Differin tips from dermatologists-
-Thanks for reading me in advance!-
This post is to inform newbies about the right application and how to incorporate it with your other skincare.
How to apply it and a safe skincare routine while using Differin:
For you to take advantage of the ingredients, apply a very tiny amount into your face three times a week. This is important if you are a beginner. A strong ingredient like this could cause inflammation to your skin. You will also experience three weeks of purging while using differin.
A good nighttime routine to follow while using differin:
- Use a gentle cleanser for your face. I suggest:
Try to wet your face with lukewarm water. Hot water will overly dry out the surface of your skin. Into your wet face, apply a small amount of the cleanser into your hands while doing gentle circles into your face. Rinse off with lukewarm water (not too hot, not too cold). Try to avoid scrubbing, exfoliate, or using any harsh soaps (such a salicylic acid soaps). A mild, gentle cleanser should do the job for you. *do not dry your face yet*
- To the wet face, you are going to apply a moisturizer. Why not after I dry it? -you might ask- this trick helps you to seals the water into your skin, and it prevents it from evaporating. You would not like to put the differin into dry skin. Let it dry completely. *a helpful trick that helped while being in retinoid is applying an ointment while my face is drying (a stick and greasy formula) around the corners of my mouth, around the corners of my nose, and around the corners of my eyes. I did its because those were sensible areas where harsh products, like this, should not go*
- Now that the face is moisturized, it will absorb better the differin product. You will only need a pea size of this product into your finger. You can dot into your forehead, cheeks, chin, and nose (avoid your sunglass area). Then you just gently massage it into your face. Do not combine differin with anything else if this is your first time trying it.
In the beginning, your skin will start to peel while working on those acne spots. All other products that you might add it might cause a distraction, which means it might not allow the differin to work better, it will create more irritation, more inflammation, and it will just cause a harder process for you. So simple is better :)
A good morning skincare routine while on differin:
- You can go ahead now and wash your face with a salicylic acid cleanser
LA ROCHE-POSAY Effaclar Medicated Gel Cleanser for Acne Prone Skin
Do not mix Salicylic acid with differin in the same routine. It is fine to use it the following morning :). Always wash your face with lukewarm water, do not forget this. Your face is going to get sensible the first three-four weeks so try to be gentle while scrubbing your face.
- To avoid the dryness while on differin dermatologists suggest using moisturizers that have hyaluronic acid as an ingredient.
Remember to apply it to wet skin to seal the moisture into your skin.
- Once your face is somewhat dry, proceed to apply an SPF of 30-50 main titanium dioxide-based sunscreen. This is a critical step while you are on differin, why? because this medication work on the surface of your skin meaning that it is sensible to the UV rays of the sun.
Excessive sun will cause you to break you out, discoloration as well as making the acne hard to heal, so avoid the sun as much as you can. Apply it around your neck, ears, and your face as well.
Benzoyl Peroxide can be combined with Differin, it is perfectly safe to apply it. The only thing for newbies is that you have to wait for your skin to get used to differin and THEN incorporate benzoyl peroxide into your skin. This will avoid irritation in the skin. A good benzoyl peroxide product to use is
Again, a pea size of the product can be applied in your skin.
I hope this small information helps you!
I wish you look in your skincare journal, and I also suggest to inform yourself more with Dr. Dray youtube channel. Such a great dermatologist that can clear any misinformation or doubts about your skin.

Curology vs The Ordinary! Which is better?!
Curology - Curology formula This is the first photo! Did wonders for my skin it was the best it had ever been since I started getting acne in middle school. Curology literally saved my skin, it was clear and great! (Over a year later) The second photo:/ I decided to stop using curology around 2 months ago and start using ordinary products. I decided to do this because I wanted to see if the ordinary could do the same thing as curology and maybe make my skin even better. This wasn’t because curology was bad or anything It was just something I wanted to test. I was pretty confident in my skin so I didn’t think it would be bad. I saw on social media how great it was so I figured why not? ... After slowly introducing ordinary products into my skincare routine to ( i used both ordinary and curology products together) I could see that my skin was breaking out more when I introduced the ordinary products. I didn’t think much of it cause I knew that my skin was just purging from the new products. After about 2 months of using both curology and ordinary products I decided to just try ordinary products because my skin was breaking out a lot and I felt that the ordinary would help it. (I think should’ve stuck with curology but this was just my curiosity about the product). ... (Now) I am on week 6 of using all ordinary products and this is what my skin looks like (photo 2) and I’m not happy with the results:/The first couple weeks I knew I would be purging, my skin was at its worst a couple weeks ago (week 3). But I figured that by now or next week my skin would be clear( the only reason I felt that my skin would be pretty much clear by now or next week was because while using curology all my acne was gonna by week 7). So I’m still trying to figure out if I wanna continue to use the ordinary products for a couple more weeks before I give up because it’s not giving me the results I want. The Ordinary - Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% I don’t really know how to rate this because obviously it hasn’t worked for my skin very well but I’m not sure if it’s because my skin needs more time to adjust (it has been 6 weeks so...). I think that this product works great for some people but for me definitely not. Right from the start of using it, it broke me out and then once I only used this line of products it made my skin terrible. I also used The Ordinary - Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution Which didn’t do much in the 6weeks I used it. I did feel like it helped my acne a little. Overall I really did wish this line of products would help my acne and make my skin clear like curology but that wasn’t the case. This product line is definitely not for my skin. I’ll write out my skin care routine comparisons in my next post!
