Highlighters vs Lighting Powders
Makeup trends are constantly evolving, we saw “Instagram” brows turn into fluffy soap brows and opaque matte lipsticks transition into soft gradient lip colors. A huge trend that’s almost synonymous with its year in makeup was strobing in 2015, or the use of extreme highlighter. Highlighter was hot, particularly the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfectors which everyone had on their wishlist because of the brand’s collaboration with beauty influencer, Jaclyn Hill that year. However, 2020 has birthed a new decade of makeup trends, mainly focused on natural, minimal, and subtle makeup that accentuates our natural beauty. While highlighters are nice, they are not as subtle and luminous as lighting powders, which I anticipate will make a huge comeback in makeup this year. So what’s the difference between highlighters and lighting powders in the first place? Well I’ve tested out two of them today to demonstrate. BECCA - Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Highlighter Highlighters are usually high in shimmering pigment, meaning they are very intensely bright on the skin. While they pair beautifully with many makeup looks, I don’t prefer to use them because they are so intense compared to my everyday makeup. The shimmering effect is a bit too obvious for me and also often emphasizes the texture on my skin underneath my makeup. HOURGLASS - Ambient Lighting Finishing Powder Lighting powders are essentially finishing powders that contain micro pigments which give off a subtle glowing effect. The reason I adore lighting powders is because they blend smoothly into my skin with other makeup while also softly illuminating the highpoints of my face. Lighting powders definitely align with the new generation natural makeup trends of 2020 and I foresee them becoming a hot trend in the beauty community soon.
