7 Simple Ways to Minimize Large Pores That Actually Work

Jul. 12, 2020
Pores are necessary for our body to function properly, but there’s no reason we can’t attempt to minimize their appearance. The size of your pores depends on a number of factors such as skin type, sun exposure, age, genetics, makeup, etc. Before learning how to minimize the appearance of your pores you need to understand what they are and why they’re necessary.
What Are Pores?
“Pore” is defined as an opening in a surface where particles can pass through. In humans, pores are the opening at the top of our hair follicles and openings that release sebum or oil to the skin’s surface in order to keep it moisturized. If you’ve ever suffered from acne, then you’ll know that pores can become clogged easily and this can have an affect ton their appearance. Pores are essential to maintaining healthy skin, understanding their purpose will help you care for them and minimize their appearance.
What Causes Large Pores?
There are multiple different reasons you may find yourself with pores large than you’d like and lucky for you most of these issues can be addressed. Large pores can result due to:
  • Age – As you grow older the skin begins to lose elasticity causing stretching and sagging of the skin. This makes pores appear larger than they actually are. The skin also thickens with age causing skin cells to gather around the pores and create a larger appearance.
  • Sun Exposure – Years of damage from the sun can cause pores to appear large. Sun exposure thickens the skin and can remove collagen, elastin and water from the skin. The absence of moisture in the skin causes the tissue beneath the skin to shrink and pull at the pores making the sag and appear larger.
  • Genetics – Genes are probably the largest factor in determining the size and appearance of your pores. It’s more likely that you will have larger pores if members of your family also have them.
  • Clogged Pores – Excess oil and dead skin are the main causes of clogged pores and they can cause your pores to appear larger than normal. Clogged pores often lead to blackheads and blemishes which can draw attention to the size of your pores and increase their size by expanding the area.
How to Minimize Pores
Oftentimes, tips for minimizing the appearance of pores are overcomplicated and ineffective. We’ve compiled a list of the most simple and effective ways to minimize large pores that actually work:
  • Cleanse Your Face Regularly – One of the most essential steps in keeping the appearance of your pores small is cleansing your face in the morning and evening. It can be easy to get distracted by so many skincare products, but simply washing your face with warm water and soap on a regular basis will help to eliminate dirt and oil that may build up in the pore, reducing their appearance.
  • Exfoliate – Exfoliation removes the dead skin cells from the top layer of skin which leaves the skin bright and smooth. Exfoliating at least once a week will prevent your pores from stretching out and appearing even larger. There are two types of exfoliants – physical and chemical. Physical exfoliants are great for getting rid of dead skin cells but may be too harsh for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin. Chemical exfoliants have two subcategories known as AHAs and BHAs that are great for removing dead skin cells gently.
  • Moisturize – Keeping the skin moisturized reduces the chance of developing dry, cracked or oily skin. Even those with oily skin should moisturize as it can lessen the production of oil in the skin and reduce the appearance of oiliness.
  • Use SPF – Sunscreen is important in minimizing the appearance of pores as sun damage is one of the main contributors to large pores. Using SPF helps to block the sun’s damaging rays from penetrating the skin which keeps the skin tight and firm.
  • Use a Clay Mask – Clay masks are and amazing pore minimizer due to their purifying effects. They are extremely efficient when it comes to removing dirt, oil, dead skin and any other impurities that may be in the pores.
  • Evaluate Your Skincare/Makeup Products – Sometimes the products you use on a regular basis could be causing your pores to appear larger than they are. Many products irritate the skin and lead to clogged pores. Make sure that all of your products are noncomedogenic and gentle on the skin.
  • Stay Hydrated – In addition to taking care of your skin with products, water can also be very beneficial for the health of your skin. Drinking plenty of water helps to keep the skin hydrated from the inside out, remove toxins from the skin’s surface and improve complexion. Try drinking at least 8 glasses or more per day to keep your skin looking healthy.

