Top 4 Ways to Make Washing Your Coily Hair a Breeze
Jul. 23, 2020
As anyone with coily hair knows, when that time comes to wash your hair it can be a serious undertaking, and it doesn’t always lead to the results you were hoping for! With so many options out there for methods of washing your coily hair, it can all seem a little overwhelming to find something that will work for you as an individual.
So, how to wash coily hair in a way that actually makes it look good from the moment it dries? Or, simply what’s the easiest way to wash coily hair so you don’t have to spend hours in the shower? Well, don’t fret! Here are the top 4 ways you can make washing your coily hair a total breeze.
1. Select the Best Conditioning Regime
The option to use a deep conditioner is one that is debated continuously by those with coily hair. Some people swear by using conditioners only, to keep their coils hydrated and shiny, whereas others find that a deep conditioner doesn’t seem to work for them. However you feel about conditioners, they really are very beneficial to your coil hair, you just need to know how to get the best out of them.
Deep conditioners are a vital part of keeping your coily hair hydrated and protected from breakage. They are packed with lubricants, oils, and proteins that moisturize and encourage stronger, more elastic coils.
There is no solid rule about how often you should use a deep conditioner. It simply depends on personal preference. Those with more fragile hair, due to damaging activities such as using color-treatments, using heat tools, or swimming, will choose to use a deep condition every time they wash their hair, whereas others will not need to condition their coils quite so much.
You also need to ensure that you only detangle your hair when it is wet and covered in conditioner and this will help to prevent damage and loss of curl pattern. Better still, it helps to ease tugging on the scalp, which can otherwise be a little painful!
It is also up to you whether you use shampoo or not. Using conditioner in place of shampoo is known as co-washing. Some people with coily hair will exclusively use this method, while others will use shampoo once a week or fortnight. It’s up to you to try a few different methods and see what you like best, but avoid harsh or cheap shampoo (especially anti-dandruff shampoo) as this will cause you frizz and dryness problems.
2. Try the LOC Method
The LOC method, created by Alikay Naturals, stands for ‘Leave-in, Oil, Cream’. This method has been specifically designed to reduce damage to coily hair through hydration and maximizing the sealing in of moisture.
Step 1: Leave-in
- Starting with a leave-in conditioner provides your coils with moisture.
- Use a water-based conditioner to prevent build-up of product.
- Separate your hair into sections (4-8) to get an even coverage.
- Spread the conditioner through your hair using your fingers.
Step 2: Oil
- Oil helps to lock in the moisture provided in Step 1.
- Only apply a thin layer – too much will lead to limp coils.
- The oil you select depends on your curl pattern and the porosity of your hair.
Step 3: Cream
- A moisturizing cream also helps to lock in moisture and keep your hair super hydrated.
- It can also be used to style your hair.
3. Pre-Plan a Night Routine
Alongside your wash routine, you should also be taking steps to stop your coils being damaged, particularly while you sleep. Not only will a good night routine help to reduce damage it can also make it easier to style your hair the next day.
Put Twists in Your Hair
In addition to a curling cream, put two-strand twists in your hair, starting as close to the scalp as possible, to keep your coils defined and safe from damage. Just ensure that you make your twists super tight, no matter how big or small your sections are.
Sleep with a Silk Pillowcase or Silk Scarf
Traditional cotton pillowcases, although soft, can actually damage coily hair while you are sleeping. By using a silk pillowcase, or wrapping a silk scarf around your hair, your coils are given the freedom to slide around smoothly, leading to less breakages and minimal frizz.
4. Choose Natural
One of the best things you can do for your coily hair is allow it to be its natural self. This hair type doesn’t like to be messed with, so if you have the option, the best thing you can do is simply take care of and enhance what you already have. You know what that means? Avoid using any heat. All hair types can be damaged by excessive heat, and with coily hair being the most fragile, heat drying and styling can do serious harm.
Yes, air drying hair can take a lot of time, but here are a couple of ways to give the process a little head start:
- Squeeze and Shake – this will help to get rid of the bulk of that excess moisture so that there is less water to dry.
- Wrap in a t-shirt or microfiber towel – this will take excess water from your hair, just make sure you resist the urge to rub!
Whatever you take from these tips, just remember that a lot of finding out what will work for you is down to trial and error, so don’t be afraid to try new things and find out what you like best!
