What is fungal acne and how do I treat it?
What is fungal acne Fungal acne looks a lot like hormonal acne or bacterial acne, but the culprit isn’t the same as other types of acne. Instead, it is an overgrowth of yeast that hangs around in the hair follicles. Malassezia infects hair follicles in a similar way that acne bacteria does. Fungal acne appears as inflamed, itchy, acne-like eruptions that are really pus-filled bumps. The telltale difference is that fungal acne can be itchy, and regular acne is not. Other clues: fungal acne is generally uniform in size and shape, and appears in clusters of small whiteheads. How to know for sure that you have fungal acne Your acne doesn’t respond to over-the-counter or prescription acne treatments, or they make the problem worse. Your acne feels itchy or burns to the touch. You have other signs of fungal overgrowth, like dandruff, tinea versicolor, psoriasis, eczema, etc. How to Treat It Dandruff is also caused by Malassezia fungus—just by a different species of the bug—so a shampoo like Head and Shoulders, which contains the antimicrobial ingredient zinc pyrithione, could help to fight off a fungal breakout. I recommend the dandruff shampoo Selsun Blue, as simple as a body wash, after two weeks of use, my fungal acne improved. When in doubt, see a dermatologist.
Vitamin C for Acne Prone Skin!
If you’re familiar with my content you know I’m a big fan of the Volition Strawberry-C Serum. It’s a great vitamin C serum that is fungal-acne safe and I’ve found doesn’t exacerbate existing breakouts and helps to minimize the appearance of acne scars. Vitamin C serums are great for acne prone skin because it helps to brighten and even out the complexion. This serum is powered by vitamin-C derived from strawberries and is targeted at normal, dry, combination and oily skin types looking to combat enlarged and clogged pores, dryness, dullness and uneven texture. What makes this product such a standout to me is its consistency and it’s ability to work well alongside literally any other product I layer it up with. I find with acne-prone skin, it’s easy to overwhelm the skin with product and lead to more bumps and texture. With this serum, the viscous but very spreadable pink serum glides over the skin and sinks in immediately, ready for the next products to be layered on top. I’ve been using this serum for a little under a year now and I have a back up ready to go when I run out! I decided to try this serum because I was interested in the brand Volition first of all, and second of all because I was intrigued by the use of strawberries in this formula. I’m really appreciating how brands are branching out from oranges to find other ingredients to derive vitamin C from. This formula includes both strawberry fruit and strawberry seed extract to brighten dull skin, unclog pores and remove excess oil. I definitely feel like this does what it says it does by the way it feels on my skin both after application and throughout a day’s wear. Other standout ingredients include Kakadu plum to reduce the appearance of redness that may be from PIH or from active breakouts, as well as reinforcing skin’s luminosity. Of course it also includes hyaluronic acid, a staple ingredient to plump up skin. While a lot of formulas containing hyaluronic acid seem to overwhelm my skin (particularly in the humid months, as hyaluronic acid extracts moisture and gives it to the skin), I find this formula has hit the perfect sweet spot of plumping and moisturizing without going into overdrive. The ingredients list is also super clean which of course I appreciate. It’s got Cucumber water, radish root extract, the strawberry derivates discussed, sodium hyaluronate, and ascorbic acid as the first few ingredients and there’s not much else to it! I really love this serum. It’s not the most potent vitamin C serum I’ve tried by any means, but it does gently and effectively combat redness and control oil while keeping my skin moisturized and clear of impurities. I’d recommend this to anyone with acne prone skin fighting minor discoloration or with fungal acne seeking a serum that won’t feed the malessezia on the skin. It’s not cheap, $42 for 1 oz, but it lasts a very long time and I’m not even halfway through this bottle. If you seriously struggle with dark spots I’d suggest looking elsewhere for a stronger vitamin C, but if you’re looking for maintenance this is a great option. It spreads out like a dream and works wonderfully with every product I’ve used in combination with it (and there have been many!) 5/5 from me for my particular skin needs (combination, acne prone, dehydrated)!

Fungal Acne (malassezia folliculitis) cleared?
Nizoral- anti dandruff shampoo Day one-first picture Day two-Second picture Day three- third picture Day four- last picture After the first week, my fungal acne was completely cleared up. Obviously we are in quarantine and I was not able to visit a dermatologist. I recommend you watch Dr. Dray on YouTube to or Cassandra Bankson. Dr. Drag is a dermatologist and Cassandra is a specialized esthetician. They helped me learn what skin condition I had, what to stay away from, what caused and triggered the reaction.
What is Fungal Acne? How to get rid of it quick
If you have small bumps like the photo above you have Pityrosporum folliculitis aka “fungal acne” You can treat this condition easy and fast with one simple product! Ketoconazole 2% gel or cream is the best and fastest way to get rid of small bumps on your face, chest or back. 1) Ketoconazole gel 2% xogel A better alternative to the gel topical is nizoral shampoo which be found at drugstores around the world. Nizoral - A-D Shampoo
As I wait for my dermatologist appointment to determine whether or not the stubborn slight bumps on my forehead are fungal acne, I’ve gone through pretty much my entire collection using an ingredient database to parse out what products are fungal-acne safe and sadly, not a ton of them are. However, a few of my favorites do not feed the Malassezia yeast, and I wanted to bring those forward for any of you who may be suffering from stubborn bumps (I’d be happy to do a post all about fungal acne in detail if thats something you’re interested in!) The first is not a skincare product per-se but something that I would consider vital to reducing fungal acne and that is a product containing ketoconozole or another anti fungal. I’ve been using Nizoral shampoo on my damp face and leaving on for about 5 minutes. It hasn’t irritated my skin and I do think my bumps have subsided, likely from a mix of using this and reducing my use of Malassezia-feeding ingredients Volition Strawberry-C is one of my all time favorite vitamin C serums and so I am so glad to say it is fungal acne safe. 5/5 already have repurchased! Bybi beauty Bakuchiol is a retinol alternative in oil that is fungal acne safe. I haven’t been using it long enough to tell if it has made a difference in terms of what it is meant to do, but it has been a great last step in my routine as both a retinol and a moisturizer and it has not irritated my skiN! 5/5 Beautybio the daily vitamin C day serum with antioxidant complex* is a new addition to my collection but I really appreciate that the vitamin C (magnesium ascorbyl phosphate) is the second ingredient on the ingredient list after water, so I feel better about the $75. Plus, it has urea which fights fungal acne! Kosmetic Immunity Luminous Skin-Defense Moisturizer* has quickly become a staple in my routine. It is a gel-like formula that glides on effortlessly and leaves my combo skin feeling the perfect amount of moisturized. It strengthens the skin’s barrier making it great for sensitive skin types, or people like me who sometimes overdo it on the active ingredients. It makes your complexion luminous and I definitely feel like my skin is more firm and supple after using this for about a month and its one of the only moisturizers I have that is fungal acne safe! *products were gifted but thoughts are always my own
