Sunscreens That Don’t Destroy Coral Reefs:5 Best Reef-Safe Sunscreens
We all know we need to wear sunscreen. When we’re kids, we often only do it because a parent tells us to, but as we grow up we know it’s imperative for protecting our skin from UV rays which can cause early signs of aging, burns, and cancer.
Today, however, we also have increased awareness about the consequences of the skincare choices we make, from products that have been tested on animals to cheap creams that wash off into the ocean and into the lungs of fish. With every purchase we make, we also have to take into account the damage that can be done, or, indeed, prevented, as a result of our purchase.
Thankfully, we have the internet on our side, and we can research and make informed, sensible choices when it comes to the sun creams we purchase.
Why is sunscreen bad for the ocean?
Two of the most common ingredients found in sunscreens are oxybenzone and octinoxate. One 2015 study from the Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology found that oxybenzone poses a threat to coral reef conservation. What’s more, it is also expected to threaten the resiliency of coral reefs to future climate change.
Most products that contain SPF (primers, moisturizers, and foundations) also contain oxybenzone, which has been directly linked to coral bleaching, the biggest cause of coral death in the world. Surely that sounds like something we want to avoid being a part of?
Which sunscreens are reef-safe?
Generally, any sunscreens that do not contain oxybenzone are reef safe, but some companies go one step further and print “Reef-Safe,” “Micronized” or “Non-Nano” on their bottles.
This indicates that the particles in the sunscreen are not small enough to be harmful to marine life, and thus are reef-safe.
Want to do your bit for the ocean and be protected against the sun’s rays? You need reef-safe sunscreen. Here are 5 of the best sunscreens that don’t destroy coral reefs.
5 Reef-Safe Sunscreens
- Coola’s Mineral Face Organic Matte Finish Sunscreen
The name is a mouthful, but it’s worth it! As far as credentials go, Coola ticks a lot of boxes for a lot of people. Their products aren’t tested on animals, almost all are vegan, their products are free of parabens and GMOs, and all are 70% certified organic.
This high-end sunblock offers lightweight coverage, featuring Coola’s antioxidant-rich complex of natural rosehip oil and evening primrose. It helps fight free radicals, it’s great for sensitive skin, and it doubles as the perfect makeup primer!
- Alba Botanica’s Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen
alba BOTANICA Mineral Sunscreen, Sensitive, Fragrance Free, SPF 30
This water-resistant sun cream is more on the affordable side, costing around $8 for a 113g bottle. As you’d expect, it’s reef safe, vegan, and paraben-free. It’s also gluten-free and fragrance-free. It’s great for those of us with sensitive skin that typically reacts to sunscreens with a fragrance.
- Blue Lizard’s Sensitive Sunscreen Lotion
BLUE LIZARD AUSTRALIAN SUNSCREENSensitive Mineral Sunscreen 30+
This popular Australian company makes paraben- and fragrance-free sunscreen, but this one is particularly interesting as the bottle turns blue when exposed to harmful UV rays. That’s certainly one way of reminding you to top up your sunscreen! Blue Lizard sunscreen is not tested on animals either, so that’s another box ticked.
- Badger’s Clear Zinc Sport Sunscreen
This family-run company has produced an unscented sunscreen that seems to be pretty much perfect in every way. It’s not tested on animals, non-GMO, reef-safe, and contains just five ingredients – three of which are organic. It’s hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic, and even the bottle is made with recycled materials. As with many sunscreen brands, the only thing preventing it from being fully vegan is the presence of organic beeswax.
- Supergoop’s PLAY Everyday Lotion
This striking little bottle of lotion has been enriched with rosemary, sunflower, and rice antioxidants for powerful moisture and protection. It defends the skin against UVA and UVB damage, protecting from dehydration and photoaging. It’s free of fragrances and parabens, coral reef safe and it is not tested on animals.
While it may seem tricky to find a high-quality sunscreen that aligns with everything you want, it’s definitely possible! These days, there are so many choices for every skincare product you could imagine – all it takes is a little research to ensure your money is going to the right people. If you have the opportunity, there is no reason not to choose a great sunblock that can offer safe and reliable protection to us and our fishy friends.

