7 Tips for Caring for Your Curly Hair

Curly hair is unique and common, but it gets far less love from the beauty community when it comes to knowing how to care for this type of hair. Curly hair bends and coils and can easily knot on itself. For all of these reasons, curly hair can be fragile and delicate. It also has a tendency to be dry because your scalp’s natural oils can have a hard time getting all the way to the ends of your hair.
When it comes to caring for your curly hair, a simple shampoo, rinse, condition, rinse, and repeat routine isn’t going to work for you. Your hair care routine will be completely different, and there are a lot more things to think about when maintaining your curly hair as opposed to someone with straight or wavy hair.
  • Be patient. The most important thing to remember when dealing with curly hair is that you need to be patient. Curly hair will not always be quick to style, and wash days can take a lot longer than one session in the shower. Set aside some time to deep condition, shampoo, and style your hair without rushing, so your hair can receive the treatment and care it needs.
  • Use your fingers to detangle your hair. The next step is to put away the brush. Trying to comb out tangles from curly hair only leads to more frizz and broken ends. If you want your curly hair to be healthy and shiny, then stick to finger detangling and protective styles to prevent your hair from getting knotted.
  • Stretch out your wash days. Because curly hair is prone to dryness rather than being too oily, you can stand to stretch out the wash days from every other day to every couple of days or even once a week. Stretching out the time between your washes will protect your hair from unnecessary friction and allow for your scalp’s natural oils to get further down your hair strand. In between washes, it’s okay to rinse your hair and reapply conditioner to make sure it stays moisturized and hydrated throughout the week.
  • Embrace your wash-day routine. Developing a wash day routine will make caring for your curly hair much easier, and there are some necessary steps to make your curls pop. First, you deep condition your hair, wet it thoroughly, and then shampoo your scalp with a sulfate-free shampoo. After you have shampooed your hair, use a post-shampoo conditioner and then a leave-in conditioner last. If your hair is long, consider washing your hair in sections to prevent more tangles and to make your wash day routine faster.
  • Use a leave-in conditioner. For us curly girls, there’s nothing wrong with rehydrating your hair in between wash sessions. You should always use a leave-in conditioner after you wash your hair, but you can also reapply your leave-in conditioner when your hair starts feeling dry. Invest in a lightweight, water-based leave-in conditioner that you can apply every morning before styling your hair.
  • Skip using heat. It may be tempting to blow dry your hair on occasion or flat iron it when you’re looking for a new style, but heat and curly hair don’t go together. If you want to do the best for your hair, consider tossing your blow dryer in the same drawer as your brush and letting your hair dry naturally as often as possible.
  • Sleep with a satin bonnet or pillowcase. Finally, a solid nighttime routine is just as important as your daytime routine, and if you are not sleeping with a satin bonnet or pillowcase, you’re doing your hair no favors. Rough cotton pillowcases will cause your hair to tangle and knot on itself because it can get caught in the cotton fibers. Investing in a satin bonnet or satin pillowcase can prevent frizz, single strand knots, and improve the general health of your hair.
  • Curly hair is beautiful, but caring for curly hair is a lot different than caring for straight or wavy hair. For one thing, wash days for your curly hair take a lot more time than for your straight haired counterparts. However, taming your curls is easier than you think. Instituting even a few of these six tips will help you on your healthy hair journey.

This past week has been rather hard and long for me. I ultimately decided to get back on track with my wellness plan. My main wellness goal for 2021, is to indulge in myself more. I definitely am a firm believe in “as within, so without”. I started my day with: #Four Sigmatic - Mushroom Elixir Mix with Chaga[products]#[FiveStars] I have been getting back into adaptogen and herbal medicine. What we put into our bodies is just as important as what goes on the outside. Adaptogens are apart of ancient medicinal traditions traced all over the world. I also drink Tulsi “Holy Basil” Tea. If you need a pick me up or emotional boost I highly recommend! SUNDAY RILEY - U.F.O. Ultra-Clarifying Face Oil is my treatment of choice I used during the day. Do not be afraid to use salicylic acid during the day. I applied plenty of sunscreen afterwards as well! This is a GODSEND for clearing up acne and acne scarring. It’s by far the best acne treatment I’ve tried and its mostly due to the immediate results I get. This is a dry oil, so it should be used before a heavy moisturizer or sunscreen. THE BODY SHOP - Spa of the World Thai Makrut Lime Firming Oil is a staple in my night time routine. When I want to relax and really unwind I use a body roller with this oil. It smells like a fresh key lime pie and it’s so hydrating. This is great for firming, especially when paired with a body tool. What do you do for wellness?

