EXFOLIATION 101! How, what, when & why!
PHYSICAL VS CHEMICAL + SERUM VS SCRUB VS TONER! Which will you choose?! Hi everyone, welcome to Exfoliation 101. Let’s jump right into the lesson! 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭? Exfoliation is the removal of old and dead skin cells on the surface. AKA it’s how you get rid of dry, flaky, and crusty skin. 𝐰𝐡𝐲? Exfoliation removes the layer of dead skin cells that often clog our pores and keep our skin care products from penetrating deeper into the skin. Essentially, you should exfoliate to reveal brighter, softer, and healthier skin. Your serums and moisturizers will perform a lot better. 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧? 2-3x a week MAX. Over exfoliation can cause irritation and breakouts! I personally only exfoliate 2x a week for my dry skin. 𝐡𝐨𝐰? PHYSICAL - granular particals like powders, sugar, oatmeal, fruits.. etc. * scrubs can often be abrasive and do more harm than good. Always be gentle, stay away from your eyes, and don’t over do it. I recommend physical scrubs that have granular particals that are gentle and or dissolve. CHEMICAL - Acids in the form of serums or toners! * There are many types, so read below to find which one might fit your concerns best. Skip a few days in between use and WEAR SPF! ✦ AHAs > Glycolic & Lactic Acid. * works on the skin surface. Mainly helps skin texture. Can be synthetic, but mostly derived from fruits. ✦ BHAs > Salicylic Acid & tropic Acid. * deeply penetrates pores, helps skin texture & unclog pores and remove excess sebum. Ideal for acne prone skin. ✦ PHAs > Gluconolactone & Lactobionic Acid. * less irritating. Doesn’t penetrate as deep as AHA/BHAs 𝐦𝐲 𝐟𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬↴ GOOD MOLECULES - Pineapple Exfoliating Powder The best gentle physical exfoliation. + made from rice powder! Bright skin & smaller pores | Niacinamide
The SOME BY MI - AHA BHA PHA 30 Days Miracle Toner is a non-comedogenic, skin exfoliating toner formulated with AHA, BHA, PHA and Niacinamide 2%, a key ingredient used by skincare companies now which promises to help reduce the appearance of pores and improve overall skin tone. The GOOD MOLECULES - Niacinamide Brightening Toner is an alcohol-free toner with Niacinamide listed as it’s third ingredient after water and glycerin. This toner also promises to reduce the appearance of pores while providing skin with a brighter appearance, similar to the Some By Mi toner. When using the some by mi toner, you must be mindful of not using any other HAs with it, as too much can cause skin irritation. Remember HAs (hydroxy acids, not hyaluronic acid) are chemical exfoliants. When using the some by mi or any other chemical exfoliant toner, it’s best to stay away from any other HA, benzoyl peroxide and retinol/ retinoid product for the rest of the evening. Alternate your days of use with these products, and always wear sunscreen the following morning when using a chemical exfoliant at night. For reference, this toner contains .05% AHA, .01% BHA & .01% PHA. It’s relatively low, but can still be too much for sensitive skin types. However, it’s a good starter product for those wanting to try out chemical exfoliants. The good molecules toner does not contain any HAs, so it is okay to use with another product that does contain HA. This product can be used both day and night. As with any skincare product, always do a patch test to see how your skin reacts with the product. The patch test should be done on the inner arm or on the back of the ear. The some by mi toner retails for $16, while the good molecules toner is $14.

Skin-Balancing Line helps reduce oil like a pro!
As the winter gets colder and my skin gets drier, I have not been using this toner as much as I’d like, but I recognize how great it would be if I needed some oil control ASAP! The product: The Skin-Balancing Pore-Reducing Toner from Paulas Choice is supposed to do exactly what it says in the name- help reduce oil and pore size through balancing the skin! It does this with the inclusion of niacinamide as well as a handful of other superstar ingredients. If you’re on the search for a non-stripping oil controlling product, look no further! This one is a watery liquid that quickly absorbs and also helps prep your skin for the rest of your routine. My honest opinion: Though I haven’t been using this one OFTEN lately, I wanted to try it a couple months back when my skin was getting so oily in the hot humid weather. I remember how instantly hydrated + balanced my skin felt upon application and loved that. I am not sure if it would be hydrating enough for dry skin types but it is most definitely not stripping or drying. It didn’t make me break out either which I appreciate! I think it’s worth the price at it comes in a rather big bottle and will last a while. I’d mostly recommend it for oily skin types looking to hydrate + control oil.

