Bianca Townsend, founder of Skin Cabinet, shares her journey as an entrepreneur and what she hopes for her business. Learn more about this up-and-coming independent beauty e-tailer, and the entrepreneur who powers it.Why did you start Skin Cabinet? I started Skin Cabinet when I saw there was a void in current retailer offerings. I felt like other retailers had many of the same brands competing against each other with over-crowded product offerings. I saw a lack of inclusivity when it came to women of color brands. I felt like upcoming brands deserved to be seen. What are some values your company lives by?Integrity, trust, communication and customer service. We display these values in every transaction, communication and encounter. We pride ourselves in upholding these values. How important is community to you and your company?Community is the foundation of our brand. It’s the glue that holds us together. Being actively involved in our community is how we grow. Our customers become our friends. We listen to their needs, and figure out ways to make our community stronger. How do you foster a community through selling beauty products? Our goal is to educate through our social channels as much as possible through selling so that our customers make an informed decision. We create a space for the community to provide feedback on their level of service, the brands we carry and how we can continue to grow. What are/were some obstacles you faced/face when/while building your business? When we first launched, there where endless obstacles, from payment processing providers, web design issues and gaining credibility amongst other major retailers. A lot of brands didn’t know who we were so it was very difficult landing brands at our store. One of the main issues we face today is being a boostrapped company, and not being able to scale like we want. What would your advice be to young Black women who want to become entrepreneurs?- Don’t give up no matter how hard it gets. There’s been countless times I’d want to throw the towel in but there’s so much joy in perseverance, and overcoming obstacles. - Come up with a solid plan, and create a timeline with your goals. From micro to macro goals. Write these down so you can keep yourself accountable. I walk around with a journal daily because that’s the only way I’ll complete tasks and goals. - Surround yourself with like-minded people who want to see you succeed. The company you keep play a major role in your life. - Study the industry you are pursuing so you are best equipped. I recently enrolled into esthetics school after studying the industry for years so that I could be even more well-rounded and knowledgeable. How do you source for products to sell or to include in your subscription box? I really pay attention to what’s happening in the beauty world. I do research on the brands, the founders and the ethics of the company. From that point on, we build a relationship and take it from there with testing their products out. What do you hope beauty lovers get from shopping on Skin Cabinet?I hope that shoppers experience a really easy, informative shopping experience. What are your favorite beauty products of the moment?Black Girl Sunscreen spf is my absolute favorite sunscreen right now. I highly recommend it to everyone.

🌟Creator Roundup 🏷 Flawless foundation
Check out these creators’ profiles to see how they perfect the looks! Creator: @tashadow “• I have gone through many foundations but none work as well as this one for my , for its texture, matte - natural finish, application and wear, plus many other pros! • It's medium - full coverage, but you can easily accomplish a light coverage with it ;) ” Creator: @JessieMadison “This foundation I have wanted to try since I was in High School but I could never afford or get my hands on it! So I was super excited to try it! The met my expectations 100%! It’s literally looks like facetune! It doesn’t emphasise any texture or which is a big factor for me choosing and rating a foundation. It’s buildable coverage so if you like medium-full coverage makeup this is perfect for you and you can choose which coverage you are feeling or what your skin needs.” Creator: @katya_reviews “This foundation claims to “self-refresh” during its wear with its trademarked “active force” technology. Whatever that means... Can anyone tell me? Lol. Retailing at 47 dollars, is it worth it? 🧐”
PSL-inspired Mani + Pedi Tutorial
