Cherie is an online community of beauty lovers sharing their stories; whether that's their favorite products, makeup tutorials, or skincare routines. Download the app today to be a part of #BeautyWithoutBarriers and show the world what beauty means to you! When I think about summer beauty, I think of someone being sunkissed and carefree. I think of light colors that emulate summer favorites; like watermelon, lilacs, and sunsets. With summer 2020 being nothing like any of the summers of our past, I wanted to share how summer beauty has always been about being bright and creative, through the words, and lens, of makeup.com and skincare.com's art director, Melissa Landestoy. Read on as she shares a bit about her life, and how she plans to emulate summer beauty despite being indoors. Tell us a little about what your work in beauty is like!"Currently, I’m the art director at makeup.com and skincare.com where I get to oversee the casting, photography, design, and branding for both sites. One day, I’m designing a wireframe for new functionality on our site and another day, I’m on set directing photography, collaborating with hair and makeup artists and pitching in to help steam clothes. No two days are the same! A day in the life these days looks so different from a couple months back, too. Lately, I’ve also been testing my own photography skills by shooting beauty content in my home—never NOT creating! On and off the clock, I’d consider myself and my work very colorful. I care deeply about every form of art that I touch—be it a moodboard I’m putting together for a client or the lipstick I choose to wear for the day. I see a form of art in everything that I do."What are some of your guiding beauty principles?"I start each day with the idea that I have to take care of myself in order to take care of others. I’ve learned so much about myself and my beauty routine over the years. I feel my best when I’m 'put together' and I alone define what that means on a daily basis. Sometimes, it’s putting on neon blue winged liner and sometimes it’s slicking my hair back in a high ponytail after having finished my skincare routine. I give myself permission to change it up and change it often! In that same breath, I’m extremely practical and live for balance. You will NEVER find me with a full face of makeup and contoured cheekbones at a 9am Zoom call. It’s just not happening!"What does beauty mean to you?"To me, beauty is defined by any one person’s collective experience and therefore, subjective. Beauty is inclusive and empowering, both overwhelming and just enough, it’s the reflection that we see within ourselves and in others. I believe there is tenderness and beauty in the untold stories, the ones we’ve yet to uncover. Beauty to me is two people watching the same sunset and having parallel experiences–having never met, not knowing of one another, but somehow connected at the same time."What's your aesthetic for this shelter-in-place summer?"Pastels and neons. Sipping Cafe Bustelo iced coffee and vintage fashion magazines spread out on the floor. Pink sunsets and my “Are and Be” Spotify playlist playing loudly in the background. A square neck bodysuit and my lilac Champion sweatpants. Hour-long FaceTime chats with your best friend and mascara running down your face. Spending hours mixing paint and stocking up on color palettes for future makeup looks. As a textbook, gotta-do-it-all Capricorn, it’s been hard to really, REALLY slow down. Shelter-in-place has been a major moment of growth for my solitude, my marriage, and for finding new ways to stay connected while social distancing. I allow myself to cry often, take it easy, and push myself to find happiness in the little things again."What are some of your makeup must-haves this summer?"YSL Water Stain Lip Stains are the new, new loves in my life. Equal parts pigmented stain and lucious oils… UGH, I STAN SO HARD! I also have been giving my face the breathing room it deserves while indoors. On the weekends, I’ve been reaching for the Kosas Tinted Face Oil (for the daytime) and Pat Mcgrath’s Skin Fetish Foundation for when I need a lil’ luxe coverage. ;)"Share your fave summer look and what inspired you!"If you follow me on IG (@lolmel), you know I’m a little color-crazed with my makeup looks. Color theory is kinda my thing and I’m instantly inspired to do a new makeup look if it means I get to try new makeup color combinations. I’m so into graphic liner this season because it’s turned into another form of art for me. IG makeup artists (like @rowisingh, @pradaolic, and @jonetwmakeup) keep me on my toes and inspired with their colorful makeup looks, too! I recently did a rainbow dotted liner look and I was so impressed by my ever-evolving makeup skills that I made it my LinkedIn photo. These job recruiters need to know that my talents go beyond art directing! LOL."

