What’s the Difference Between a Gel Manicure and Shellac Nails?

Trying to decide what you want to get at your next (or first!) nail appointment? You have lots of options to choose from, but it can be tricky to figure out which is best for you, especially if you’ve never been or only been with friends. Don’t worry, not everyone is a manicure aficionado and it’s perfectly okay not to know the difference.
To save you any potential embarrassment about asking when you’re in the salon (which isn’t embarrassing, by the way), we’re going to guide you through the differences so you can make the best decision for you.
So What’s the Difference Between a Gel Manicure and Shellac Nails?
So, a gel manicure isn’t hugely different from shellac nails. Gel nails are fairly self-explanatory; they’re made of liquid gel. Gel polishes are made from a combination of acrylic monomers and oligomers that go hard under a UV light that is designed just for this purpose. The UV wavelengths hit molecules called “photo initiators” in the gel formula which activates them, creating a hard, glossy coat. Gel manicures offer far more color options than shellac.
Shellac is made up of half regular nail polish, half gel, and is usually applied with two color coats and another coat on top.
Between each coat, your nail technician will “cure” the colour and set the polish. This is done by placing your nails under a UV light.
Shellac Nails vs a Gel Manicure: Results
The results are pretty similar, with shellac having a slightly more refined appearance, while gel has far more color options and is the polish most manicurists will use if you want a creative design, as the gel has a little more integrity than shellac when its wet.
Shellac Nails vs a Gel Manicure: Cost
This is heavily dependent on the area in which you live and the brand and experience of the salon or manicurist you go to. In general, though, you should be looking at between $40-$60 for a shellac manicure, and the average cost of a gel manicure in the US is $51.29, so they are comparable on cost.
Shellac Nails vs a Gel Manicure: Duration
Both options last between 10 days and 3 weeks, but gel nails usually last a little longer than shellac, due to the mixture of regular polish.
Shellac Nails vs a Gel Manicure: Which is Better for Your Nails?
Any manicure that uses a lamp will entail your hand being placed under a UV light. Protect the skin on your hands with SPF sunscreen 10 minutes before your appointment, to avoid any UV damage.
As for your nails, if they’re naturally brittle, you may want to improve your nail health before trying a shellac or gel manicure. Be sure to apply cuticle oil every day and use a thick hand moisturizer to prevent your skin and nails from getting dehydrated and affected by harsh chemicals.
Any manicure involving polish, gel, or glue will potentially damage your nails, so talk to your salon about whether they have any advice or can use a protective layer under your manicure (though be aware that it may not last as long).
Some people also like to have two manicures in a row and then let their nails “breathe” for the next duration, so they have a chance to recover regularly.
Shellac Nails vs a Gel Manicure: Ease of Removal
Firstly, we advise you simply return to the salon to get your manicure removed whenever possible – they have the right products to do so in a way that will leave your natural nails in the best condition. It really is worth the trip.
If you want to remove gel nails at home, you’ll need to file the top layer off and then soak your nails in acetone. Cut a piece of cotton wool for each nail. Place each cotton pad piece on top of each nail, then wrap your fingertips in tin foil, twisting it at the top like a Hershey’s Kiss.
Let it sit for 15 minutes while you watch TV or read a book, unwrap, and gently push off the gel using a cotton wool bud.
Warning: peeling off a gel manicure can do significant damage to your nails, so if you don’t have the right equipment just head to a salon (any nail salon should be able to do it for you).
Shellac nails are typically a lot easier to remove and will cause less damage if done at home, because you won’t have to buff your nail plate. It’s always a better idea to get your shellac nails removed professionally, though, because they have the equipment to do so. This is especially true if you’ve already got weak and brittle nails, as there’s a much higher chance they’ll snap from the treatment.
Can I Do a Shellac or Gel Manicure at Home?
Most people generally opt to have shellac applied (and removed!) at a salon, but if you’re feeling really independent, there are at home kits you can invest in. Whether you opt for a gel manicure or shellac nails is entirely up to you, depending on how long you’d like it to last, how many color options you’d like and how strong your nails are prior to having them done.
All in all, there’s not a huge difference in the fundamentals of gel manicures or shellac nails: it really lies in the way they’re removed and the effect that they can have on your nails prior to removal. Gel manicures and shellac nails are a great way of giving that sleek, shiny look that will last about a week or so longer than your average DIY bottle polish. Plus, who doesn’t love an opportunity to head to a salon and feel pampered every once in a while?

