How Arbutin Can Help Cure Dark Spots Hyperpigmentation?
Sep. 18, 2020
Many of us deal with pimples and acne, and one of the biggest problems is the dark marks they can leave behind afterward. While these can cause us to never leave the house without a full face of makeup, they aren’t actually permanent. Often, these dark marks fade over the years, and there are products like arbutin that can help.
What causes dark spots?
Dark spots are most often caused by scarring from pimples and other areas of broken skin. Other causes are:
- Scars from cuts and scratches (even very minor ones)
- Scars from acne and pimples
- Age spots
- Darkening/scarring from extremely dry skin (such as eczema)
How do you get rid of dark spots?
Most people will reach for lightening creams when they have a dark spot they want to magic away. These often include ingredients like vitamin C and arbutin.
What is arbutin?
Arbutin is a natural version of a controversial ingredient called hydroquinone. This ingredient isn’t popular because it has several side effects, including hypersensitivity, skin damage and irritation, and even issues with contamination.
Fortunately, arbutin is entirely natural, so you don’t have to worry about severe side effects if you want to use arbutin for dark spots. It’s much more gentle but still effective. It originates in the leaves of fruit trees and other plants. It’s effective because it prevents the formation of melanin, which, when overproduced, causes hyperpigmentation.
How does arbutin work?
Arbutin works because it inhibits something called tyrosinase, which helps melanin to form. This is an enzyme that is produced when your skin cells come into contact with UV light – it’s why you get a tan.
Because arbutin inhibits tyrosinase, melanin won’t form as easily. Arbutin doesn’t deal with hyperpigmentation by simply removing the dead cells on the surface, as exfoliators do, it penetrates the skin and prevents it from forming in the first place.
So, what are the best products if you want to use arbutin?
5 Best Products Containing Arbutin
- Paula’s Choice Radiance Renewal Mask
PAULA'S CHOICERadiance Renewal Mask
This is a great choice if you want to lighten your hyperpigmentation because it’s a mask you can leave on overnight, or during the day if you’re planning a self-care day or working from home. It contains arbutin as well as other restorative ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and niacinamide.
- Arcona Brightening Drops
ARCONABrightening Drops 1.17oz
These drops are a little on the pricy side ($44 a bottle), but a little goes a long way. These drops combine arbutin with other classic brightening ingredients, such as vitamin C and kojic acid. If you’re looking for a way to get rid of a stubborn dark area rather than using it all over, this is a great product.
- SkinCeuticals Phyto+
SKINCEUTICALSPhyto + Hydrating Botanical Serum With Kojic Acid
This is another product that combines arbutin with kojic acid. It’s a popular combination because while the arbutin helps to lighten pigmentation over time, the kojic acid keeps everything looking and feeling fresh, plump, and youthful. This particular product doesn’t always get on well with super sensitive skin, so if you’ve reacted to other skin products before, look elsewhere.
- The Ordinary. Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA
The OrdinaryAlpha Arbutin 2% + HA
The great thing about this product is it’s super open about what it contains – and it contains two great ingredients for your skin. It’s a concentrated serum with purified arbutin and hyaluronic acid, which helps fight dark spots while keeping skin hydrated. It’s got a lovely gel-like texture which is cool and refreshing and glides over the skin.
- The Inkey List Alpha Arbutin
THE inkey LISTAlpha Arbutin Brightening Serum
This is a great arbutin product if you don’t want to spend a huge amount just to give it a try. This Alpha Arbutin from The Inkey List usually retails around $15, which is a fraction of the price of most of the others on this list. It combines arbutin with hyaluronic acid and squalane to keep your skin hydrated and healthy.
Arbutin is one of the best products to use if your prone to hyperpigmentation from scarring – because it inhibits the formation of the melanin in the first place, using it often will help protect you from further marks in the future! It’s definitely something every generation of the family needs in their bathroom cabinet.
Skin Barrier Skin Savior 🙏🏾
Thank you @cheriefor this amazing gift 🤩🤩 Something thing I am very particular about is my moisturizer. My skin barrier tends need the extra TLC and the best thing to give it is moisture. So when I look for a moisturizer I need something that gives me instant hydration and doesn’t clog my pores. So when I received the : BASE BUTTER - Radiate Face Jelly Aloe Vera Gel Face Moisturizer I was so excited! The Brand : ✨Black Owned ✨Women Owned ✨Cruelty Free ✨Non-Comedogenic ✨Vegan ✨Paraben Free 🔑 Ingredients : ✨Aloe Vera Juice ✨Shea Butter ✨Evening Primrose Oil Okay, as you can see your girl woke up DULL! The only thing I did for this video was wash my face and use this to show y’all the transformation! I was using this EVERY night but last night I used my acne treatment routine and your girl FELT THAT (salicylic acid can be so drying to my combo skin). What’s my favorite part? This baby doesn’t have a smell or heavy greasy feel, so it perfect year round! At $21 this is a DEAL ! (The line I used on my cheek covered the entire bottom portion of my face!) Have you tried this brand?
