Do’s & Don’t’s of A Sensitive Skin Routine
Do’s & Don’t’s of A Sensitive Skin Routine
In my opinion, all skin is sensitive- but people with particularly reactive skin have to take extra caution, especially when you have a condition like eczema (hey fam!) and rosacea. Personally, I have combination sensitive skin and eczema, but nowadays my skin is pretty normal. Here’s some tips to follow when building your basic skincare routine... • Don’t: Jump into a ten-step routine. Overwhelming skin with so many products can easily aggravate sensitive skin, while also making it harder to figure out what one is irritating your skin. Take your time. • Do: Iron out the basics! Before introducing serums, make sure to find a cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen combination that gently nourishes skin. Avoid exfoliants in these so that they’re a safe fall-back if your skin starts flaring up. My favourite sensitive skin cleansers are HOLI FROG - Tashmoo Water Lily Nourishing Milky Wash and PAULA'S CHOICE - RESIST Perfectly Balanced Foaming Cleanser , as they cleanse without stripping skin of protective oils. My go-to sensitive skin (and all skin) sunscreens are PAULA'S CHOICE - Essential Glow Moisturizer SPF 30 (mineral) and PAULA'S CHOICE - YOUTH-EXTENDING DAILY HYDRATING FLUID SPF 50 (chemical). • Don’t: Use products with fragrance, alcohol, or essential oils. Alcohol is drying and can weaken the skin barrier, your skin’s defense against environmental damage. Fragrance and essential oils not only have a high chance of irritating skin, but also oxidize upon contact with the air, releasing free radicals that break down collagen. Avoid these. • Do: Incorporate antioxidants. Antioxidants battle environmental aggressors, neutralize free radicals, soothe skin, and calm redness. These and a good sunscreen are going to be your best combination for calm, youthful skin! I utilize a couple drops of The Ordinary - Resveratrol 3% + Ferulic Acid 3% on mornings I forgo vitamin c, but I also enjoy the silky texture of PAULA'S CHOICE - Retinol Super Antioxidant Serum for a gentle, moisturizing retinol that is also loaded with antioxidants. • Don’t: Try to smother skin into submission. Piling on layers of the heaviest cream may provide temporary relief, but it can lead to congestion and acne, which will only inflame skin more in the long-term. • Do: Combine fatty acids, ceramides, peptides, and/or hyaluronic acid treatments to repair the skin barrier, promoting moisture retainment in multiple levels. Layering different types of hydration/moisture from thinnest to thickest is better for your skin and will promote healing the root cause versus treating the symptoms. I love combining PAULA'S CHOICE - Resist Anti-Ageing Omega+ Complex Serum and NIOD - Multi-Molecular Hyaluronic Complex underneath my moisturizer to hydrate + nourish my skin and reduce frequency of my eczema flare-ups.

Skincare Line-up: Combo Skin Nighttime🌜(simple)
When my skin is already looking and feeling pretty good, I like to simplify my routine a little just to not over compromise my skin barrier. This routine really helps me nourish, treat and target any skin issues without layering too many products. Background info: My skin is combination and acne-prone. It’s also pretty tough so I don’t get irritation from “harsher” actives and ingredients! SKINCEUTICALS - Hydrating B5 Gel My go-to Hyaluronic Acid serum! It’s my favorite hydrating product because the Hyaluronic Acid seriously plumps up the skin and brings hydration to the surface of the skin. I apply a few drops of this on my palms and press into the skin. SKINCEUTICALS - Retinol 0.5 Retinol Night Cream Retinol! This night cream contains 0.5% pure retinol which helps to promote cell turnover, improves the appearance of lines, wrinkles, discoloration and pores, and reduces breakouts! This particular cream is formulated with a Soothing Complex that calms the skin with Bisabolol and Boswellia Serrata Extract which soothes and comforts the skin. I apply two pea-size amounts on my finger tips, rub them together and press into my skin (focusing on problem areas). THE inkey LIST - Brighten-i Eye Cream Eye cream is one of those things that I have a love/hate relationship with. It’s undecided if I really see a difference as technically my serums and moisturizers should do the same thing- but I recently started using this one from the Inkey List that has brightening properties. I haven’t seen much brightening yet but it has a very lightweight, hydrating formula that I like. YOUTH TO THE PEOPLE - Adaptogen Deep Moisture Cream with Ashwagandha + Reishi To lock in all the active ingredients in my toners and serums, I love this cream from Youth To The People because it feels thick and nourishing. The key ingredients in this cream include Squalane, Ashwagandha, and Fermented Reishi which together helps boost skin hydration, minimizes risk of clogged pores, reduces visible signs of fatigue and detoxifies and combats signs of aging. THE inkey LIST - Rosehip Oil Rosehip Oil is one of the most nourishing antioxidant oils. This 100% pure rosehip oil helps to promote softer, smoother skin and the fatty acids help to nourish. I use this as my last step to seal in all my products because it’s so emollient. It always leaves my skin GLOWING✨

