Have you been feeling down lately? It’s not surprising! There is a lot going on in the world right now. Everyone whether they realize it or not has had their lives changed in some way or another after the Lockdowns.
It’s important now more than ever to stay positive. When mental health experts use the word positivity, it can seem a bit daunting. What does it mean to be positive? Is it just thinking happy thoughts? Affirmations in the mirror?
Positivity, and staying positive, can be made easier when broken down. If you’re here reading this on the Cherie app, then it’s safe to say you’re a skincare enthusiast...so let's talk about skin positivity and a few tips and tricks when you’re feeling down!
Why do we need skin positivity?
Besides the obvious that a positive attitude leads to a positive life, skin positivity is important for a pretty simple reason: your mental health directly affects your skin
How does stress affect our skin? When we aren’t in a good place mentally we naturally experience increased stress. Whatever the cause may be, stress increases cortisol production in the body leads to a lot of nasty side effects. More specifically for our skin this leads to acne and increased sensitivity.
It’s a vicious cycle. You’re stressed out and it shows in your skin, you become stressed about your skin, and it leads to more problems!
How do we develop skin positivity?
It’s hard to just decide to be positive and not worry. It doesn’t happen overnight. Little changes day in and day out are key.
We all know that using the right skincare products to troubleshoot skin concerns are important, but what else should we focus on?
Diet
While I’m not a certified nutritionist, I am an esthetician who has seen plenty of clients (including myself!) lose confidence in their skin and can’t seem to break the cycle. The first thing I ask about after looking at their skincare regimen is their diet.
This doesn’t have to be complicated. You can be low-carb, high-carb, plant-based, or an omnivore; the key to any diet is whole foods close to the source, plenty of water, and eating enough calories to sustain your body. If you’re eating foods known to trigger acne (fried food and candy, I’m looking at you), their effects will only be multiplied if you’re stressed as well.
Exercise
The second biggest thing I ask clients about is exercise. You don’t have to be a gym guru or yoga master to get your body moving and lower your cortisol levels. Walking several times a week outside is enough and a great way to help your skin, energy levels, and overall confidence.
The Takeaway
Skin positivity is not something that you may ever feel you’ve mastered. It comes and goes- we have good days and bad days. That’s ok! Staying positive about your skin means doing the little things that are within your grasp to counteract the negativity in your life.

THE inkey LIST - Caffeine Eye Cream Why I like the Inkeylist caffeine eye cream: ✔️ Lightweight texture blends very easily ✔️ Hydrating ✔️ Can help reduce puffiness ✔️ Antioxidant ingredients help fight off free radicals from the sun and pollution ✔️ Can help improve the appearance of dark circles ✔️ Fragrance free- no smell to it! ✔️ Affordable ✨ It is one of my favorite go-to eye creams because of the caffeine which really helps with my puffy eyes in the morning and has helped with my dark circles. I also really like that it blends in easily, is fragrance free, and affordable. I like using this once a day in the morning but this can be used twice a day. I like using it in the mornings because it really helps with my puffy eyes (which is worse in the morning for me!). I notice an immediate effect on the puffiness around my eyes. It took a few weeks to notice the improvement on my dark circles. What do you think about this eye cream? Comment below!
HOW TO: AT-HOME BLOWOUT
HOW TO: AT-HOME BLOWOUT
At-home blowouts are the future of hair styling! Ever since I went to Dry Bar a year ago to get a blowout for $80 (which is just ridiculous in my opinion), I’ve been mastering my at-home blowout. I purchased the Revlon One-Step Volumizer Hair Dryer at Ulta which completely changed the game for my hair after shower hair routine! REVLON - One-Step Volumizer Hair Dryer Bonus Tip: Remember to spray a heat protectant in your hair before drying it. 😊 OUAI - Heat Protection Spray To get max volume and flipped ends, I take 1 inch sections and start at the root of my hair. I go as slowly as possible so that all of my roots are dry. Next, I twist the brush so that my hair is wrapped around it all the way down the section of hair. I repeat this process until I reach the top of my head. Lastly, I take a straightener to flatten any flyaways or unwanted curls if there are any left. That’s it! In total, the entire process takes me about 20 minutes. My hair feels so soft, light, and looks amazing afterwards. The next time you think about going to purchase a blowout, I recommend trying it at home first! 💕

Share your own journey in 🏷 Beauty Year-in-review “From starting 2020 with a seven day old newborn baby and all the crazy hormones and changes to my body, skin and hair which goes with a new baby (yes, this is why I look exhausted and have something spilt on my top in the February photo 🙈😂) to a global pandemic which resulted in my husband working from home and suddenly needing to learn how to homeschool my older daughter this year has been crazy and challenging to adjust and find the right balance.”
A Year in review!
A Year in review!
This year has definitely been a wild ride. I’ve learned so much more about my hair and skin in this last year than I ever thought I would or needed to know! All the way from using witch hazel and not paying attention to my curl pattern, to staying completely fragrance free with face products and staying away from harsh toners and paying attention to what my hair was trying to do! Using this app has really opened doors for me that I wouldn’t thought possible for my beauty process! I can’t wait to see what more years bring me, and us! Thank you @cherie!

What is the product? Avène - Thermal Spring Water Spray How does it work? Thermal Water works by soothing the skin and calming any irritation What are the notable ingredients? Mineral Spring Water What is the price? $18.50CAD Where can you purchase? Shoppers Drug Mart, Rexall Pharmacy and online How long have I been using it for? I’ve been using thermal water for over two years, I started off using this product on my body and now still use it on my face What is my experience ? My experience with thermal water has been good, I suffer from eczema on both my body and face. It was hard finding products that wouldn’t irritate or cause a flare up. When that happened this product saved my skin and soothed it. At first I was not exactly sure how water would help my skin, but after doing research thermal waters are meant to have healing properties for the body and skin. What are my thoughts? This product is nothing short of amazing, you are able to use it for multiple areas and it lasts so long. The mist is super fine which makes it perfect for spraying on large or small spots, and pressing into the skin similar to how you apply a toner. Would I recommend to a friend? I would absolutely recommend this product to a friend or family or even someone looking to help soothe their skin but who doesn’t want to break the bank!! My overall rating? 5/5 Would I repurchase? I have and will continue to repurchase this product until I find something that exceeds how amazing this is! #CheriePartner
