Non-toxic nail polishes: decoded and demystified
You’ll sometimes hear people talking about 3-free, 5-free, 7-free, 8-free or even 10-free nail polishes. No, this is not some Fibonacci maths nerd meets nail polishes moment, and if you’re not clued up yet on what these terms mean, then for the safety of your nails and your body, should read on.
Nail polishes look awesome. They’re bright, they’re sparkly, they’re glossy, they’re fun. But traditionally, to get them to look that way, manufacturers of nail polish have had to use some pretty toxic chemicals. You might be wondering what does it matter, because if they sit on your nails, well, they just sit on your nails. But unfortunately, far too many people have a habit of biting their nails, and it’s when these toxic chemicals are ingested that bad things can happen. Thankfully, the beauty industry has heard consumers’ cries for a safer nail polish over the years, and by and large have begun removing some ingredients which are known to be harmful from their nail products. Depending on how many of these ingredients they’ve omitted, you call them “x-free”. So for example, if the nail polish is missing 3 toxic ingredients, it’s called “3-free”.
Before I crack on with some nail polish recommendations, we’re going to do a quick chemistry lesson so you can impress your besties with some trivia next time you’re out.
These nail polishes don’t contain the so called “Toxic Trio” of dibutyl phthalate (DBP), toluene and formaldehyde. Thank goodness because these are the most toxic and most commonly found ingredients in mainstream polishes. How toxic? See for yourself:
DBP: toxic; potentially dangerous effects on developmental growth, reproduction (US Environmental Protection Agency)
Toluene: found in petroleum, and a dangerous substance that could be toxic with prolonged exposure (US Environmental Protection Agency)Formaldehyde: a possible carcinogen (National Cancer Institute)
In addition to leaving out the Toxic Trio, 5 free polishes also exclude formaldehyde resin and camphor.
Formaldehyde resin: nail hardener that can cause contact dermatitis
Camphor: when inhaled in large doses, can cause skin redness and irritation.
These polishes leave out everything 5 free polishes do, and are also free from ethyl tosylamide and xylene.
Ethyl tosylamide: not a carcinogen, but can cause headache, dizziness and nausea.
Xylene: when xylene vapour is inhaled in small amounts, it can cause headache, dizziness and nausea, and when inhaled in larger doses, it can cause sleepiness, stumbling, irregular heartbeat or even death.
Personally, I tend to go for 5-free at the very least, better safe than sorry right?
So what is a good, natural nail polish?
There’s so much stuff out there and it’s all dependent on personal choice, needs and tastes. But I thought it’d be useful to share with everyone examples of nail polish brands that I rate which are 5-free+. Just so you have an idea what to look for.
#1: Olive & June (7-free)
Just to show you that healthy and natural doesn’t mean expensive, I’ve picked Olive & June, which goes at $8 a pop. They’re an LA-based nail salon that makes 7-free nail polishes, because of all the good stuff they’re doing, they’re becoming a thing in the industry. Their salon itself is pretty much always booked out! The catch: there’s only less than ten shades out right now, but if you find your colour then these are absolutely great.
#2: RGB (5-free)
Dries super fast, the pigments are amazing. What’s more, it’s proudly made in the U.S. and cruelty-free too! I love the smooth and silky texture that makes this polish glide lightly across my nails. If you’re looking to make a statement, try the Oxblood colour, it’s an absolute fav. At about $18 a bottle, it’s enough to keep you going for at least a year.
#3: Butter London (8-free)
butter LONDONTrend Nail Lacquer
This has always been a great polish boasting a dense brush that lets you easily put on a professional-looking gloss from the comfort of your home. They have great staying power and don’t chip, which makes the Patent Shine 10X collection a very popular choice that many people love and trust.
