The How To Guide to Stop Biting Your Nails!
Aug. 5, 2020
If you are guilty of biting your nails you are not alone. In fact, up to 30% of the population nibble at their nails on the daily! But what is so tempting about biting down on those nails with your gnashers?
Research has shown that many people choose to bite their nails as a way of dealing with stressful situations. Nail biting can actually cause a soothing effect as neurotransmitters are released in your brain when you bite down and this sense of relief can become addictive.
But even though it feels good at the time this is not a good enough reason to continue with this destructive habit! While nail biting will never cause tremendous damage, it does have its downsides!
Firstly, by biting your nails regularly you can damage the tissue around your nails meaning they can start growing in strange ways – leaving you with abnormal looking nails that not even the prettiest nail polish colour could fix!
Biting your nails can also damage the appearance of your teeth. In fact, biting down can start to cause small chips and dents on the upper and lower front teeth. In the worst-case scenario, biting down on your nails can cause issues for your gums and roots of your teeth such as infections and tooth rot.
Finally, biting your nails can be extremely unhealthy for you! If you think about it, your fingers are exposed to millions of germs and bacteria each and every day and plenty of these find home under your nail. When you bite your nails, you are transferring all these germs and bacteria to your mouth and into your body. It’s no surprise that this can make you very unwell!
So how can you stop this harmful habit? The good news is we have plenty of solutions you can pick and choose from!
Put a bad taste on your nails
The first solution is by far the most popular! Have a go coating your nails with an unpleasant taste. This could be a particularly potent nail polish or a food condiment such as mustard. If you don’t want to walk around in public with sauce on your nails, have a go mixing these sauces in with your nail polishes so they will have the same unpleasant taste when you bite down but it will not be obvious what you are doing to any outsiders!
File down your nails
Filing your nails down is the perfect solution because when you go to bite your nail there will be nothing there to bite! Plus, nail files are extremely small objects that you can easily carry around with you in handbags or pockets. Plus, as you become better and better at filing your nails, you’ll become more and more proud of the appearance of your nails and you won’t want to bite down and ruin those beautiful nails!
Manicure your nails
On the same track, if you start taking pride in your nails and regularly get them manicured, they will become an investment you don’t want to ruin with nail biting! What’s more, you won’t want the shame of bringing your bitten down nails to your manicurist – unless you want a telling off!
If a manicurist is a bit out of your price range, why not pick up a set of press on nails from your regular supermarket and apply them. Then you can enjoy your press on nails knowing full well that underneath the press on your natural nail is growing nice and strong!
Make a nail-biting diary
A nail-biting diary can be extremely therapeutic and help you isolate the root cause of your nail-biting impulses. If you take note of what situations you are in and what emotions you are feeling when you get tempted to bite down on your nails you can pinpoint the psychological triggers behind your habit. For example, you might find that you bite your nails when you feel tired or when you get in conflict with somebody else. Then you can find other ways to deal with that stress. Such as reaching for a coffee when you feel tired or grabbing a stress ball when you are in conflict with somebody.
Remember, you can always enlist the help of others. Tell your closest loved ones that you are trying to stop biting your nails and ask them to alert you and call you out when you start biting your nails! If you are still struggling then therapy with a professional is also an option.