A little bit of moisturizing a day keeps the dry skin away! Moisturizing is crucial to a healthy skin barrier. All 𝗺𝗼𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗿𝘀 help with dry skin. Yet, not all moisturizers are created equal. So, how do you choose the 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗿 for your skin? I am breaking it down today for #WinterSkinReliefDay. In general, 𝗺𝗼𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗿𝘀 provide a little bit of water to the skin and contain a greasy substance that holds it in. 𝗠𝗼𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗿𝘀 are formulated in 𝟯 𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀: ✅ 𝗢𝗰𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀: greasy/oily and block the evaporation of water from your skin. 💦 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀: pull water into the top layer of your skin both from the air and from deeper layers of the skin. 🧖🏾‍♀️ 𝗘𝗺𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: not really moisturizering but rather to make the skin feel smooth by replacing absent skin the lipids and oils to fill in all the cracks on the skin, helping smooth out the surface of your skin and repair your skin’s barrier. Here is a cheat sheet to help you select the appropriate moisturizer for your skin. 𝗣𝗿𝗼 𝘁𝗶𝗽𝘀 📅 𝗠𝗼𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆, regardless of your skin type. Even oily skin needs moisturizing every day with the right type of moisturizer. Please avoid moisturizing reactively, aka moisturizering 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 when your skin is dry. 🚿 Always apply to 𝗱𝗮𝗺𝗽 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗻. P.S I keep my moisturizer in my shower to apply right after I towel off gently. 🔑 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗿. This is key for the winter 🥶 months. You need both a humectant which draw moisture to the skin and occlusive ingredients which keep water from evaporating off of your skin. 🌓𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗮 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗿. This is really important in the winter if you are using humectant heavy moisturizer. The dry air can pull the water out of your skin. Sounds crazy right? 🚫𝗔𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴. Even if you do not have sensitive skin. Fragrance and coloring are just a set up for possible irritation/allergy and no one has time for that. 🦶🏾 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗼𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗸. are pore bubbling masks worth it? 🧼🛁💬
are pore bubbling masks worth it? 🧼🛁💬
since COVID has started, I know many people are on new (or refining old) skincare journeys and I’ve recently been experiencing some dryness/dehydrating as the winter rolls around, which also aggravates my already oily skin. I’ve worked in the beauty industry for a while and also was formerly an esthetician, so I can get picky with skincare and ingredients. ‼️for reference, my skin type is: combo (oily/dehydrated), formerly acneic, hyperpigmentation prone, and sensitive 🔬I’ve used Dr. Jart in the past and love that it’s a Korean, science-backed brand so I was stoked to try this Porecting Solution Mask! this mask promises fresh, clear glowing skin that deeply cleanses and purifies pores. the mask contains charcoal and saponine, which creates the bubbling effect you see in the above photo. this product does not contain sulfates, paragons, are phthalates. 🛁when I first took it out of its package, I thought there were *two* masks per package instead of one, but if you read the instructions, there’s actually a “mask film” on the actual mask itself that you’re supposed to remove, so make sure to do that! the actual mask is thick and full of product while the mask film is thinner and lighter in color. the directions also give you a tip to massage the mask to release the bubbling/foaming effect - I did this mask with my mom at the same time in separate rooms and she totally didn’t read the instructions so her mask didn’t bubble at all, so I would suggest to definitely massage the mask. 💬I left it on for 20 minutes and it continued to bubble about 5-10 minutes in, then stopped bubbling. you can hear the bubbles pop as the mask sits on your face, which is kinda weird but cool. the mask didn’t slip off AT ALL which is also a huge, even when I put a sweatshirt on over my head. after taking it off, the serum took about another 10 minutes to soak into my skin and my face felt super smooth and my pores looked tighter and more clean. I have a few sebaceous filaments on my nose that I sometimes pick at and as I was rubbing the serum into my skin, I saw that some of the sebaceous filaments on my nose were sloughing off (which is gross, but speaks to how well the product worked)! overall, I would definitely recommend and use this again! if you have oily skin or otherwise clogged pores, sebaceous filaments, blackheads, etc. I would suggest this for you. even if you have dry/normal skin, this would be a good option since my skin didn’t feel dried out at all afterward, even in my dry spell now, and felt rather hydrated and plump. five stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