Getting Full Plump Lips 👄 Naturally
Getting Full Plump Lips 👄 Naturally
GERARD COSMETICS - GERARD COSMETICS Lip Pencil I used shade Cher to out line my lips which helps give my fuller appearance & correct slight shade different. GC offers one of my favorite lip pencils. I prefer wooden pencils as I am able to sharpen them keeps more Sanitary. They are very creamy and opaque . I can many times use them with no other products ontop and they will last 5-6 hrs without wearing off. HANK & HENRY - Lip Love Lux Lipstick I have shade Sext, this is a gorgeous nude which has a micro pearl wrapped around. You don’t have to worry about it being gritty or glittery on your lips as it’s for aesthetic. It has a gorgeous red packaging & push button so your lipstick won’t come out of the camber. These are a comfy satin matte and I do have to touch up if you don’t line your lips. but to me it’s not a big deal. As I prefer a comfortable lipstick verse a super drying one. HANK & HENRY - Your Mom I love this gloss, it’s a semi clear which has micro pearl in the formula (forgot the tones) . The micro pearl doesn’t feel gritty like glitter. This formula is not gummy or tacky feeling. It just gives you a gorgeous glossy shin with soft reflect. I over all love the rectangle packaging. But it’s can be difficult to pull out the gloss as the stopper very tight. I recommend swirling it and scooping it onto your hand a bit then apply. But, as my video shows I choose a natural nude lip. I outlined fully and slightly over lined on the outer areas of my top lip. Then applied the Lipstick of choice and filled in the full lips. Lastly I grabbed a nearly clear gloss lightly dabbing it on the middle of my top & bottom lip. Then I lightly blended it out with my finger tips Which gave me a natural , fuller plump lip, you can use these tips using your favorite lip combos. For the lipstick I would recommend a matte or semi matte. @cherie#beautywithoutbarriers @CheriePick

They have anti-aging and anti-acne benefits. They fade dark spots and improve skin texture. Mood Moosting Fall Lippies w/ lip swatches!
Mood Moosting Fall Lippies w/ lip swatches!
As the temps start to drop and the days get shorter, I look for anything to give me a mood boost. I find that adding a fun lippie can improve my mood, whether I’m bare-faced or rocking natural or glam makeup looks. Here’s a few of my fall faves: Too Faced - Melted Liquified Long Wear Matte Lipstick Limited Edition “gingerbread man”: This was part of the melted matte line and was released for a holiday collection a few years ago. It did come back last year. I’m not sure about this year, but there is a similar looking shade available from the brand this year called “pumpkin”. The formula is thin, comfortable (use a balm underneath), and long-wearing with some transfer. This burnt orange shade is so beautiful - I always get compliments when I wear it! $20ish FENTY BEAUTY - Stunna Lip Paint Longwear Fluid Lip Color “uncensored”: This is very long-wearing despite transferring onto everything - it never looks touched! You must be patient applying because the formula is liquidy and immediately stains. It has a comfortable matte finish. This is a red that would look amazing on all skin tones. I advise getting a mini (sometimes in Fenty holiday sets) because a full size has so much product and mine recently expired (hence no lip swatch - it smells awful now). I intend to repurchase. $25 REVOLUTION - Renaissance Lipstick in “luxe”: This is a comfortable creamy, matte lipstick that screams fall. It’s a warm brown with reddish-orange undertones. Great price point. This would be great for a wide variety of skin tones, too. The packaging is also stunning, which adds to the luxe (pun intended) experience. It fades nicely. I also like to wear this lightly blotted on my lips. $6.50 ANASTASIA Beverly Hills - ANASTASIA Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick in “heathers”: This is a pretty drying matte liquid lip formula, so prep your lips well. The color is so worth it - it’s a gorgeous, long-wearing oxblood red. These sometimes go on sale BOGO (which is how I got mine) so be on the lookout because I’m not sure this is worth $20 on its own. Want a drugstore dupe? NYX cherry skies is almost spot on for about $7. #Bite Beauty - Amuse Bouche Liquified Lipstick[products]#[FourStars] in “cassava”: This discontinued liquified lipstick is a deep plum-berry. It’s so comfortable on the lips and very opaque. Because it doesn’t dry down, it does transfer onto everything and fades faster (but still several hours of wear). I wish Bite hadn’t discontinued these, but I do recommend their lip crayons and amuse bouche bullet lipsticks. Bite usually offers sets, and they have a lab in Toronto and LA to create your own custom lipstick. You *may* be able to find this or other shades in this formula at TJ Maxx/Marshall’s. All brands are cruelty-free, and Bite is 100% vegan. #CheriePartner
Almost 5 years deep now☀️🌰🏖🥥🧡
Almost 5 years deep now☀️🌰🏖🥥🧡
