Treating Dark Circles From Home: Esthetician's Tips

Sep. 19
Almost all of us have shifted our day to day lives because of the pandemic. We have altered our work and social lives, our sleep schedules, and our beauty routines. And let’s not even get started on how wearing masks every day is affecting our skin!
Many people are noticing the change of schedule affecting their sleep. But lack of sleep isn’t the only cause of dark circles. Some common causes include:
  • Allergies
  • Collagen loss
  • Bone structure
  • Dehydration
  • Genetics
  • Anemia
  • Smoking
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Sun damage
  • Sleep posture
  • Alcohol intake
*Note that some of the causes above may only be treated by a healthcare professional.
We’re going to discuss some treatments you can do from home to help brighten the under-eye area. It’s important to identify what's causing your dark circles before starting a treatment. It is wise to do your research or schedule an appointment with a dermatologist or licensed esthetician if you believe you need professional help or are unsure what your cause is. And fear not; there are many options nowadays for virtual consultations and appointments!
Vitamin K
Vitamin K is naturally found in the body and is a key factor in healing processes. Blood clotting is important for preventing blood loss after injury, and internally, vitamin K helps to allow blood to remain where it should be and prevents it from consistently pooling at an injury site (without it, you’d still have every bruise you’ve ever had!) Vitamin K is also a potent antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties. Several studies have been done to test the efficacy of vitamin K applied topically for dark under-eye circles with positive results. Vitamin K helps dark, bruise-like shadows under the eyes by keeping veins functioning properly under the skin. I love this vitamin K serum because it reduces discoloration all over the face, as well as around the preorbital bone.

*Pro Tip: A vitamin C serum or eye cream also works as an antioxidant with brightening properties.
Peptide Eye Cream
Peptides are amino acids that help build collagen and elastin in the skin. Collagen loss accentuates dark circles because of the translucency it gives the skin due to thinning. Incorporating an eye cream with peptide chains will help restore the density of your under-eye area and in turn diminish the darkness underneath your eyes. Peptides are also amazing for wrinkles around the eyes!
*Pro Tip: You can use an eye cream that has peptides in it on fine lines around your mouth or in between your eyebrows!
Cool Compress
I’m sure you’ve heard of the spoon-in-the-freezer trick, where you put cool spoons over your eyes to reduce puffiness in the morning. The way cold spoons help puffiness can help with dark circles too! Cool temperatures help to reduce the appearance of prominent blood vessels. This means that the bluish-purple tint of your dark circles will lessen, and the fluid that gathers while you sleep will diminish and reduce swelling. I LOVE this gel mask that you can keep in the freezer and pop on when you need it.

Better Sleep
This may seem obvious, but it can be difficult to get a good night's rest all the time. Having a nighttime routine that you enjoy helps you stick to it. For me, it’s aromatherapy (lavender for the win!), reading, playing the piano, and of course, my nighttime skincare routine. Having a routine that you do every night in the hours leading to bedtime begins to train your body and mind to prepare for sleep. It can also be helpful to try to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day (yes, even on the weekends.) This helps your body know when it’s time to sleep so you can wake up feeling refreshed, and your under-eyes can remain bright!
Final Thoughts
There are many, many other methods that have had good results for dark circles, so remember that one size does not fit all when it comes to skincare. Things like adding an extra pillow under your head at night to reduce fluid retention under the eyes, reducing alcohol and tobacco consumption, and increasing water intake can all help brighten the under-eye area. Many times, dark circles are hereditary or caused by bone structure, but they can sometimes be treated by a doctor. As always, following a good skincare routine is step 1. It’s vital to keep your skin hydrated and protected from the sun, especially the skin under your eyes!

Textured Skin?? 3 Tried & Tested Products!
Textured Skin?? 3 Tried & Tested Products!
Up until I really started understanding🤔my skin and how certain ingredients work... I always had textured skin due to acne, blemishes and lack of regular exfoliation. Well here’s my experiences from lessons learnt throughout the years for all those people who are on the same boat as I once was.. I’ve learnt the key🔑to smoother skin is knowing the underlying issue and the reason behind your skin’s uneven texture and incorporating exfoliants in a regulated skincare routine. ⁣ When treating the uneven skin texture, you need to ask yourself whether or not you are using exfoliants (both physical and chemical)? If your answer is NO, then you have bumpy skin and you need to start incorporating an exfoliant into your skincare routine. Lactic acid is a good place to start as it suits all skin types. However, what really works for my skin type (oily/combination) is Salicylic acid. Be sure to start with an exfoliant by using once or twice a week and only take it up to using it 3 times a week. No more than this please ☺️ ⁣ If your answer is YES, then ask yourself:⁣ “How many times am I using the exfoliants and how strong are they?” If you’re using exfoliants more than 2 to 3 times a week and you still have bumpy/textured skin then there’s a high chance your skin’s barrier is not happy. Work on repairing and strengthening your skin barrier by using products geared towards providing hydration💦and moisturization. Periodically, exfoliating definitely will help improve your skin texture! Here are some of ⁣My Tried & Tested Products for bump-free skin: 1. GOOD MOLECULES - Pineapple Exfoliating Powder 2. PETER THOMAS ROTH - Peptide 21 Amino Acid Exfoliating Peel Pads 4. dermalogica - Hydro Masque Exfoliant Follow & Glow! ✨ #cheriepartner ⁣ ⁣

Hyaluronic Acid 101 x DermDoctor
Hyaluronic Acid 101 x DermDoctor
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a humectant that famously holds 1000 times its weight in water. It pulls in water from the environment and from the deeper layers of your skin. This ingredient seems to be ubiquitous in skincare products nowadays and it can be found in a lot of moisturizers. Benefits: -Immediately plumps the skin, softening fine lines and wrinkles -Hydrates the skin (specifically high-molecular-weight HA) -Assists in wound healing Dermatologist Tips: -Hyaluronic acid is your first step after cleansing -Must be applied to damp skin! -If you live in a dry climate, make sure to moisturize immediately after -Can be used once or twice a day -Safe to layer with most other skincare ingredients My Top Picks: VICHY - Minéral 89 Face Serum This contains a high-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid, which has moisturizing properties and sits on the surface of the skin without causing inflammation. It contains only 11 ingredients making it ideal for people with sensitive skin (like me). Also, Vichy’s proprietary volcanic water has actually been studied and proven to have skin protective and healing properties THE inkey LIST - Hyaluronic Acid Serum The price point here is unbeatable. Again, with a simple ingredient list, you’re unlikely to run into issues with allergy or irritation. This contains a multi-molecular-weight HA, which allows you reap additional benefits, in addition to hydration and plumping. This also has matrixyl 3000 peptide, which can stimulate collagen synthesis Neutrogena - Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Serum Both high and low-molecular weight hyaluronic acid for added benefits. This also contains glycerin (another amazing humectant) and vitamin B5 (an amazing anti-oxidant) NATURIUM - Quadruple Hyaluronic Acid Serum 5% A great option fragrance-free, cruelty-free option from Naturium! This contains multi-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid that hydrates, plumps, and repairs the skin. #CheriePartner
