The Ultimate Guide to Oily Hair: Causes, Treatment, and Prevention
Aug. 31, 2020
Oily hair has a range of potential causes, from genetics to poor hair habits. Treatment can include natural remedies, specialized shampoos, or better styling practices.
Greasy hair isn’t a serious condition in itself, although it can cause mental and emotional distress. Learn common causes behind greasy hair, and how to prevent it.
We also share DIY treatments, suggest anti-oil shampoos, and tricks to hide oily hair when you’re short on time.
Oily Hair Causes
The cause of greasy hair isn’t always cut-and-dry. There can be one or more factors involved, such as:
Fine, straight hair is usually more likely to get oily than other types. It’s also easier for grease to carry through the hair, making it look more visible.
Seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, and other skin disorders can be a primary or secondary cause of greasy hair.
Hormonal imbalances caused by menopause, pregnancy, or certain health conditions can lead to greasier hair due to excess sebum (oil) production.
Oddly enough, both excessive and insufficient washing can lead to greasy hair.
Not shampooing enough can lead to a buildup of dandruff and dead skin cells, worsening oil.
Overwashing with harsh shampoos can strip your tresses of essential protective oils, ramping up oil production.
Frequently touching and styling your hair can lead to unwanted oil distribution.
Examples include brushing your hair too often or regular elaborate styling between washes.
Heavy serums, conditioners, and gels can significantly worsen oily hair. Such products can buildup and make your hair look greasier than it is, and trap oil too.
Highly humid climates can make grease look worse than it is. Plus, if you’re sweating all the time it can accumulate on your scalp and contribute to oil.
DIY Remedies for Oily Hair
You’ll find numerous DIY shampoos, conditioners, and rinses for oily hair online.
However, take anecdotal claims of success with a grain of salt. Bear in mind that some ingredients such as vinegar and tea tree oil can be irritating in high quantities.
- Botanical oils: Tea tree oil, aloe vera, and other plant extracts are popular home remedies to cut down on oil.
- Lemon juice: As an astringent, lemon juice might help remove shine-provoking buildup from your hair.
- Apple cider vinegar: Acidic apple cider vinegar is a popular cleaning agent as it breaks down grease.
- Tea rinse: Using black tea or green tea, which is rich in antioxidants, may help to improve oil buildup.
- Baking soda: Baking soda could work to dry out an oily scalp, although you should avoid using too much.
Shampoos for Oily Hair
It’s worth investing in a shampoo specifically for greasy hair. Here are a couple to inspire you:
How to Hide Oily Hair
Understandably, you might find yourself in a situation where washing your hair isn’t possible. Here are a few simple techniques to minimize the appearance of oil:
Dry shampoo is a popular quick fix—these products come as either sprays or powder to absorb excess oil.
Consider Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo, which combats oil buildup and works to add volume.
In a pinch, you can create your own DIY dry shampoo using baby powder. Don't dry out your scalp by using too much.
Oil Blotting Sheets
The type of oil blotting sheets you use for your face can work on your hair, although they might be less effective.
Dab your tresses at the roots to limit unwanted shine. Opt for larger sheets, such as Natural Green Tea Oil Absorbing Tissues.
Style Your Hair
Slicking your hair back in a bun or using hair gel is a simple technique to conceal grease.
How to Prevent Oily Hair
Luckily, there are a few strategies at your disposal to improve oily hair.
Find Your Wash Frequency
Experiment with the ideal washing frequency for you. For instance, twice-weekly washes instead of once-weekly, or every other day versus daily.
Use the Right Products
Pick shampoos and products formulated to combat oily hair. Steer clear of greasy, heavy solutions.
Avoid Excessive Styling
Try to limit brushing, straightening, and frequent style changes as much as you can.
Change Pillowcases or Protective Sleepwear Often
Switch out pillowcases at least once a week. If you wear a cap or scarf while you sleep, don’t let it get too dirty.
If you’re prone to oily hair because of genetics or your hair type, it can be difficult to get rid of it entirely. Still, tactics like changing your hair products and avoiding over-styling can help improve it dramatically. It’s also important to find the right washing frequency for your scalp.
