As anyone with coily hair knows, when that time comes to wash your hair it can be a serious undertaking, and it doesn’t always lead to the results you were hoping for! With so many options out there for methods of washing your coily hair, it can all seem a little overwhelming to find something that will work for you as an individual.
So, how to wash coily hair in a way that actually makes it look good from the moment it dries? Or, simply what’s the easiest way to wash coily hair so you don’t have to spend hours in the shower? Well, don’t fret! Here are the top 4 ways you can make washing your coily hair a total breeze.
1. Select the Best Conditioning Regime
The option to use a deep conditioner is one that is debated continuously by those with coily hair. Some people swear by using conditioners only, to keep their coils hydrated and shiny, whereas others find that a deep conditioner doesn’t seem to work for them. However you feel about conditioners, they really are very beneficial to your coil hair, you just need to know how to get the best out of them.
Deep conditioners are a vital part of keeping your coily hair hydrated and protected from breakage. They are packed with lubricants, oils, and proteins that moisturize and encourage stronger, more elastic coils.
There is no solid rule about how often you should use a deep conditioner. It simply depends on personal preference. Those with more fragile hair, due to damaging activities such as using color-treatments, using heat tools, or swimming, will choose to use a deep condition every time they wash their hair, whereas others will not need to condition their coils quite so much.
You also need to ensure that you only detangle your hair when it is wet and covered in conditioner and this will help to prevent damage and loss of curl pattern. Better still, it helps to ease tugging on the scalp, which can otherwise be a little painful!
It is also up to you whether you use shampoo or not. Using conditioner in place of shampoo is known as co-washing. Some people with coily hair will exclusively use this method, while others will use shampoo once a week or fortnight. It’s up to you to try a few different methods and see what you like best, but avoid harsh or cheap shampoo (especially anti-dandruff shampoo) as this will cause you frizz and dryness problems.

Step 1: Leave-in
- Starting with a leave-in conditioner provides your coils with moisture.

Step 2: Oil

Step 3: Cream
- A moisturizing cream also helps to lock in moisture and keep your hair super hydrated.

3. Pre-Plan a Night Routine
Alongside your wash routine, you should also be taking steps to stop your coils being damaged, particularly while you sleep. Not only will a good night routine help to reduce damage it can also make it easier to style your hair the next day.
Put Twists in Your Hair
In addition to a curling cream, put two-strand twists in your hair, starting as close to the scalp as possible, to keep your coils defined and safe from damage. Just ensure that you make your twists super tight, no matter how big or small your sections are.
Sleep with a Silk Pillowcase or Silk Scarf
Traditional cotton pillowcases, although soft, can actually damage coily hair while you are sleeping. By using a silk pillowcase, or wrapping a silk scarf around your hair, your coils are given the freedom to slide around smoothly, leading to less breakages and minimal frizz.
4. Choose Natural
One of the best things you can do for your coily hair is allow it to be its natural self. This hair type doesn’t like to be messed with, so if you have the option, the best thing you can do is simply take care of and enhance what you already have. You know what that means? Avoid using any heat. All hair types can be damaged by excessive heat, and with coily hair being the most fragile, heat drying and styling can do serious harm.
Yes, air drying hair can take a lot of time, but here are a couple of ways to give the process a little head start:
- Squeeze and Shake – this will help to get rid of the bulk of that excess moisture so that there is less water to dry.
- Wrap in a t-shirt or microfiber towel – this will take excess water from your hair, just make sure you resist the urge to rub!
Whatever you take from these tips, just remember that a lot of finding out what will work for you is down to trial and error, so don’t be afraid to try new things and find out what you like best!

I go as slowly as possible so that all of my roots are dry. Next, I twist the brush so that my hair is wrapped around it all the way down the section of hair. I repeat this process until I reach the top of my head. Lastly, I take a straightener to flatten any flyaways or unwanted curls if there are any left. That’s it! In total, the entire process takes me about 20 minutes. My hair feels so soft, light, and looks amazing afterwards. The next time you think about going to purchase a blowout, I recommend trying it at home first! 💕
