A quick Cheat guide to choosing the right Acid ✨
I find this Flowchart to be a cheat guide to start with your Chemical exfoliation routin. 😊✨ Exfoliation is one of the steps in your skin care routine that can elevate your current routine from good to great. So often I find my skin starting to feel a little bit dull, and I realize that I have been leaving out exfoliation. When I wake up after a night that I have applied a chemical exfoliant, (I really like The Ordinary’s 7% Glycolic Acid, Sunday Riley's Good Genes) The Ordinary - Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution SUNDAY RILEY - Good Genes All in One Lactic Acid Treatment I notice my skin has a much more rested and fresh look. Also, my skin has that 'Glass skin' look and feel. My textural irregularities get even and my skin tone is evened out! Some of the skin concerns that exfoliation is great for targeting include: 🌻Enlarged pores 🌻Uneven skin tone/Hyperpigmentation 🌻Rough skin texture 🌻Fine lines So… back to the big question: ✨What does exfoliate mean? Skin is consistently renewing its cells, by shedding its surface layer. When dead skin cells are flushed away and a fresh layer of cells comes to the surface, the new layer is younger and smoother in appearance. This process is frequent in younger skin, however slows with age. The process of exfoliating is advancing the process of removing dead skin cells and revealing the fresh new layer of healthy skin either physically or chemically. Physical exfoliators are granular, using natural beads or crystals that are rubbed on the skin, sloughing away the dead cells on the top layer of skin. Chemical exfoliants work by targeting the bonds between cells, breaking these bonds, allowing the dead skin cells to break away. Chemical exfoliation is able to penetrate deeper into the skin, targeting congestion that is associated with clogged pores leading to acne. In short exfoliation simply means to shed away dead skin cells with the help of a product. Want to know which exfoliating acids are best for your skin? Affordable way to tame oily skin and acne
Some acne honesty: Just want to say first, that when I was seriously struggling with acne after going off birth control I know this helped, BUT this wasn’t a product that actually cured my acne. I think this mask is great and is an affordable way to treat oily skin and shrivel up blemishes, but for me it provided more short term relief. Just wanted to put that out there and be honest. I would describe this mask as a mini detox for your skin. Anytime I’m feeling like my skin needs a pick-me-up (feeling congested, noticing some blackheads or see a blemish starting to form). And I do see results almost instantly after using the mask. The good: + The salicylic acid does help tame clogged pores, acne and keep excess oils at bay. You will notice a difference almost immediately after and the next morning. + Doesn’t irritate the skin. + Provides some mild exfoliation, which leaves the skin smooth but not irritated. + AFFORDABLE. Gotta love it. + Easily accessible in Canada. We have a couple stores here where we can get the Ordinary products. Or you could just order from Sephora. + While the mask does harden after about 8 minutes, it doesn’t crack or get uncomfortable. + My skin feels clean after but not too tight or “squeaky”. The not so good: - I find the benefits to be fairly short-term (days / a week). - This won’t magically make your pores or acne go away. But it definitely helps! Worth it? Totally! It’s affordable, does its job and gives me an excuse to put on a face mask and watch a million YouTube videos. Would I repurchase? Yes, especially since it’s so affordable. PS The pic was supposed to be a play off of “mask and chill”... I tried 😅🧖🏼♀️

My mask awards!
I’m a huuuge mask fan—at one point I was using some kind of mask almost every single night. While I’ve cut down in an effort to simplify my routine a little, I’ve kept these two because I’ve repurchased them both and continue to use and love them. H IS FOR LOVE - Propolis Claims: purifies and brightens Key ingredients: green clay, kaolin, cami cami, white turmeric, raw cacao, cinnamon, clove, red alaea salt, orange peel, frankincense oil. I went ahead and listed all the ingredients so you can see how luxurious this mask is! Thoughts: if I could only smell one thing for the rest of my life, it would be this mask—no joke. Sometimes I open this mask just to smell it. It’s absolutely intoxicating and the smell makes this more of an experience and not *just* a product. This is an indie brand that’s gained something of a following on instagram, and the founder is dedicated to using only the purest ingredients that are sourced in the most ethical ways, which I respect. The prices are high because of that, but you can feel the quality. I use this mask once or sometimes twice a week, when my skin really needs a detox. It tingles every single time, and I really think it increases blood flow to the face and makes me glowy and bright. It doesn’t dry out my skin like other clay masks, which I really like. I also use it as a gentle scrub when I wash it off, and afterward my skin feels like SATIN. I only use a tiny amount—maybe a teaspoon?—mixed with water, which is more than enough to cover my face and neck. You don’t need a thick layer like with other clay masks. This is $68 for a little over 5oz (it’s 150ml). I’ve had this for six months and I’m a little over halfway through, so I really think one jar of it will last me a year with weekly to biweekly use—that makes me feel a lot better about the price tag. I look forward to doing this mask every single time, and I also love washing it off and using it to scrub my face as a mild exfoliant—two products in one! This wins my best clay mask award because I’ve tried a lot of clay masks and this is by far the most luxurious and effective one I’ve used. The Ordinary - Salicylic Acid 2% Masque Claims: Targets tone and textural issues, including acne Key ingredients: 2% salicylic acid, kaolin, squalane, charcoal Thoughts: This is the mask I reach for when my skin is feeling congested and dull. I like that it doesn’t tighten on my face, and it’s really easy to wash off. The salicylic acid feels like a power wash for my pores, and the charcoal and kaolin absorb oil and make my skin feel fresh. When I wash it off, it feels slightly abrasive (in a nice way), also it feels like I’m getting some bonus exfoliation. It’s never burned my skin, probably because 2% is a fairly low concentration of salicylic acid. This wins my best decongestion award because it does what it claims: targets tone and texture and leaves me feeling smooth.

