6 travel tips for people with Afros

Hopping on a plane and taking a trip around the world can be an exciting and rewarding experience. It will allow you to see a multitude of different places, experience dozens of different foods, and meet many different people. For most travelers, hair care doesn’t factor into their plans beyond packing travel containers of their favorite shampoo and conditioner.
However, if you’re sporting a natural, kinky textured afro, then you can’t avoid thinking about your hair-care plans while you’re on the road. Traveling with natural hair doesn’t have to be a struggle, but if you don’t think ahead of time about what products you want to use or when you will wash your hair, then you may find yourself in a bind.
  • Buy all your products ahead of time. Because not every country is going to have a plethora of natural hair-care products available to you, it’s important to make sure you pack your favorite products before you leave. You can purchase new bottles of your favorite shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in products and pack them safely in your suitcase, so you always have the perfect products for your hair.
  • Plan out when you’re going to make space for washing. Wash day for people with kinky textured hair takes a little bit longer than thirty minutes in the shower. For a lot of people, it takes the entire day, so if you’re traveling for more than a week, then it’s important to make sure you make time and space for your hair care routine. Also, knowing how long you’ll be gone will dictate whether you stay in a shared hotel with other people or if you spring for a private bathroom, so your wash day won’t be interrupted, nor will you disrupt others.
  • Check the weather. It’s important to know if you’re going to be traveling to a dry climate or wet climate because this will affect the way your hair behaves when you wear it down. If you’re a person who loves wearing your natural hair Wild and Free, then you want to know if it’s going to be crazy by the end of the day or if it will need more moisture.
  • Consider a protective style for the length of your trip. On the other hand, if you don’t want to deal with your hair every single day while you’re on your trip, you can consider keeping your hair in a protective style the whole time. A protective style can be as simple as packing a couple of wigs or twisting your hair. If you’re going on a trip that is less than two weeks long, then you can leave your protective style in for the entire duration of your trip. However, if you are going to be gone for longer than two weeks, you should squeeze in a wash day to keep your hair clean and healthy between protective styles.
  • Have a back-up plan. No matter what you plan for, it’s important to have a back-up plan. For example, what if you are traveling to an ordinarily warm and dry place, and it decides to rain for the entire week? Or, what if you plan to wear wigs during your trip, and the climate turns out to be too hot and muggy to bother with something on top of your head? Keep your back-up plan simple, like sticking to a protective style such as halo braids or twists, but make sure you have one.
  • Don’t forget your satin bonnet or pillowcase. Finally, and most importantly, make sure you pack your satin bonnet or satin pillowcase. If you’ve been natural for a long time, then you have been working towards having long and healthy hair for a while, and you don’t want one little vacation to ruin your progress. Forgetting your satin pillowcase or satin bonnet means you may be sleeping on a rough cotton pillowcase, which will add frizz and split ends to your beautiful hair.
  • If you’re not interested in doing anything to your hair for the duration of your trip, then you can always cut it. There’s nothing wrong with undergoing the big chop right before you jump on a plane and have the time of your life jet-setting around the world. If you’re not interested in cutting your hair, then keep these six tips in mind to make your on the road hair care routine just as easy as the routine you have at home.

Hair Growth Journey - What I’ve learned!
Hair Growth Journey - What I’ve learned!
My hair growth journey and some tips! These photos were taken exactly 12 months apart. This is about 8 inches of growth which includes 2 salon trims/cuts and 1 self-done quarantine trim. And it feels really healthy. 2 years ago my hair was about shoulder length. Between the nape of my neck and top of shoulders is a bad length for me, it flips weird, it tangles - I hate it. It also seemed to be thinning in some places and I was shedding hair more than normal (I do have autoimmune stuff). I like to do ponytails and braids and I just couldn’t do anything with it. I wanted it to grow and it just wasn’t happening! I tried hair growth shampoo. I tried tons of conditioners. I tried leave-in treatments. I tried DIY recipes. People always ask so - Let me tell you what worked! 1. Obviously, take it easy with heat styling and coloring! If you must heat style your hair, use a good heat protectant EVERY time. I blow dry my hair maaaybe 3 times a year. When I want waves I do braids or twists. I have perfected the art of the heatless hairstyle!! And when I want to change up my color, I now use OVERTONE - Coloring Conditioner or KERACOLOR - Color + Clenditioner . Obviously this won’t work for all colors but it’s something to try. 2. Quit with the Dry Shampoo - or at least cut down! This was hard for me. I have oily hair & generally only shampoo 2 or 3 times a week. I was using dry shampoo for DAYS at a time sometimes. A very light first day dry shampoo is fine. But if you start sleeping with it in and you are using it 2 and 3 days in a row, it’s clogging up your scalp and can make your hair prone to breakage. Then you have to use more clarifying shampoos or shampoo twice for your hair to feel clean - and you just defeated the whole thing. 3. Scalp massages!!! Doooo it!!!! I learned how well this works after buying a “hair growth” shampoo and was shocked at how fast my hair grew. BUT the directions said to put the shampoo on and massage it into your scalp for TWO to THREE minutes. I did it religiously. And it worked so well. So I started doing it with other shampoos and then added an every other night hair oil massage to the mix. THIS really kicks your hair growth and hair health into high gear. Use the extra oil on your hands on the ends of your hair for extra conditioning. 4. Hair, skin & nails vitamins!! There are tons of brands. I’ve used these NATURE'S BOUNTY - Optimal Solutions Hair, Skin and Nails Gummies for about 2 years. I’ve tried a few others mixed in but these are inexpensive, I like the taste, they feel like a treat, and I think they have really contributed to my hair, skin, and nail health. It’s about personal preference I think. I’m not the best eater in the world sometimes and I’m wholly addicted to sugar! If you aren’t one of those Whole 30 diet people who eats like a saint - you should get some vitamins like these. Hope you find this helpful!!! 💙

