Reviewing My Followers Skincare Routines pt. 1
Hey y’all! In today’s post I’ll be reviewing my followers skincare routines! I went through some of y’all’s accounts in search of some routines, then messaged everyone to make sure they were okay with me using their routines in this post! This is only pt. 1 because this post got wayyy to long to include everyone at once! Let me start by saying I’m not an esthetician or dermatologist, nor have I ever claimed to be. I am just a fellow skincare lover who knows a lot about ingredients in skincare. We’re starting off with @Chloe_McRae. Sometimes she decides to double cleanse, and when she does she starts with the#Holifrog - Kissimmee Vitamin F Therapy Balmy Wash[products]#[FourStars] which is $42 for 2.5 fl oz. This has a ton of great hydrating oils, as well as Vitamin F, which is great for helping cell turnover. I would say it’s a great first cleanse for those with dry skin. Next she uses theDRUNK ELEPHANT - Beste No. 9 Jelly Cleanser Deluxe Sample which is $32. I would say this is a good cleanser. The cleansing agents are gentle and non stripping, and it also has glycerin which is hydrating, and cantaloupe fruit extract which is a hydrating extract full of antioxidants. Other than that, this is a pretty basic cleanser. Next she uses the HERBIVORE - Prism 20% AHA + 5% BHA Exfoliating Glow Facial l which is $58. Because the name is confusing, it’s a gel face mask. This stuff looks gorgeous and the ingredients are too. Along with AHA and BHA, it has aloe and rose water which help your skin to retain moisture. I don’t think it’s worth $58, but it’s pretty good. Next is the PEACH & LILY - Wild Dew Treatment Essence which is $39 for 3.38 fl oz. This essence has glycerin, Nicinamide, and Hylaronic acid. For $39 I expected a lot more. In general, essence is less effective than a serum, so this seems a little expensive for what you get. Then comes theDRUNK ELEPHANT - Sweet Biome Fermented Sake Hydrating Spray which is $42. Yes, $42 for a face mist. Now looking at the ingredients this has glycerin and a small amount of Hylaronic acid. The rest of the ingredients are extracts. Thankfully there isn’t fragrance, but this is a no because it’s so expensive. And finally is the COSRX - BHA Blackhead Power Liquid which is $24. Really this has some Willow water and Nicinamide and that’s it. Okay I freaked out at this point. Nowhere in this routine is sunscreen or moisturizer!!! Nooooo!! We need less acids and more of the basics. Overall I’d say this routine has too many steps. I think you could simplify down to a double cleanse, a cheap but good serum with Hylaronic acid and Nicinamide which seem to be the ingredients that work well for your skin, and the a moisturizer and some spf. Our next routine comes from @WillWorkforMascara. She starts her routine with theCeraVe - Foaming Facial Cleanser For Normal To Oily Skin w is $17. This product is great for oily skin, which she has. It has glycerin, nicinamide, and Hylaronic acid so it’s super hydrating. Next she usesThe Ordinary - Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution witch is $8.70. Along with glycolic acid, it has aloe vera water and glycerin. Some people think it’s overly stripping, but for oily skin its great. Now this is where this routine becomes international. She goes in with theMUJI - Boosting Essence Lotion which is $7 for 50 ml. This essence has aloe vera juice and glycerin. It does have quite a bit of fragrance though which makes it a no from me. Next she goes in with the#Pearlessence - Argan Oil + Vitamin E facial oil[products]#[ThreeStars] which is $11.89 for 1.83 fl oz. This product has two ingredients. Vitamin E and Argan oil. Now this is where we really go international. #Human Nature - Sunflower Eye Cream[products]#[TwoStars] and found out that 295 Cuban Peso is $12.29. Now as for the ingredients this eye cream has sunflower oil and glycerin. And fragrance. Fragrance can especially be irritating around the eye area so this is another no. Instead try some thing likeTHE inkey LIST - Caffeine Eye Cream She also uses a eyebrow and eyelash oil called Peach Thy Lash which is 150 Cuban Peso or $6.25. I don’t know anything about this kind of product so I can’t really say if it works. And finally is theLANEIGE - LANEIGE Lip Sleeping Mask which is $22. This mask has Vitamin C, Hylaronic acid, and glycerin. It seems good to me, but this sort of product is more about the experience, and I haven’t tried it. Again! We need moisturizer and sunscreen! This one also has too many steps so let’s simplify it to cleanser, toner, moisturizer, sunscreen, eyelash oil, and lip mask. Unfortunately this post would be super long if I included everyone, so look out for pt. 2 coming soon! Please cheer for this post if you liked it, comment below your holy grail skincare products, and follow me to join the family and for similar content! -Mae