At Home Exfoliating Facial ✨✨
So I recently received the Mimi Co Exfoliating Wand via IG PR. I couldn’t wait to do a full facial and I decided to do it tonight. Order: I purchased a steamer from Amazon for $23 and I’m obsessed with it (DM me for product info). I started with UpCircle - Cleansing Face Balm With Apricot Powder As my oil cleanse to get my sunscreen from today off and any other oils and dirts. INDIE LEE - Purifying Face Wash This cleanser is perfect for getting dirts and oils from skin as well. It’s not drying and it’s totally worth it! I paired it with a face cleansing scrub brush, I also purchased from Amazon. I love it and I paid around $20 for it as well! It doubles the vibration frequency put out by Foreo. CLARISMA - Namaste Glow Energizing Face Mask This was the mask I chose for the enzyme properties. This breaks down dirts and oils in pores and dead skin cells. I also steamed my face during this time. Follain - Toning Mist: Balance + Prime This was what I sprayed over my face for the prep for my exfoliating wand. I didn’t have a true medium and I am out of Aloe Vera plants so😭 I then exfoliated with my wand starting at my cheeks and working upward and then to my forehead. I went down and to the sides of my nose. Glow slow! innisfree - Jeju Lava Seawater Lotion I used the toner to cleanse my skin and get any dirts left over from me exfoliating. SUMMER FRIDAYS - Jet Lag Mask I use this as my hydrating mask. I took the back of my Mimi Co Wand on switched to the Moisturizing Setting. I gently slid upwards my entire face for the last 2 mins only and then wiped the mask off with a damp cloth. earthtoskin - Tea Time Anti Aging Eye Cream This is the most hydrating eye cream I own. I used this with the back of my cleansing brush on the heat setting! Yes it made my eye feel so hydrated and relaxed. fresh - Lotus Anti-Aging Night Moisturizer This was the final step as a good moisturizer seals in everything! To prevent acne I use the SUNDAY RILEY - U.F.O. Ultra-Clarifying Face Oil as my last step. I didn’t use an astringent type toner, so I wanted to still treat my skin💚
HOLY GRAIL SPF 🌞🌞🌞
Okay guys as I have said before I am guilty of rarely ever wearing sunscreen. I just never liked the feel of it on my skin. I always felt like it made me greasy & clogged my pores. However, once I heard about this product I was very intrigued. NIOD - Survival 30 It actually isn’t sold in the United States for some reason so I had to purchase it on a UK website. (Beauty Bay) It is an antioxidant serum with SPF 30. At first, it appears to be tinted but it’s actually not. On NIOD’s website they state: “The slight tinted appearance is derived from the active technologies including Lutein, Fractionated Melanin and Pycnogenol.” It blends in with your skin so easily & does not leave a white cast like some other SPF products. However this serum literally makes my skin tone soo even & perfect! It also contains silicone so it completely smooths over my pores. AND besides all that great stuff, it’s a mineral sunscreen! So it protects against environmental & lifestyle issues. Like UV rays, blue light, etc. I have never loved a product as much as this one! I literally cannot believe how good my skin looks while using this stuff! For a 30ml bottle, I paid $33 on the Beauty Bay site. For me, that is completely worth it! It comes in this adorable packaging & pretty glass bottle. It also has a pump dispenser & squirts out the perfect amount for a single use! I really can’t recommend this stuff enough guys! It’s wonderful!! @cherie@Cheriebeauty@CheriePick
DISAPPOINTED BY THESE 100% NATURAL PRODUCTS 😩
I was so excited to try these out because I love moisturizers & I am always in search of a good one! These looked & sounded very promising! They’re from a woman owned company, completely natural, vegan, & cruelty free! However, I was quite disappointed. EARTH HARBOR - MERMAID MILK Nutrient Glow Moisturizer This moisturizer claims to give you a glow right away & it contains spirulina + matcha. I was excited about the matcha because it has so many amazing benefits for skin. It has a very whipped consistency which I like. However it always contains essential oils that were strong, although not toooo strong for my liking. But I’m really just not a fan of essential oils in my face creams. The moisturizer did make my skin