Before and Afters still in progress....
I truly don’t like doing before and afters especially when it looks like there’s barely any progress but I promise you my skin FEELS so much better than it looks and I’ve seen some amazing progress! I’ve tagged the products I feel have helped the most recently. It takes patience but little progress is still PROGRESS 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

CHERIE MADE ME DO IT 🍒
Everyday, I sit scrolling through Cherie, and I see all of you posting about The Ordinary’s Salicylic Acid 2% Mask and how it compares to their Salicylic Acid Solution. I hadn’t tried either of these products, but after the 1000th post, I decided I had to try out the Salicylic Acid Mask. WHAT IS SALICYLIC ACID? 💧 Salicylic Acid is a Beta Hydroxide Acid (BHAs). It’s used for reducing acne by diving deep into your skin, exfoliating it, and keeping your pores nice and clear. In other words... it’s a game changer for blackheads and whiteheads especially. THE PRODUCT:🧴 The Ordinary - Salicylic Acid 2% Masque The Ordinary’s Salicylic Acid 2% Mask is used to target tone and textural irregularities. The mask is infused with charcoal and clays which really help do the job of deep cleansing. It’s a rinse-off formula and is quite thick and grainy in texture. HOW I USE THE PRODUCT: 👸🏻 I follow the instructions on the back of the bottle quite strictly... I apply the mask once a week to cleansed skin and leave it on for no longer than 10 minutes. I then rinse it off with warm water, and apply a moisturizer. I usually do this in the evenings whilst doing my weekly pamper routine. MY THOUGHTS ON THE PRODUCT: 💭 I can definitely see some minor changes in the texture of my skin however, I don’t think it’s necessarily helped my acne issues or blackheads. I haven’t been using the mask for very long but I’m excited to see whether my skin will change even more as I continue to use this mask. Thank you to all the Cherie users for making me do it! Lots of love! 💛 Paula x

My most re-purchased Ordinary products
Okay so, I have tried 21 products from The Ordinary so far over three-ish years. It might not seem like too many, but man to my skin it feels like a lot of trial and error. But I wanted to go back and narrow down my collection to my most repurchased Ordinary products. These are the ones that work best for my combo / acne prone skin and keep me coming back for more! And of course, as you know, they are all very affordable. The Ordinary - Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution I absolutely love this toner / chemical exfoliator. I use it 1 time a week during my evening routine and wouldn’t use it more than that because it can be a bit sensitizing. But every time I use this toner, the next morning my texture and pores are visibly reduced and my skin looks smooth and glow-y. You get quite a good amount of product and it typically lasts me at least 4 months. The Ordinary - Salicylic Acid 2% Masque I like this mask a lot! It’s great for taking on oil skin or the occasional pimple. The salicylic acid and charcoal make this feel very cleansing and satisfying. I do prefer this to the salicylic acid serum because I have found that to be a bit too drying if I leave it on the skin. I mentioned in another review that this product didn’t help me get rid of all my acne, but it definitely helped. I use this once every 1-2 weeks or whenever my skin needs a little detox. The Ordinary - Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 I love this serum in the winter. I don’t often get dry spots, but if I see that my skin if feeling a little dry in any area, I’ll just pat a bit of this on under my moisturizer and then I’m good to go. Sometimes I use this on my legs if they are especially dry. I also really like how the ordinary has started to sell bigger bottles of some key products. As a consistent user, I like the bigger bottle because it leads to less waste. The Ordinary - ''Buffet'' I’m a big fan of Buffet. I use this probably 2x a week, or sometimes more if I want to give my skin a break from actives and just want to make my skin feel extra plump. The formula is very hydrating and although I have my doubts about products that claim anti-wrinkle benefits, I do think my skin looks smoother after using it. The Ordinary - AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution This is kind of a cheat... because I repurchased this is after my first one fell and smashed on the bathroom floor. 🙃 BUT I am happy I repurchased it because when I do use this my skin looks so so good the next morning. Particularly my skin tone and pores look much better the next day. I use this probably more like 1x every two weeks because I swear no matter how little product I apply it does sting a little. And that’s probably not good... but I’ll justify it with glowy skin. And shout out to my trusty The Ordinary - Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% that is also amazing but missing from the pic! 🥰

My Mental Wellness Improved Through My Self AcceptanceWhen I was around 13 or 14 years old, I remember routinely taking one of my older sister’s black eyeliner pencils before school every morning. I’d arrive early so that I could slip away to the girl’s bathroom to apply a single black line to my eyelids. My parents didn’t allow me to wear any makeup at the time. Although this smudgy line on my eyelids didn’t make me look all that much different, I never felt comfortable at school without it. My teenage mind convinced myself that I needed some sort of cosmetic symbol in order to appropriately express my femininity. Up until that point in my life, society had told girls that looked like me - tall, Black, and with kinky hair - that we somehow weren’t as beautiful as the other girls. For far too long, I believed it too.Feb. 17
