The Do’s and Don’ts for Oily, Acne Prone Skin
The Do’s and Don’ts for Oily, Acne Prone Skin
Knowing your skin type and skin condition is the first step to treating it. I personally have dehydrated yet oily acne prone skin. The right type of products in a routine can make a huge difference. *Disclaimer: I love all the products above except the Clinique toner (Dont use this please). I will explain below why things are good or bad for acne. Step 1: Cleanse Do - Use gel cleanser like the FARMACY - Clean Bee Ultra Gentle Facial Cleanser . The gel formula will deep cleanse the face without stripping. Don’t - Use a cream cleanser like the GEORGETTE KLINGER - Green Tea Cream Cleanser . This is more geared towards dry skin. It will cleanse and hydrate but won’t give you the deep cleanse oily/acne prone skin needs. Step 2: Treat Do - Use a product with salicylic acid like PAULA'S CHOICE - Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliator . Salicylic acid is oil soluble and will dive deep into your pores breaking up any sebum or debris. Don’t - Use something with detnatured alcohol like the CLINIQUE - Clarifying Lotion 3 . It may feel good at first but the alcohol is stripping your skin and does more harm than good. In the end your face will over compensate for the stripping effect and produce more oil. Step 3: Moisturize Do - Use a gel moisturizer like the FIRST AID BEAUTY - Ultra Repair BarriAIR Cream Safe for Sensitive Skin . I love this because it is free of a lot of skin irritants like fragrance and dyes. The gel formula won’t feel too heavy on the skin but will give you all the hydration benefits you need. Don’t- Use a heavy, cream moisturizer like the Milk MAKEUP - Vegan Milk Moisturizer . Heavy creams are more geared for dry skin. For oily skin it will just sit on top potentially clogging pores (plus I do believe this has some comedogenic ingredients). These are basic steps I’ve been using for a while to make my skin routine the best is can be for my skin concern. If you have any questions about any steps or products let me know below. 🖤 /*some products gifted

First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair BarriAir Cream ($30/1.5oz) What it is: A light-as-air cream-to-foam moisturizer that helps repair the skin barrier and provide adaptable hydration. For: Normal, Combination and Oily Skins. Skincare Concerns: Dryness, Dullness and Uneven Texture, and Fine Lines and Wrinkles Texture: Lightweight Cream. My Experience: I tested this product for about 2 months and I prefered to use it during warmer weather. It is the dreamiest moisturizer I have ever tried! It has the most unique and coolest texture! It is light as air (hence the name) and it is really foamy. It actually grows when it reacts to air, which it is super cool, giving it the “cloud-like“ texture, but the formula does not change only the texture. It is extremely lightweight but immensely hydrating at the same time, making it perfect for my oily, prone to dehydration skin. And it retails for only $30. It contains lipids that are very similar to the composition of our skin barrier, therefore BarriAir Cream helps to fortify our skin and maintain its healthy state. The formula is genius! It contains ceramides, linoleic acid, hyaluronic acid (in 3 different molecular weights, therefore it is able to reach multiple levels of the skin), and colloidal oatmeal, which all fully hydrate and replenish the skin. It is noncomedogenic, fragrance free, hypoallergenic, and safe for sensitive skins. Basically, everything I love and want in a product! The only downsize is the packaging since the jar packaging exposes the ingredients to air and light, causing them to loose their effectiveness. If they would change the packaging I would repurchase it in a heart beat and recommend it 100% because of its performance and amazing price. 👩‍🔬My Tretinoin Journey ~ 8 Weeks in
👩‍🔬My Tretinoin Journey ~ 8 Weeks in
Hi all! I started tretinoin / retin-a about 8 weeks ago for the first time. I got my prescription from Curology specifically seeking tretinoin, which I told my doctor so he would be sure to prescribe it to me! Always tell them if you’re looking for a specific ingredient! 👩‍🔬What is tretinoin/Retin-A? Tretinoin is a Retinoid; retinoids are derivatives of Vitamin A (retinol, retinaldehyde, retinal, isotretinoin, adapalene are others.) Tretinoin’s intended and approved use is for acne, as it was created for acne treatment, but it is very often prescribed for anti aging and skin texture because through the decades of research, doctors found it was great for reducing wrinkles and large pores and repairing sun damage. Tretinoin increases cell turnover and exfoliates the top layers of our skin Decreases the shedding of dead skin cells into our pores + decreases inflammation It works much more deeply and much more effectively than its non-prescription counterparts, such as regular retinol Although strengths cannot be compared across the board, it has been observed that retinol is roughly 20 times less potent than tretinoin Decades of research confirm tretinoin as the holy grail, “gold-standard” in topical treatments for fighting acne + clogged pores, as well as smoothing out fine lines + wrinkles, reducing pigmentation from damage, and evening the skin texture 🙋‍♀️Who should use tretinoin? Tretinoin is suitable for most people; the only people who should be wary of it are those who have extremely sensitive skin, rosacea ❌Do not use tretinoin or any retinoids when pregnant or breastfeeding!❌ Dermatologists say that tretinoin is a great option for comedonal acne since it exfoliates + prevents plugging of the pores 💊Using/starting Tretinoin - tips from me + my dermatologist I’d recommend starting with tretinoin in a lotion/cream formula as it tends to be less harsh than the gel due to having soothing ingredients included in the formula. Curology has a cream formula that I absolutely love LOW + SLOW : start with a low dose (ask your doctor and give them your history) + go slowly with use. My derm recommended starting M W F of each week but do it less if you are experiencing too much irritation always follow instructions + advice from your dermatologist. With curology, I am able to send my provider messages and pictures with concerns and requests Simplify your routine! I did cut back to hydrating cleanser(s), hydrating toner or essence, thick moisturizer, my curology formula, + an oil on top to lock it all in. As your skin accustoms you will be able to slowly work those treatment products back in SPF ALWAYS🌞 I started tretinoin at 0.005% and upped to 0.01% after one month and I am seeing smoother skin and smaller pores, with very little purging. Pictures are from ordered from oldest to new except the first which compares starting with 8 weeks. FIRST AID BEAUTY - Ultra Repair BarriAIR Cream Safe for Sensitive Skin This is my first time trying the First Aid Beauty brand after hearing many good things and while I'm not going to bash the brand, let me start by saying that I HATE this product. I was very intrigued to try it because the texture seemed unique and innovative, so I assumed a superior formula would follow. I was wrong. Let's start with the good, since there's not much here. Pros Fragrance free Sensitive skin friendly (apparently) contains oxygen (if that means anything to you) also contains some fatty acids, ceramides, licorice root and fever few extracts Cons It burns! How is it that a cream said to repair a damaged skin barrier feel so bloody irritating? It's literally called a "barrier" cream. The nerve! It dried out my skin. Winter is upon us and this cream robbed the little moisture I had left on my face. I am now a prune. Pilling on this is crazy. Do not use this if you plan on doing a full face of makeup. The smell is awful! I don't like fragrance in my products but they normally just don't smell like anything. This smells like melted plastic. I would not recommend this for any skin type and will not be repurchasing this product. I am hoping the rest of the line has better products for sensitive skin.