Skincare Line-up: Combo Skin Daytime ✨ (simple!)
When it comes to skincare, I probably have the most high-maintenance routines. But on some days, I do like to pare down my routine to just the “essentials”- especially when my skin is looking and feeling pretty good. I feel like this routine just covers all my bases by adding hydration, protection from free radicals with antioxidants, moisturizes, brightens and protects sun damage! 🤩 Background info on my skin: I have combination skin and am definitely acne-prone! My skin is pretty tough so it doesn’t get irritated easily by “harsher” ingredients and actives. SKINCEUTICALS - C E Ferulic With 15% L-Ascorbic Acid Vitamin C Serum My favorite Vitamin C/antioxidant serum! It brightens the skin, and boosts the performance of my sunscreen so I make sure to incorporate it into my routine every morning! This formula also includes L-ascorbic acid which is a rich antioxidant ingredient that neutralizes free radicals and protects against oxidative stressors, and Ferulic Acid which has similar benefits, enhances antioxidants and stabilizes the Vitamins C & E. SKINCEUTICALS - Physical Fusion Uv Defense SPF 50 One of the greatest sunscreens I’ve ever used. This is super lightweight and feels like nothing when you have it on the skin- it’s the only sunscreen I can get my boyfriend to wear! It has 100% mineral filters that provides UVA/UVB protection and adds a natural glow to the skin.

Brand Review: Youth to the People
Brand Review: Youth to the People
Hey dudes! Today I’m doing something a little different, by reviewing a BRAND instead of a bunch of products. I wanted to talk about a few key points that this brand values, as well as why I support them and keep buying their products. Keep reading to find out more! PS — this is not sponsored or paid, and none of my YTTP products were gifted by the brand. We’ve never worked together, but I do really enjoy them. You can find most of this info on their website, but I wanted to pull out a few talking points that I find important. When Greg & Joe founded YTTP, they had help from their grandmother Eva & their Aunt Lisa, as well as Greg’s mom, Lisa. Women have always been important to their growth! Youth to the People has always been about the community, supporting non-profits and activists. They work towards inclusion and social change, and often challenge the “status quo.” They work to reduce their carbon footprint and also support young artists in communities! Ethos: — skincare for all, meaning all genders, all skin types, and all people! — consciously sourced ingredients, all made in California and paired with vegan actives — conscious consumption: leaving the world better than you found it — vegan and cruelty free: animals are not ingredients! Sustainability: — glass packaging means it won’t leech chemicals into the product like plastic can, and it can be recycled and reused way more times than plastic! — sustainable formulas that are safe for the environment, even after they are washed down the drain. They always feature diverse groups of people, including ethnicity and age variants, on their website and social media. During the current Covid-19 crisis, they are making appropriate comments online and supporting healthcare and frontline workers. Their products are consistently fantastic. I have used the cleanser, toner, both moisturizers, the oil, and the dream mask. All of them hold up as some of the greatest products I’ve tried, and I am always excited for new launches. The adaptogen cream is rich and soothing, and hydrating like their adaptogen mist. The mist is the perfect pick me up for any time of day! And the dream mask is, well, dreamy. It plumps my skin overnight and doesn’t leave me greasy. The kombucha toner is my holy grail exfoliant as of now, and I don’t see that changing soon. The cleanser is a staple I haven’t had in my routines in a while (I do own a back up) as well as the kale moisturizer. Sometimes I just like trying out new brands! If you haven’t tried anything from YTTP, I suggest you pick up some minis or a kit from their website. They’re truly a remarkable brand, and supporting them = supporting tons of organizations that help marginalized communities and people in need. 5/5 would recommend this brand to everyone!

