Thinning Hair Causes and Treatments
Thinning hair is a worldwide condition. Men regularly experience hair loss from male pattern baldness, but both women and men may experience thin hair in their lifetime. The pattern in men is different to the pattern in women. Men develop recession at the temples, thinning and eventually a bald spot on the top of the head then potentially total baldness. Women develop diffuse thinning over the entire scalp that is most pronounced over the crown.
However, when hair loss is premature or severe, it can cause distress. Unfortunately, there’s no magic cure involved but the good news is there is a growing range of treatments available to slow or reduce hair loss, and stimulate partial regrowth. Read on to discover what causes thinning hair and how you can treat it.
All men and women will be affected by patterned hair loss at some stage in their lives. While the majority of men have developed temporal recession by their mid 20s and noticeable balding by their mid 50s, for most women, hair loss is mild and only occurs later in life. It is usually the result of genetic and hormonal factors. Hereditary baldness is so common that it is considered to be a normal part of the ageing process.
Other causes of thinning hair could be poor nutrition, overuse of commercial hair products, reactions/allergies to chemicals and even illness. Some people think that stress, diet, wearing hats, frequent washing and drinking alcohol are causes of hair loss, but researchers have found no link between any of these activities and patterned hair loss. There is some uncertainty about smoking cigarettes and hair loss, but the evidence is not strong.
Although there is no cure for hair loss, a number of treatments can slow or reduce hair loss, stimulate partial regrowth or replace damaged hair.
There are a few things you can do now to reduce thinning hair such as avoiding pulling hair into tight buns, ponytails or braids. Repeated tension can cause a form of hair loss known as traction alopecia. Use a brush made from a flexible material and bristles with rounded tips. High heat can cause damage and breakage so use heat-styling tools sparingly. You should also avoid centre parts or try switching your part from one side to the other, which creates volume by lifting hairs that have been trained to lie flat. Consider a short cut, which focuses attention on fuller-looking growth close to the scalp. Hair loss shampoos and tonics can also help with hair retention and the condition of hair and scalp: especially those with a phyto-caffeine formula. Caffeine has been shown to stimulate the growth of strong, thick hair cells and can also help to protect roots against hormonal changes.
It could be something as simple as your diet! Make sure you’re consuming enough proteins and ensure you’re getting your daily doses of Vitamin D and B12.
You could also consider prescriptions. There are two clinically approved drugs for preventing further hair loss – finasteride and minoxidil. Both treatments may result in some hair regrowth but they include the risk of side-effects. You should consult your GP for further information. The more serious treatment would be a hair transplant if you already have significant hair loss. Before hair thinning, the average person has around 100,000 hairs; at least 25,000 are required to give the appearance of a relatively complete head of hair. The transplant process involves taking hair follicles from the back and sides of the head and grafting them onto the scalp - again consult a GP for more.
PSST... it's time for a SCALP DETOX! 🧖🏻♀️🌿
Be honest! When was the last time you used a clarifying shampoo? It's okay if never but I hope not everyday! I want to boldly express you should NOT use detoxing/deep cleaning shampoos everyday. Here's why.... all kinds of stuff builds up on your scalp after using products like hairspray, dry shampoo, heat protectant, etc. even regular shampoos & conditioners can leave behind a residue over time. This residue on your scalp can cause a lot of things, for some people (like myself) hair becomes greasy & limp. Others experience dry & dullness. That's why we have detoxifying products! They are removing buildup while purifying the scalp. The amount of time between deep cleaning depends on your lifestyle. For example I have mid length, color treated, wavy hair & I use this product 2x a month when I notice that I feel the need to wash more than my hair normally needs. But if you are a swimmer maybe you'll need to remove chlorine from your hair more often. Using them too often can become stripping and cause an imbalance of the natural oils in your hair. It's nice to be without buildup but your scalp needs to stay hydrated just like the rest of your body! Do research for YOUR hair type. If you do decide to incorporate a clarifying shampoo into your routine, here's some tips.... TWO ROUNDS OF CLEANSING! Same application as a regular shampoo but just double time. Allow the shampoo to sit in the second round so the residue can fully dissolve. You can repeat as many times as you feel necessary ONLY if you don't experience hair dryness. USE A DEEP CONDITIONER AFTER! It's very important that you allow the hair & scalp to maintain their moisture. COLOR TREATED HAIR IS SAFE! As long as you are not freshly out of the salon (at least 1 week after) you can clarify your hair! It will benefit you in the long run as long as you don't overdo it. Let's talk product.... KRISTIN ESS - Deep Clean Clarifying Shampoo ⚠️this does contain fragrance for those who prefer non-fragrant products!