6 ways to straighten your hair – without heat!
You may have tried straightening your hair with hot styling tools like blow-dryers, ceramic straighteners and hot curling irons only to find your hair devoid of moisture and easy to break afterwards. You don’t have to anymore! In this article, you’ll find the 6 top tips for making your hair straight and glossy without having to apply a bit of heat.
These tricks work best for those of you with fine, slightly wavy hair. Other hair types may find achieving perfectly straight hair a bit more challenging. While it’d be a bit unrealistic to expect very curly hair to fall straight as a pencil without heat, using these methods could still help make your hair straighter, just with a slight curl.
The cold blowout
What you may not have known before is that what you were able to do by blowing your hair with hot air, you can actually also achieve by blasting cool air instead! Hot air was been shown to damage the hair shaft, whilst cool air doesn’t cause as much damage, so this trick is well worth a try.
Let your hair dry three-quarters of the way, and, blowing as you normally do in sections, just switch your blow-dryer to cool and blow along the entire length of your hair, maintaining a six inch distance. For even better effects, apply a straightening serum or spray-on-leave-in conditioner afterwards.
Grab your roller pins and a satin turban, because you’re about to learn how to wrap your hair the right way!
First, find your parting and separate the two sides. Comb it out flat using a fine comb. Hold your hair taut and wrap it around to the other side of your head (so if it falls on the left side normally, wrap it over to the right side of your head) and secure tightly in place with bobby pins. Repeat this for each section of your hair and hold it in shape using your hair turban before going to sleep.
For visual learners, head over to YouTube and search “hair wrapping” for a galore of tutorial videos.
If you have medium to long hair and can get your hands on some jumbo sized rollers (at least 1 3/4 diameter), then you’re in luck – you can give yourself that slightly wavy and very voluminous look really easily, and most importantly, without heat. Once your hair is damp but not wet, divide it into medium sections and apply the rollers and leave them in for at least 4 hours. If you need to apply pins, a top tip is to apply it on the underside of the hair so that you don’t get visible creases.
Hair masks are great for giving your hair some deep conditioning so that you can nail that shiny, straight hair look. They work by restoring the protein to your hair, taking away the frizziness and curliness you’d otherwise get. You can make your own DIY hair mask using warmed coconut oil and almond oil, or with raw egg, manuka honey or even avocado.
Sleep with your hair wet
This one’s an easy one and requires no tools. Create a bun at the top of your head by simply tying a loose ponytail at the top of your head, and wrapping your hair around the ponytail. Secure the bun with a hair tie and you’re done!
To reduce friction against wet hair, you could consider treating yourself to a satin pillowcase – reducing friction also makes your hair appear straighter in the morning.
Apply essential oils
Essential oils are the perfect supplement once you’ve mastered the above tricks. Whether you’re cold blowing, hair wrapping, or using rollers, you can take a pick of essential oils to restore gloss to your hair and add a bit more weight to it, which can help the style hold for longer during the day. Good essential oils should seep into your hair follicles and repair the cells inside. Readily absorbed essential oils include: argan oil, coconut oil, macadamia oil and almond oil.
There are obviously tons of commercial products you can also use, which I haven’t touched on too much in this article. Maybe one for next time. What’s your favourite way of straightening your hair sans heat? Share with us in the comments section below!

Hyaluronic Acid 101 x DermDoctor
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a humectant that famously holds 1000 times its weight in water. It pulls in water from the environment and from the deeper layers of your skin. This ingredient seems to be ubiquitous in skincare products nowadays and it can be found in a lot of moisturizers. Benefits: -Immediately plumps the skin, softening fine lines and wrinkles -Hydrates the skin (specifically high-molecular-weight HA) -Assists in wound healing Dermatologist Tips: -Hyaluronic acid is your first step after cleansing -Must be applied to damp skin! -If you live in a dry climate, make sure to moisturize immediately after -Can be used once or twice a day -Safe to layer with most other skincare ingredients My Top Picks: VICHY - Minéral 89 Face Serum This contains a high-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid, which has moisturizing properties and sits on the surface of the skin without causing inflammation. It contains only 11 ingredients making it ideal for people with sensitive skin (like me). Also, Vichy’s proprietary volcanic water has actually been studied and proven to have skin protective and healing properties THE inkey LIST - Hyaluronic Acid Serum The price point here is unbeatable. Again, with a simple ingredient list, you’re unlikely to run into issues with allergy or irritation. This contains a multi-molecular-weight HA, which allows you reap additional benefits, in addition to hydration and plumping. This also has matrixyl 3000 peptide, which can stimulate collagen synthesis Neutrogena - Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Serum Both high and low-molecular weight hyaluronic acid for added benefits. This also contains glycerin (another amazing humectant) and vitamin B5 (an amazing anti-oxidant) NATURIUM - Quadruple Hyaluronic Acid Serum 5% A great option fragrance-free, cruelty-free option from Naturium! This contains multi-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid that hydrates, plumps, and repairs the skin. #CheriePartner
