INGREDIENT SPOTLIGHT: Alpha Lipoic Acid
The Ordinary - Alpha Lipoic Acid 5% When The Ordinary website warned me about Alpha Lipoic Acid being too strong for a beginner, I did not listen. This was from my very first TO order and very first endeavor into acidic exfoliants. Also known as Thioctic Acid, ALA is an antioxidant with research showing its ability to penetrate skin rapidly. ALA at 5% as it is delivered in TO’s product, has shown to decrease skin toughness and signs of photo aging significantly after 12 weeks of use. A notable side effect is burning and warming sensations that are supposed to decrease after 4 weeks of use. This is exactly what happened to me- I have never seen my face bloat up and turn red as quickly as my experience with this product upon initial use. This is contact reaction and while my subsequent uses showed less redness, I was also extremely ginger with the amount I used (maybe 2-3 drops at most in the PM without ANY other acids or products for that matter). Because I was so cautious about getting a contact dermatitis again, I never got to use it for the full 12 weeks and benefit from its effects. This product is not for the sensitive skin soul! But if you do try, I’d say do so in minimal amounts and with caution. Definitely wear SPF the next morning!!

Ordinary Products U Can & Can’t Use Together
I’ve seen a lot of confusion and questions about which The Ordinary products you can and cannot use together. Sometimes it’s trial and error. Sometimes, we only use one product. I was looking around Pinterest for more information on The Ordinary products (which I use and LOVE) and came across this awesome, handy chart! Share it, save it, screenshot it, learn it, memorize it, print it (like I did because I’m super forgetful). Enjoy! My Mental Wellness Improved Through My Self AcceptanceWhen I was around 13 or 14 years old, I remember routinely taking one of my older sister’s black eyeliner pencils before school every morning. I’d arrive early so that I could slip away to the girl’s bathroom to apply a single black line to my eyelids. My parents didn’t allow me to wear any makeup at the time. Although this smudgy line on my eyelids didn’t make me look all that much different, I never felt comfortable at school without it. My teenage mind convinced myself that I needed some sort of cosmetic symbol in order to appropriately express my femininity. Up until that point in my life, society had told girls that looked like me - tall, Black, and with kinky hair - that we somehow weren’t as beautiful as the other girls. For far too long, I believed it too.Feb. 17
