Is your Curly Hair Damaged? Here’s how to FIX it!

Damaged curly hair can sneak up over time, or it can happen with one bad experience with a flat iron or a blow dryer. Either way, damage and dryness can completely ruin your curls. If your hair feels brittle and lifeless or will no longer hold its curl pattern, then you may be dealing with damaged hair.
Sometimes, dryness can be the cause of these symptoms, but if you wash and moisturize your hair and you’re still having the same problems, then you may be dealing with a bigger issue. In a lot of cases, fixing your hair care routine can reverse the damage done to it and prevent your hair from getting damaged in the future.
There are many things that can cause damage to your curly hair. Here are a few of the top culprits:
  • Too much heat. The most common cause for dry or damaged curly hair is using too much heat. If your blow-drying your hair every morning and straightening it regularly, then it will come to no surprise that your hair may lose its curl pattern and become weak and brittle.
  • Shampooing too frequently. Shampooing too often or with the wrong type of shampoo can also cause damage to your hair. Curly hair doesn’t need to be washed as often as other types of hair, and it does best with a sulfate-free shampoo.
  • Not protecting your hair at night. Curly hair can easily get trapped in the fibers of other natural fibers, such as cotton, which is usually used for bedding and pillowcases. Because of this, your hair can suffer from dryness, breakage, and frizziness if you don’t protect it adequately while you’re sleeping.
  • Rough styling. The last major way we damaged our hair regularly is by harsh styling. Styling your hair too tightly or changing your hairstyle too often can cause dryness and damage.
If you’ve committed some of these curly-hair sins, don’t panic! No one’s perfect, but it’s important that you end your bad habits and get on the path to having healthy curly hair ASAP. Here five ways to fix your damaged or dry curls:
  • Use gentle shampoos. The first step to fixing dry or damaged hair is to make sure you use the right products. Make sure your shampoo is sulfate-free and designed for curly hair, and make sure you have a deep conditioner and quality post-shampoo conditioner to make sure your hair is getting all the nutrients it needs.
  • Select low-maintenance or protective styles. It’s fun to play with our hair, especially when it feels hydrated and healthy, but it’s important to keep your hands out of your hair as much as possible. Your hands are dirty, and they can contribute to breakage and dryness if you spend too much time manipulating your hair. The best way to keep your hair looking and feeling great is by sticking to protective styles or low maintenance styles.
  • Keep your hair hydrated. Your hair needs regular maintenance, so if you feel like it’s been getting too dry before your wash day, consider rehydrating it through the week. You can do this by spritzing your hair with water and then adding a protective sealant, such as coconut oil or avocado oil, or you can rehydrate it with your leave-in conditioner.
  • Deep condition your hair regularly. If your hair is healing from a lot of damage or extreme dryness, then make sure you deep condition regularly. You can deep condition your hair before or after you shampoo it, and it should be done at least monthly. However, it’s best to deep condition your hair weekly. You can deep condition your hair with a special curly hair product designed for dry and damaged hair, or you can use your regular post-shampoo conditioner and let it sit in your hair for 15-30 minutes before rinsing it out.
  • Consider a “big chop”. Lastly, if you are still struggling with dry and damaged hair, or you don’t have the patience to nurse your hair back to life, then you can do a big chop. A “big chop” refers to cutting off a significant amount of damaged hair so you can start fresh with the healthy parts of your hair. Cutting off the damaged ends can do wonders for your hair. It can get rid of split ends, make your hair look and feel thicker, and it will be easier to establish a new hair care routine on healthy hair as opposed to damaged hair.
  • If you’re dealing with damaged or dry curly hair, it’s important to first evaluate your habits to make sure you aren’t unnecessarily causing damage to your hair. It’s possible to heal damaged or dry hair with a strict hair-care routine, but if you’re feeling overwhelmed or you want a fresh start, you can always cut your hair and start over again!

