Are you ruining the strength of your SPF?You might not even realize you’re doing it.
Slathering on SPF on a daily basis can seem like a chore, especially if you don’t have one that you particularly love. It’s the grand finale to one’s skincare routine and you certainly don’t want to skimp. While SPF is the easiest way to fight anti-aging throughout life, it doesn’t do its job without some exceptions. We know of few rules when it comes to sunscreen other than ‘reapply’ and always check the expiration dates. But as it turns out, SPF is a bit more complicated than we think. You can actually ruin the efficacy of your SPF before it even reaches your face. The skincare sin in question? Mixing your SPF with other products. The most common case being with moisturizer. This is something everyone is guilty of at doing at least once in their lives, following suit with pimple popping and falling asleep with makeup on. Everyone is always looking for ways to cut down the length of their routine but let it be known that this ‘hack’ is simply not it. To get the SPF facts we needed, we spoke to Dr. Caren Campbell, San Francisco based Board Certified Dermatologist. She says, it’s all about keeping the formula stable. Skip the mixing Basically, it all comes down to chemistry. Sunscreen is heavily tested, regulated, and managed by the FDA more than any other type of skincare product on the market. It’s something made to deliver daily protection and we have to be able to rely on it for safety purposes. “It's [ sunscreen ] been rigorously tested by the FDA in its current formulation and you are diluting it, altering it and potentially decreasing its effectiveness when you mix it with other topicals for the skin,” explains Dr. Campbell. 2-in-1 products are completely different! Don’t panic. And certainly don’t run to the trash to dump your SPF moisturizer or foundation. Consider yourself in the clear. The FDA regulates these formulas, remember? Which means your 2-in-1 is intended exactly as it should be and will deliver on it’s SPF promise! “Most of the "all-in-ones" contain chemical sunscreens, which do not protect against as broad a spectrum of rays and absorb the UV rays rather than reflecting which can make sun sensitive conditions worse (ie - melasma, rosacea).” says Dr. Campbell. While 2-in-1 products certainly deliver on the SPF level they advertise, they’re not for everyone. And most do not deliver on the broad spectrum front. A long day laying out on the beach under direct sun exposure isn’t exactly the best setting for a 2-in-1. An occasion that ensures a lower sun exposure risk, like working from home, is perhaps a better choice for this type of product. If you can weaken SPF, can you somehow make it stronger? You sure can! It doesn’t work in the sense that you can turn an SPF 30 into an SPF 50 though. Skincare isn’t that magical unfortunately. But you can broaden the number of things you’re protected from, like free radicals. Think of any kind of environmental pollution as a free radical. Things like cigarette smoke, dust, smog, and pesticides can all create free radicals in the air. Free radicals dehydrate your skin overtime leading to dullness, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. “Vitamin C makes your sunscreen work better as it is a topical antioxidant that fights free radical damage from UV rays so applying you vitamin C prior to your sunscreen is a great idea, but not mixing them,” says Dr. Campbell. Making sure your morning skincare routine includes a Vitamin C serum or moisturizer (opt for something that doesn’t get washed off) is key in providing your skin the antioxidant protection it needs in conjunction with your SPF. Stick to layering If you mix your favorite moisturizer with your SPF 30, you can’t exactly count on it delivering that SPF protection level anymore. The active ingredients have been diluted and the formula isn’t in its intended form. If we’re thinking in terms of how SPF builds a protective barrier on our face, it can’t fully build a barrier against UV light and rays if it’s being broken apart by ingredients in your moisturizer. It can no longer give you the physical or chemical (depending on how you like your SPFs) protection it’s intended to give if it is made to be weak. Mixing the two may have you finished with your skincare routine in record time and you might be achieving a dreamy texture due to your cocktailing effortis. But the bottom line is, if you want to stay as protected as possible you need to layer your products. Or find a 2-in-1 product if you think it suits your routine and lifestyle better. Clear skin the gentle way?
Thank you @cheriefor this amazing gift 🤩 “buh-koo-chee-all” HERBIVORE - Bakuchiol Anti-Aging Serum I’ve already become a diehard Herbivore lover. So to receive this beauty was super exciting. When I started my acne journey on Cherie I was (and still am) a Differin Acne Gel stan. This was my choice of retinol and I wanted it strong to treat acne and boost my cellular turnover. Now that my acne is currently under control and it’s getting hot again, I definitely want something smooth and gentle. Bakuchiol is a gentler alternative to the very popular ingredient retinol. So essentially you’ll get overall youthful results for your skin. I haven’t tested this on my acne theory yet, but overall my face has been smooth and irritation free. This serum does not have a smell which I love for products of this caliber. I also love that it’s light and not drying at all. I use this at night and since i have a tolerance to retinol I use it every night. I haven’t been using it long enough to see results (about 12 weeks) but I definitely can’t wait to finish this. Have you tried Bakuchiol?