Though deemed “basic”, I truly love anything pumpkin - the color, scent, foods, decor, you name it. Of courseeee to kick off fall I wanted my first fall mani to be inspired by pumpkin. To be honest, this is the first time I’ve painted my nails (aside from my wedding day) since early August. My nails were in rough shape due to constantly painting them, so I took some much needed time off. I also don’t have the steadiest hands, so keep in mind that your mani could look much cleaner than mine! This mani is a PSL- inspired (pumpkin spice latte) French tips with solid colored pedi. The star polish of these nail looks is DECO MIAMI - PSL Nail Lacquer “PSL” (how aptly named). This polish isn’t the best quality-wise. It typically chips within two days, but it’s too gorgeous not to use. It has a cream finish. I got it in a set I purchased a few years ago, but it is available for $12 on the Deco website if you’re interested. Do you have a fave burn orange shade? Leave it below! What You’ll Need: -a burnt orange nail polish -white nail polish (though pale cream would look great, too!) -base coat -top coat -paper reinforcements -tweezers (optional) Mani Steps: 1. Apply your base coat to clean, polish-free nails. 2. Apply at least 2 coats of your burnt orange polish so that your nails are coated opaquely. Let your polish dry for a minimum of 2 hours. Longer is better. You could even do this step the night before. 3. Using tweezers or your fingers (I like tweezers), remove one of the paper reinforcements from its sheet. Lay it on top of your nail so that a small, slightly rounded section is left at the top (the tip). Press down firmly with your free hand so that it sticks (this is why your nails must be super dry or your base polish may come off). 4. Apply an opaque layer of white polish to the tip of the nail. It’s okay if the polish touches the reinforcement. As long as you pressed down, you should get a fairly clean edge. 5. Slowly + carefully remove the paper reinforcement with your other hand or tweezers (I use tweezers) immediately after applying the white tip. 6. Repeat with all other nails on this hand. 7. If any of your edges aren’t as clean as you’d like, you can go back with your burnt orange polish and clean them up with a tiny bit of polish. Let completely dry before applying top coat. 8. Repeat on next hand. Pedi Steps: Repeat steps 1-2 and apply top coat once dry. I personally find it easier to completely finish 1 hand before doing my next hand, but if you’re a mani pro, feel free to breeze through these steps. Also, if you have steadier hands, try free-handing your tips instead of using paper reinforcements. Products I Used: Deco Miami “PSL”, SINFULCOLOR - Professional Nail Polish “Snow Me White”, .INC. - Back to Life Recovery Treatment & Base Coat , Nails Inc 45 second top coat (still testing so no rating) #CheriePartner
Will Salicylic Acid Clear Your Skin?
The short answer is maybe. Here's the long answer. First, let's find out what salicylic acid is. Salicylic acid is a lipid soluble beta hydroxy acid which has comedolytic (inhibits formation of comedones) and desmolytic (breaks the junctions between corneocyte cells in the stratum corneum) properties. How does it work? The molecular structure of salicylic acid is what makes it lipid soluble, allowing it to penetrate the lipid layers between skin cells and dissolve debris in pores. This is how it's able to prevent the formation of comedones (blackheads and whitehead). Furthermore, salicylic acid breaks down the "glue" that holds corneocyte cells together, resulting in the softening and sloughing off of the very top layer of skin cells from the top layer of skin known as the stratum corneum. This is known as exfoliation. Exfoliation helps prevents accumulation of dead skin cells, sebum, makeup, etc. In plain English, it gets down deep into your skin, clears out your pores, and keeps all that gunk from getting back into you pores by not allowing it to build up on your skin. So to answer the title question, if blackheads and whiteheads are an issue for you, yes, salicylic acid may be a great ingredient to incorporate into your skincare routine. NOW, HERE'S THE CATCH. Salicylic acid can absolutely help you on your way to clear skin, BUT you need to use it properly, patiently, and persistently. How to use it: READ AND FOLLOW PRODUCT DIRECTIONS first and foremost to make sure you are properly using each product. Also, consider patch testing the product before putting it on the affected are. If using in wash form, it may help to leave it on your skin for a couple minutes to let the salicylic acid be in contact with your skin longer, then wash off completely. If using in a spot treatment, tread lightly until you know how your skin will react. you also definitely need to makes sure you keep your skin moisturized as salicylic acid can be very drying. And as always, use sunscreen every day. Failure to properly use products containing salicylic acid may result in skin injury!!! How long to use it: Providing it's well tolerated, it's important to give salicylic acid time to work. Trying a product for a week and giving up is common, but salicylic acid can take up to 6 weeks to give you the full result. 6 WEEKS. So if you find a product that you tolerate well, give it time, sis. Be patient. For best results be persistent, trust the process, and don't get discouraged. Taking a "before" picture will help you monitor your progress. Look out for: -allergic reaction -tingling -itching -peeling *make sure to talk to your doctor before using salicylic acid during pregnancy Lastly, the product pictured is Zapzyt, my all time favorite salicylic acid acne wash. It's fragrance free and very gentle on my sensitive skin. You can expect to pay no more than $10 USD and it lasts for months. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk 📢😂 and happy skincare hunting!