When it comes to nail polishes, it’s more than just colour and feel. Because substance matter so much more than just good looks, when it comes to ingredients, staying free from toxic chemicals should be non-negotiable. My Ulta Black Friday haul ✨
So upon seeing the ad for Ulta’s Black Friday I told myself I wasn’t going to purchase anything... three separate purchases later I found myself with a completely pink haul (which is completely out of character for me 😂) The first thing I picked up on Black Friday was the ANASTASIA Beverly Hills - Nicole Guerriero Glow Kit which I have used a few times since then. I’m absolutely blown away how stunning this is on the cheeks. I feel like ABH is the queen of highlighters that look subtle but still give you that bam out of this world glow from within. Later on in the night I decided I needed the COLOURPOP - Lux Lip Oilin the shade Truth Bomb and the #Colourpop - Amourex Glitterly Obsessed Mini Duo[products]#. I have two glitter gels by Colourpop and I absolutely love them despite not using them often. The mini pots are super cute and I don’t feel wasteful if I don’t use them. Then, on Saturday I purchased the ANASTASIA Beverly Hills - Haute Holiday Lip Gloss Setbecause it was on sale and I’ve been obsessed with the pale nude colors since this set came out. I also impulse bought the #It Cosmetics - Rose Gold Eye Brush Set[products]#as it was also on sale (I think I paid around $20 for it) and I needed the liner brush in it for my Melt Cosmetics gel eyeliners. This set comes with four brushes which includes my absolute favorite blending brush, the number 105. It Cosmetics has the SOFTEST brushes I’ve ever used. The quality by far surpasses anything I own. It also comes with a really cute rose gold container for it. I’m hoping to have reviews up for these eventually but here is my current Ulta haul 💗 I also plan on posting my Sephora Black Friday haul and my Ulta Cyber Monday haul once I get that. What did you guys pick up for for Black Friday?
THE BEST FOUNDATION I HAVE EVER TRIED
The Profusion Feel Good Skin Perfector is the best foundation I have used HANDS DOWN, and it is only $7.🙃 - shade: medium 3 neutral - skin type: combination (this foundation has kept my face 95% matte for over 9 hours) - satin finish w/ a light-medium coverage (it is buildable) - applies best with a sponge (I use the profusion marble sponge) It made my skin look healthy and even, and it’s my new everyday favorite foundation. I am very picky with foundations, but this didn’t give me bad smile lines so it’s a 10/10 for me already. ☁️ If you haven’t yet..please try this foundation out and let me know what you think! Hope this helps your skin look BOMBBB sis💕 #Profusion - Feel Good Skin Long Wear Skin Perfector[products]#[FiveStars]
Full Face Using Products from Nov Boxy Premium✨
Hey Cherie Fam! 🍒 I finally received and unboxed my November BoxyCharm premium. For those unfamiliar with Boxycharm, it is a subscription service that gives you 5 full size make up products monthly. The base box comes with 5 items for 25 a month. If you want premium, it is 35. You get 2-3 more items than the base box. I used the star ⭐️ of the show (or rather star of the box) which is Illamasqua artistry palette. This retails for $47 USD. This palette performs well. The mattes were not patchy and the shimmers were impactful. There’s quite a fall out so I recommend doing your eye first before complexion. Then I used DoC single block eyeshadow in the shade Night Sky. This is perfect for a cool toned Smokey eye look. I used this for a pop of blue on my lower lash. #Dose of Colors - Block Party[products]# The realher lip liners come in a duo. I love the packaging because it doesn’t require sharpening. The formula was so pigmented and creamy. I was pretty impressed to be honest. I received a pencil eyeliner from the same brand on my last box and I didn’t like it at all. The Too Faced canary diamond highlighter, Lilly Lashes triple x mascara and Alamar’s gloss are from the pop up. I got them 80% off retail price! I wasn’t a fan of the mascara at first, but after applying it with a lash primer, it was amazing. It lengthened, darkened, and gave me volume. The highlighter was okay. It’s pretty but it’s quite chunky. I’m more of a subtle, glow-from-within type of highlighter. If you’re a fan of blinding highlighters, this is for you. I am a huge fan of the packaging. The lip gloss is ok. I wouldn’t pay full price for it however. Too Faced - Diamond Light Highlighter Lilly LASHES - Triple X Mascara HOURGLASS - Arch Brow Micro Sculpting Pencil aLamar COSMETICS - Desnudeas Lip Gloss Coqueta So far I am pretty satisfied with my box this month. If you are subscribed, what is your favorite product from your box? Xoxo, Francesca 💋
Pull thru braid💗
I love creating any type of braid and this is one of my favorites! I think it’s because it is so easy but it looks so cute on everyone! You are going to start by putting your hair into a high ponytail and then complete the following steps: ✨ from your ponytail take a section of hair from the left side of the ponytail in the right side of the ponytail ✨ pull behind the ponytail in elastic it together ✨ take the section of hair that is not in the elastic Together and split into two and wrapped behind the ponytail and elastic that together ✨ repeat till you get to the bottom of your hair! I used AIIR - Texture Spray to add texture to the hair before I pulled it out for more volume Give us a try this holiday season! You will love it💗 Xo, Johanna
