How to Prevent Sun Spots From Forming?

Do you struggle with sunspots? Many of us have struggled with sunspots at some point of our life. Even though Vitamin D is good for your skin and health, too much of it can be a bad thing. Hyperpigmentation due to sun damage is inevitable. Although wearing a good sunscreen helps prevent sun damage, nothing is guaranteed 100%. Not to mention, many of us did not understand the importance of sunscreen and the fact you should apply it during your early years. As a result, sunspots crept up later in our adult years.
 The greatest skin sin–not applying sunscreen daily. What is the point of treating your scars and hyper-pigmentation issues, if you’re not protecting your skin everyday from UV rays? 
Trust me, I never wore sunscreen before aesthetics school, and as a result I started to notice sun spots surfacing in my mid twenties. You must apply SPF even if it is cloudy or indoors because UV rays can travel through windows.
 Today I am going to discuss the best ways to help prevent sun spots from forming.
 SUNSCREEN
You should apply sunscreen every two hours when you are going to be in the sun for hours at a time to protect against UV rays. Mayoclinic.org says, " UVA rays can prematurely age your skin, causing wrinkling and age spots. UVB rays can burn your skin." Some products such as moisturizer or foundation contain sunscreen, however, they are not potent enough as using sunscreen. That doesn't mean you shouldn't use these products, it just means you need to apply sunscreen over to get full protection benefits.
 APPLY RETINOL
 If I had to choose one ingredient that I couldn't live without, it would be retinol. "Retinol smooths fine lines, fills in wrinkles, softens bumps and rough patches, brightens skin, fades scars and dark marks, and drastically reduces acne." (Marie Claire). Vitamin A or retinol helps promotie youthful and glowing skin overall.  Applying retinol at least 2-3x a week can help shed dead skin cells to reveal brighter looking skin.
 APPLY A BRIGHTENING SERUM
 Apply serums with antioxidants such as vitamin C or niacinamide. "Antioxidants neutralize those free radicals to protect your skin from damage." (Marieclaire.com). There are many natural ingredients that work as a healthier alternative to hydroquinone such as kojic acid, licorice root, and vitamin C. Vitamin C is my favorite skin lightening ingredient. It also helps prevent dark spots, fine lines and wrinkles.

 EXFOLIATE 2-3X PER WEEK
 Exfoliation is one of the most important skin care tips. It helps shed dead skin cells and is a great way to prep your skin for face products. Like I mentioned in a previous article, did you know that as we age, the rate at which our skin cells shed is lower? This means exfoliation is crucial at least 2-3x times a week to help brighten those annoying dark spots. 
WEAR A HAT AND/OR SUNGLASSES TO PROTECT 
Besides the obvious fact that you should wear sunscreen, it’s also important to make sure you are protecting all parts of your face and body from UV rays. One way to help minimize sunspots is to wear sunglasses and a hat when you are going to be outside. Sun damage can occur around the eyes as well as well as the neck and chest. Be sure to apply sunscreen on any exposed areas to the sun.
 AVOID SUN DURING PEAK HOURS
Did you know UVA and UVB rays are strongest between the hours of 10 AM-3 PM? If you have to be in the sun during these hours, "Choose sunscreen labeled broad spectrum meaning that it protects against two types of harmful rays: UVA and UVB." (Cancercare.org). Prevention is always important when it comes to skinare!

 CONSUME ANTIOXIDANT RICH FOODS
According to marieclaire.com, “Antioxidants neutralize free radicals to protect your skin from damage.” Foods rich in antioxidants include fish, spinach, berries, and green tea. When you eat healthy, the result is glowing and brighter skin. Antioxidants include vitamins A, C, E and green tea.

Marula oil is extracted from the marula tree nut found in Africa. Benefits of marula oil: ✔️Rich in antioxidants- which help fight off free radicals from pollution and UV exposure. ✔️Anti-aging – the antioxidants also help with its anti-aging properties to help keep the skin looking youthful. ✔️Rich in fatty acids- (oleic and linoleic fatty acids) that soften and moisturize the skin. ✔️Lightweight - What’s great about marula oil is that it hydrates the skin and absorbs well without being too heavy or greasy. ✔️Immediate glow- I definitely notice my skin is radiating after I wear this oil. I love to use this instead of a moisturizer as a last step in my nighttime skincare routine, especially during the winter months! DRUNK ELEPHANT - Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil Drunk elephant - $72. yes the packaging is beautiful, but that price point is way too high. It only has one ingredient: marula oil. Why is it so expensive? It is likely due to the processing. It is cold pressed with a patented process of unheated extraction. It is unclear if this process is necessary to maintain all of the benefits of marula oil. The Ordinary - 100% Cold Pressed Virgin Marula Oil Ordinary- $8. Also 100% cold pressed marula oil. The processing may be slightly different. The application is a little less light weight, and for this reason slower to absorb, but still blends easily into the skin and gives an immediate glow. Final thoughts: after trying both, I would choose the ordinary product because they are both so similar! What would you choose?