I was using this EVERY night but last night I used my acne treatment routine and your girl FELT THAT (salicylic acid can be so drying to my combo skin). What’s my favorite part? This baby doesn’t have a smell or heavy greasy feel, so it perfect year round! At $21 this is a DEAL ! (The line I used on my cheek covered the entire bottom portion of my face!) At Home Exfoliating Facial ✨✨
So I recently received the Mimi Co Exfoliating Wand via IG PR. I couldn’t wait to do a full facial and I decided to do it tonight. Order: I purchased a steamer from Amazon for $23 and I’m obsessed with it (DM me for product info). I started with UpCircle - Cleansing Face Balm With Apricot Powder As my oil cleanse to get my sunscreen from today off and any other oils and dirts. INDIE LEE - Purifying Face Wash This cleanser is perfect for getting dirts and oils from skin as well. It’s not drying and it’s totally worth it! I paired it with a face cleansing scrub brush, I also purchased from Amazon. I love it and I paid around $20 for it as well! It doubles the vibration frequency put out by Foreo. CLARISMA - Namaste Glow Energizing Face Mask This was the mask I chose for the enzyme properties. This breaks down dirts and oils in pores and dead skin cells. I also steamed my face during this time. Follain - Toning Mist: Balance + Prime This was what I sprayed over my face for the prep for my exfoliating wand. I didn’t have a true medium and I am out of Aloe Vera plants so😭 I then exfoliated with my wand starting at my cheeks and working upward and then to my forehead. I went down and to the sides of my nose. Glow slow! innisfree - Jeju Lava Seawater Lotion I used the toner to cleanse my skin and get any dirts left over from me exfoliating. SUMMER FRIDAYS - Jet Lag Mask I use this as my hydrating mask. I took the back of my Mimi Co Wand on switched to the Moisturizing Setting. I gently slid upwards my entire face for the last 2 mins only and then wiped the mask off with a damp cloth. earthtoskin - Tea Time Anti Aging Eye Cream This is the most hydrating eye cream I own. I used this with the back of my cleansing brush on the heat setting! Yes it made my eye feel so hydrated and relaxed. fresh - Lotus Anti-Aging Night Moisturizer This was the final step as a good moisturizer seals in everything! To prevent acne I use the SUNDAY RILEY - U.F.O. Ultra-Clarifying Face Oil as my last step. I didn’t use an astringent type toner, so I wanted to still treat my skin💚
Clear Hydrated Skin The Clean Way✨
Staying in the trend of clean beauty, I have found an amazing product to add to my everyday routine. Odacité SKINCARE - Blue Aura Cleansing Water This is a cleansing water that is marketed to use in place of your cleanser for a “quick” clean. When looking for a good cleansing water, you want one that is hydrating and gets your face clean. Keep in mind not all cleansing waters are designed to clean makeup (I highly recommend a cleansing balm and cleanser). About This Brand: ✨Vegan ✨Cruelty Free ✨Certified Organic ✨ NO: Fillers | Parabens | Nanoparticles | Petrochemicals | PEG | Synthetic perfumes | Dyes | Phenoxyethanol. This cleansing water is so hydrating and satisfying to use. It smells very fresh and a little goes a long way. What is very important to me is my dry spot aren’t tight or irritated. I have been using this day and night and have seen amazing results acne and skin barrier wise. I included this in my routine after a regular cleanser and before my serums. So essentially, I use this as a “toner”. I do this to clean up anything my cleanse left behind, or the cleanser itself. INGREDIENTS: ✨Tumeric: Amazing for hyperpigmentation and overall skin brightness ✨Holy Basil: I drink the tea and can vouch this is an amazing adaptogen that can overall benefit every aspect of your life. It combats aging and free radical damage. ✨Neem: great anti aging ingredient that helps protects your skin barrier. ✨Aloe Vera Juice: this is great for your skin barrier overall. It hydrated, protects and brightens. I highly recommend this cleansing water and it is on sale for $9 at Boxycharm Pop Up 🥰🥰