I have been loving the brand Truly lately ✨ I recently purchased this: 🍃TRULY - CBD Jelly Toning Solution 🍃 And it’s by far one of my favorite toners. Ingredients: 💚100MG CBD 💚Glycolic Acid 💚Tea Tree Oil 💚Organic Aloe 💚Rose Petal Extract This brand is also: 💚Vegan 💚Cruelty Free 💚Clean I use this every other night and it as tremendously helped my skin barrier and acne. I was really concerned about the glycolic acid irritating or drying my skin but it didn’t at all 🤩 I highly recommend this to combo and oily , acne prone skin. This will be a toner I keep in my night routine. I got it from Ulta (of course) for $24 (I paid $15 after coupons) Do you use CBD products? 🍃

Thank you @cheriefor this amazing gift 🤩 “buh-koo-chee-all” HERBIVORE - Bakuchiol Anti-Aging Serum I’ve already become a diehard Herbivore lover. So to receive this beauty was super exciting. When I started my acne journey on Cherie I was (and still am) a Differin Acne Gel stan. This was my choice of retinol and I wanted it strong to treat acne and boost my cellular turnover. Now that my acne is currently under control and it’s getting hot again, I definitely want something smooth and gentle. Bakuchiol is a gentler alternative to the very popular ingredient retinol. So essentially you’ll get overall youthful results for your skin. I haven’t tested this on my acne theory yet, but overall my face has been smooth and irritation free. This serum does not have a smell which I love for products of this caliber. I also love that it’s light and not drying at all. I use this at night and since i have a tolerance to retinol I use it every night. I haven’t been using it long enough to see results (about 12 weeks) but I definitely can’t wait to finish this. Have you tried Bakuchiol?
    At Home Exfoliating Facial ✨✨
    At Home Exfoliating Facial ✨✨
So I recently received the Mimi Co Exfoliating Wand via IG PR. I couldn’t wait to do a full facial and I decided to do it tonight. Order: I purchased a steamer from Amazon for $23 and I’m obsessed with it (DM me for product info). I started with UpCircle - Cleansing Face Balm With Apricot Powder As my oil cleanse to get my sunscreen from today off and any other oils and dirts. INDIE LEE - Purifying Face Wash This cleanser is perfect for getting dirts and oils from skin as well. It’s not drying and it’s totally worth it! I paired it with a face cleansing scrub brush, I also purchased from Amazon. I love it and I paid around $20 for it as well! It doubles the vibration frequency put out by Foreo. CLARISMA - Namaste Glow Energizing Face Mask This was the mask I chose for the enzyme properties. This breaks down dirts and oils in pores and dead skin cells. I also steamed my face during this time. Follain - Toning Mist: Balance + Prime This was what I sprayed over my face for the prep for my exfoliating wand. I didn’t have a true medium and I am out of Aloe Vera plants so😭 I then exfoliated with my wand starting at my cheeks and working upward and then to my forehead. I went down and to the sides of my nose. Glow slow! innisfree - Jeju Lava Seawater Lotion I used the toner to cleanse my skin and get any dirts left over from me exfoliating. SUMMER FRIDAYS - Jet Lag Mask I use this as my hydrating mask. I took the back of my Mimi Co Wand on switched to the Moisturizing Setting. I gently slid upwards my entire face for the last 2 mins only and then wiped the mask off with a damp cloth. earthtoskin - Tea Time Anti Aging Eye Cream This is the most hydrating eye cream I own. I used this with the back of my cleansing brush on the heat setting! Yes it made my eye feel so hydrated and relaxed. fresh - Lotus Anti-Aging Night Moisturizer This was the final step as a good moisturizer seals in everything! To prevent acne I use the SUNDAY RILEY - U.F.O. Ultra-Clarifying Face Oil as my last step. I didn’t use an astringent type toner, so I wanted to still treat my skin💚