NEW FIND! And I’m pleasantly surprised!?
NEW FIND! And I’m pleasantly surprised!?
It was time to get a new moisturizer. I was currently using the HONEST - Hydrogel Cream paired with the PAULA'S CHOICE - Omega+ Complex Moisturizer , RADHA BEAUTY - Rosehip Oil , and timeless SKIN CARE - Squalane Oil 100% Pure because I have pretty dry skin. I love both of those moisturizers (although I’m not fond of all the Paula’s choice Omega+ complex moisturizer ingredients, but I loooooove the texture and feeling of it ) and love my oils (I won’t stop using the oils), but knew I needed a richer cream and also wanted to keep it down to just one cream, for time and my bank accounts sake. So if you’ve seen my last post, I was deciding between 3 brands but I couldn’t decide and was also nervous to try a new moisturizer, even though I knew I needed one, because I’m also acne prone so a new moisturizer to me was just terrifying lol. I was about to just get my usual HONEST - Hydrogel Cream because I knew it didn’t break me out and I like it a lot, although not quite as moisturizing as I need, it was on the safer side and I can’t imagine going a day without a moisturizer on this Sahara desert of a face!!! But then I discovered this brand I’ve never seen before? It’s called Awake Human. It’s not even a listing on Cherie for me to add the product! I read the ingredients and was intrigued (scroll through pics to see ingredients list), but because of my fear of new moisturizers, I was hesitant.. but I decided to bite the bullet because the ingredients looked amazing, was cheaper than Paula’s choice and the honest beauty’s moisturizer, but had the same amount of product. I received it a few days ago and I am in love!!!!! Soooooo rich and creamy and hydrating feeling, and it had the same smooth, rich, texture as the Paula’s Choice omega moisturizer, that I love so much!!! It comes in a nice little pump type of packaging, which I like. Keeps bacteria and gunk out. If you scroll through my pictures, you’ll see it. And a little bit goes a long way! The picture you see of the product on my fingers is the amount I use, but you can totally use less, especially if you have more oily or normal skin. I just like a lot of moisturizer! Lol I’ve noticed my face is much less dry feeling and looks smoother with less texture. I will keep you updated, but I think this is my new fave!!!! I’m so excited lol. Here the link the purchase: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NWXJYVK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_YHI-Fb9BRJKT0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 If you’re hesitant but intrigued like I was, I strongly encourage you to just try it. And if it happens that doesn’t work for your face, because remember, everyone is different and skincare is not a one size fits all, then it would most definitely be a really really nice hand cream, that would fit nicely in your bag. Have you heard of this brand before? And if so, have you used anything from them?
Which moisturizer is right for my skin type?
Which moisturizer is right for my skin type?
A little bit of moisturizing a day keeps the dry skin away! Moisturizing is crucial to a healthy skin barrier. All 𝗺𝗼𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗿𝘀 help with dry skin. Yet, not all moisturizers are created equal. So, how do you choose the 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗿 for your skin? I am breaking it down today for #WinterSkinReliefDay. In general, 𝗺𝗼𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗿𝘀 provide a little bit of water to the skin and contain a greasy substance that holds it in. 𝗠𝗼𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗿𝘀 are formulated in 𝟯 𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀: ✅ 𝗢𝗰𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀: greasy/oily and block the evaporation of water from your skin. 💦 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀: pull water into the top layer of your skin both from the air and from deeper layers of the skin. 🧖🏾‍♀️ 𝗘𝗺𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: not really moisturizering but rather to make the skin feel smooth by replacing absent skin the lipids and oils to fill in all the cracks on the skin, helping smooth out the surface of your skin and repair your skin’s barrier. Here is a cheat sheet to help you select the appropriate moisturizer for your skin. 𝗣𝗿𝗼 𝘁𝗶𝗽𝘀 📅 𝗠𝗼𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆, regardless of your skin type. Even oily skin needs moisturizing every day with the right type of moisturizer. Please avoid moisturizing reactively, aka moisturizering 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 when your skin is dry. 🚿 Always apply to 𝗱𝗮𝗺𝗽 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗻. P.S I keep my moisturizer in my shower to apply right after I towel off gently. 🔑 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗿. This is key for the winter 🥶 months. You need both a humectant which draw moisture to the skin and occlusive ingredients which keep water from evaporating off of your skin. 🌓𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗮 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗿. This is really important in the winter if you are using humectant heavy moisturizer. The dry air can pull the water out of your skin. Sounds crazy right? 🚫𝗔𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴. Even if you do not have sensitive skin. Fragrance and coloring are just a set up for possible irritation/allergy and no one has time for that. 🦶🏾 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗼𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗸. They too need some TLC. #skincaretips #moisturizer #skincareroutine #skincareproducts #dermatologist #dermatology

i tried covergirl’s clean fresh line...
... and i have a lot to say! it has been ages since i posted a detailed review of a product, so we might as well just dive in! COVERGIRL - Clean Fresh Cooling Glow Highlighter Stick the first product from this collection that i tried was their cooling glow stick. i own shades “opal dreams”, which is a nice opal pale-pink shade, as well as “so gilty” which is a more warm-toned golden nude shade. they are super cooling and have a nice natural sheen to them which can be emphasized by topping with a powder highlight. i find myself reaching for this a lot to make my complexion dewy and nice! COVERGIRL - Clean Fresh Hydrating Concealer i think people who do exclusively natural makeup will love this product. it is creamy and suitable for drier complexions (unlike my own), but the coverage simply isn’t enough for me. i would consider it light-medium, but i do usually choose the higher-coverage (but MUCH DRIER) COVERGIRL - TruBlend Undercover Concealer . COVERGIRL - Clean Fresh Pressed Powder i like this powder. i own the translucent shade and the flashback is nothing crazy. i do find i have to use a lot more of it than i did when i used to use the MAYBELLINE - Fit Me Matte + Poreless Powder. COVERGIRL - Clean Fresh Skin Milk Foundation i like this foundation as well. it does have a unique smell which may trouble some but the coverage is nice and the finish could be described as satin. people either love or hate this foundation, but i think it is great and will certainly repurchase it! OVERALL.... i love this line and i think it is great for everyday natural makeup looks. my favourite is easily the cooling glow stick and least favourite being the hydrating concealer. overall, i love using all of these products together and i will likely repurchase many of them!!⛅️💗 i hope you enjoyed ;) please be sure to follow here and on my IG @chloebrk.mua #cheriecreator
