Sunburns HURT! How to soothe & avoid a burn
Every year, your Summer trip has the possibility of being ruined by a painful sunburn. We all know that it can happen, but maybe we don't undertsand the why and how to avoid it properly. FYI: Sun damage accounts for 90% of visible changes in the skin! This is cumulative, meaning it all adds up over time (source- Skin Cancer Foundation). This shows just how important proper sun protection really is. Sunburn is caused by unprotected sun exposure that damages the skin causing a painful, red, itchy burn. This can range from minor redness to sun poisoning! UVB rays cause burning, whereas UVA rays penetrate the skin deeper causing premature aging. We need to be sure to choose sun protection that is broad spectrum and fully keeps our skin protected from both of these harmful rays. The sun doesn't just cause damage on a hot Summer day but all year round! You need protection everyday no matter the weather. I recommend a separate face and body SPF because formulations tend to be better when it is designed just for the face. •You must reapply! Be sure you are following the directions on your sunscreen products to ensure the best protection possible. Look for SPF 30 or higher. My Mental Wellness Improved Through My Self AcceptanceWhen I was around 13 or 14 years old, I remember routinely taking one of my older sister’s black eyeliner pencils before school every morning. I’d arrive early so that I could slip away to the girl’s bathroom to apply a single black line to my eyelids. My parents didn’t allow me to wear any makeup at the time. Although this smudgy line on my eyelids didn’t make me look all that much different, I never felt comfortable at school without it. My teenage mind convinced myself that I needed some sort of cosmetic symbol in order to appropriately express my femininity.
