🌟 Acne 101: My Favorite OTC Acne Products✨
Sep. 14, 2020
There are so many new skincare ingredients on the market geared towards fighting acne. Don’t get me wrong, I love trying the newest “it” product just as much as the next skincare enthusiast, but sometimes what works best are the tried and true staples.
Most of us have been given prescriptions or recommendations from a dermatologist at some point in our lives. Some of these prescriptions and OTC dermatologist recommendations are really unpleasant and take awhile to get used to despite their efficacy, while others are a little more forgiving.
Here are 2 of my favorite over the counter acne products that I still use in my skincare routine and how to get the most out of them!
Stridex Salicylic Acid Pads
How to Use
I use these pads like a toner, using them at night 2-3 times a week when I’m having an acne flare-up. I let my skin completely dry after washing before using 1 pad for my whole face. Once the product dries I follow up with a good moisturizer.

If you have another acne topical you use, such as a prescription from the dermatologist or a serum, you can use them together, however I recommend using just the pads when first starting out to acclimate your skin and make sure you don’t experience any irritation. Some people can use these once a day, while others with sensitive and dry skin like myself, can only handle it a few times a week.
Tip: these are also great for body acne! I have used these on my back when I get pimples. I especially love them after workouts.
Differin (Adapalene .1%)
DIFFERINDIFFERIN Acne Treatment Gel
Adapalene is a retinoid that has been prescribed as a topical for many years now. It’s often one of the first acne prescriptions dermatologists go to for persistent acne that doesn’t respond to quick fixes like the Stridex pads formerly mentioned.
In recent years it was approved for over the counter use and can be found at drugstores. While it’s a wonderful acne-fighting product, it requires some know-how to get all of its benefits!
How to Use
Adapelene works best with long-term use and often results can take a few weeks to be noticable. It can cause irritation at first and especially if you don’t start out slowly. It may also cause purging. Use it as you would any serum or topical, after your toner and before your moisturizer and always at night!
Tip: Start out using it 2-3x a week and always with a good moisturizer. Once you’ve guaged your skin’s tolerance you can use it on dry skin directly after cleansing, but this isn’t necessary nor is it recommended for sensitive skin and when you’re first starting to use it.
Do It All Toner 🍃🍃
I have been loving the brand Truly lately ✨ I recently purchased this: 🍃TRULY - CBD Jelly Toning Solution 🍃 And it’s by far one of my favorite toners. Ingredients: 💚100MG CBD 💚Glycolic Acid 💚Tea Tree Oil 💚Organic Aloe 💚Rose Petal Extract This brand is also: 💚Vegan 💚Cruelty Free 💚Clean I use this every other night and it as tremendously helped my skin barrier and acne. I was really concerned about the glycolic acid irritating or drying my skin but it didn’t at all 🤩 I highly recommend this to combo and oily , acne prone skin. This will be a toner I keep in my night routine. I got it from Ulta (of course) for $24 (I paid $15 after coupons) Do you use CBD products? 🍃
Self Care: Skin Roller & Sheet Masks
My new year skin-resolution is to use more sheet masks. Sheet masks are the best way to treat yourself to a moment of wellness and to give your skin a boost of hydration along with any treatments. I personally cannot stay still for 10-15 minutes, so my esthetician friends recommended that I use a facial roller with my sheet masks. This will not only keep my hands busy but enhances absorption, drain lymphatic nodes, and sculpt and tone my face. I found this great article from @SkinGym that shows you how to properly use facial rollers: 1. Start by using the larger stone and rolling upward (neck to jawline) 2. Sculpt the Jawline: Roll from chin to ear with upward rolling motion 3. Cheeks: Roll outwards from nose to temple 4. Under eye are: use the smaller stone roll gently outward from inner eye to temple 5. Forehead: use the larger stone roll outward towards the hairline. I repeat each step 2-3 times on each side of the face and repeat until serums in the sheet masks fully sinks into the skin. According to the article to get the best result you should be incorporating rolling into your daily AM and PM routine... but I’m still working on 2-3 times a week. Maybe in a month or so I can work my way up to once daily. Dr. Jart+ - Dermask Water Jet Vital Hydra Solution @cherie gifted this to me and I’ve loving this extra bit soothing hydration. They’re pretty inexpensive, ranging around $6-$9 for 5 masks. They’re formulated with patented aquasil component, hyaluronic acid and seaweed extract to provide intensive hydration. 🚫Dr. Jart+ is not cruelty-free they do test on animals when required and they do sell to mainland China which requires animal testing. #Blush Wellness - Rose Quartz Facial-Roller[products]#[FiveStars] This was gifted to me from Blush Wellness. They’re actually having a sale right now for $10. I usually pop it in the fridge or freezer for a few minutes to get them nice and cold whenever I want to get my “roll-on.”🤪 MICHAEL TODD BEAUTY - Soniclear Elite Antimicrobial Sonic Skin Cleansing System and MICHAEL TODD BEAUTY - Soniclear Replacement Serum Infusion Head I’ve also used the sonic clear serum infusion head and it works wonder as well! I had milia under my eye and this combined with my night routine has cleared it up ! KINSHIP - Self Reflect Probiotic Moisturzing Sunscreen Zinc Oxide SPF 32 This is the ONLY mineral sunscreen I’ve tried that didn’t give me a ghastly white cast. It has a slight tint but it honestly barely noticeable 😭 What in your morning routine ?
Just added to skincare routine
I usually use some of the the tatcha dewy skin collection skincare, I just added this to the routine. Literally tatcha is the only thing that keeps my skin care at this moment. The dewy collection is great for dry skin but it is a bit pricey. The $12 face mask thoooo be hitting. Anybody else use this brand or want to use it?
