sunscreen I ever tried! Sweet CHEF - Kale + Vitamin B Serum Shot I love this stuff! After trying the sheet mask I was convince that I needed to try the serum shot because that mask really heal the the dryness and the discomfort my face was feeling. The serum shot leaves my skin soft and very hydrate. I just don’t like how difficult it is to get the product into the dropper because the serum is quite thick. FARMACY - Daily Greens Oil-Free Gel Moisturizer with Moringa and Papaya I like this moisturizer because it light weight but still keeps my skin hydrated. It also pairs will with other products. I just didn’t care for scent. CeraVe - PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion I use this as my night time moisturizer along with the Honest face oil to lock in additional moisturizer. The formula is very light weight and it makes my skin feel soft alone. I just don’t like that I have to pump out a lot of the product to satisfy my skin. HONEST - ORGANIC BEAUTY FACIAL OIL I like this oil a lot. It pairs well with most of the moisturizers I have and it works well on my skin when I it wear alone. You can smell the lavender in it and I read some where that it’s not really good for the skin, but it’s been helping my skin. Sweet CHEF - Kale + Vitamin B Fresh Pressed Sheet Mask I mentioned how I loved this product already! esfolio - Green Tea Jelly Pack I found this gem at TJ Maxx for about $5.00 a few months ago. I wasn’t really sure how to use it and there weren’t many reviews on it as much. When my skin had that bad reaction using some of the Glow Recipe products this was the first thing I put on my face. I would wear it alone as an over night mask. And some times in the morning I would wear for 20 minutes then rinse off and proceed with my skincare routine. I really help with my drying skin and help it it hydrate. HONEST - Deep Hydration Eye Cream I notice I had a lot of dried skin on the bag of my eyes and just a little above my eye lids from using the Glow recipes Avocado Retinol eye cream. It look like premature winkles. To avoid damaging the skin more I use this eye cream to help give the skin hydration. I notice it improve my skin and the dead skin would slowly peel off.

Does “oily skin” need moisturizer? Myth busted.
A common question I get at work is “Do I still need a moisturizer if I have oily skin?”. I’m not sure when or where this myth started but a lot of people I’ve encountered have been told in the past that if you have oily skin adding a moisturizer on top is going to make your oils worse. This couldn’t be farther from the truth! Every skin type can benefit for a moisturizer, you know have to find the right one. When you cleanse your skin you have potential to strip it if it’s natural oils. In order to keep balance you have to supplement it with hydrating ingredients. I know the go to thought process with oily skin would be to take away those oils (maybe with stripping ingredients like alcohol filled toners) but if you pair it with the right moisturizer you’ll actually feel more balanced. I learned in esthetics school about the three basic types of moisturizers. You have humectants (which attract water), emollients (which smoothes the skin by filling in dry patches), and occulsives (which form a protective layer). With oily skin you’ll want to focus on humectants because you need less “oily” ingredients and more “watery” ones. These will be mainly found in gel formulas. They will be lightweight enough on the skin to where you don’t feel heavy and gross but give you the hydration your skin craves. Some of my favorites are the GLOW RECIPE - Watermelon + AHA Glow Sleeping Mask , Farmacy Daily Greens, and the Clinique ID series with the clear gel base. In the long run using gel moisturizers will actually help contribute to balancing your oil production and your skin will thank you in the long run. 🖤

Morning Vs Night Skincare Routine
There is a difference with products and routine when it comes to Morning and Night time skin care. ❤️Products and routine varies depending on skin type. This is a simple morning and night skincare routine difference for you to work with❤️ 🌞Morning Skincare Routine🌞 Morning skincare routines are lightweight and simple (3 to 4 steps) The reason your morning skincare routine should be light is because you are active during the day, wearing makeup etc. This can cause you to sweat, produce more oil, expose your skin to the elements like pollution etc. Lightweight products are water based, thinner consistency and absorb easily. Also your morning routine will maintain your skin keeping it clear, balanced and glowing. My Favorite Morning Skincare Products DR. BRONNER'S - Baby Unscented Pure-Castile Liquid Soap DICKINSON'S - Witch Hazel Liquid DERMA•E - Vitamin C Concentrated Serum SheaMoisture - 100% Virgin Coconut Oil Daily Hydration Face Lotion 🌚Night Skincare Routine🌚 Night skincare routines are heavier and have more steps ( 6 to 7) The reason why night time routines are heavier is because you are ending the day ( cleansing , removing makeover) etc and rejuvenating your skin. Night is the best time to utilize skin treatments and mask because you are getting ready to sleep. While sleeping your skin repairs itself and has the time to absorb all the benefits of your products. My Favorite Night Skincare Products Nolaskinsentials - Glycolic Foam Cleanser artnaturals - Rose Water Toner teamí - Hibiscus Infused Vitamin C Serum SheaMoisture - African Black Soap Clarifying Mud Mask SheaMoisture - 100% Virgin Coconut Oil Daily Hydration Face Lotion SheaMoisture - 100% Extra Virgin Coconut Oil Hopefully this is helpful when it comes to what you should do for a morning vs night skincare routine, any questions comment below #cheriecreator