At Home Exfoliating Facial ✨✨
At Home Exfoliating Facial ✨✨
So I recently received the Mimi Co Exfoliating Wand via IG PR. I couldn’t wait to do a full facial and I decided to do it tonight. Order: I purchased a steamer from Amazon for $23 and I’m obsessed with it (DM me for product info). I started with UpCircle - Cleansing Face Balm With Apricot Powder As my oil cleanse to get my sunscreen from today off and any other oils and dirts. INDIE LEE - Purifying Face Wash This cleanser is perfect for getting dirts and oils from skin as well. It’s not drying and it’s totally worth it! I paired it with a face cleansing scrub brush, I also purchased from Amazon. I love it and I paid around $20 for it as well! It doubles the vibration frequency put out by Foreo. CLARISMA - Namaste Glow Energizing Face Mask This was the mask I chose for the enzyme properties. This breaks down dirts and oils in pores and dead skin cells. I also steamed my face during this time. Follain - Toning Mist: Balance + Prime This was what I sprayed over my face for the prep for my exfoliating wand. I didn’t have a true medium and I am out of Aloe Vera plants so😭 I then exfoliated with my wand starting at my cheeks and working upward and then to my forehead. I went down and to the sides of my nose. Glow slow! innisfree - Jeju Lava Seawater Lotion I used the toner to cleanse my skin and get any dirts left over from me exfoliating. SUMMER FRIDAYS - Jet Lag Mask I use this as my hydrating mask. I took the back of my Mimi Co Wand on switched to the Moisturizing Setting. I gently slid upwards my entire face for the last 2 mins only and then wiped the mask off with a damp cloth. earthtoskin - Tea Time Anti Aging Eye Cream This is the most hydrating eye cream I own. I used this with the back of my cleansing brush on the heat setting! Yes it made my eye feel so hydrated and relaxed. fresh - Lotus Anti-Aging Night Moisturizer This was the final step as a good moisturizer seals in everything! To prevent acne I use the SUNDAY RILEY - U.F.O. Ultra-Clarifying Face Oil as my last step. I didn’t use an astringent type toner, so I wanted to still treat my skin💚

I won this cute little kit in a raffle & I couldn’t be more thankful! I have always wanted to try these products but never wanted to spend the money on all of them incase I didn’t like them! Framboos Glycolic Resurfacing Night Serum DRUNK ELEPHANT - C-Firma Vitamin C Day Serum DRUNK ELEPHANT - Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil DRUNK ELEPHANT - Umbra Tinte Physical Daily Defense Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 30 That’s literally a whole skincare routine! So far I started out my day with one of Drunk Elephants infamous “Face Smoothies” I washed my face with Beste No. 9 Jelly Cleanser & then combined C-Firma Day Serum, Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil, & Protini Polypeptide Cream together on my mixing trey with a disposable skincare spatula! I applied it all over my face & neck. Once that absorbed, I applied Umbra Tinte Daily Defense SPF 30 over my face & neck & was done! I love how the kit comes with steps to walk you through different routines you can use in the morning or at night! I will do a follow up review after I have used all the products for a few weeks! DISAPPOINTED BY THESE 100% NATURAL PRODUCTS 😩
DISAPPOINTED BY THESE 100% NATURAL PRODUCTS 😩
I was so excited to try these out because I love moisturizers & I am always in search of a good one! These looked & sounded very promising! They’re from a woman owned company, completely natural, vegan, & cruelty free! However, I was quite disappointed. EARTH HARBOR - MERMAID MILK Nutrient Glow Moisturizer This moisturizer claims to give you a glow right away & it contains spirulina + matcha. I was excited about the matcha because it has so many amazing benefits for skin. It has a very whipped consistency which I like. However it always contains essential oils that were strong, although not toooo strong for my liking. But I’m really just not a fan of essential oils in my face creams. The moisturizer did make my skin appear a little brighter but the cream just sat on my face. All day long I could touch my face & still feel the cream sitting there! I hate that feeling! It also almost gave me a greasy appearance after a while? Not a fan. EARTH HARBOR - SIREN SILK Multi-Tasking Hydration Creme This one was absolutely awful. If I could give it 0 stars I would. It says to use it at night time & the apply it at least 5 minutes before bed so it can absorb on your face & not your pillow. It contains Sea Retinol + other Superherbs which normally make me love a product! But that just wasn’t enough here. First, when I put it on my face my eyes started to actually burn & I felt suffocated from the scent. It was THAT strong. Guys, I’m not being dramatic at all. The smell like attacked me it was crazy! I have never had something like that happen with a face cream! I couldn’t believe how strong the fragrance was. & to top it off, it wasn’t even a pretty smell. My husband described it as smelling like floor cleaner. But I powered through. The longer I had it on, the more “used” to the smell I got. So, I wore it overnight. But then I woke up even more upset with it! I had pilling all over my face. It almost looked like my face was peeling but it wasn’t, it was jus the cream. One thing I cannot stand about a moisturizer is pulling. That’s enough for me to throw it out! It also didn’t really even moisturize my face that well! All in all, I hated this experience. But if you want, you should try them out for yourself, don’t let my experience deter you from trying something new! I however, will be sticking with my Youth To The People Dream Mask & Superfood Whipped Moisturizer! Love those two!! YOUTH TO THE PEOPLE - Superberry Hydrate + Glow Dream Mask YOUTH TO THE PEOPLE - Superfood Air-Whip Moisture Cream 💗💗💗 @cherie@Cheriebeauty@CheriePick