Best Foundation for Oily Skin
Today’s topic, my girls, is all about oily skin foundations. I have combination skin. I am a combination oil in summer and combination dry in winter. I am 25, my skin condition is mostly okay through out the season. I have a lot of textures and pores around my T-zone - cheek and nose area. My T-zone and forehead are always oily and supper dry on my cheeks. In my daily skincare routine, I moisturize everything. For my foundation, I am a fan of semi-matte finish look. So I am always looking for a best foundation. I’ve tried and tested a lot through our the year and here I want to share my most favorite one for this year. I always put primer as part of my makeup routine. I moisturize first, then put sunscreen on and primer before foundation. This is my all year round routine. Sunscreen is for protecting my skin from sun damage and aging. With primer, I just found it keeps my foundation stay well throughout the day. Now here comes the review on the star product that we have today. I know a lot of my oily skin friends are loving it. This is to said perfectly made for oily and combination skin. ESTĒE LAUDER - Double Wear Stay-in-Place Foundation I love the overall finish of this product. It has good coverage, 75% of the spots and acne scares are covered pretty well. It is also very light weighted. It is not too heavy or caky. I love the fact that it is creating this flawless finish but still very natural look. And after 6 hours, I start to get oily on my forehead and around my nose area. But it still looks pretty good even with after 10 hours. And I feel like I dont have to powder it that much I would also as always put a thin layer of loose translucent setting powder. One thing I have to say that I personally do not like it too much is the combination of my bronzer with this foundation. I not sure if it is the color or the texture, it makes me look grey every time I put these 2 together. But other than that, this is a fantastic product and I am loving it so far, Highly recommended to oily and combination. Dry skin might want to stay away from it.
Almost 5 years deep now☀️🌰🏖🥥🧡
I tried Bum Bum cream when Sol de Janeiro first landed at Sephora in the Spring of 2016, & been hooked ever since. I’ve barely dabbled in other body creams since first trying & I used to like to change up scents frequently, but the combination of lasting fragrance/moisture has me set for life🌴 SOL de Janeiro - Brazilian Bum Bum Cream I was initially drawn to this because it was the first beauty product i had seen containing Guaraná. 🥤I was familiar with the Brazilian soda of the same name... because it’s sheer insanity.☕️Guaraná seeds have 2-5x the amount of caffeine of coffee! Caffeine stimulates circulation! In regards to cellulite prevention: Over 4 years of use, & still have none at 32! 🥥🌰It’s so nourishing & moisturizing with Coconut Oil & Cupuaçu Butter. Full of fatty-acids, Phytosterols & Polyphenols to lock in hydration & restore skin’s elasticity. Antioxidant & vitamin rich oils like Açaí fruit & Carrot seed. 🥕Carrot seed oil combines repairing vitamin A, collagen-boosting vitamin C & moisturizing vitamin E to help smooth lines, repair sun damage & scars. Brazil Nut oil helps maintain skin health. Guaraná isn’t the only caffeinated ingredient, it also contains Guayusa leaf extract. Native to the Amazon, it’s naturally packed with caffeine, antioxidants & a distinctly synergistic blend of vitamins, minerals & 15 essential amino acids. ➕hyaluronic acid💊 The scent is described as Pistachio, Almond, Heliotrope flower, Jasmine petals, Vanilla, Salted Caramel & Sandalwood. It’s definitely complex, warm & sweet. The secrets obviously been out because everyone wears this, but over the years I’ve never gotten so many compliments & inquires about my scent as I do with bum bum. Pronounced “Boom Boom” by the way☺️ I would describe it as a buttercream & roasted nuts, without being overly sweet. I love that I smell amazing even the next day after using this. The slight shimmer has always been a plus for me, & has never messed up my clothes (& I’m very particular about that) The finish isn’t shiny, & it absorbs really well. SOL de Janeiro - Brazilian Touch Hand Cream After all the extra hand washing this year, this has been my new bestie. Most of the same moisturizing ingredients as above as well as Turmeric & Yerba Mate. The scent is slightly less sweet than bum bum & has no shimmer, making it the perfect hand cream. Absorbs really well & delivers lasting moisture. SOL de Janeiro - Coco Cabana Cream Just not my cup of tea. The scent is very caramel-coconut, but comes across pretty burnt sugar. It actually contains fermented sugar, a purified natural humectant. Its just super sticky & shiny. SOL de Janeiro - Brazilian Crush Body Fragrance Mist A light version of bum bum scent, I wish it were a bit stronger. SOL de Janeiro - Brazilian 4 Play Moisturizing Shower Cream-Gel This smells pretty identical to bum bum. Very nice!