At Home Exfoliating Facial ✨✨
So I recently received the Mimi Co Exfoliating Wand via IG PR. I couldn’t wait to do a full facial and I decided to do it tonight. Order: I purchased a steamer from Amazon for $23 and I’m obsessed with it (DM me for product info). I started with UpCircle - Cleansing Face Balm With Apricot Powder As my oil cleanse to get my sunscreen from today off and any other oils and dirts. INDIE LEE - Purifying Face Wash This cleanser is perfect for getting dirts and oils from skin as well. It’s not drying and it’s totally worth it! I paired it with a face cleansing scrub brush, I also purchased from Amazon. I love it and I paid around $20 for it as well! It doubles the vibration frequency put out by Foreo. CLARISMA - Namaste Glow Energizing Face Mask This was the mask I chose for the enzyme properties. This breaks down dirts and oils in pores and dead skin cells. I also steamed my face during this time. Follain - Toning Mist: Balance + Prime This was what I sprayed over my face for the prep for my exfoliating wand. I didn’t have a true medium and I am out of Aloe Vera plants so😭 I then exfoliated with my wand starting at my cheeks and working upward and then to my forehead. I went down and to the sides of my nose. Glow slow! innisfree - Jeju Lava Seawater Lotion I used the toner to cleanse my skin and get any dirts left over from me exfoliating. SUMMER FRIDAYS - Jet Lag Mask I use this as my hydrating mask. I took the back of my Mimi Co Wand on switched to the Moisturizing Setting. I gently slid upwards my entire face for the last 2 mins only and then wiped the mask off with a damp cloth. earthtoskin - Tea Time Anti Aging Eye Cream This is the most hydrating eye cream I own. I used this with the back of my cleansing brush on the heat setting! Yes it made my eye feel so hydrated and relaxed. fresh - Lotus Anti-Aging Night Moisturizer This was the final step as a good moisturizer seals in everything! To prevent acne I use the SUNDAY RILEY - U.F.O. Ultra-Clarifying Face Oil as my last step. I didn’t use an astringent type toner, so I wanted to still treat my skin💚
My Farewell To Cherie
Follow me on Ig for more skincare since Cherie is leaving 😭 @naturedskinv This has been an amazing journey and I’ve made soo many amazing friends. Thank you for all the love, conversations, and just overall happiness I’ve experienced on this app. I’m definitely sad, a little upset, and a dash of confused, but thank you @cheriefor giving me such an amazing confidence boost and guidance. The way the app shaped my thoughts on skincare has been insane. I’m still willing to forget this and call it a joke if y’all are! 😭 Anyways thank you again and hopefully we can stay in touch 🙏🏾
Clear skin the gentle way?
Thank you @cheriefor this amazing gift 🤩 “buh-koo-chee-all” HERBIVORE - Bakuchiol Anti-Aging Serum I’ve already become a diehard Herbivore lover. So to receive this beauty was super exciting. When I started my acne journey on Cherie I was (and still am) a Differin Acne Gel stan. This was my choice of retinol and I wanted it strong to treat acne and boost my cellular turnover. Now that my acne is currently under control and it’s getting hot again, I definitely want something smooth and gentle. Bakuchiol is a gentler alternative to the very popular ingredient retinol. So essentially you’ll get overall youthful results for your skin. I haven’t tested this on my acne theory yet, but overall my face has been smooth and irritation free. This serum does not have a smell which I love for products of this caliber. I also love that it’s light and not drying at all. I use this at night and since i have a tolerance to retinol I use it every night. I haven’t been using it long enough to see results (about 12 weeks) but I definitely can’t wait to finish this. Have you tried Bakuchiol?

A Journey of Self 🌹
I figured Black History Month was as good as any opportunity to talk about my self finding. Growing up in a small yet old family, I always had questions about my roots and family history. I also struggled with self conscious doubts about my appearance. Why is my nose this big? Why is my hair this curly? Why am I taller than average? These weighed heavy on my mind growing up because honestly, sticking out sucked. So, I finally dove deep into my family’s origin and decided to do an Ancestry DNA analysis. I immersed myself with every corner of the site. I only got the chance to finish my maternal grandmas side of the family tree, but even that has plenty of gaps. Yet, when I received my DNA results I was stoked. Then I realized, I don’t know much about any of these places. So I dug even deeper. I have a little journal of things I’ve learned and want to know, but this was quite the experience. It was heartbreaking and satisfying at the same time. I highly recommend for every race and background to do this DNA Test. The best part of this was scrolling through photos of the people of the respected countries I was DNA matched to. I swear I saw a girl who looked like me, but everyone else thinks I’m tripping lol. In the end, I’m satisfied with my results and findings. Relatively speaking, this way of self discovery has been the most effective.

My Mental Wellness Improved Through My Self AcceptanceWhen I was around 13 or 14 years old, I remember routinely taking one of my older sister’s black eyeliner pencils before school every morning. I’d arrive early so that I could slip away to the girl’s bathroom to apply a single black line to my eyelids. My parents didn’t allow me to wear any makeup at the time. Although this smudgy line on my eyelids didn’t make me look all that much different, I never felt comfortable at school without it. My teenage mind convinced myself that I needed some sort of cosmetic symbol in order to appropriately express my femininity. Up until that point in my life, society had told girls that looked like me - tall, Black, and with kinky hair - that we somehow weren’t as beautiful as the other girls. For far too long, I believed it too.Feb. 17
