Exfoliation 101 - Let's burst some myths!
Exfoliation 101 - Let's burst some myths!
Let's get to know about exfoliants more! No matter if you're a skincare junkie, expert or just a beginner, skin exfoliation can be very tricky and confusing and most of the mainstream skin advices can be minimally backed by science and geared towards selling the product or giving you false information. That's how skincare myths are formed. I'm talking about some pretty known myths about Exfoliation : ✨Like, Physical exfoliants/scrubs are bad for your skin and they cause micro-tears that lead to infection or they're worse than Chemical exfoliants: Physical exfoliants that contain irregular granular sizes and shapes are definitely going to irritate your skin. But if you're a well-experienced skincare person or someone who knows how to handle gentle, small granular exfoliants well like professionals, in such hands it can be a very effective. Take Micro-dermabrasion or Dermaplaning for instance. If you haven't done it before it's likely to cause you some irritation, I wouldn't say damage as it's a truly strong and deep term to use. Our skin can naturally heal itself to a large degree, that self-healing capability can be overstressed with exogenous (outside/physical) factors and sometimes Indogenous (inner) factors such as your ethnicity, genetics and some skin conditions like dermititis, rosacea or psoriasis. So, my point here is, the myth that only physical exfoliators cause any damage to our skin is incorrect. On top of that, physical exfoliants cause micro-tears is a far stretched myth that doesn't have enough scientific evidence to support. The thing about it is anything harsh on our skin is going to cause inflammation and redness but chemical exfoliants can cause the same if done too much. For our skin to break or tear and get a cut there needs to be a lot of pressure and sharpness to the object. The scrubs don't necessarily tear/cut our skin unless you're rubbing it too harsh or with a lot of pressure and over-doing it. Chemical exfoliators can overstress and irritate our skin at the same degree as well, if overdone. Damage is a strong word for any skincare regimen that is backed by science. It's a fairly vast topic to discuss here but here's the crux of the topic that I'm trying to highlight. Not over-exfoliating is the only key to keep our skin healthy and non-irritated. Be it physical or chemical exfoliants. We need some of the dead skin cells on our Stratum Corneum. Meaning, we should let our Stratum Corneum have a layer of some dead skin cells along with it's biome. The diverse yet integrated functions of the SC collectively serve to detect, protect, respond, and/or adapt against several exogenous factors. Now, why I like or majority of people like chemical exfoliants is because they seem to be hustle free, you apply a thin layer and leave it overnight or for few minutes and it thins down our Stratum Corneum that is the deal skin cells on our skin as well as penetrates deeper in skin and decongests it. But for many people chemical exfoliants can be quite intimidating and if they like to do manual Exfoliation it's totally fine as long as they're not putting a lot of pressure and overdoing it. ✔️👍 I like both physical and chemical exfoliation. I use these chemical facial peeling solutions or masks as well as gentle scrubs to take care of my dead skin. These are some of the exfoliators I use. I fell in love with this exfoliating cleanser when I tried a sample packet after it was first released last year. I had just experienced a string of weird smelling & stripping cleansers... This was so refreshing, just what my skin was looking for! And it’s gentle & safe for daily use. ⚠️IMPORTANT⚠️ DO NOT USE IF YOU ARE ALLERGIC TO STRAWBERRIES❗️🍓 fresh - Sugar Strawberry Exfoliating Face Wash First off, the smell is amazing! And not to be weird... but if you get it in your mouth it actually tastes good... lol It doesn’t smell like real strawberries or strawberry candy... hard to describe, definitely strong notes of brown sugar with a lighter fruity floral aroma. Very light & refreshing. It actually makes me look forward to washing my face (I have a physical disability & some days, you know little things can be hard) My skin can flare up & get red pretty easily from both physical & chemical exfoliants, but this always leaves me feeling fresh faced & definitely not dried out. ✨The first 2 ingredients are glycerin & sugar, both natural humectants, drawing moisture from the environment into the skin. It also contains hydrating grape seed oil that will help remove makeup. ( I recommend removing makeup with an oil based cleanser first, I don’t use this around my eyes at all. 🍓The 4th ingredient is strawberry extract, a very potent source of brightening vitamin C. Strawberries actually contain more vitamin C than oranges! 