My Acne Fighting Skincare Routine
I’ve struggled with cystic breakouts for almost three years now (they started popping up when I was 22) and I’ve finally found a routine that works for me and my skin—unfortunately for my bank account, most of the products that actually work are on the pricey side. For me, I’ve noticed that chemical exfoliants perform the best for my skin. Since they contain harsh acids, I use them at night and make sure to use sunscreen every morning since they make your skin more sensitive to the sun. But since my skin is slightly sensitive and can be reactive, I’ve learned that hard way that I have to rotate in the heavy-duty ones to keep everything calm. After cleansing my skin, here are the nighttime products I use to fight acne: **In general, it’s better to go thinnest to thickest when layering skincare products** 1. Allies of Skin - Mandelic Pigmentation Corrector Night Serum This serum has made the biggest difference in the overall smoothness and evenness of my skin. Another anti-aging serum, it’s powered by alpha hydroxy acids (mandelic, lactic and salicylic acids) which speed up cellular renewal and lighten dark spots, while a natural retinol alternative (bakuchiol) reduces multiple signs of aging. Like retinol, bakuchiol is great for smoothing the skin and is effective in reducing the appearance of acne - only it’s much more gentle and better for people with sensitive skin. 2. OLE HENRIKSEN - Invigorating Night Transformation Gel This product is designed to target the signs of aging, but its AHA complex (glycolic & lactic acids) has been a great chemical exfoliant for my acne-prone skin. In addition to targeting wrinkles, it acts as a solution for dark spots, dullness and unevenness. 3. C&C by Clean & Clear - Persa-Gel 10, Maximum Strength When there’s an active pimple on my face that’s super red and irritable, I always apply this powerful gel to help speed things up. This spot treatment contains 10% benzoyl peroxide and goes to work quickly by penetrating deep into the skin. All of these products can be drying, so I also make sure to mix in a hyaluronic acid serum and hydrating facial oil to keep everything balanced.

Products That Have Been Great for Maskne
Maskne has been throwing me for a loop and it’s been really difficult to figure out how to prevent and combat these pesky breakouts, especially as someone who has acne-prone skin and is already dealing with breakouts of my own. I’ve found that it really comes down to exfoliation and making sure that your skin is thoroughly cleansed after wearing a mask (plus, making sure that your mask is clean and that you’re not using creamy/oily makeup and skincare products). Here are of my maskne superheroes: dermalogica - Precleanse Cleansing Oil This deep-cleansing oil melts make-up and impurities from the skin and helps remove those pore-clogging layers of oil, sunscreen, environmental pollutants and residual products that are building up under your mask and getting ready to cause breakouts. This is a really great cleansing oil and I recommend using it at night after a long day of wearing a mask. It’s meant to be used before a regular cleanser as the first step in double cleansing, so make sure that you follow up with a water-based or gel-like cleanser afterwards to really get into those pores and get rid of all the buildup. If you’re worried about it irritating your skin, know that it’s also formulated with essential fatty acids to nourish and replenish the skin barrier. I will be repurchasing this when it runs out and would recommend it to a friend! FIRST AID BEAUTY - Facial Radiance Pads Any exfoliating product will do, but I’ve found that FAB’s Radiance Pads have been great for keeping maskne at bay. It’s designed for sensitive skin types and contains glycolic and lactic acids to promote exfoliation and brightness. I like to use them as a toner/exfoliation moment after I double cleanse to really make sure that all the pore-clogging gunk is out of my skin. Since it’s sensitive skin-approved, you don’t have to worry about any stinging or irritation and it also helps improve overall texture and tone over time. These are my all-time favorite pads and I’d definitely recommend them to a friend. OLE HENRIKSEN - Invigorating Night Transformation Gel Now that everything is cleaned and exfoliated, it’s important to treat the affected areas as well. I like to use this at night as a spot treatment and focus it on the areas that are most susceptible to breaking out (my jawline, chin, nose, cheekbones, etc.) It’s a thick serum gel that’s formulated with potent AHAs to smooth skin texture, even tone, and reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles while you sleep. It’s great for sensitive skin and doesn’t cause irritation, so it’s gentle enough for nightly use. Just make sure you wear sunscreen the next day. I like having it around but I don’t know if I’ll repurchase it. I’ve found that Clean & Clear’s Persagel 10 spot treatment is also really good as well, and it’s more affordable.

Minis that made it to full sizes for me!
Did you know in the late 1800s, German pharmacist Albert Boehringer uncovered how to pass-produce lactic acid when he realized it was a byproduct of fermented sugar and starch in sour milk via bacteria? PRODUCTS: 💙Sheer Transformation Perfecting Moisturizer is a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer that is rich in antioxidants (formulated with multi-fruit acids, licorice extract, and pea extract). This best-selling moisturizer targets dryness, dark spots, dullness, and uneven texture. •Licorice extract: has strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, soothes/hydrates skin, and fades dark spots due to an active ingredient in licorice root called Glabridin. •Pea extract: has anti-aging, anti-elastase, anti-collagenase, and anti-free radical properties. It also moisturizers and firms skin. 💙Invigorating Night Transformation Gel is a lightweight, age-fighting night serum that is formulated with AHAs (including glycolic and lactic acids and microalgae) that smoothen skins texture, evens your skin tone, and reduces the look of fine lines and wrinkles. •glycolic acid: exfoliates the outermost layer of the skin, stimulates collagen production, and has antibacterial and antioxidant properties. •lactic acid: kills bacteria, reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, increases cell turnover, and helps reduce acne. •microalgae: hydrates skin, brightens skins complexion, and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. MY THOUGHTS: I purchased these minis a few months ago to test out before buying the full sizes and I’d like to say that both full sized products are currently en route to my house! I was so pleasantly surprised by both products, especially the moisturizer. It is extremely lightweight and makes my skin feel so smooth. I also really enjoyed the gel night mask and had no issues with irritation or breakouts. Both products are super gentle and work well with all skin types. SIDE NOTE: Both products are CLEAN at Sephora 🌱Sheer Transformation Perfecting Moisturizer is vegan. 🐰Invigorating Night Transformation Gel is cruelty-free.