The Art of Cleansing - need to know skin tips⬇️
A Ph balanced cleanser is key for healthy skin! Why is the Ph of your cleanser important? First of all, you need to understand your skin. The skin is the largest organ of the body which we often forget and on the skin's surface, there is a fine and a slightly acidic film known as the acid mantle. The acid mantle is formed through the combination of epidermal lipids, sebum, water, urea and amino acids, giving the skin an acidic environment and a Ph of 4.6-6. The acid mantle acts as a barrier to protect the skin from harmful bacteria and viruses. The acid mantle also retains water in the skin, which supports hydration levels, prevent Transepidermal Water loss (TEWL) and gives us the dewy glow we all crave. ✨ The health of the skin is relying on a well functioning acid mantle and barrier. For optimum skin health, the acid mantle needs to stay between a Ph level 4.6-6, and your cleanser ideally should match it. Unfortunately, many cleansers are at ph levels 9-10 (more alkaline). Higher ph cleansers are still removing dirt and cleaning the skin, but they're also compromising the acid mantle's Ph, therefore, making the skin susceptible to bacteria, resulting in acne, irritation, eczema, inflammation, and dehydration. The acid mantle can recover, but it's not in the skin's best interest to use high Ph (alkaline cleansers) I recommend avoiding cleansers containing Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS). SLS is a detergent and responsible for the lather and foam a cleanser produces and leaves the skin feeling squeaky clean. (Your skin should never feel squeaky clean.) SLS commonly found in cleansers, body washes, and shampoos. SLS, causes a cleanser to become overly alkaline, resulting in an unbalanced acid mantle and depletes the skin of its natural oils leading to irritated and inflamed skin. The skin starts to overproduce oil to compensate for what SLS has stripped away, which explains why the skin goes into a cycle of oily to dry because the acid mantle is repeatedly being compromised and in a state of imbalance, resulting in persistent skin issues. ✨Thankfully the skin is smart and will recover when given the right tools.✨ ✨Cleansing✨ I recommend cleansing the skin morning and night with a Ph balanced SLS free cleanser and always double cleanse at night as SPF and makeup stick to the skin along with pollution picked up throughout the day, so double cleansing is essential. My go-to for evening cleanser is #Dermaquest - Essential daily cleanser[products]#[FourStars] Dermaquest's Essential daily cleanser alongside my Foreo Luna cleansing tool - deets below.FOREO - LUNA Mini 2 Facial Cleansing Brush Fuchsia 🙅🏻♀️Try not to skip cleansing at night no matter how sleepy you are, sleeping with your makeup on goes far beyond clogged pores. Sleeping with your makeup on in the long term will prematurely age your skin due to the breakdown of collagen from environmental pollutants left on the skin. Keep reading in comments ⬇️

Another beautiful HA serum other than Glowrecipe
Another beautiful Hyaluronic acid serum! I am a fan of Farsali products and this is no exception 😍❤️ MOISTURE REPLENISHING SERUM QUENCH by Farsali ✨💧 fARSÁLI - Quench I found it similar to Glowrecipe one in performance and details while the consistency is a little different. It's a hyaluronic acid serum that helps to replenish moisture in the skin by using a unique complex of low and high molecular weight Hyaluronic Acid. The staggered molecular weights of the Hyaluronic Acid are designed to help promote multi-depth hydration on both the skin's surface and in the epidermis. Enriched with replenishing Provitamin B5, the skin's elasticity appears improved as well as feeling and looking softer. ❤️INGREDIENTS: 💧Low Molecular Weight Hyaluronic Acid is a lightweight, versatile hydrator that attracts and binds 1,000 times its weight in water. Low Molecular Weight Hyaluronic Acid is such a tiny molecule, it's able to penetrate deep into your skin and replenish moisture from within. 💧Hyaluronic Acid High Molecular Weight Hyaluronic Acid, due to the larger molecule size, this Hyaluronic Acid sits on top of the skin, forming an invisible shield that traps moisture. This helps reduce moisture loss from stress, heat, extreme cold and environmental factors. 💧Vitamin B5 Vitamin B5 a naturally moisturizing form of Vitamin B5, otherwise known as Panthenol. This silky vitamin helps replenish skin for a soft and supple appearance. The best part is it's Ingredients list, it's only 7 Ingredients and the formulation is so good that I feel I have been sleeping on this product for this long. It feels so soft and smooth on skin, goes on silky, smooth and doesn't feel heavy. And after few hours skin feels super hydrated and plump. I found this serum to be working the best for dehydrated skin condition. Especially in the colder months. Dehydration leads to broken barrier and dullnes, this targets these issues! It's only 24$ which is a win in my opinion! Their opther products which are my favorite are a bit more expensive than this one! I love it! It goes on perfect under makeup as well!
