Battle of the Oil Cleansers 🔥🥇🥈🥉
So you know the deal, if you wear sunscreen (which we all do, RIGHT 👀) then you need to be double cleansing at night to get rid of buildup and clean your skin. Since I’ve started double cleansing, my skin has really been more receptive to my nighttime treatments, serums and moisturizers because there isn’t an oily film preventing absorption. Fair warning when I started oil cleansing I went through a 2-3 week purging period where my skin broke out from all the gunk being pulled out. These are my top 3 cleansers for step 1 of double cleansing, let me know what your favs are! VERA BOTANICS - VERA BOTANICS Oil Cleanser and Makeup Remover I love love love this oil cleanser, it is super light weight and emulsifys so nicely! It only has 4 ingredients and takes off a days makeup like a charm. Because it is so light, I find myself using way less than normal oil cleansers because it spreads easily. This product is only 9-12 dollars, depending which vendor you are buying from and when. One bottle will last me about 2 months cleansing 1x a day! BANILA CO - Clean It Zero Cleansing Balm Purifying This is a cult fav, so I had to try it. While I really appreciate the easy emulsification, the initial application feels a bit weird to me and has the consistency of hardened coconut oil that you have to melt. While I really like this one for removing heavy makeup, I don’t run to it when just double cleansing off sunscreen for the day. DHC - Deep Cleansing Oil Ahhh a classic and popular pick, its true DHC is that girl! Easy, classic, olive oil based for all skin types, and no fragrance. I like DHC, it has all the whistle and bells for a great oil cleanser, however I only have this size thanks to Costco and wince at the normal price. I would recommend DHC for more sensitive/dry skin types because this is the creme de la creme of oil cleansers and is one of the OG legit formulations.

Week 1 of Barrier Repair
All through winter (New Zealand) I experienced dry, tight, flaky, red, sensitive, reactive, itchy and eczema prone skin. What a mouthful! Then thank you to an ad on instagram I came across this app, and I learnt sooooo much about my skin. I spent endless hours (when I could with a toddler) going through post after post on this app, taking notes, saving products and doing my own research. I realised I had compromised my skin barrier with endless products and a steroid cream prescribed by my doctor for my eczema (eek I know). I culled my whole routine as nothing I was using was working for me and purchased the basics, mind you I had to wait a while for some products to come from overseas as they are not available here (and some I couldn’t get a hold of at all so had to find similar products). My routine in Week 1: AM CLEANSE: splashed my face with water TREATMENT: The Ordinary - Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 right now I am unsure as to how effective this is, my skin feels supple and soft but for any long term benefits I will have to wait and see. MOISTURISER: The Ordinary - Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA EYE CREAM: CeraVe - Eye Repair Cream with it only being week one, I haven’t seen anything dramatic happen yet SUNSCREEN: PAULA'S CHOICE - Calm Mineral Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 I am still unsure about this as it leaves me with a white case initially but that fades after five or so minutes. PM CLEANSE: CeraVe - Hydrating Face Cleanser For Normal To Dry Skin so far this has been amazing, doesn’t leave my skin feeling tight. Feels really hydrating. I massage it in for about 1min before rinsing. TREATMENT: The Ordinary - Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 EYE CREAM: CeraVe - Eye Repair Cream MOISTURISER: The Ordinary - Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA I was finding that this was just not hydrating enough for my skin and left me tight, and I needed to reapply a few hours later as I headed to bed. But still waking up quite dry in the morning. After a few days I realised I probably wasnt getting my sunscreen off properly and decided to add in a step in the PM. PRE-CLEANSE: BANILA CO - Clean It Zero Cleansing Balm Purifying I had this for removing makeup, a purchase I made on the whim about a year ago as I hated using wipes etc. I only realised after adding this step back in that this was making me reactive and I would wake up itchy with what looked like hives around my eyes/cheek. I culled both products (luckily I only purchased the 30ml of the NMF cream so I had pretty much used it up) and did some more research. See Week 2 of Barrier Repair for more...