I tried Bum Bum cream when Sol de Janeiro first landed at Sephora in the Spring of 2016, & been hooked ever since. I’ve barely dabbled in other body creams since first trying & I used to like to change up scents frequently, but the combination of lasting fragrance/moisture has me set for life🌴 SOL de Janeiro - Brazilian Bum Bum Cream I was initially drawn to this because it was the first beauty product i had seen containing Guaraná. 🥤I was familiar with the Brazilian soda of the same name... because it’s sheer insanity.☕️Guaraná seeds have 2-5x the amount of caffeine of coffee! Caffeine stimulates circulation! In regards to cellulite prevention: Over 4 years of use, & still have none at 32! 🥥🌰It’s so nourishing & moisturizing with Coconut Oil & Cupuaçu Butter. Full of fatty-acids, Phytosterols & Polyphenols to lock in hydration & restore skin’s elasticity. Antioxidant & vitamin rich oils like Açaí fruit & Carrot seed. 🥕Carrot seed oil combines repairing vitamin A, collagen-boosting vitamin C & moisturizing vitamin E to help smooth lines, repair sun damage & scars. Brazil Nut oil helps maintain skin health. Guaraná isn’t the only caffeinated ingredient, it also contains Guayusa leaf extract. Native to the Amazon, it’s naturally packed with caffeine, antioxidants & a distinctly synergistic blend of vitamins, minerals & 15 essential amino acids. ➕hyaluronic acid💊 The scent is described as Pistachio, Almond, Heliotrope flower, Jasmine petals, Vanilla, Salted Caramel & Sandalwood. It’s definitely complex, warm & sweet. The secrets obviously been out because everyone wears this, but over the years I’ve never gotten so many compliments & inquires about my scent as I do with bum bum. Pronounced “Boom Boom” by the way☺️ I would describe it as a buttercream & roasted nuts, without being overly sweet. I love that I smell amazing even the next day after using this. The slight shimmer has always been a plus for me, & has never messed up my clothes (& I’m very particular about that) The finish isn’t shiny, & it absorbs really well. SOL de Janeiro - Brazilian Touch Hand Cream After all the extra hand washing this year, this has been my new bestie. Most of the same moisturizing ingredients as above as well as Turmeric & Yerba Mate. The scent is slightly less sweet than bum bum & has no shimmer, making it the perfect hand cream. Absorbs really well & delivers lasting moisture. SOL de Janeiro - Coco Cabana Cream Just not my cup of tea. The scent is very caramel-coconut, but comes across pretty burnt sugar. It actually contains fermented sugar, a purified natural humectant. Its just super sticky & shiny. SOL de Janeiro - Brazilian Crush Body Fragrance Mist A light version of bum bum scent, I wish it were a bit stronger. SOL de Janeiro - Brazilian 4 Play Moisturizing Shower Cream-Gel This smells pretty identical to bum bum. Very nice!
Creating Your Skin Care Routine
Creating Your Skin Care Routine
Okay all you PYTs, this one's for you. You're young, you're beautiful, and you haven't thought much about taking care of your skin in the long run. That's okay, but it's time to adult now. I'm about to drop some knowledge on you. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (the AAD) here's how you can start your skin care journey: 1) Pay attention to your skin type and give your skin what it needs. If you have sensitive skin, use products formulated for sensitive skin, if you have dry skin use moisturizing products, and if you have oils skin use oil free or noncomedogenic products. 2) PROTECT YOUR SKIN FROM ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION. This is the most important part so Imma say it again 💁🏼‍♀️ PROTECT YOUR SKIN FROM ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION. Ultra violet radiation from the sun (or God forbid, a tanning bed) can lead to early skin aging and CANCER. To protect yourself, seek shade whenever possible, wear protective clothing, and use a broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen of an SPF of 30 or higher. THAT MEANS NO MORE TANNING ❌ That awesome tan you got from laying out all summer? Yeah, that's damaged skin. Without sun protection, UVA rays are able to penetrate the middle layer of skin (the dermis) and damage collagen fibers resulting in a build up of elastin which then contributes to wrinkles and leathery skin. But more on sun damage in a later post. Sun damage is not a joke 📢 take it from a redhead‼️ 3) Use a retinoid if possible. Retinoids have been dubbed "the gold standard of anti-aging" for a reason, y'all! Retinoids increase the rate of cellular turnover to exfoliate clogged pores and reduce the appearance of fine lines, essentially treating acne and wrinkles simultaneously 👏👏👏 It's recommended to start simple, meaning wash your face with a gentle cleanser in the morning and at night, use a moisturizer with SPF during the day (don't forget to reapply) and a retinoid at night. If you don't experience irritation with the retinoid, don't deviate from this routine for at least 2 months. That's a ball park of how long you will need to get comfortable with the retinoid. This routine is a great starting (or starting over) point because it allows you to get to know your skin and see what you'd like to address after the retinoid has taken effect. My personal advice is to find a retinoid that you love and build the rest of your skin care routine around it. Pictured is my favorite retinol cream Neutrogena - Rapid Wrinkle Regenerating Face Cream The brand Neutrogena is owned by Johnson&Johnson, which has over 20 years of research and development of retinol and over 20 retinol patents. This particular product was the subject of a clinical trial which resulted in ongoing improvement of wrinkles, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation in patients throughout 1 year of nightly use. Unfortunately, I will have to revisit this AMAZING product in another post because of Cherie's character limit 😢 Stay tuned! And happy skincare hunting! ❤️