🍊 Strawberries contain two exfoliative acids: alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) and ellagic acid. 💗I made some slides that go into more detail about the ingredients. So I’ve been using this for a little over a year & my skin is so much smoother than before. I used to have lots of the little bumps on my chin/ under bottom my lip. But I’m not saying you need a year of use to see results. I noticed amazing results in less than 2 weeks of 2x daily use after I had a long hospital stay with out anything but a simple moisturizer. My skin was very congested & unhappy from wearing a mask almost all day everyday in the ER. If you’re scared of exfoliants or have had bad experiences with either physical or chemical exfoliants, I suggest you try this! The sugar melts away as you exfoliate. I never get anything gritty in my eyes or nose, because the sticky texture makes it easy to control & it rinses nice & clean with out any yucky stripping feeling. You can easily customize it by adding more or less water/ changing duration of exfoliation time💗 Fyi- it’s not “limited edition”, just the jumbo 6.7 oz was ($44) I do love that Fresh offers jumbo & mini sizes sometimes. $33/4.2 oz & $15/1.6 oz🍓

Exfoliation 101 – Wisdom for Acne-Prone & Simultaneously Aging Skin
Exfoliation 101 – Wisdom for Acne-Prone & Simultaneously Aging Skin
Exfoliation is a tricky but necessary aspect of properly caring for your skin. You may think that cleansing alone is doing the trick, but dead skin cells build up and need to be resurfaced for a more bright, rejuvenated, and glowing appearance. If you scrub too hard, the skin barrier will become inflamed or damaged. If you do not scrub at all, your skin becomes unevenly textured and dull in coloration. If you are battling adult-acne, you sadly can’t use many of the BEST anti-aging products. This is because the formulas are often too thick or concentrated, leading to increased blemishes. It is a confusing dance to learn the ins and outs of exfoliation, especially with the party of combination skin. But here are the tricks that worked for me! About my skin: ·       European/White/Cherokee Native American Ethnicity/background ·       Very acne-prone; cystic, scarring, uneven skin tone ·       Battling aging at the same time (age: 25) ·       Oily in some places, dry in others, very fun! One of my favorites is a product that I discovered in France a few Summers ago while living abroad (shipping worldwide) is the Deep Cleansing Exfoliator by Caudalie. Here is a bit about the regimen: ·       I use this product about twice per week, to avoid over-exfoliating and causing skin irritation (or more breakouts). ·       I use about a nickel-sized amount, pretty generously. You can use a pea-sized drop, whatever feels right! This simple and ‘whipped’ texture is very gentle while somehow feeling like gritty sand. Just as your face feels refreshed from saltwater and the beach, this formula feels like it is giving me a new layer of skin! A brighter, clearer, smoother, and healthier layer of skin!! This gritty product works deep yet somehow is lightweight like a cloud. It has dramatically enhanced the clarity of my skin and has been a real gamechanger. Thank goodness I do not have to fly to France every time I need it, or there would be trouble! Please note – This is simply what has worked for me as the best exfoliant used to date. What works for my skin may not work for your skin. There are mechanical, chemical, or topical exfoliations available on a crowded marketplace. To set honest expectations - You will have to experiment with different exfoliation products to find the right fit for your skin. Tips for exfoliation: ·       You have to find your own frequency. You can exfoliate every day, and this only works for some skin-types; for others, this can lead to increased breakouts. You want to preserve the natural Ph and balance of your skin, while still forcing it to regenerate new skin cells. ·       If you do exfoliate daily, do so GENTLY! ·       Do not use harsh exfoliants that have things like plastic microbeads, shells, volcanic rock, or accidental particles that get thrown into the natural concoction. These are commonly used in cheaply-made or under-researched products, leading to microtears in the skin. To avoid, purchase your product from a trusted and reputable skin-care brand. ·       Always moisturize afterward. Since my skin is acne-prone, I have to opt for oil-free options. Be very careful with chemical peels or mechanical options as they are literally peeling away a layer of the skin. Chemical peels can lead to scarring and infection, on top of the sheer pain. I personally recommend opting for a more gentle topical option, such as the Caudalie line for skin detoxification. Experiment slowly, and you will find the right regimen of products and frequency for your skin type. Starting early will always be better than starting late!