⚠️ I use this clarifies 2x a month as I said before! I consider this a part of my pampering routine. So the company recommends an amount of product based on the thickness of your hair. I would say I use about a cookie size amount. It is more lightweight than a regular shampoo, almost a soapy texture. I follow up with two forms of conditioner if I don't have a deep treatment mask. Out of the shower I use detangler & serum from Pacifica! They're a match made in heaven. I allow my hair to air dry & voila! Soft, non-greasy, healthy hair! Take your hair on a spa day, try out a detoxifying shampoo, & see if you notice a difference but DON'T FORGET TO DEEP CONDITION! Happy clarifying my loves! 🥰
✨🦋 Sulwhasoo Perfecting Cushion Compact 🦋✨
This years Sulwhasoo limited edition refillable compact was created in collaboration with Antoinette Poisson. Sulwhasoo is a Korean luxury skincare & cosmetics company, known for their “ 한방 /Hanbang “ (traditional, holistic Korean medicine) formulations. ‘A Paris chez Antoinette Poisson’ is a world renowned design house inspired by 18th Century decorative arts & production techniques. Founded in 2012, the collective produces exquisite printed papers, decorative objects & fabrics from their atelier in Paris. Named after Louis the XV's favorite mistress, The Marquise de Pompadour, both patron of the arts & wallpaper enthusiast. Sulwhasoo - Limited Edition Perfecting Cushion 2020 Spring Collection 🧵So beautiful... & plush, just like a real pin cushion! For this limited edition compact, the studio of artists at Antoinette Poisson reinterpreted traditional Korean symbols of love, prosperity & happiness in colorful & metallic embroidery. Both limited edition & regular Sulwhasoo cushion compacts retail for $65 & come filled, plus 1 refill. This is no longer available on Sulwhasoo’s site, but online stores like Bergdorfs, Nordstrom & Bloomingdales still have it in a few shades! I included some pictures of gorgeous ones from years past in my slides🦋🦌 Now onto the formula! Sulwhasoo - Perfecting Cushion Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ Sunscreen shade: 23 I didn’t know if the shade I purchased was going to be correct, but I really wanted the limited edition compact! I figured I can grab a refill in another shade later. I was extremely impressed by this! I love that it has SPF 50 from a mainly mineral source & the moisturizing formula has Niacinamide as the 8th ingredient. Other botanical extracts include, Honey, Sacred Lotus flower, Peony, Solomon’s Seal, White Lily & Rehmannia. In addition to the shade concern, I was worried it would be too high coverage or too dewy for my liking based on some descriptions of the product. It boasts patented “Slim Fit High Coverage” claiming to “conceal discoloration & uneven tone as it lightly applies to skin...” Fancy descriptors can be really confusing, & often cushion compacts offer lighter coverage in general, so I still decided to try this based on so many 5⭐️ reviews on their site. I was looking for an easy to blend, light-med coverage, that would even out my tone & add radiance... this is IT! So natural!✨ I couldn’t be happier with the formula! It has a lovely soft herbal scent with a hint of light florals. So pleasant, not strong. Hydration wise, it’s very comfortable to wear & apply. My skin felt moisturized all day wearing this. After 5 hours, I could have used a light touch up, but nothing major (check all photos) I didn’t lose any coverage, just got a little shiny around my nose, quite normal for me. I don’t think the shade is that wrong either, it blends so well, & I hate looking pink! The finish is perfect, smooth & radiant, not overly matte, so I feel healthy & glowy! i💚the refill concept♻️
My 2 mood booster go to colors #cheriepartner
What better way to bring would your makeup look and to complete it but using the two colors I’m obsessed with and use all the time. I love dark colors my skin is pretty fair/light so when I wear my #Elf - Lip lacquer moody[products]#[FiveStars] it brings out the brightness of my skin and looks complete I already feel beautiful in these colors I love to wear my elf lip gloss during the day for a simple but soft look and it’s also perfect for fall now that fall is here I can’t get enough of these colors The texture is so soft and smooth it applies easy and doesn’t feel too sticky and doesn’t dry out my lips
✨ picking your BB/CC/tinted moisturizer