SKINCARE LINE-UP: RETINOL NIGHT
SKINCARE LINE-UP: RETINOL NIGHT
It’s retinol night! So these products I have grouped together to give me the best results with retinol and prevent any irritation! Background info: I have combination skin that is sometimes dehydrated. My skin is also very tolerant of active ingredients. SKINCEUTICALS - C E Ferulic With 15% L-Ascorbic Acid Vitamin C Serum My favorite Vitamin C/antioxidant serum! This particular cream is formulated with a Soothing Complex that calms the skin with Bisabolol and Boswellia Serrata Extract which soothes and comforts the skin. I apply two pea-size amounts on my finger tips, rub them together and press into my skin (focusing on problem areas). VINTNER'S DAUGHTER - Active Botanical Serum This is a powerhouse serum full of botanical oils and extracts that really help the skin. There’s a full list of ingredients on their website but this serum basically heals, balances, fights free-radicals with antioxidants, strengthens with ceramides, nourishes with fatty acids and brightens with vitamins to renew, repair, protect and tone skin. Like what else could I ask for?! I use their push/press method to apply! PAULA'S CHOICE - 10% Azelaic Acid Booster When my skin needs an additional boost I like to mix a tiny bit of this booster into my moisturizer (the next step). Azelaic Acid is amazing for gently exfoliating the skin, unclogging pores and refining skin’s surface.

SKINCARE LINE-UP: BAD SKIN DAYS
SKINCARE LINE-UP: BAD SKIN DAYS
This is my go-to skin routine on mornings when I wake up to “blah” skin; maybe I have a few breakouts, skin’s looking a bit dull, or I just need a “feel-good” routine to make me feel better about my skin. Background info: I have combination skin that is sometimes dehydrated. My skin is also very tolerant of active ingredients. THE inkey LIST - Beta Hydroxy Acid This BHA from TheInkeyList has 2% Salicylic Acid which really helps to exfoliate the skin and unclog pores (which then reduces blemishes!) It also has Zinc (to control oil production) and Hyaluronic Acid (to hydrate and plump skin)! I apply it by putting two drops on my palms and pressing it into the skin. ALPHA-H - Vitamin B Serum This is a cocktail of amazing ingredients like Niacinamide to improve skin texture, Copper peptides to rejuvenate skin cells and boost collagen and elastin production, and Chia Seeds which are rich in Omega-3, fatty acids and antioxidants to plump and hydrate skin. I also apply a few drops to my palm and press into my skin. The key ingredients in this cream include Squalane, Ashwagandha, and Fermented Reishi which together helps boost skin hydration, minimizes risk of clogged pores, reduces visible signs of fatigue and detoxifies and combats signs of aging. ILIA - Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40 This is my secret weapon when it comes to bad skin days. This lightweight serum can be applied on its own or as the last step in your skincare routine! It’s lightweight, tinted and evens out skintone. This also contains Squalane, Zinc Oxide (a physical sunscreen), Hyaluronic Acid and Niacinamide (all the ingredients I love!). It offers great sunscreen coverage, just make sure to apply enough or as I sometimes like to add this on top of my regular sunscreen for extra protection and a skin tint! I work really quickly with this product to prevent pilling so I use half a dropper of this product, rub quickly between my palms and apply to the face. This routine gives me a GLOW for when days I’m not looking my best!
