Why You Should BREAK UP with Witch Hazel ASAP!
This is my skin on a good day, and I want to keep it that way! Witch Hazel is hailed as a do it all miracle worker, however, this common ingredient is hurting your skin even if you can’t see the damage. Witch hazel is not a good long term ingredient or a calming product. This is not only due to the astringent alcohol properties, but also due to witch hazel containing tannins. Both of these things affect photosensitivity, contact dermatitis, barrier function and oil production. All of this not only doesn’t help existing acne and hyperpigmentation, but will make them worse. Tannins are naturally sensitizing ingredients for ALL skin types and are also astringents in their own right. They lead to photosensitivity , and contact dermatitis/eczema in bad cases (like mine). Witch Hazel is from 8-12% tannins. Daily and extended use of witch hazel impairs natural oil production leading to excess sebum and issues with moisture barrier function along with wrinkles and accelerated aging & increased possibility of sun damage. All types of witch hazel are distilled using denatured alcohol AKA ethanol. This leads to the extract containing directly about 14% to 15% alcohol. So, regardless of if the formula is alcohol free witch hazel itself like THAYERS - Rose Petal Facial Mist claims, it will NOT be alcohol free simply due to how Witch Hazel is processed for topical application. So, even if the formula says “alcohol free” witch hazel is processed directly with alcohol to get it into the form we use for skin and body “care”. Again this leads it to be about 15% alch. content itself anyway since “all types of witch hazel are distilled using denatured alcohol, with the extract containing about 14% to 15% alcohol.” -CIR The double whammy of alchohol and tannins (plus essential oils in a lot of cases!) leads to excess drying and impaired oil regulation— this means more sebum more often, and eventually more acne. Truly a nightmare for those suffering already with skin conditions. A harmed barrier also accelerates aging, and the sensitizing ingredients helps collagen breakdown even faster. And these are compound when people use this toner along with AHA/BHAs. This is a big no from me, as not only did it make my skin extremely dry but I got patches of contact dermatitis and eczema every time I have personally used it. I choose to use a hydrating toner with humectants instead.

Two Weeks Skin Improvement
I’ve been healing my skin for two weeks with a lot of products that are acne and allergies fighting with retinol in almost everything and my skin is doing really well. I’m also making sure that I’m doing minor things that really helps my skin not to react like, not touching and picking at my skin, washing my hands before washing my face and washing my pillow cases once a week.