DISAPPOINTED BY THESE 100% NATURAL PRODUCTS 😩
I was so excited to try these out because I love moisturizers & I am always in search of a good one! These looked & sounded very promising! They’re from a woman owned company, completely natural, vegan, & cruelty free! However, I was quite disappointed. EARTH HARBOR - MERMAID MILK Nutrient Glow Moisturizer This moisturizer claims to give you a glow right away & it contains spirulina + matcha. I was excited about the matcha because it has so many amazing benefits for skin. It has a very whipped consistency which I like. However it always contains essential oils that were strong, although not toooo strong for my liking. But I’m really just not a fan of essential oils in my face creams. The moisturizer did make my skin appear a little brighter but the cream just sat on my face. All day long I could touch my face & still feel the cream sitting there! I hate that feeling! It also almost gave me a greasy appearance after a while? Not a fan. EARTH HARBOR - SIREN SILK Multi-Tasking Hydration Creme This one was absolutely awful. If I could give it 0 stars I would. It says to use it at night time & the apply it at least 5 minutes before bed so it can absorb on your face & not your pillow. It contains Sea Retinol + other Superherbs which normally make me love a product! But that just wasn’t enough here. First, when I put it on my face my eyes started to actually burn & I felt suffocated from the scent. It was THAT strong. Guys, I’m not being dramatic at all. The smell like attacked me it was crazy! I have never had something like that happen with a face cream! I couldn’t believe how strong the fragrance was. & to top it off, it wasn’t even a pretty smell. My husband described it as smelling like floor cleaner. But I powered through. The longer I had it on, the more “used” to the smell I got. So, I wore it overnight. But then I woke up even more upset with it! I had pilling all over my face. It almost looked like my face was peeling but it wasn’t, it was jus the cream. One thing I cannot stand about a moisturizer is pulling. That’s enough for me to throw it out! It also didn’t really even moisturize my face that well! All in all, I hated this experience. But if you want, you should try them out for yourself, don’t let my experience deter you from trying something new! I however, will be sticking with my Youth To The People Dream Mask & Superfood Whipped Moisturizer! Love those two!! A Journey of Self 🌹
I figured Black History Month was as good as any opportunity to talk about my self finding. Growing up in a small yet old family, I always had questions about my roots and family history. I also struggled with self conscious doubts about my appearance. Why is my nose this big? Why is my hair this curly? Why am I taller than average? These weighed heavy on my mind growing up because honestly, sticking out sucked. So, I finally dove deep into my family’s origin and decided to do an Ancestry DNA analysis. I immersed myself with every corner of the site. I only got the chance to finish my maternal grandmas side of the family tree, but even that has plenty of gaps. Yet, when I received my DNA results I was stoked. Then I realized, I don’t know much about any of these places. So I dug even deeper. I have a little journal of things I’ve learned and want to know, but this was quite the experience. It was heartbreaking and satisfying at the same time. I highly recommend for every race and background to do this DNA Test. The best part of this was scrolling through photos of the people of the respected countries I was DNA matched to. I swear I saw a girl who looked like me, but everyone else thinks I’m tripping lol. In the end, I’m satisfied with my results and findings. Relatively speaking, this way of self discovery has been the most effective.
Black Owned Makeup Look
So I decided to use the products I pictured in my first photo (minus my highlight shade and lipstick) I used the #Ace Beaute - Nostalgia Palette[products]#[FiveStars] for my entire eye look. I definitely enjoyed these products. My only advice is to shake the UOMA BEAUTY - Say What?! Foundation before use (because it can come out watery) but the coverage is absolutely flawless. I was shocked with the consistency the coverage I got. What’s your favorite black owned brands? (I do not own right to the song)

My Mental Wellness Improved Through My Self AcceptanceWhen I was around 13 or 14 years old, I remember routinely taking one of my older sister’s black eyeliner pencils before school every morning. I’d arrive early so that I could slip away to the girl’s bathroom to apply a single black line to my eyelids. My parents didn’t allow me to wear any makeup at the time. Although this smudgy line on my eyelids didn’t make me look all that much different, I never felt comfortable at school without it. My teenage mind convinced myself that I needed some sort of cosmetic symbol in order to appropriately express my femininity. Up until that point in my life, society had told girls that looked like me - tall, Black, and with kinky hair - that we somehow weren’t as beautiful as the other girls. For far too long, I believed it too.Feb. 17
