Hyaluronic Acid, the Super Ingredient!
Hyaluronic Acid, or seen as just HA, is probably one of the trendiest super ingredients in my humble opinion! It’s seen on tv commercials, in magazine ads, and all over social media platforms! HA is known for its skin benefits especially “alleviating dry skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and spewing up wound healing,” according to an article on Healthline. The main take away is that HA will promote healthier skin! Just last week I about the new Glow Recipe HA product, so as you can see it is very popular! For reference, I am in my late 20s and want to focus on preventive care before I reach my 30s and 40s. I have oily combo skin with some patches of dry skin due to the changing weather on the east coast. At the moment I only get an occasional breakout and most deal with large pores. The two products I will review are the The Ordinary - Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA ($5.80/ 30 mL/ Sephora) and The Ordinary - Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 ($6.80/30 mL/Sephora). The serum is a hydrating formula with ultra pure HA and meant for dryness (hello winter dry skin 😒). It’s a vegan and cruelty free product! It’s also listed as one of Allure Best of Beauty award winner! The moisturizer is a hydrating formula with amino acids, dermal lipids, and of course HA! It offers immediate hydration and lasting results with continued use. The serum is very watery and is clear as water! I don’t pick up any scent when I apply to my face and the moisturizer is a white creamy texture also with a subtle scent. If the product function doesn’t win you over yet, just think that both of these products will be less than $20.00, so yes I definitely recommend it! I cleanse my face with any face wash I have, apply my serum, and then the moisturizer for extra hydration! The cold season is picking up so I will be going back to this routine very soon! I hope y’all give HA a moment to shine in your skincare collection because it’s such an amazing ingredient! #CheriePartner
The Ordinary-Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5
Who wouldn’t want to try out a moisturizer that rolls in at $7.70? (Or something like that) This moisturizer is a great basic product. No frills or ingredients that are going to blow your mind. However, I personally think that’s a major feature of this moisturizer. I love layering The Ordinary products. They’re so affordable how can you resist buying too many and trying them all out. That being said you’d want a nice gentle moisturizer that didn’t have any extra ingredients in it... right? I really enjoyed using this moisturizer at night and in the morning. I never had any problem with pilling no matter what I used with it. The only time I had an issue was when I used something especially drying I could tell if I didn’t use enough as my skin would feel a bit tight. A great moisturizer, though, in my opinion. My skin liked it. I didn’t have any weird reactions. For the most part it moisturized quite nicely. I’ll definitely repurchase this and I definitely recommend it.

Dry Winter Skin (& tips when using retinol)
It is important to take good care of your skin in the winter. The cold air is harsh on the skin and can cause dehydration, dryness, and irritation. For those who use retinol (such as prescription tretinoin), these issues are always a concern and in the winter it is extra important to be mindful of how your skin is reacting. When you use a strong retinol your skin is automatically considered dry and sensitive due to the nature of the active ingredient. Whether you are using retinol or just struggling with dry winter skin, here are some tips to help you manage: ❄️Use a Gentle Cleanser❄️ Stay away from stripping cleansers as your skin’s moisture barrier is already compromised in the cold weather. Also, when removing makeup/double cleansing, stay away from makeup wipes because they are harsh on the skin and instead use a micellar water or cleansing balm. FIRST AID BEAUTY - Pure Skin Face Cleanser is my recommendation for a gentle cleanser. It works for all skin types. GLOW RECIPE - Papaya Sorbet Smoothing Enzyme Cleansing Balm is a fantastic makeup removing balm that hydrates the skin and is a perfect first step in a double cleansing routine. ❄️Add Hydrating Ingredients❄️ Try using products that contain humectants or other hydrating ingredients such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid. This will help your skin avoid irritation from the cold. You can incorporate this through any step of your routine, but I recommend hydrating serums and masks. GLOW RECIPE - Watermelon Glow Pink Juice Moisturizer can be used as a light moisturizer for those with oily skin, but I recommend using it as a hydrating serum under a thicker moisturizer. When my skin is feeling especially sensitive I mix it with my retinol to dilute the retinol and make it more tolerable for my skin. GLOW RECIPE - Watermelon + AHA Glow Sleeping Mask is a hydrating masking option if that is what you prefer. ❄️Switch to a Different Moisturizer❄️ Make sure you have a thicker moisturizer when the weather changes to help protect your skin. The Ordinary - Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA and ETUDE - Soon Jung, 2x Barrier Intensive Cream are good moisturizer options for the winter. ❄️Consider Occlusives❄️ Some people like to add an occlusive layer over their moisturizer to further protect from the winter air and to lock in the hydrating ingredients underneath. You could use something as simple as Vaseline - 100% Pure Petroleum Jelly, Original or even an oil such as The Ordinary - 100% Plant-Derived Squalane to add an occlusive layer. ❄️Don’t Forget Lip Care❄️ Use a balm such as BURT’S BEES - Nourishing Mango Butter Lip Balm Tube to fight chapped lips! If you have any recommendations for dry winter skin please let me know in the comments!