    Glow Recipe Fruit Babies 👍👎?
    Glow Recipe Fruit Babies 👍👎?
I bought the GLOW RECIPE - Fruit Babies set so I could try out several products. First of all, the minis are SO TINY for the price. In last place is the cult favorite GLOW RECIPE - Watermelon + AHA Glow Sleeping Mask I don’t get it, I can’t make it stay on my face? Idk what I’m doing wrong but I tried it over and under moisturizer, over and under oil, mixed with oil, nothing worked to keep it from peeling off. Its a gooey stringy texture like a peel off mask that won’t absorb into my skin at all! Anyone else have this problem??? I feel like I’m crazy! Oh also, it has SUCH A STRONG SCENT. Like ok some people like fragrance but this just smelled fake. Next GLOW RECIPE - Blueberry Bounce Gentle Cleanser Bouncy? Yes. Its a very jelly texture. Gentle? No. I found this cleanser to be super drying! Maybe I was using too much, but the texture made it weirdly hard to spread over your face. Again, the scent was too strong and too fake. The GLOW RECIPE - Watermelon Glow Pink Juice Moisturizer I didn’t have high hopes for because it says for oily or combo skin, and I have combo-dry. It isn’t a terrible moisturizer, it didn’t pill, but it wasn’t hydrating enough for me and the smell was too strong. However, I can see the redeeming qualities in this one for oily skinned folks. In third place was the GLOW RECIPE - Watermelon Glow PHA+BHA Pore-Tight Toner I didn’t expect to like this but I actually really liked the concept. Getting your acids in early to tone and minimize pores seems like a decent idea. I was also surprised that it wasn’t super drying which I assume is the cactus water? For me, the big downside again was fragrance, but I liked it enough that Im looking for alternatives. I am trying out the COSRX - BHA Blackhead Power Liquidwhich has similar properties and texture but no fragrance! GLOW RECIPE - Banana Soufflé Moisture Cream Seems weird to put such a tiny sample in second place, but after two uses I could really feel the hydration. I wasn’t keen on the fake banana scent, but it dissipated much faster than the watermelon so it was tolerable. Would definitely be open to trying a travel size of this. Finally the hit! GLOW RECIPE - Avocado Melt Retinol Eye Sleeping Mask This is my first eye cream (so keep in mind lack of experience) and I was blown away. I was so scared of the retinol but the combination of the heavy moisturizers and the encapsulation made it very soothing! I went ahead and bought the full size as my new staple night eye cream until I go test out others! Final verdict: overhyped. The watermelon and blueberry lines were NOT for me. The banana? Maybe. The avocado is a yes! What do other dry/sensitive people think? Is the brand tailored to oily skin and not for us? Opinions about whether I should try the banana cream and the retinol face sleeping mask?

Ever since I’ve added these two new products, I’ve noticed a couple new breakouts in places i’ve never experienced!!! They are red painful pimples too. Two on my forehead (I never get them there) , one on the outside of my nostril (i never get them there either), and the weirdest singular pimple on my NECK! Both of these products I have used on my face and neck, however, I’m not sure what product or ingredient is causing the sudden breakout!! Or is it just purging??? Help!!!!!! Did anyone else experience this with these products??? COSRX - Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence Murad - Nutrient-Charged Water Gel
