Jul. 22, 2020
If you have thick hair you may feel like you struggle with styling and want to make your hair thinner. If you’re looking to learn how to get thinner hair, we can assure you there are many options available that can alter your voluminous locks and make them appear finer. From updating your hair care arsenal with products, to keep your hair tamed, to replacing scissors with thinning shears, check out these tips to learn how to make thick hair thinner in no time. But before you get scissor happy on your mane read below our 5 tips to ensure you achieve the best results.
It may not look how you imagine
Depending on your hair type, you may think that thinning out your hair is the best option to achieve that perfect style. For example, if you have curly hair, you may always fantasize about what it’d be like to have straight hair. And if you have thick hair, you may be wishing you had thin hair instead. You know what it’s like, we always want what we can’t have. But thick hair has its own benefits too—you never have to worry about volume, and that’s something your thin-haired friends are likely totally envious of. That being said, sometimes thick hair can have the tendency to look a little too poufy, which may have you wishing for thinned out hair. But beware thinning out too much may make your hair damaged or misshaped.
It may become dirtier quicker
Thinner hair will also seem greasy/dirty quicker than thick hair. If you’re used to washing your hair often then this shouldnt be a problem for you but if and when you get your hair thinned out be prepared to wash your hair almost every other day. Thinner hair tends to be smoother and less porous than coarser hair types, so the oils sit visibly on top of the hair.
Styling will be different
Your current thick hair style may have natural volume and sit in a certain natural wave. You will probably be taking this for granted at the moment and will have to consider that if and when you get your hair thinned out you will have to rethink how you style every day. A thinner cut will result in a completely different style, even if you put your hair up in a bun - there will be much less of it. But this may not be the case for everyone, if your hair is incredibly thick and unruly, a little thinning out may make it easier to style. Hair that has been thinned dries quicker, and it is easier to style. Less product is used, and hair is quickly put into place with little effort.
It may alter your natural pattern
If you do have a natural wave pattern or certain volume then by thinning out your style will obviously alter this but thinning the ends of hair adds texture, which is ideal for most of today's popular styles. Textured hair is easier to style and lies better than hair that has been blunt cut.
Choose the best method
Thinning shears would be the best way to ensure you avoid damage, but razoring can cause your ends to look dry and frizzy. If your hair is over thinned, your hair can look thin on the ends and more bulky at the roots looking like you have thinned split ends. When done correctly, thinning creates volume when it is done close to the scalp. Short hairs close to the scalp tend to stand up, pushing the longer hairs up and away from the scalp. You can also ask for layers to help your hair look thinner and make it more manageable to style.
Heatless waves make for healthy hair!
2021 means extra self care! All month I will be doing masks, skin, and hair treatments to get myself on track. This includes avoiding using any heat on my hair! A great way to avoid heat but also give my straight hair texture is by using silicone hair curlers! My hair is very long so the easier way for me to use is by putting my hair in a ponytail and wrapping the ends of my hair around the curlers. I added OUAI - OUAI Wave Spray before i curled for extra texture. I left these in my hair for about 20 minutes and was pretty happy with the results. Definitely not a perfect curl and yes I do prefer heat - but for a no damage solution, I’ll take it! I’ll be reaching for these more often this month! What are some self care things you are doing in the new year?
Slugging made EASY!
The idea of slugging? Totally amazing. But dipping your fingers in a Vaseline jar has always freaked me out. These vaseline sticks have been gaining popularity on Tik Tok and I’m seeing them in Target for the first time EVER. However, some fellow beauty editor friends say this isn’t new and Vaseline has had these for awhile. I’ve been really into diving into the differences between “Hydration” & “Moisture” so I’m really excited to do some mini slugging sessions with this guy. It’s also perfect for any dry areas on my body. #Vaseline - All-Over Body Balm Stick[products]#[FiveStars]
this hair repair treatment saved my split ends!
this amazing hair mask was kindly gifted by Sol De Janeiro. You know that feeling when tranquility washes over you, you hear the crunchy waves crash onto the shore, you feel that cool breeze envelope your body like a blanket, and you can almost taste the salty air? that’s how I felt using this hair mask. It felt like I was on a tropical island, sipping on pink lemonade. no joke, after washing this mask off I immediately noticed that my split ends were repaired. It was like magic. as somebody with major split ends and hair breakage, it literally felt like this mask was working voodoo on my head. i usually lose a lot of my hair, and my split ends look... well split. not with this mask. it hydrated my hair like no other, and smelled SO SO SO amazing. it even made my hair much more manageable to detangle and style. def recommend, 10/10.
NEW Sephora Best Skin Ever Review
The Sephora best skin ever foundation just dropped and I am obsessed. I was gifted this product before it dropped and I have been able to test it out a few times. First off I am very impressed with this shade range, they did a great job creating colors for all skin tones and all undertones. I am the shade 35N. There are so many great things about this foundation. First off it’s very buildable and it feels light on the skin. The product claims to be medium coverage and long wearing and I definitely agree. I’ve worn this foundation for over eight hours and it still looked great. I would describe it as a soft matte finish. I don’t apply my foundation with sponges, only brushes, but it went on nice and smooth with a dense brush. I love how this foundation is only $20, that is a great price for a quality foundation. If you are looking for a new foundation I would definitely recommend this one.
Body Hair removal tool: worth it or waste?
This is the FINISHING TOUCH FLAWLESS - Flawless Legs Instant and Painless Ladies Hair Remover I’ll start by saying I love it! It works sooo well and it really does a great job at removing hair. It’s completely painless and rechargeable so you don’t have to worry about batteries. It gave me a pretty clean finish and my legs were pretty smooth. It’s great to have on-the-go for those days when you forget to shave! 🪒 If you swipe through the pictures, I have before and after photos of my legs 😊 *I do not recommend this for hair in the armpit region or any where else besides the arms and legs*
