Skincare advice from my derm
Skincare advice from my derm
If there’s one thing I’ve learned in over ten years of dealing with acne, it’s that sometimes, over the counter products just aren’t enough. Frustratingly, the healthcare system in the US makes dermatologist visits and prescription meds very expensive. That’s why I want to share some of the advice I’ve gotten from my dermatologist. While I do use several prescription medicines to treat my acne, the tips and tricks I’ve gotten from my derm are useful for anyone dealing with the same issues as me (hormonal acne, as well as the texture and hyperpigmentation left behind). For reference, my skin is not sensitive—not sure if I was born that way or if I’ve built up a tolerance to harsh products over the years. I use a telemedicine service called Apostrophe, and before that, I used Curology. You fill out a questionnaire on your medical history and skin concerns, upload pictures of your skin, and a dermatologist reviews the information and creates a treatment plan for you. I have a whole post on why I switched from Curology to Apostrophe, but the short answer is that Apostrophe prescribes more oral medications and I wanted to try that route. I’ve had an excellent experience with both companies in terms of the detailed advice I’ve gotten from my providers. So let’s get into it! Here are some things my dermatologists have told me: Don’t pick at your skin... seriously. One of the best tips I got was to use hydrocolloid patches on acne with a head: not only does it help the bump go down way quicker, it keeps me from picking at it any further. I LOVE the COSRX - Cosrx Acne Pimple Master Patch and I never go without them. Look at your diet. My derm says she gives this advice to ALL her patients: limit sugar, processed carbohydrates, and dairy. She says food is not generally the main cause of acne, but it can certainly aggravate it. She also always recommends increasing consumption of fruits and vegetables. Use sun protection—it helps dark spots fade faster, and of course prevents wrinkles. My derm recommends wearing SPF 30 or higher, as well as a wide-brimmed hat when outdoors. Along with my prescription cream, which includes niacinamide and tretinoin, my derm recommends the following products: LA ROCHE-POSAY - Effaclar Duo Dual Acne Treatment, LA ROCHE-POSAY - Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel, LA ROCHE-POSAY - Toleriane Purifying Foaming Cleanser,CeraVe - Foaming Facial Cleanser For Normal To Oily Skin,Neutrogena - Ultra Gentle Daily Cleanser, LA ROCHE-POSAY - Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer UV SPF 30, CeraVe - Skin Renewing Night Cream These tips and the prescription meds I received from Apostrophe, have made my face clearer than it’s been in YEARS. I’m thrilled with my progress (the before/after photos have about 90 days between them). I’m running out of space, but feel free to ask any questions in the comments! #CheriePartner

Guide to MEN'S Skincare! 🤎
Guide to MEN'S Skincare! 🤎
The days of minimal skincare for men are over! The global market for skincare is expected to reach $189 billion globally by 2025 (statista.com). These companies are no longer missing out on the huge market that is expanded through men of all ages. Sisinternational Research also did studies that show men have a few preferences when it comes to skincare: easy to use products, leave no residue, and no strong scent. So, men's specific skincare products are ultimately completely unnecessary. They do have simple packaging and added cologne fragrances, but the ingredients do not differ in any positive way. Physiological differences between men and women's skin usually shows through larger pores, more oil production, and thicker overall skin. As I said before, it used to be seen as a feminine endeavor to go down the skincare aisle. Through more education and gender neutral marketing, people are picking up cleansers and moisturizers without the stigma. So, put down the 3-in-1 shampoo and face wash combo and try these suggestions out instead. CeraVe - Foaming Facial Cleanser For Normal To Oily Skin Great budget friendly option for most skin types. Using a foaming but non stripping wash can help keep it clean and hydrated. Krave - Kale-Lalu-yAHA Gentle exfoliant that works great to ease your way into a skincare routine. Use 1-2 weekly and increase over time. This can help with pesky ingrown hairs and irriation caused by facial hair. Do not use same day as shaving! dermalogica - Daily Microfoliant Exfoliator Physical exfoliant option if you prefer a scrub feeling that can be used before shaving. Use 2-3 weekly and assess skin's response. Only choose one exfoliant to use at a time. OLE HENRIKSEN - Truth Serum Optional vitamin C is a great way to brighten up and even the skin tone. Use every morning before SPF. Leaves no sticky feeling and sinks in nicely. LA ROCHE-POSAY - Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer UV SPF 30 Sunscreen is an absolute must for everyone! This packaging is clean and neutral, and a squeeze tube makes it easy to store in a shaving kit. Be sure to apply quite a bit and reapply throughout the day. Working at the spa, I got quite a few male clients for facials. Taking care of your skin at home or professionally is necessary no matter what. Do not be afraid to purchase the essentials: cleanser, exfoliant and SPF. After a while of getting your routine down, then you can add in extra products as needed for your specific skin type. It is time to squash societal norms surrounding men's hygiene and skincare! Who's with me?