appear a little brighter but the cream just sat on my face. All day long I could touch my face & still feel the cream sitting there! I hate that feeling! It also almost gave me a greasy appearance after a while? Not a fan. EARTH HARBOR - SIREN SILK Multi-Tasking Hydration Creme This one was absolutely awful. If I could give it 0 stars I would. It says to use it at night time & the apply it at least 5 minutes before bed so it can absorb on your face & not your pillow. It contains Sea Retinol + other Superherbs which normally make me love a product! But that just wasn’t enough here. First, when I put it on my face my eyes started to actually burn & I felt suffocated from the scent. It was THAT strong. Guys, I’m not being dramatic at all. The smell like attacked me it was crazy! I have never had something like that happen with a face cream! I couldn’t believe how strong the fragrance was. & to top it off, it wasn’t even a pretty smell. My husband described it as smelling like floor cleaner. But I powered through. The longer I had it on, the more “used” to the smell I got. So, I wore it overnight. But then I woke up even more upset with it! I had pilling all over my face. It almost looked like my face was peeling but it wasn’t, it was jus the cream. One thing I cannot stand about a moisturizer is pulling. That’s enough for me to throw it out! It also didn’t really even moisturize my face that well! All in all, I hated this experience. But if you want, you should try them out for yourself, don’t let my experience deter you from trying something new! I however, will be sticking with my Youth To The People Dream Mask & Superfood Whipped Moisturizer! Love those two!! YOUTH TO THE PEOPLE - Superberry Hydrate + Glow Dream Mask YOUTH TO THE PEOPLE - Superfood Air-Whip Moisture Cream 💗💗💗 @cherie@Cheriebeauty@CheriePick
Wednesday Wellness 🙏🏾
This past week has been rather hard and long for me. I ultimately decided to get back on track with my wellness plan. My main wellness goal for 2021, is to indulge in myself more. I definitely am a firm believe in “as within, so without”. I started my day with: #Four Sigmatic - Mushroom Elixir Mix with Chaga[products]#[FiveStars] I have been getting back into adaptogen and herbal medicine. What we put into our bodies is just as important as what goes on the outside. Adaptogens are apart of ancient medicinal traditions traced all over the world. I also drink Tulsi “Holy Basil” Tea. If you need a pick me up or emotional boost I highly recommend! SUNDAY RILEY - U.F.O. Ultra-Clarifying Face Oil is my treatment of choice I used during the day. Do not be afraid to use salicylic acid during the day. I applied plenty of sunscreen afterwards as well! This is a GODSEND for clearing up acne and acne scarring. It’s by far the best acne treatment I’ve tried and its mostly due to the immediate results I get. This is a dry oil, so it should be used before a heavy moisturizer or sunscreen. THE BODY SHOP - Spa of the World Thai Makrut Lime Firming Oil is a staple in my night time routine. When I want to relax and really unwind I use a body roller with this oil. It smells like a fresh key lime pie and it’s so hydrating. This is great for firming, especially when paired with a body tool. What do you do for wellness?
Double Your Lash Length With Sky High Mascara!
I bought this mascara after seeing a post about it on Facebook. I love trying out new mascaras but rarely do I find one that I will use regularly like my beloved tarte - Maneater Mascara However this stuff is good. MAYBELLINE - Lash Sensational Sky High Waterproof Mascara It gave my lashes so much volume & length they literally doubled in size! My lashes are already pretty long to begin with but this made them look amazing. The photo is after applying only one coat so I can only imagine how good they will look after two or three coats! It also didn’t clump up my lashes at all. I applied it really quickly & lazily too because I was in a rush to get ready & I was still amazed! I honestly think this is going to be my new daily mascara. It is waterproof but not the annoying kind that leaves your eyes completely black when you go to take it off. It came off really easily with my POND'S - Facial Moisturizers Dry Skin Cream which is what I’ve always used to remove my eye makeup, since I was a kid! @cherie@Cheriebeauty@CheriePick