21 DAYS LATER WITH THE ORDINARY
So my first post was when I used the products for 3 days... Today it’s been 21 days of consistent use of everything you see here! The SHISEIDO - Benefiance Wrinkle Smoothing Cream Enriched i use it during the AM but is a bit to oily for me and doesn’t sink into my skin as I would like so I will discontinue it after I’m done using it (it was pretty pricey so I’m going to finish it LOL) DIFFERIN - DIFFERIN Acne Treatment Gel has worked so far .. I haven’t had any major breakouts .. it’s light and watery once you put it on your face.. you also don’t need a lot .. I need to buy another one because I bought the small size to test it out... there were a lot of reviews indicating that your face would “purge” when you first start using it but that wasn’t the case for me.. The Ordinary - Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% I use it at night since I can’t mix it with vitamin c and it does control your oil and breakouts.. I don’t wake up oily AF anymore lol..it does sting sometimes .. specially after a mask or the peel.. but nothing I can’t handle... The Ordinary - AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution I’m using it 1x a week .. I started with 5 min first and then 8 min and then finally 10 min.... I was scared it would burn my face off... it does tingle and burn but it goes away quickly. I use The Ordinary - Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA at night after applying everything to my face.. super light.. it seals everything in so it’s my last step... my skin really absorbs it.. HADALABO - Rohto Hadalabo Gokujun Hyaluronic Lotion Moist I read about this in the Japanese industry... and it’s one of the leading timers/lotions used.. I use it am/pm after cleansing ... all you need is a pea size for all your face.. you can pay it all over and it quickly disappears... I really like Melano CC Intensive Anti-Spot Treatment Essence Since I already have oily skin I was scared to get a vitamin C that was extremely oily.. this is another product use in the Japanese industry and it’s very soft and light.. my skin absorbs it right away without leaving any heavy traces of oil ... I have definitely seen changes in my skin pigmentation and the amount of breakouts I’ve had .. even when I was on my period... I will continue the routine and keep you all posted!!!

Week 1 of Barrier Repair
All through winter (New Zealand) I experienced dry, tight, flaky, red, sensitive, reactive, itchy and eczema prone skin. What a mouthful! Then thank you to an ad on instagram I came across this app, and I learnt sooooo much about my skin. I spent endless hours (when I could with a toddler) going through post after post on this app, taking notes, saving products and doing my own research. I realised I had compromised my skin barrier with endless products and a steroid cream prescribed by my doctor for my eczema (eek I know). I culled my whole routine as nothing I was using was working for me and purchased the basics, mind you I had to wait a while for some products to come from overseas as they are not available here (and some I couldn’t get a hold of at all so had to find similar products). My routine in Week 1: AM CLEANSE: splashed my face with water TREATMENT: The Ordinary - Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 right now I am unsure as to how effective this is, my skin feels supple and soft but for any long term benefits I will have to wait and see. MOISTURISER: The Ordinary - Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA EYE CREAM: CeraVe - Eye Repair Cream with it only being week one, I haven’t seen anything dramatic happen yet SUNSCREEN: PAULA'S CHOICE - Calm Mineral Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 I am still unsure about this as it leaves me with a white case initially but that fades after five or so minutes. PM CLEANSE: CeraVe - Hydrating Face Cleanser For Normal To Dry Skin so far this has been amazing, doesn’t leave my skin feeling tight. Feels really hydrating. I massage it in for about 1min before rinsing. TREATMENT: The Ordinary - Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 EYE CREAM: CeraVe - Eye Repair Cream MOISTURISER: The Ordinary - Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA I was finding that this was just not hydrating enough for my skin and left me tight, and I needed to reapply a few hours later as I headed to bed. But still waking up quite dry in the morning. After a few days I realised I probably wasnt getting my sunscreen off properly and decided to add in a step in the PM. PRE-CLEANSE: BANILA CO - Clean It Zero Cleansing Balm Purifying I had this for removing makeup, a purchase I made on the whim about a year ago as I hated using wipes etc. I only realised after adding this step back in that this was making me reactive and I would wake up itchy with what looked like hives around my eyes/cheek. I culled both products (luckily I only purchased the 30ml of the NMF cream so I had pretty much used it up) and did some more research. See Week 2 of Barrier Repair for more...

When You Need that Extra Refresh
Today I woke up feeling quite blah and wanted to feel more refreshed. I don’t currently have any apparent issues with my skin but I wanted to make my skin look and feel more awake. Do you ever wake up feeling just dull and wanting to give yourself that boost, even if it’s just something small like taking the time to do your skincare? I randomly picked out the products I thought would be perfect for making my skin feel refreshed and this is what I came up with. Of course you should pick any products you feel will do the trick for you :) 1). I first cleansed my skin (and skipped the toner today) 2). I applied the The Ordinary - Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 I always apply this all over my face, including under my eyes because it’s so hydrating and gentle. 3). Next, because niacinamide is the unicorn of all skincare products and mixes well with everything, I chose to add that next. It’s great if you have any noticeable redness or blemishes. 4). I applied The Ordinary - Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG to depuff my eyes. 5). I then followed with OLAY - Eyes Brightening Eye Cream for that extra hydration (as if I didn’t get enough from the hyaluronic acid haha). 6). Then I applied REN CLEAN SKINCARE - Glow Daily Vitamin C Gel Cream I know some online articles say not to mix vitamin C with niacinamide as they think they counteract each other’s benefits, but there’s no proof that this actually happens. With that being said, I love this vitamin C gel cream because it smells amazing and it makes my skin look nice and bright. 7). And just because I felt like it, I finished with a tiny bit of The Ordinary - Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA Although my skin isn’t dry, I felt the more moisture the more refreshed I’d feel. I love all of these products and highly recommend everyone to try them out, even if it’s just a sample. I have nothing bad to say about any of them. If you’re ever just feeling dull, blah, or needing a pick-me-up, it’s nice to just take the time to treat your skin. Use the products your skin agrees with, of course. I have normal skin and I’m thankful all of these products agree with my skin.
