So are pimple patches necessarily effective? ✨
Firstly, I want to give a huge thank you to Hero Cosmetics for sending me their entire acne line as a giveaway prize ✨ I have used their original, invisible, and surface patches in the past and loved them. Pimple patches are stickers made of hydrocolloid (a moisture absorbing dressing). These stickers adhere to the face to dry out the pimples as well as provide protection from picking, external bacteria, and sunlight to speed up the healing the process. They also sometimes include acne fighting ingredients to help with the process. Is it good for all acne? It’s very important to realize what kind of acne is good for patches and what isn’t. Pimple patches (this is coming from research and personal experience) are meant for superficial acne. These are pustules (blemishes containing pus), blackheads, and whiteheads. When it comes to cystic acne or what I call “underground” pimples the patch simply doesn’t penetrate enough to be effective. So they are 100% effective? Not always. The pimple really needs to have some kind of liquid for the patch the soak up (aka it’s main purpose). But that doesn’t mean they aren’t worth it or effective. I personally use pimple patches for protection the majority of the time. Especially with maskne being so prevalent it will create a barrier between your mask and the acne so bacteria isn’t being introduced. How do I use them? First, I cleanse my face. Then I will dry off just the area I’m adhering the patch to. Sometimes I will add salicylic acid to the pimple depending on the situation. Then I apply the patch before I do any other skincare. I do this because I don’t want moisture getting trapped under the patch. Then I go in with the rest of my skincare. I usually leave the patches on for no more than 24 hours. I also have a friend who puts them on before she does her make up for work. We wear a mask all day so you don’t see them until she takes her mask off. It creates a barrier keeping the make up and mask bacteria out. My favorite patches to use are the HERO COSMETICS - Mighty Patch Original for Madewell and HERO COSMETICS - Mighty Patch Invisible+ for Madewell . I’ve also used the Truly Beauty ones in the past and while I like them they don’t blend into the skin like the Mighty Patch does. They also don’t stick as well as the Mighty Patch. The original does a pretty good job at blending into my skin but the invisible is the way to go if you’re going to be out in public with it on. I’ve also used the HERO COSMETICS - Mighty Patch Surface for Madewell in the past and while it has the same power as the original and invisible it was quite painful to take off (while the other ones are not). So long story short yes, I do think pimple patches are effective if you go into it knowing what they can and can’t do. They can be amazing tools to help heal blemishes but they aren’t a miracle worker.

Been comparing these acne patches for the past week and now I’m ready to share my thoughts! Ollie Belle Cover Dot Acne Care - out of the three brands that I tested, this has the strongest adhesive. I also like how the dots are sticked to a perforated packaging which makes it easier to peel. Saw the fastest results with this one, you can really see how much oil and pus it has absorbed! Hero Cosmetics Mighty Patch Original - protects blemishes and makes pimple heal faster overnight. Thickest from the ones I tried, great for in-house use. Would love to see how the Invisible one compares! They also have a Surface variant (a huge rectangle hydrocolloid sticker) that seems great if you’re breaking out in one area. A’Pieu NonCo Tea Tree Spot Patch - formulated with pure essential tea tree oil to help spots and grape seed oil to keep skin moisturized. Thinnest and contains different sizes which makes it perfect for all types of pimple. Might just be my fave out of the three and works better for me than the COSRX ones!

EASY changes to improve acne!!
Treating acne can be quite complex and confusing wondering what products to use for your skin, however there are some simple changes a person can make to help improve their acne. Just these simple adjustments in a routine can make a difference in inflammation and irritation in your acne. The first change to help improve acne is to keep your routine simple. It is super tempting to want to add all the products targeted towards treating acne and try to get rid of it overnight. Sadly many of these products do more harm than good to your skin, can irritate it or cause more acne in the process. What does keeping your routine simple mean? This means cleansing, using a toner, moisturizer, sunscreen and a targeted treatment to help treat any acne on the face. Less is more when it comes to treating acne, because topical ingredients can be irritating to the skin causing dryness or flaking. Pimple patches also known as hydrocolloid bandages have been used for years in the medical field, for injuries and to help aid in wound healing. Acne is a type of wound which is a great reason to use the bandages on them, specifically on white heads, pustules and cysts. Patches come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some patches now include micro points with targeted ingredients for brightening and acne too. One of the more common BHAs to treat acne is Salicylic acid or Willow Bark Extract. There are some other star ingredients that work to treat acne like sulphur, zinc oxide, benzoyl peroxide and azealic acid. Sulphur is not a common ingredient due to the smell, but it treats acne by absorbing excess sebum (oil), exfoliates and antibacterial properties. Zinc oxide is an antioxidant most commonly found in mineral/physical sunscreens but has anti-inflammatory properties, making it perfect to use for inflamed or acneic skin. Benzoyl Peroxide works by killing bacteria, increases cell turnover in the skin, absorbing excess sebum in the skin, and making it perfect for all the types of acne (whiteheads, blackheads, cysts, pustules and papules). While benzoyl peroxide is amazing for treating acne it can be drying and/or irritating on the skin if overused so it is important to remember this. Lastly azelaic acid, an ingredient that isn’t quite as popular but packs a punch, by reducing inflammation in the skin, as well as it exfoliates and helps with uneven skin tone. The highest percentage you can find without a prescription is 10%, which is just as effective in treatment of acne. #CheriePartner

Hydrocolloid patches, which one?
Hydrocolloid acne patches have been a new sensation (from my understanding). I wish I would have knew about them sooner honestly! What does a hydrocolloid patch do? Hydrocolloid patches absorb excess fluids. So, when you have a pimple this means the pus/oil/etc. This means that they can ONLY be used on ready-to-pop whiteheads (pustules/papules). They will not work on cysts (too deep) or blackeads/ closed comedones (little seedy lookin nasties). I was actually gifted the PeaceOut patches from Cherie! (a generous box when they first launched their app 🙏🏻🎉). In addition to the hydrocolloid, they also gave 0.5% salicylic acid! I find that this percentage isn’t really enough to do anything dramatic unfortunately. These work pretty okay (not my fave), but the price for product deters me. It is $19 for 20 patches or $32 for 40 patches. Idk about y’all, but I have extremely acne-prone skin so I run through patches like it’s my job. That price is not gonna cut it with me. ✋🏻 The Mighty Patch by Hero Cosmetics can be found on amazon (yay prime!) and target. AFFORDABLE. $12 for 36 patches, or $22 for 72 patches (i get this one). Also offered in original (these are visible on the skin), the invisible option, the surface option (for a large area), and newly the microdart patches (with salicylic acid). These are the best pimple patches I’ve ever used for the price. I highly recommend them if you are in the market for patches!
