Anti-aging Routine for your 20’s
If you ever wondered when is a good time to start your anti-aging skincare routine, your 20’s is the best time to start implementing one. I know you’re thinking my 20’s? Isn’t that too early? I just graduated college, or I am just beginning my new career. If you want to help prevent the aging process, your early to mid-20’s is an ideal time to start. I have come up with the things you should and shouldn’t do in your 20’s to serve you as an anti-aging guide. In your 20’s, your skin cell turnover decreases by as much as 28% in comparison to your teen years. (Cell turnover is a key component in keeping your skin youthful.) Every decade after your 20’s, expect cell turnover rates to decrease even more. The key to minimizing fine lines and wrinkles is by taking the proper measures to prevent effects of aging. Below I list 9 anti-aging regimen tips. APPLY YOUR SUNSCREENI cannot stress this enough. With Melanoma on the rise, it is extremely important to take preventative measures while you are young in order to reduce your risk of developing skin cancer. Sunscreen is also crucial to prevent hyper-pigmentation, which is when the skin develops darker patches of skin due to excess melanin production. Therefore, it is important to implement sunscreen in your daily skincare routine to help protect against the sun’s harmful ultraviolet UVA and UVB rays. Without daily usage of sunscreen, your skin can also start to develop a wide array of issues like aging, hyper pigmentation and sun spots. So steer clear from tanning beds and laying in the sun and skipping sunscreen while you are tanning. DRINK WATERIt is so important to drink plenty of water during the day. It is recommended to drink 8 glasses of water each day. I know in my 20’s, I used to consume lots of caffeine to help me get through long college days, but this habit will cause dehydrated skin and acne. Water helps flush out bacteria and toxins from your skin. Hope that convinces you start drinking more H2O!!GET PLENTY OF RESTIt is recommended to get 7-8 hours of sleep each day. Not only will you feel energized in the morning, but your skin will thank you. When we sleep, our skin cells regenerate and increase hydration levels to help balance the skin’s moisture content. This will help contribute to healthier and firmer skin.DO NOT PICK AT IMPERFECTIONSMany people suffer from adult acne in their 20’s. I know it can be tempting to pick at your zits, but please resist the urge to do so. Make sure you visit your dermatologist if you have moderate to severe acne. He or she can recommend the best treatment plan for your skin and write up a topical acne medication to help clear your skin. If your acne is mild, you can visit a local esthetician, and he or she can do extractions and facials to help clear your blackheads or breakouts. Please note, popping your pimples or picking at your skin can cause more acne breakouts, scarring, and inflammation. By picking at your skin, you are only pushing the bacteria deeper in your pores. Don’t be surprised if more zits or pimples show up soon after in the same spot. Plus, who wants to deal with the nasty scars that leaves behind? START USING MOISTURIZERIt is beneficial to start using a moisturizer in your early 20’s. Be sure to use the right kind for your skin type. It is important to use it under the eyes and around the mouth or anywhere you experience dryness. Incorporating moisturizer in your early to mid-20’s will help slow down the aging process in the long run and prevent your skin from producing excess oils to compensate for the lack of moisture.WASH YOUR FACE 1-2 TIMES PER DAYAlways make sure you cleanse your face using an appropriate cleanser for your skin type 1-2 times per day. Not washing your face daily, or going to sleep with your makeup on can cause your pores to become clogged. Throughout the day, our skin gets dirty with oil, dead skin cells, and toxins. Therefore, it’s crucial to wash your face at least once or twice a day (depending on your skin type) to prevent the harbor of bacteria and/or acne breakouts.TAKE A DAILY MULTIVITAMINIt is crucial to take your multivitamin daily. According to Skinhealth.com, “Research suggests that some vitamins might play a key role in skin health.” Vitamins help strengthen the skin’s immune system and build skin collagen. Many multivitamins contain vitamins A, B, C, D, and E, which are all essential in maintaining overall skin health.FOLLOW A HEALTHY DIET“You are what you eat.” I am sure you heard this saying before. What you take in will manifest on the outside. Nonetheless, preventative measures such as a healthier diet can clear blemishes in the long run. Consuming too much junk or processed food can harm skin’s collagen and elastin, causing premature wrinkles. Refined carbohydrates are absorbed into the bloodstream and thus cannot be filtered out into the cells. This causes the levels of insulin to rise which is not good for those with acne. Make sure to maintain a healthy diet filled with fruits, vegetables and antioxidants. FOLLOW A PROPER SKINCARE ROUTINESo much of our skincare habits can affect how our skin looks today. Using the wrong skincare products for our skin type—It is essential you determine your proper skin type so you can use the right skincare to address your skin concerns. Other bad habits include over-exfoliation or over-use of products. Over exfoliation (exfoliating your skin more than 2-3 times a week) can dry out your skin and cause skin irritation. Be sure you are applying your skincare-products in the correct order. If you don’t apply your skincare products in the correct order, you will honestly waste your time…and money (who wants that?). I know what you’re thinking—why would anyone take advice from me, considering that I already have straight hair? Here’s why—even though my hair is longer now, I used to have it cut in a blunt bob that I love straightening to keep it looking super polished and styled. So, here’s all the mistakes I learned NOT to make when it came to straightening hair. 🚨 Mistake 1: Not sectioning your hair. Sectioning your hair makes it easier to focus on a smaller part of your hair at a time for a better result! I used to think that sectioning wasn’t necessary, but when I started taking the extra effort to do it, my hair looked so much better. 🚨 Mistake 2: Taking too big of a section to straighten at once—the heat from your straightener won’t be as effective over too much hair, and lead to potentially more damage over time as you have to keep going over the same section again and again. 🚨 Mistake 3: Using too high of a heat. You don’t need to use the maximum heat on hair! Yes, a heat protectant will help protect your hair from the heat, but it’s not a free pass to use the highest heat possible. It’s important to minimize any damage to your hair! I only use my straightener on medium/high heat. 🚨 Mistake 4: Not running a comb through your hair before straightening. Even though my hair is straight, it can tangle easily which means that it won’t pass through the straightener properly, leaving me with a burned tangle! Some people prefer to run the comb after the straightener, but either way I think it’s a great step to ensuring hair is perfectly straight and styled. This easy dutch braid is my go to for a quick, fun look! Plus it's super versatile - I use it as the base for the three looks in this video. I have thick, curly hair. This style works the best for me on my day 2 or 3 hair - this way it requires very little styling! Here's a quick how to: 1. Part your hair into two rows on the top of your head, this is where your braids will go! 2. Dutch braid (or French braid) these two rows. Both of these braids are easy! Simply start a normal three strand braid, as you braid add small pieces of hair into each strand. 3. From here have fun with it! You can leave these two braids out, add them into a ponytail, go with one top-knot style bun at the top of your head, or go with my favorite style which is the two fun buns! Products Used: ￼IGK - Rich Kid Coconut Oil Gel this medium hold gel works well for my second day hair. It isn't strong enough for me to use on my wash and go days, but works really well when I want to restyle or change up my style.