SUNSCREEN BATTLE | La Roche Posay vs. Volition
SUNSCREEN BATTLE | La Roche Posay vs. Volition
LA ROCHE-POSAY - Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer UV SPF 30 VOLITION - Prismatic Luminizing Shield SPF 50 Who else uses sunscreen everyday!? Even being indoors everyday, it’s important to wear sunscreen (sun comes in through our windows!) These two sunscreens are very different but both could appeal to a specific user. La Roche Posay: This is a holy grail! I love the texture of this and how it sinks into my skin. It feels like a luxury moisturizer and doesn’t leave a greasy finish like a lot of sunscreens. It also leaves no white cast! It’s readily available at most drugstores even though it is a bit pricey for a drugstore product. La Roche Posay has a lot of sunscreens and this one if my favorite so far because of the superior texture. I also use this for my hands sometimes. The only downside is it’s only SPF 30. I rather use an SPF 50 or higher. Volition: The Volition prismatic luminizing shield is a unique sunscreen. It is a thin texture that blends into the skin effortlessly. You have to shake this one because the contents tend to separate! When applied to the skin, it gives a luminous finish. Personally, I think this made me appear a bit oily. Even with a matte foundation on top I’m not sure that this layered well for me. I would definitely recommend this for someone with a dry skin type because it could be so beautiful on them! I love that it’s SPF 50! At $35 this is pricey for the small bottle! It’s only 1oz versus the $19.99 for 2.5oz with the La roche posay sunscreen. I think that the price of the Volition sunscreen really puts the La Roche Posay sunscreen in the lead for me. I will definitely repurchase it! ✨

Huge update
Huge update
So I haven’t been on here in a little while because I’ve been trying to take a break on taking photos of my face and looking at skincare social media because it’s really compromised my mental health and I’m a lot less stressed about it when I’m not constantly focused on it if that makes sense :) Anyways WHOLE NEW ROUTINE last time I checked in I had mentioned I switched to differin, I’m not too sure if that helped me, I did purge a lot. But skin has healed so much faster since stopping differin I finally got to visit the derm and she told me to go back on tretinoin 0.025% to use every night, and she also prescribed me with the clindamycin topical solution 1% to use once every morning. She also advised me to go back on birth control. At first I was not fond of that because birth control AKA I.U.D HELL brought this acne upon me in the first place. But she recommended it to get my hormones back in check, but she also stated she wasn’t comfortable prescribing me spirlactone (which is what I was aiming for) without using BC even though I stated to her I am not sexually active currently and I don’t plan to be for a very long time. Anyways, I made an appointment with my obgyn and got on birth control pills, if you are curious to which one it’s called “Drospirenone” I haven’t started them yet because she told me to wait until the first Sunday during my period. But I have been consistently using the tret and the clindamycin every day for only a week and a half so far and I’ve already seen a lot of improvement. I don’t want to get too excited because I this is what happened the first time with tret, it was great the first week or two and then my skin started to purge. I’ve now been through the purging process 3 times. And it’s gonna be torture to go through it again but if it happens then it happens 🙏 Super nervous to start the birth control for the same reason but I can only be positive and hope for the best! My full routine currently is AM VANICREAM - Gentle Facial Cleanser clindamycin topical solution 1% (derm prescribed) LA ROCHE-POSAY - Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer UV SPF 30 *im switching to a higher spf PM VANICREAM - Gentle Facial Cleanser Neutrogena - Hydro Boost Gel-Cream (the extra dry unscented version) OBAGI - Tretinoin 0.025% Cream(derm prescribed) And sometimes I like to put another thin layer of moisturizer on top once the tret is absorbed to prevent irritation and dryness