Clean Beauty 🌱 Fad Or Real Deal?!
As the beauty world continues to grow, we are seeing more and more brands either starting out or reformulating to be considered a clean beauty brand. This movement reminds me all too well of when eating organic & staying away from preservatives became a major lifestyle trend, and continues to be to this day! People are constantly finding ways to better themselves, whether it’s better healthier habits, better exercise, and now clean beauty for flawless looking skin. The question is: Is this just a fad or is clean beauty really the road to the best skin one can have? Up until around November of 2019, I didn’t really have a strict skincare regime. I washed my face in the shower with drugstore products like Clean & Clear scrub, and use whatever moisturizer was laying around. I didn’t use face masks, under eye gel patches, and I had no idea what toner or essence was! 😂 It really wasn’t until I started my makeup beauty account on IG almost a year ago that I started learning about skincare routines and how important it was to have one. But as I said, it wasn’t until November 2019 that I discovered Drunk Elephant, clean beauty, layering / mixing, and listening to my skin’s needs (needs more hydrating products, nourishing products, pore clearing products, etc). I will 100% stand by and say that my skin has never looked better since using Drunk Elephant products. But because I do try out and test products for IG, I can’t sit here and say it’s ALL I use. But I can tell you that my skin definitely reacts now (and I don’t have sensitive skin either!) when I use certain products because it is so accustomed to DE and their wonderful, beneficial ingredients. So do I think you can only have flawless looking skin using clean beauty products? No. I had relatively nice skin, no acne issues or breakouts, before having a proper skincare regime. There are also plenty of clean beauty brands that are affordable on the market like The Inkey List & Good Molecules. I think the key to great looking skin is just by listening to your skin’s needs, testing new products out in small skin patches to prevent reactions, and just using a trial and error method. What works for one person may not work for the next, and that’s perfectly fine. That’s the beautiful thing about this beauty community - there are an endless amount of options for everyone to find something that works for them!

Battle of the Cleansers! 🧼 PART TWO
I have so many cleansers I had to make two posts about it! Here’s the second half, be sure to read part one for the other cleansers I reviewed. MY SKIN: Dry, crazy sensitive, prone to redness with a few breakouts here and there but nothing crazy. DISCLAIMER: This is just my personal experience with the products and I by no means speak for everyone’s experience. Maybe you love these products, and if they work for you, that’s amazing! If they don’t, I hope you find something that does! But if you haven’t and are looking into any of these products, I hope I can help you make an informed decision. Thanks! fresh - Sugar Strawberry Exfoliating Face Wash this product highlights sugar and strawberry to exfoliate and brighten skin. My honest opinion: I know, I know, scrubs are bad and evil. I hear it all the time. However, every time I use an exfoliating active my skin loses its mind and turns bright red and can sometimes sting for a whole 24 hours after I use it. Until I find an active that doesn’t completely destroy my skin, I’m sticking to scrubs. Sugar is a great scrub since it dissolves with water, meaning the risk of over-scrubbing is minimized. And I scrub VERY gently. Since my primary concern with exfoliating is dead skin and not acne, this works just fine for me. It’s definitely one of the most gentle scrubs I’ve used, so if you just need to use a scrub like me, this is a great one to use. DRUNK ELEPHANT - Beste No. 9 Jelly Cleanser Deluxe Sample This product highlights cantaloupe and glycerin as it’s key ingredients to deeply cleanse all of the day’s impurities. My honest opinion: I used to use this as my summer cleanser daily for a long time. This is probably my 3rd bottle of it. So what happened? This cleanser did wonders for my skin when I lived in a hot and sweaty environment to clean all the gunk and full face of makeup off of me. But my life changed (and lbr so did the world) this year. I live in on a completely different side of the world and I stay indoors, rarely wear makeup and my skin has gotten a lot drier and this cleanser just doesn’t do it for me anymore. The surfactants are too stripping for dry skin. So, I’m breaking up with this cleanser. YOUTH TO THE PEOPLE - Superfood Antioxidant Cleanser This product highlights kale, green tea, spinach, and vitamins B, C, and E to remove buildup and balance pH without drying. My honest opinion: Y’all, I am IN LOVE with this cleanser. I picked up the YTTP Mini kit and used the whole bottle up and purchased the full size without a second thought! The INCI list is short and sweet, full of antioxidants and just feels amazing. I walked around sephora with it and every single person I saw was like “yes that’s my fave!” Honestly this is a stellar cleanser for dry skin and I highly recommend it. Full disclosure it does have fragrance and chlorophyll as the last two ingredients, but I haven’t had an issue with it. Big love!!