DISAPPOINTED BY THESE 100% NATURAL PRODUCTS 😩
I was so excited to try these out because I love moisturizers & I am always in search of a good one! These looked & sounded very promising! They’re from a woman owned company, completely natural, vegan, & cruelty free! However, I was quite disappointed. EARTH HARBOR - MERMAID MILK Nutrient Glow Moisturizer This moisturizer claims to give you a glow right away & it contains spirulina + matcha. I was excited about the matcha because it has so many amazing benefits for skin. It has a very whipped consistency which I like. However it always contains essential oils that were strong, although not toooo strong for my liking. But I’m really just not a fan of essential oils in my face creams. The moisturizer did make my skin appear a little brighter but the cream just sat on my face. All day long I could touch my face & still feel the cream sitting there! I hate that feeling! It also almost gave me a greasy appearance after a while? Not a fan. EARTH HARBOR - SIREN SILK Multi-Tasking Hydration Creme This one was absolutely awful. If I could give it 0 stars I would. It says to use it at night time & the apply it at least 5 minutes before bed so it can absorb on your face & not your pillow. It contains Sea Retinol + other Superherbs which normally make me love a product! But that just wasn’t enough here. First, when I put it on my face my eyes started to actually burn & I felt suffocated from the scent. It was THAT strong. Guys, I’m not being dramatic at all. The smell like attacked me it was crazy! I have never had something like that happen with a face cream! I couldn’t believe how strong the fragrance was. & to top it off, it wasn’t even a pretty smell. My husband described it as smelling like floor cleaner. But I powered through. The longer I had it on, the more “used” to the smell I got. So, I wore it overnight. But then I woke up even more upset with it! I had pilling all over my face. It almost looked like my face was peeling but it wasn’t, it was jus the cream. One thing I cannot stand about a moisturizer is pulling. That’s enough for me to throw it out! It also didn’t really even moisturize my face that well! All in all, I hated this experience. But if you want, you should try them out for yourself, don’t let my experience deter you from trying something new! I however, will be sticking with my Youth To The People Dream Mask & Superfood Whipped Moisturizer! Love those two!! Wednesday Wellness 🙏🏾
This past week has been rather hard and long for me. I ultimately decided to get back on track with my wellness plan. My main wellness goal for 2021, is to indulge in myself more. I definitely am a firm believe in “as within, so without”. I started my day with: #Four Sigmatic - Mushroom Elixir Mix with Chaga[products]#[FiveStars] I have been getting back into adaptogen and herbal medicine. What we put into our bodies is just as important as what goes on the outside. Adaptogens are apart of ancient medicinal traditions traced all over the world. I also drink Tulsi “Holy Basil” Tea. If you need a pick me up or emotional boost I highly recommend! SUNDAY RILEY - U.F.O. Ultra-Clarifying Face Oil is my treatment of choice I used during the day. Do not be afraid to use salicylic acid during the day. I applied plenty of sunscreen afterwards as well! This is a GODSEND for clearing up acne and acne scarring. It’s by far the best acne treatment I’ve tried and its mostly due to the immediate results I get. This is a dry oil, so it should be used before a heavy moisturizer or sunscreen. THE BODY SHOP - Spa of the World Thai Makrut Lime Firming Oil is a staple in my night time routine. When I want to relax and really unwind I use a body roller with this oil. It smells like a fresh key lime pie and it’s so hydrating. This is great for firming, especially when paired with a body tool. What do you do for wellness?
Clear Hydrated Skin The Clean Way✨
Staying in the trend of clean beauty, I have found an amazing product to add to my everyday routine. Odacité SKINCARE - Blue Aura Cleansing Water This is a cleansing water that is marketed to use in place of your cleanser for a “quick” clean. When looking for a good cleansing water, you want one that is hydrating and gets your face clean. Keep in mind not all cleansing waters are designed to clean makeup (I highly recommend a cleansing balm and cleanser). About This Brand: ✨Vegan ✨Cruelty Free ✨Certified Organic ✨ NO: Fillers | Parabens | Nanoparticles | Petrochemicals | PEG | Synthetic perfumes | Dyes | Phenoxyethanol. This cleansing water is so hydrating and satisfying to use. It smells very fresh and a little goes a long way. What is very important to me is my dry spot aren’t tight or irritated. I have been using this day and night and have seen amazing results acne and skin barrier wise. I included this in my routine after a regular cleanser and before my serums. So essentially, I use this as a “toner”. I do this to clean up anything my cleanse left behind, or the cleanser itself. INGREDIENTS: ✨Tumeric: Amazing for hyperpigmentation and overall skin brightness ✨Holy Basil: I drink the tea and can vouch this is an amazing adaptogen that can overall benefit every aspect of your life. It combats aging and free radical damage. ✨Neem: great anti aging ingredient that helps protects your skin barrier. ✨Aloe Vera Juice: this is great for your skin barrier overall. It hydrated, protects and brightens. I highly recommend this cleansing water and it is on sale for $9 at Boxycharm Pop Up 🥰🥰