Oily / Acne-Prone Skin Deep Cleanse Routine
Oily / Acne-Prone Skin Deep Cleanse Routine
Every once in a while, it is important to do a deep cleanse for your skin to prevent sebum and dead skin build up that will lead to break outs and enlarged pores. It is like doing house cleaning, which is necessary for everyone regardless of your skin type. However, since my face produces a lot of oil, I tend to break out more, and I have developed a deep cleanse routine that really helped with alleviating my acne problems.   Step 1 – Cleanse Product: Neutrogena (Deep Clean Facial Cleanser Normal to Oily Skin)    Firstly, I need to get rid of all the dirt and impurities on the surface of my face to get into cleaning the deeper layers of my skin. I use this cleanser because it has a strong cleaning power that removes the oiliness of my face without stripping off the hydration. It is in a gel texture that lathers into foam.      Step 2 – Exfoliate Product: Dermalogica (Daily Microfoliant)   This step is to get rid of all the dead skin cells being built up on the face that are the main causes of rough skin, dullness and acnes. The product has become one of my favourite products because my skin feels much brighter and smoother every time after I have used it. It is in a white powder form and turns into foam when it touches water. Because it is meant to be a daily exfoliate, it is very gentle on the face, however, I would not recommend exfoliating every day because it will destroy your skin’s barrier, and I have noticed that my skin becomes more fragile and red if I use it too often.   Step 3 – Detox Product: Estée Lauder (NightWear Plus 3 Minute Detox Mask)   I always like to follow up with a clay mask that draws out impurities from deep under the skin and helps control the oiliness of my face. This visibly reduces black heads of my skin if I keep up with this routine regularly. This product smells like fresh cucumber, which I enjoy, and has a very cooling sensation on the face. What I like the most about this product compared to other clay masks is that it dries very quickly because it is so thin. It leaves me with a clearer and smoother skin just after 3 minutes, which is great for lazy people like me.   Step 4 – Sooth & Hydrate Product: Avene (Eau Thermale Spring Water)   I use this mist to add another layer of moisture before I lock everything in with a moisturiser and to sooth my skin after exfoliation. The mist spreads very evenly, covering every part of my face, and feels very refreshing and cooling.     Step 5 – Moisturiser Product: La Roche Posay (Toleriane Sensitive Crème)   Lastly, I will rehydrate myself with a thicker cream than I normally use that has soothing properties to comfort my skin after going through the hash cleansing steps before. My skin feels very hydrated, smooth and plump after I use this cream. Also, it is not too heavy on the skin, and has no scent.

the best moisturizers for this dry winter season
the best moisturizers for this dry winter season
The winter time has arrived and Christmas is just around the corner. The air is colder and drier… and no help to our skin. Here are a few of the best moisturizers- for night and day- to ensure all-day hydration… all found over-the-counter or at a drugstore! Before we begin our list, here are some benefits as to WHY you should moisturize morning and night, no matter your skin type. Firstly, your skin will become less oily. Dehydrated skin leads to overproduction of oil. If your skin is hydrated, it won’t feel the need to produce more ‘moisture’. Another benefit is plumper and brighter skin, which, of course, contributes to the overall youthful, glowy skin that everyone desires. Dry skin can also lead to itchiness, so moisture is key to prevent irritation. Hydration is also key for a smoother makeup application. The key ingredient in all moisturizers is hyaluronic acid- if you don’t see it listed, don’t bother buying it. Personally I also prefer fragrance-free. Make sure to always use a moisturizer with SPF in the morning, or at least use sunscreen over your moisturizer. CeraVe - PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion This is my all time favorite night cream. I have been using it for years and swear by it. You really can’t go wrong with CeraVe and this cream is everything it claims to be- ultra-lightweight, insanely hydrating, and oil-free. Perfect for acne-prone individuals like myself. Neutrogena - Neutrogena Hydroboost Water Gel MoisturizerI feel like this gel-cream product has gotten a lot of hype recently, and rightfully so! Glycerin and HA are the perfect combo and your skin will drink it up. It’s also non-comedogenic and alcohol-free. VANICREAM - Moisturizing Skin CreamThis cream is recommended for extremely dry and sensitive skin. You’ll also find ceramides in this product, which are found in the phospholipid bilayer cell membrane. Meaning, if you find ceramides listed amongst the ingredients, it will help reinforce the skin’s barrier (ahem, cell membranes). LA ROCHE-POSAY - Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer UV SPF 30For acne-prone skin, generally oil-free is the way to go. Also known as non-comedogenic, oil-free moisturizers won’t clog your pores. La Roche-Posay has many great products for acne-prone skin, and I use quite a few myself. Aveeno - Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer SPF 30 I wanted to throw in a moisturizer with SPF (one I’m currently using, actually). This moisturizer is oil-free, made with soy extract, and paraben-free. It has SPF 30 and has little tiny sparkles that make your skin glow after application. It also works great under makeup. I hope this list helps, as these are some of my favorites. My top brands for moisturizers are CeraVe, La Roche-Posay, and Cetaphil. Serums are also a great option (REVOLUTION - 2% Hyaluronic Acid Serum). Don’t forget to moisturize those lips too (I use Vaseline - 100% Pure Petroleum Jelly, Original every night)! And finally, remember to stay healthy and hydrated during this holiday season. --------------------------------------------- Thank you for giving my post a read! Iam excited to share my thoughts on topics I am passionate about. :) LG, Louisa