Drunk Elephant Empties 🐘
I think I got these products as part of the Sephora birthday special last year and finally got around to trying them! In general, I think DE is an overrated, overpriced brand. I’m not a fan of how they handled their response to BLM, nor their customer service. But that being said, I tried to be honest and fair about reviewing these products. DRUNK ELEPHANT - Protini Polypeptide Cream I was pleasantly surprised by this product! Texture: it is a cream, but it does not feel very heavy or sticky. I would compare the texture to in between a cream and a lotion. Scent: this product didn’t smell like anything to me and does not have fragrance. Application: the travel/sample size comes in a little jar with a screw-on lid. I washed out and am keeping the empty jar to store creams when I travel. Results: I used this nightly as my PM moisturizer. It feels very smooth and silky on the face and kept my face hydrated throughout the night. It didn’t aggravate my acne or cause additional breakouts, but I did notice some stinging on my neck a few times when I applied it there—so I’m taking 1 star off since I experienced a little irritation. I think it’s a nice moisturizer that is occlusive without being too heavy, but I won’t be repurchasing as I’m not sure how much I buy into the peptides marketing, and the price for the full size (almost $70 for 1.69 oz) is ridiculous in my opinion 🤷🏻♀️ I personally think there are many cheaper and better moisturizers out there. DRUNK ELEPHANT - Beste No. 9 Jelly Cleanser Deluxe Sample Unfortunately, I think this is one of the worst cleansers I have ever used 😕 Texture: the texture is a gloopy, clear gel. It’s comparable to a shampoo or body wash. Scent: this product doesn’t have fragrance, but it smells very plastic-y to me. Application: the travel/sample size comes in a tube with a twist-top. You twist the lid and there is a small hole in the center of the lid that opens to release the product. I was not a fan of the packaging. I had to prop the tube on its side instead of upright when I wasn’t using it because the lid is not 100% airtight—so a little bit of product would leak out of the hole and onto my bathroom counter if I left the tube upright (even if the lid was twisted closed). Results: I used this product 1x/day as a PM face wash and it was so drying. After I washed my face, my skin would feel super tight and dry and like I had to immediately moisturize. After a few weeks, I stopped using this on my face and ended up finishing the bottle as a body wash. Maybe for very oily skin it would be okay, but it was way too stripping for me. Again, will not be repurchasing, especially due to the high price tag for the full size ($32 for 5 oz).

Drunk Elephant Hair & Body Line... On Your Face?
Did y’all know that legitimately every product from the new Drunk Elephant release can be used on the face? That’s how biocompatible and “clean” they are. I will be reviewing the other three products (Shampoo, Conditioner, Deodorant) as facial products as well, since they were also cleared as face-safe 👀 DRUNK ELEPHANT - T.L.C. Happi Scalp Scrub - Babyfacial a bit too much for you? Try Happi Scalp as a once-per-week 10-minute peel, blending physical and chemical exfoliation for baby-soft skin AND a refreshed scalp. The cellulose beads were a gentle and non-irritating scrub that I’m excited to use again! I liked this a lot and feel like the AHA concentration is low enough to allow me to use it once per week versus the two week wait between Babyfacial uses my sensitive skin requires. DRUNK ELEPHANT - Wild Marula Tangle Spray - It makes my hair soft, it makes my face soft, it fits in my purse without threatening to spill, and it’s only $25 USD. I used this as a moisturizing facial spray quite a few times when it was released, but now it’s gotten too hot and humid for liberal oil application on my combo self. But if you have dry skin, this would be an easy way to refresh your skin mid-day. Spritz, pat, enjoy your dewiness. DRUNK ELEPHANT - Kamili Cream Body Cleanser - Beste No 9 a bit too much for your dry skin? Since it’s a cream cleanser, I find Kamili leaves my skin very soft while still cleansing effectively. Since I’m lazy, this has been my go-to shower cleanser for face and body. It did have trouble removing makeup so I’d stick to using it in the AM, after the gym, or when you’re only wearing sunscreen.

This Black-Owned CBD Line Puts Community At The Center of WellnessCBD that is compassionate, effective, and gives back to the community? Yes, please!Feb. 5
My Mental Wellness Improved Through My Self AcceptanceWhen I was around 13 or 14 years old, I remember routinely taking one of my older sister’s black eyeliner pencils before school every morning. I’d arrive early so that I could slip away to the girl’s bathroom to apply a single black line to my eyelids. My parents didn’t allow me to wear any makeup at the time. Although this smudgy line on my eyelids didn’t make me look all that much different, I never felt comfortable at school without it. My teenage mind convinced myself that I needed some sort of cosmetic symbol in order to appropriately express my femininity. Up until that point in my life, society had told girls that looked like me - tall, Black, and with kinky hair - that we somehow weren’t as beautiful as the other girls. For far too long, I believed it too.Feb. 17