which balm is the bomb? part two- purifying🦋
Which balm is the bomb? So the other week I began my series of reviewing the mini clean it zero cleansing balms to find the best one. I took two weeks to test out the purifying cleansing balm, and to my surprise, I really like this one. Its very different from the normal one. I actually think it preforms better. I like the texture more as well. The texture on this one is very smooth and easy to work with, while the other one can be a bit clumpy and hard to scoop. I also feel that this one takes off my makeup a lot quicker and easier. --So while I was typing this out, Banilla Co. came out with a new cleansing balm lol. Its called the CLARIFIYNG cleansing balm, so I guess that one is directed towards acne and the purifying not. This cleansing balm claims to be balancing and soothing. It does feel soothing for a short bit, but I do notice that my skin gets the tight feeling after around 5 minutes of washing. Although I like the consistency and makeup removing powers, I dont really like the effects I see on my face. After some thought, I have noticed my skin feel a bit more dehydrated while Ive been testing out this product. I most likely wont be continuing use of this product because its drying out my skin :/ BANILA CO - Clean It Zero Cleansing Balm Purifying

Sorry Green Clean; not worth the hype for the $
I’m no stranger to oil and balm cleansers, as I’ve been double cleansing for years now. So when I began seeing The Farmacy’s Green Clean hailed as a HG product, I was certainly curious. I’ll shell out money for good skincare, don’t get me wrong. But for 34 USD, this cleansing balm needed to be something extraordinary. I received 4 samples of this cleansing balm, each with enough generously cover your face & neck. So I used it 4 nights in a row. The consistency is nothing special, very much your typical cleansing balm in terms of its sorbet-like texture, and the way it melts into the skin, turning into an oil-like consistency (again, like any other cleansing balm), then emulsifying into a milky oil which rinses clean. It has a light, sort of natural scent that I can’t really pick out, sort of vaguely reminds me of lime. Either way, if scent is a determining factor for you, this one is barely there. For perspective, I have avidly used Banila Co’s Clean it Zero Purifying Cleansing Balm (purple jar), as well as - Hadalabo Gokujun Cleansing Oil 200ml , which I currently use every night and have been for years. I’ve also used heimish - All Clean Balm . What I want to highlight is that this is vegan, cruelty-free, and comes in fully recyclable packaging. It also touts star ingredients such as papaya enzymes, turmeric, sunflower & ginger root oils, as well as Moringa extract. The ingredients are good for your skin, let’s not deny it! But here’s my ultimate opinion: this cleansing balm is just...that. A cleansing balm. I can’t say that I was insanely impressed with it, as it did the job just as well as my Hadalabo oil cleanser, or Banila Co’s, with the exception being that the price is significantly higher. It’s a quality cleansing balm, and I have no qualms with it. But I don’t (personally) for the price, find it worth the hype for those on a budget, especially if you are using it on a daily basis and would need to repurchase frequently. I included pictures of the balm on my skin as I removed my face & eye makeup, and then my bare face following washing it off. It did a well enough job, though there was something odd about the texture while I removed my makeup that I couldn’t quite place. In the end it removed all of my makeup, just as expected. I did feel a bit dry after, but that’s nothing the rest of my routine can’t fix. Personally, I wouldn’t go out of my way to purchase this. For the price, I would rather save my money and spend it on another product. If you like this product, all the power to you! But if you’re cringing at the price, you aren’t missing out by purchasing a more affordable cleansing balm! In my opinion, BANILA CO - Clean It Zero Cleansing Balm Purifying is a dupe for Green Clean; it’s been a well-loved staple for years. Ps. Sorry for my awkward face 😑

Amazingly Effective Makeup Removing Balm
BANILA CO - Clean It Zero Cleansing Balm Purifying I’ve been on the hunt to find the perfect cleansing balm for the first step of my double cleanse process and this one is definitely in the running for 1st place! The texture is more of a firm waxy feeling when it’s first scooped out, but turns into a luscious creamy, smooth balm when warmed up in hands before applying to the face. This removes ALL of my makeup ( two mascaras, Stila eye liner, full eyeshadow, and foundation/concealer/setting powder) in one go and then rinses off easily and completely. My skin is fairly oily and I find that cleansing balms work much better for me than cleansing oils when it comes to not leaving a film on my skin. This balm reminds me of the Clinique take the day of cleansing balm, but this one has a sweet fragrance to it which I enjoy, but others may not. Also, this balm has quite a few added ingredients like centella asiatica extract, licorice root extract, and aloe. Have you tried this one out or any of the other Banila cleansing balms? What are your thoughts?
