The Importance of Finding Your Skin Confidence

In our Cherie Profiles series, we will spotlight a different Cherie user and share their beauty story.Tell us about your skin journey "For me, I've had cystic acne since the 5th grade. For the longest time, it was something that affected my self-esteem. Friends and family would ask me what was going on with my skin, what I was using on my it, or what was going on in my life, and it was a sensitive topic for me to navigate through. I'd shy away from the topic of my skin and act like nothing was happening, but over the years I had to build thick skin and step in front of my fear. I had to learn to share my skin journey and my fears; and the more I talked about my skin journey the more confident I got. I felt more in control. More people were even sharing their tips and advice. My cousin even recommended me her dermatologist, which I would've never found out about without sharing my story. So, sharing my journey helped me on my journey."What things helped you gain your skin confidence?"Community. There's a community for everything, but you have to look for it. I used to go on YouTube and see if other people were sharing stories similar to mine. Listening to their stories and experiences helped me find the right suggestions I needed to help my own skin. This last year, I wanted to start documenting my journey too, and so I hopped on YouTube and discovered cherie to do so. The more I started talking and sharing, the more fun I started having and I realized that my skin isn't something I should be afraid of. Finding a community I could relate to was really what did it."What were some high points in your skin journey? Low points?"One low point was when my cystic acne was so bad that it hurt to smile. It interfered with my social life, both IRL and online. I shyed away from photos and hanging out because of my skin. It was anxiety inducing. A high point, though, was when I found a dermatologist that I could connect with and help me understand my skin. Having that dermatologist helped me figure out the things that work for me like the right regimen, eating habits, and even sleep habits."How did you find the right dermatologist for you?"When I chose a dermatologist, I knew I wanted someone who would help me build my skin confidence. Someone who could give me the tools and products to treat my skin the next time breakouts ever happened.I found my derm from a combination of word of mouth, reviews, and trusting my gut. I've had cystic acne since the 5th grade and some derms I've seen, I could tell their intention was to push a product or skincare line versus really treating what's going on with me. The derm that I found was through my cousin, and when I went to visit for the first time, I really checked in with myself and observed whether or not I felt like my derm was really considering my needs and skin. I didn't feel like she just gave me a blanket regimen to try for 30 days, but instead she was someone who was truly interested in my well being."Best advice for those just starting their skin journey?"The biggest thing I want to share is that for anyone who is experieincing skincare issues is to know that it's a journey and that it's not something that you will overcome overnight. For anyone that is encountering it, the best way to navigate the journey to the destiniation of having skin you feel comfortable in is to be consistent. Don't shy away, step up and take control of it."What does beauty mean to you?"Just being confident and showing up in whatever way you choose to show upl whether that's bare skin or a beat face, beauty is just showing up as authentically as you choose to show up."What does being a creator on cherie mean to you?"Being a creator on cherie to me feels like I found my tribe. I feel like I get to show up as my true self on cherie, just sharing my experience. It's created a space for us to authentically show up for each other. It just feels like you have a community."
