How to cut your hair like a pro at home

Jul. 21, 2020
After what feels like a lifetime of social distancing, you're probably starting to miss your hair stylist about as much as you miss your best friend. We don’t know how long physical isolation could continue for so if you want to keep your hair looking fresh, you're inevitably going to have to cut it yourself. I’m guessing you’re reading this because you’re not a professional hairdresser and you’re certainly not qualified but desperate times call for desperate measures, right?
Cutting hair straight can be simple, but there are a few bad habits that can create gradations and prevent that neat, blunt, straight-across cut. If this is your first time cutting hair, be sure to invest in a good pair of hairdressing shears, and cut off less than you think you want. Remember, you can always cut more if you want it shorter, but if you cut too much you can't add hair back!
So before you reach for the scissors and start snipping read on for a step by step on how to actually cut your hair straight. We’ve sourced all the best tricks for trimming your hair at home – ones that will keep you from giving yourself a cut you'll regret. It's easy to run into your kitchen and grab the scissors you use to open those online delivery orders but those really aren't good for cutting hair. So before you start your quarantine cut, get yourself a pair of quality shears.
Top tips
Invest in a pair of styling shears.
Put down the kitchen scissors! The dull edges could potentially give you even more split ends and do you really want food remnants in your mane? Instead, invest in a pair of razor-sharp styling shears designed specifically for the task. This will give you the best-looking cut and the healthiest hair possible.
Cut less than you think you need to.
You can always take more hair off, but you can't add back what you've already chopped! If you're cutting your hair while it's wet, remember it will look even shorter once it dries.
What you will need
  • A hair tie
  • A pair of scissors for hair
  • A brush
  • A handheld mirror
Make sure the hair tie is made from a soft fabric, something that grabs the hair too tight will make this more tricky than it needs to be. It's also a good idea to use a hand held mirror and large wall mirror so that you can see what you're doing in the back.
10 easy steps to follow
  • Start with damp hair.
  • Comb through your hair and remove all knots and tangles.
  • Part your hair down the middle and pull it back into a low ponytail at the nape of your neck - secure with your hair tie. The ponytail should be neat, smooth and fully secured.
  • Secure another hair tie a few inches below the first one.
  • Hold the ponytail between your fingers where you want to cut it. Make a v-shape with your middle fingers, then close around the ponytail. Slide your fingers further down so you have room to make adjustments
  • Cut the ponytail below your fingers, slowly and carefully (always cut less than you think)
  • Remove the hair tie and check the cut/shape. Turn around so your back is facing the mirror and hold another mirror up in front of you.
  • To ensure your hair is as straight as possible, part your hair down the centre and drape your each half of your hair over each shoulder towards the front. Pinch your hair between your fingers again. Pull your fingers downwards, angling them slightly. Slide your fingers down the length of the hair section to where you want to cut your hair.
  • Angle your fingers upwards slightly, so that your fingertips are pointing up towards your shoulder. This will allow you to cut the hair from the back of your head shorter; when you brush your hair out, it will be the same length.
  • Cut your hair below your fingers using the same method as before. Keep your hand and hair close against your shoulder as you cut. Repeat the process for the other side of your hair.

    CMON MADDIE..... Really ? 😒
    CMON MADDIE..... Really ? 😒
okay so i’m sorry for the light this week but i’m working on a work station. However this Morphe Maddie palette isn’t doing it for the me. In my opinion I believe to pull a good palette together is blend ability and good shimmer or glitters. The shimmers on the is so trash 🗑 sorry to say. i literally had to dig for a good creamy shine. However it isn’t a complete miss. The other colors did have some good pigment and my fav shade is the black shade. It was really dark and blendable. I would probably recommend this to someone with more fair skin because they pigments and shimmers would work better in their favor. Have you used this palette if yes tell me all about below, if no would you still wanna try it out and why ?
    Preserving My Curls Overnight
    Preserving My Curls Overnight
This is how I preserve most of my hairstyles overnight! I hear many people complain about how their bonnet or scarf is always falling off their head and ending up on the floor once they wake up, I was having the same issue! That is when I decided to create a wrap that would stay on throughout the night while protecting your curls. I hand make them myself and sale on Etsy (link in my bio) if you are interested! 😊