All I can say is wow, my skin
All I can say is wow, my skin is far from perfect but seeing the progress my skin has made in the past few weeks is really encouraging to keep going. I had never been one to be good with routine especially when it came to skincare, I didn’t know much about skincare and truly how important it is to take care of your skin. Most of the time I would just pick up any random cleanser on the shelf, usually a terrible one 🤦🏻‍♀️ and not even consistently use it. It’s taken me a few years of trying and failing at creating a routine and truly sticking to it. As someone that struggles with mental illness getting up in morning or getting ready for bed and washing my face, putting moisturizer on, and sunscreen after a shower can seem daunting some days and I’m honestly so proud of myself for not skipping out because I didn’t feel like it, if anyone else can relate to this just know trust me you are not alone 💚 Taking care of my skin has made me appreciate and love my body more which is something I never thought I would do. I have so many moments it gets to me, and the negative thoughts about myself come crashing in but I’ve had to look myself in the mirror and tell myself I’m beautiful even with the acne because acne doesn’t define me! Much love everyone and happy kindness day ❤️ Thank you for your support and following me on my journey! So far I’ve still been using tret every 2-3 days! I recently switched my moisturizer to FIRST AID BEAUTY - Ultra Repair BarriAIR Cream Safe for Sensitive Skin I freaking love it. Its fluffy and light and feels good when I put it on, I use it am and pm, and on nights I use tretinoin I will sandwhich it so I moisturize first, then layer tretinoin on top and then I add one more layer of moisturizer just for some extra hydration. So far I haven’t noticed any irritation, my skin doesn’t look as oily too! As you can see I’ve broken out a bit around my mouth per usual due to my period, I reallllly wanna try the FLO pms gummie. It’s 25 dollars a month I believe, let me know if you’ve tried it and if it made a difference in your hormonal acne!!

Maskne Management
Maskne Management
Maskne. A new type of acne... who knew? Well, from all the friction from the mask when you talk or removing it, will all the bacteria coming out when you breathe, and just accumulating in the mask, its no wonder we’re all breaking out. The acne are coming out looking large and cystic, and most of the time no head- just a huge painful bump. So the best way to manage these breakouts is by applying a minimal skincare routine- just the essentials, including a double cleanse with a cream cleanser as a second cleanse, some pimple patches for the more manageable pimples, and a good hydrating, repairing moisturizer. A good double cleanse uses a balm/oil as a first cleanse, and another cleanser for the second cleanse. The second cleanse can be any type of cleanser, but for the sake of maskne, a cream cleanser will leave your skin feeling soft and moisturized and protected from environmental physical harshes ie. Mask friction. HERO COSMETICS - Mighty Patch Original and Invisible+ Bundle are the best pimple patches out there- they absorb all the gunk out of the pimple- assuming there is a head. If not, the patches wont do much, and you better off waiting for them to disappear and using masks to help clarify them. A hydrating serum is key underneath your moisturizer. Serums will work to hydrate your skin and help with the skin repair process. If your skin is dehydrated, it will take longer for irritation and acne to heal. VICHY - Minéral 89 Face Serum is my absolute favorite hydrating serum. Lastly, a good repairing moisturizer should keep your skin soft and protected, and the thicker ones will help create a barrier between your skin and the mask. A thicker moisturizer will also keep your skin from being dry and irritated under the mask. The one shown here PHASE ZERO - Academy Night Cream is thick and moisturizing but I think FIRST AID BEAUTY - Ultra Repair BarriAIR Cream Safe for Sensitive Skin is the best moisturizer for this, as it helps repair the skin so well. I also think a great akin repair mask, great for sensitivity and irritation- which may be something we’re also experiencing with maskne is the FIRST AID BEAUTY - Ultra Repair Oatmeal Mask . #cheriepartner VO BEAUTY - Milky Melt-away Cleansing Balm stratia - Velvet Cleansing Milk PHASE ZERO - Academy Night Cream
