If you’re going to add glycolic acid to your skincare routine, you’re going to have to read this.
If you’re reading this you’re probably no stranger to the fact that some acids are used in skincare. A common one is glycolic acid. Recap on what it does, and read on to find out what I think are the best products containing glycolic acid out there this year.
What is glycolic acid and what does it do?
Naturally occurring and derived from sugarcane, glycolic acid falls into the alpha-hydroxy acid group of face acids. It’s a versatile chemical exfoliator that helps fight acne, blackheads and wrinkles. Being the smallest in molecular size, it can easily penetrate the skin and break apart the cellular glue that holds together dull and dead skin cells to reveal new and healthy skin from underneath – a process dermatologists refer to as desquamation.
Glycolic acid also stimulates collagen and elastin production, which are important for skin healing. So if you have dark spots that need to be faded, or a rough patch you want to even out, glycolic acid’s a good choice.

Self-Care Sunday!
Self-Care Sunday!
Hey everyone! Here’s a little throwback to my #selfcaresunday I just had this past weekend. Lately I’ve been super busy and haven’t had a lot of time to decompress and give my self some alone time. A lot has been going on and I’ve been struggling mentally and physically. I have had to spread myself pretty thin with all the work on my plate as well as being a support system to my family. And guess what, my skin is taking a big hit. And by “big hit” I mean pimples, everywhere! I’m breaking out like never before. The stress, anxiety, and self esteem issues have been piling up and I haven’t been handling all the pressure very well. I decided while I can’t just give up on my responsibilities, a little spa treatment would probably do me some good. And for $30 dollars it was worth it. I treated myself to this fun and classy manicure. Even though it wasn’t the full day to myself, sometimes even an hour can go a long way. Remember to take care of yourselves. Just because you might not be where you want to be, doesn’t mean you have to settle for anything less than what you need. We all need a little tlc sometimes. 💕💖
What it means to blowdry down the hair cuticle!
What it means to blowdry down the hair cuticle!
Let’s simplify what it means when a hairstylist says to blow dry down the hair cuticle: When you think of your hair, think of the shingles on a roof. They’re all laying down but on top of each other. The cuticle of our hair is doing the same! When we blow dry up or at the hair cuticle, it causes all those little shingles to stand up- causing frizz, loss of moisture, and hair damage. When we blow dry down the hair cuticle, all the shingles can lay flat against each other and be the protective barrier that they’re supposed to be. If you’re having trouble with extra frizz or loss of moisture pay attention to the direction that your blow drying. This could make all the difference!

Hairstyles for the gym don’t have to be cute - but it’s nice when they are!! Here is a SUPER easy Dutch braid into a bun - perfect for the gym when you don’t want your hair getting in your face when you’re moving around! Begin with the Dutch braid which is a 3 strand braid taking pieces from either side of your head, UNDER the middle strand of hair. Then fluff it out by pulling on the braid strands and then take all of that and put into a half bun, wrap the extra hair and you’re done!!! Literally so easy yall and SO STINKING CUTE!! Xo, Johanna
Cleanse your skin like a pro
Cleanse your skin like a pro
Cleansing is the first step of any skin regime, and it's essential to your skin's health that it is done correctly. Cleansing the skin removes makeup, sunscreen, and impurities/pollution built up from the day. Always use a Ph balanced cleanser to avoid compromising your skin's barrier. I generally switch out my gel cleanser for milk or balm in the winter months as my skin becomes drier. I find milk or balms more hydrating and soothing for the skin. My go-to right now is BIOLOGIQUE RECHERCHE - Lait Vip O2 Oxygenating Milk Cleanser paired with either the mini glove Biologique Recherche or the Luna Cleaning tool FOREO - LUNA Mini 2 Facial Cleansing Brush Fuchsia to aid deeper cleaning and increase blood circulation while massaging the skin. Try not to skip cleansing at night no matter how sleepy you are, sleeping with your makeup on goes far beyond clogged pores. Sleeping with your makeup on in the long term will prematurely age your skin due to the breakdown of collagen from environmental pollutants left on the skin. Always cleanse your skin twice at night. Double cleansing is key in removing makeup and sunscreen effectively. Makeup and sunscreen are designed to stick to the skin, and one cleanse just not going to cut it. Use colder water, never hot water to cleanse your skin. Heat is not your skin's friend; it can cause tewl (transepidermal water loss), lead to irritation, dehydration and sensitivity. Avoid cleansing the skin in the shower, the water is generally too hot, and the shower's pressure can lead to burst vessels. Pat dry, do not aggressively rub your skin with a towel - I hear too many times people rub their skin aggressively with a dry face cloth to exfoliate the skin - stop it. Be gentle with your skin; there are better ways to exfoliate your skin - trust me. Which moves me on to P50 lotions BIOLOGIQUE RECHERCHE - LOTION P50 PIGM 400 Follow your cleansing routine with the correct P50 lotion for your skin type. P50 lotion is a gentle but effective way to exfoliate, hydrate the skin while maintaining the skin's Ph and respecting its barrier function. My go-to P50 right now is Pig400 which also targets hyperpigmentation concerns. More tips and tricks on cleansing the skin below https://www.kimberlydematos.com/post/the-art-of-cleansing Dm for p50 recommendations.