No more dark spots night time routine 🥱

I use Ole Henriksen truth juice daily cleanser OLE HENRIKSEN - Truth Juice Daily Cleanser Then, I use OLE HENRIKSEN - Glow2OH Dark Spot Toner I use this toner on a cotton pad and apply all over my face and neck, I love this toner it’s been a life saver. No more dark spots, acne spots or discolouration! I follow it up with The Ordinary - Lactic Acid 5% + HA I love this product but it can be harsh on the skin if you’re new to using it! Be careful and read up on it. I then use OLE HENRIKSEN - Invigorating Night Transformation Gel one of my favourite gel/ serums! Disclaimer I’m a huge ole fan I feel a lot of the products have been super good with my skin Next I use the OLE HENRIKSEN - Goodnight Glow Retin-Alt Sleeping Crème the smell alone is enough to make me keep using it. Minis saved me!
I got these cute little minis from the 3 Little Wonders Mini Set. This set also includes the mini size Truth serum which I love. However these 2 products didn’t impress me. The Sheer Transformation Perfecting Moisturizer is an okay moisturizer. It has a little thick consistency which I am not a huge fan of. It blends away easily but it can feel heavy especially when you layer it with other products. I was so excited to try the Invigorating Night Transformation Gel. I love products which has a gel-like texture but this product😣 I tried to use it in many ways. By layering, without layering, just this but it keeps on peeling off like glue🤦♀️ so annoying!!! I thought this would be my HG when I opened it because of the texture :( The full size of these are $40 & $38 respectively and I would not buy the full size. A great thing about trying out minis is that it can save you a lot of $$ 😉

The Importance of Layering Skincare in Order
In the past couple of weeks, I wasn’t seeing much of a progress in how my skin was going. Yes, my skin was cleaner but I still felt like I was mostly improvising the order of the products. That’s when I decided to research how to properly apply skincare products. From my extensive research, I discovered the right order for AM and PM skincare routines. AM: 💫 Cleanser I start my day with the OLE HENRIKSEN - Find Your Balance Oil Control Cleanser 💫💫 Toner I then go in with my OLE HENRIKSEN - Balancing Force Oil Control Toner I simply put some on a cotton pad and get rid of the remaining dirt and rebalance my pH. 2.5: Jade roller massage This is a step I do to help with the inflammation from remaining/new cystic acne that works amazingly. The cooling effect of the SMARTR SKIN - Jade Roller for Face with Gua Sha facial tool does wonders. 💫💫💫 Serums The serum I use in the morning is the OLE HENRIKSEN - Truth Serum It smells great and helps brighten my skin. 💫💫💫💫 Eye cream For this step, I use the OLE HENRIKSEN - Banana Bright Eye Crème It helps brighten under my sleep deprived eyes and has a light shimmer to it. 💫💫💫💫💫 Moisturizer I used to use the OLE HENRIKSEN - C-Rush Brightening Double Crème which I previously gave a 5 star review to. In the long run, I saw that my skin was getting oiler when I used this moisturizer. The one I am currently using is the OLE HENRIKSEN - Sheer Transformation Perfecting Moisturizer which is light and gel like and very refreshing. 💫💫💫💫💫💫 Face oil I’ve recently received a sample of BIOSSANCE - Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil and this face oil is the most exquisite and light face oil I’ve ever tried. Definitely purchasing the full size bottle. 💫💫💫💫💫💫💫 Sunscreen My sunscreen is the VICHY - Idéal Soleil Ultra-Light Face Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50 which I apply consistently on my face throughout the day whether I go outside or not. PM: 💫 Cleanser I use the same cleanser as the AM. It helps take out all the dirt accumulated during the day. 💫💫 Toner Same here! I use the same toner as the AM and my face feels refreshed before going to bed. 💫💫💫 Serums Here, I go with the OLE HENRIKSEN - Invigorating Night Transformation Gel When I wake up, my face feels unbelievable. The chemical exfoliator does one hell of a trick. 💫💫💫💫 Eye cream I purchased this Kiehl's - Creamy Eye Treatment With Avocado a while back but couldn’t wear it during the day due to its thickness. I now wear it at night and it stays on all night long. 💫💫💫💫💫 Moisturizer I finish up with my moisturizer OLE HENRIKSEN - Sheer Transformation Perfecting Moisturizer This might not work for everyone but, I’m definitely seeing changes!

My Mental Wellness Improved Through My Self AcceptanceWhen I was around 13 or 14 years old, I remember routinely taking one of my older sister’s black eyeliner pencils before school every morning. I’d arrive early so that I could slip away to the girl’s bathroom to apply a single black line to my eyelids. My parents didn’t allow me to wear any makeup at the time. Although this smudgy line on my eyelids didn’t make me look all that much different, I never felt comfortable at school without it. My teenage mind convinced myself that I needed some sort of cosmetic symbol in order to appropriately express my femininity. Up until that point in my life, society had told girls that looked like me - tall, Black, and with kinky hair - that we somehow weren’t as beautiful as the other girls. For far too long, I believed it too.Feb. 17