All-in-one exfoliation?! {chemical & physical}
All-in-one exfoliation?! {chemical & physical}
Whether you’re a seasoned chemical or physical exfoliation vet, or you’re new to the party, it’s important to understand the purpose of exfoliating. Exfoliating can help remove dead skin, slough off dry patches, smooth, reduce acne scars and texture, unclog pores, and make your skin look brighter by encouraging cell turnover. Chemical exfoliation uses acids, such as alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) and beta hydroxy acids (BHA), and/or enzymes. These chemicals help to dissolve/loosen dead skin cells. Chemical exfoliation is generally safe to do a few times per week, depending on your skin type and the strength of the product you’re using. Read directions and consult your doctor. Physical exfoliation uses small particles to scrub away dirt and dead skin. Look for gentle physical exfoliants, such as jojoba beads and rice powder. Avoid larger, more coarse particles such as nut shells because they can damage your skin. Physical exfoliation should be done less frequently to avoid over-irritation. Both kinds are great for your skin, and all skin types can benefit. Yes, even dry skin (like me)! My ideal combo is to use both methods at least 1x/week. My current top pick for an all-in-one exfoliator is the GOOD MOLECULES - Pineapple Exfoliating Powder . It contains rice powder (physical), vitamin C, and fruit enzymes (chemical). You simply pour out some powder and add water. The powder dissolves in a couple drops of water into a grainy, milky foam. Add more water for less physical exfoliation. My skin is left feeling smoother every time, and never feels stripped or irritated. I use 1x/wk. It’s unscented and suitable for all skin types. At $16, this is a great option for gentle all-in-one exfoliation! Available on Beautylish (although currently sold out). Item was gifted by brand w/o obligation.

Hello🌞You must know the importance of cleaning your face. I have combo-oil skin, not sensitive. I have acne-prone skin, and I have some dark spots. So I started building up my tolerance for acid since long-time ago. Today, I want to talk about my fav and meh products!   pixi - Glow Tonic Concentration 🍋🍋🍋 How to Use It: Apply on cotton pads, gently rub the face  It is alcohol-free, which means it is a glycolic acid product that is very good for sensitive skin. It also formulated with witch-hazel and Aesculus to mitigate the irritation. My face does not feel dry after using it. It is good at lock in hydration. So dry skin will really like it. Also, if you don't have any experience using acid, this is a good beginning. I have used half of the bottle. It does not have a strong effect on getting rid of whiteheads, but it can be a good exfoliating product. It is really worth the price. I always repurchase when it is on sale.  SK-II - Facial Treatment Essence (Pitera Essence) Concentration🍋🍋🍋🍋 How to Use It: Apply on cotton pads, gently rub the face It includes Lactic acid, Malic acid, Salicylic acid. It is a combination of those acid, and it is for secondary cleanse. Comparing with Pixi, this one has more exfoliating power. It is better for combo oil and oily skin. If your skin is thinner, I recommend you only use it twice or three times a week. After using it, my face feels a bit dry. So it is good to use with hydrating products. It is quite expensive though. If you don't have enough budget for cleansing product, I won't recommend this one to you.  Cle De Peau Essential Correcting Refiner How to Use It: Apply on cotton pads, gently rub the face  It only has Succinic acid, which makes it different from the previous products. I feel like it has a high alcohol concentration. I can even smell the alcohol after I apply it on my face. But it actually feel good on my face. I feel refreshed after using it. It is a good choice for morning routine. But make sure you are not allergic to alcohol. It is very expensive.  CLINIQUE - Clarifying Lotion 2 For Dry Combination Skin How to Use It: Apply on cotton pads, gently rub the face  It has an obvious smell of alcohol. My face felt burned after using it. I really don't like it. I am using it to wipe my table now. It actually works quite well. BTW I don't like this design. It is so inconvenient to pour it out. The mouth is way too big, to the point I think you can even drink it... Have you used any of these product? How do you like it? 💞

My exfoliator series!!
My exfoliator series!!
I loveeeee to exfoliate and address one of my biggest skin concerns, texture. I’m just starting my skin care journey and these three were my first pick ups. Turmeric and apple cider vinegar are some of my favorite ingredients in cooking and also hair care. Turmeric is a great anti inflammatory and antioxidant and is known as a brightened of the skin as well. Apple cider vinegar has been known to treat blood pressure and also scalp conditions so I thought it would be a great gentle exfoliate for my face. Let’s start with the turmeric exfoliating mask. This mixed physical exfoliation with chemical. It has rosehip seeds and quartz which you can physically work in after leaving the mask on for awhile. The Bha comes from aspen bark and papaya. My skin does feel slightly softer after using this but not enough to pay 48 again. The brightening effect is minute as well. Now the Apple cider vinegar pads come in a box for 72(ridiculous) and a smaller sample box for 12. Thank god I got the sample because this did nothing for me. Maybe the acid is too gentle but I was extremely disappointed. Guess I will continue to ingest it via the gummies to get the benefits Finally, we have wishful yo glow which I will repurchase. It uses aha and bhas only and really smooths out my skin. It is reasonably priced at 39 and is available as a mini for 21. My downside is that it is heavily fragranced and it took time for me to cope with that. The product balls up and it isn’t dead skin alone but I believe the cellulose in the product clings to dead skin cells which I clearly see as the product which is white will turn grayish brown as I work it into my skin. Did I rant or what lol, I will continue my hunt for the perfect exfoliators for my collection and update u guys as I try them