Skincare 101: Exfoliation Basics
Exfoliation is the best way to slough away debris and dead skin cells that are sitting on top of your skin and can clog your pores. Exfoliation speeds up cell turnover. If done correctly, it leaves you with healthier and happier looking skin, and makes moisturizing and applying actives more effective. There are two types of exfoliators: 𝐩𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐱𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 ~ are body scrubs and products formulated with grainy particles that provide the actual scrubbing sensation. I think the best physical exfoliating method is, still, the use of 𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐭𝐡 — which most of us already have at home. Gentlest of them all, and is even safe to use nightly. Simply dampen the washcloth in warm water, add your cleanser, and rub in small circles beginning at the forehead and working your way down - be sure to use medium pressure. I also love 𝐏𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐆𝐞𝐥𝐬. My favorites are Cure - Natural Aqua Gel and Pyunkang Yul - Pyunkang Yul Peeling Gel . While they don’t exactly fall under the category of physical or chemical exfoliators , I find them innovatively helpful and safe even for sensitive skin. Peeling gels use high acidity ingredients and utilizes a blend of surfactants like dicocodimonium chloride and carbomers that help to bind oils together to attract and remove dead skin. I also enjoy using facial scrubbers like the DERMAFLASH - Dermapore Ultrasonic Pore Extractor & Serum Infuser 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐱𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 ~ use acids such as glycolic acid, salicylic acid, or retinoid to mildly exfoliate deeper the skin. One of the main benefits of chemical exfoliation is that it does not require scrubbing, so it’s less likely to cause major irritation to the skin. I have written about AHAs and BHAs in my recent posts -- do check them out if you’d like to learn more about the ingredients🙈Most results aren’t seen until 4-8 weeks with chemical exfoliators. Some of my favorites are: Neutrogena - Rapid Clear, Stubborn Acne, Daily Leave-On Mask PAULA'S CHOICE - Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliator The Ordinary - Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution janssen - Retino-A 0.05% Tretinoin Cream Curology - Curology formula Still not sure how to exfoliate? you can actually use both a chemical and physical exfoliator if you’d like to. I personally find alternately using two types beneficial for me (don’t overdo it!). Skincare is a tough job. It’s best to listen to your skin, try out different methods, and you’ll learn what works best for you eventually❤️

Oil Control Toner from Origins
The Origins Pure Purifying Toner with Saw Palmetto and Mint is a toner meant for those with oily skin to reduce excess oil and leave skin with a smooth/matte finish without over drying. This has the texture of any other watery toner – but if you shake it up, it gets bubbly when the product mixes together (see the second picture). I don’t use this product so much anymore but I was loving it when I was going through some hormonal changes after I gave birth and my skin got SUPER oily (Warning: I have read that Saw Palmetto is not safe to use while pregnant so definitely consult your doctor if you are pregnant before checking this out!) Prior to using this, I could use 1-2 blotting papers on my skin no problem. So when I discovered this toner I definitely wanted to give it a try. It has a cooling/minty sensation on the skin which is so refreshing and a minty fresh scent. I really enjoyed this product – I do feel like it helped to soak up excess oil and keep my skin more matte & less oily throughout the day. It didn’t eliminate all of the oil but it certainly helped. I didn’t find it dried out my skin and I didn’t have any sensitivity or break outs with this product. I think the price is right ($24 for 5 oz) – this is will last you awhile! If you are already using a toner in your routine, you won’t be adding any extra steps. If you aren’t using a toner in your routine – use this right after cleansing….Just mix up the bottle and put a small amount on a cotton round and swipe all over your face. Overall I would rate this 4/5 stars and would recommend for my oily skin pals out there!ORIGINS - Zero Oil Pore Purifying Toner

My Mental Wellness Improved Through My Self AcceptanceWhen I was around 13 or 14 years old, I remember routinely taking one of my older sister’s black eyeliner pencils before school every morning. I’d arrive early so that I could slip away to the girl’s bathroom to apply a single black line to my eyelids. My parents didn’t allow me to wear any makeup at the time. Although this smudgy line on my eyelids didn’t make me look all that much different, I never felt comfortable at school without it. My teenage mind convinced myself that I needed some sort of cosmetic symbol in order to appropriately express my femininity. Up until that point in my life, society had told girls that looked like me - tall, Black, and with kinky hair - that we somehow weren’t as beautiful as the other girls. For far too long, I believed it too.Feb. 17