Tinted moisturizers (TMs), BB creams, and CC creams are all light coverage alternatives to foundation. But what’s the difference between each, and how do you pick the right one? ⭐️ TM, BB, or CC? ⭐️ TM- What it sounds like. Your standard daily moisturizer, just with a little color. Often light coverage. BB Cream- stands for Beauty or Blemish balm. Combines moisturizer, primer, SPF, and tint. It’s an all-in-one product that’s usually light-medium coverage. CC Cream- stands for Color Correcting. Contains pigments/undertones to correct redness or other discoloration. Coverage varies. Any of these creams can be dewy or matte. They’re usually not full coverage- but in my experience, TMs are usually the lightest coverage and CCs are the thickest. ⭐️ TIPS TO PICK YOURS ⭐️ 🌸 Determine your skin type and concern. Do you want dewy skin, and minimal coverage? Go for Glossier. - Perfecting Skin Tint Medium-full coverage with SPF that looks like natural skin? it Cosmetics - CC+ Cream with SPF 50+ An affordable, all in one tint with primer? MAYBELLINE - Dream Fresh BB Cream 8-In-1 Skin Perfector SPF 30 That same thing, but with a matte finish? MAYBELLINE - Dream Matte BB Cream SPF15 Personally, I’ve been using the PHYSICIANS FORMULA - Super BB All-In-1 Beauty Balm Cream for a year. My skin is sensitive, and it gives light coverage while looking like your skin. You can see how it covers my under eye circles and minor blemishes on the 3rd pic. That’s without concealer. It has never broken me out and it lasts all day. It only needs minimal touch ups for shine. It’s a gel that flows out of the bottle without spilling. I love how easy it is to work with and it has moisturizers like Shea Butter and Willow extract for skincare! BONUS: I tried the L'ORÉAL - Studio Secrets Magic Skin Beautifier B.B. Cream I liked it, though its odd- it comes out white and has little pigment bubbles that burst as you blend it into your skin. Texture is liquidy, but the finish on my face was nice and satiny. ⭐️ PICKING THE RIGHT COLOR ⭐️ 🌸 If you can, match within the same brand. Some brands use the same names for their BB cream and foundation lines. This saves a lot of hassle- with Too Faced, for example, I figured out I was usually their “Vanilla” shades. Sadly, TMs, BBs, and CC creams usually have less colors to choose from. But Colourpop, Black Radiance, and Laneige all have wide shade ranges. 🌸 If not, use a foundation matrix Temptalia, Sephora, and Findation all have a way for you to put your current foundation and find its match in other brands! This helps you break it down to not just get the right lightness, but also your undertones. 🌸 Mix & match. Truth is, there’s no perfect match for our skin. But the TMs, BBs, and CC can be mixed with other pigments to get the perfect match.
🗡Battle of The 4 Peter Thomas Roth Masks
I love masks, they add an extra luxury step to the routine, they make everything more fun and interesting and they can actually help the skin. On a recent trip to Sephora, I grabbed the Petter Thomas Roth Made to Mask Kit. I have never owned anything from this brand before so I wanted to give it a try. I will be giving my honest review on each of these 4 masks: PETER THOMAS ROTH - Irish Moor Mud Purifying Black Mask 🖤What it is: A hydrating mask with Irish moor mud that helps draw out dirt, oil, and impurities as it delivers moisture and vitamins. I left this on for 10 minutes and my skin looked and felt really clean and soft. This mask is not drying its soft and it doesn't have any particular scent. I love this mask. PETER THOMAS ROTH - 24K Gold Mask Pure Luxury Lift & Firm Mask 💛What it is: A luxurious treatment mask with 24k and colloidal gold to lift and firm the look of skin while imparting an opulent glow. I used this mask for 10 minutes. It is soft and looks kinda cool. Would I repurchase this? No. This mask didn't really do anything to my skin other than make it extra oily. My mom said I looked really oily after I washed it off. Also, it is really hard to take off due to the consistency. It is very gooey. It felt like a gremlin spit on me (sorry) PETER THOMAS ROTH - Pumpkin Enzyme Mask Enzymatic Dermal Resurfacer 🧡What it is: A three-in-one skin resurfacer that exfoliates, peels, and visibly polishes. When I put this on for the first time I had to wash it off inmediatly as it burned my skin. I am very sensitive to peeling solutions (even at the dermatologists peeling) But I wanted to give it a another chance so I waited days for my skin to heal and put it on again for only 7 minutes. I only put it on my chin and forehead because my cheeks are too sensitive for this. This time I felt a little burning sensation that went away in a few minutes so I could handle it. My skin felt extremely soft and clean after washing it off. I will continue to use this with caution. I also loveeee the smell PETER THOMAS ROTH - Cucumber Gel Mask Extreme Detoxifying Hydrator 💚The winner and my favorite from the 4. What it is: An ultra-gentle gel mask that soothes and hydrates dry skin with botanical extracts of cucumber, papaya, chamomile and more. This mask feels amazing on the skin. It is very cooling (I put it in the fridge sometimes) My skin feels so soft and hydrated after I use it without looking oily. I like how the first ingredients are the cucumber, papaya and chamomile extracts. This mask is the winner as it really feels like luxury step. I don't feel the need to go to the spa with this mask! 💚1st place: Cucumber Gel Mask 🖤2nd place: Irish Moor Mud Purifying Black Mask 🧡3rd place: Pumpkin Enzyme Mask 💛4th place: 24k Gold Mask
