I Tried 12 Vegan & Cruelty-free Makeup Brands and these are my Favs 💗
3 HOURS AGO
It’s 2020, which means that if you care about animals and want to embrace a full vegan lifestyle, you no longer have to make sacrifices when it comes to your beauty routine. Google searches for vegan makeup have increased 50% in the past 12 months and more and more beauty brands are releasing products that ditch animal testing and animal-derived ingredients altogether, ensuring they can be classified as both ‘vegan’ and ‘cruelty-free’.
Scroll down to discover some of our favourite cruelty-free and vegan makeup brands.
It can be hard to ethically source false eyelashes since the majority are made from mink fur – which has come under much criticism for being neither vegan nor cruelty-free. Recently, more and more brands have been launching synthetic alternatives, which are just as soft and fluffy, but made without animal by products. Makeup artists recommend celebrity lash brand Lilly Lashes - founded by influencer Lilly Ghalichi. Their Premium Synthetic and Faux Mink collections features lashes that are ultra-durable and can be used time and time again.
Our top pick: Lilly Lashes Paris in Faux Mink
Lilly LASHESParis in Faux Mink
Light, wispy, and long, these lashes have a subtle flared shape which flatters any and every eye shape for a winged effect. They’re made with long-lasting synthetic fibres so can be worn again up to twenty times.
In the past few years, Cover FX have made changes to their formulas to ensure that all of their products are now vegan, cruelty-free, and free from ingredients that are tested on animals. They’ve even gained an impressive seal of approval from PETA. Another reason to love them? The brand never compromises on quality and they’re constantly improving their products based on the latest beauty innovations, so whether you’re shopping for foundation, concealer, or blushers, you can expect them to perform every single time.
Our top pick: Cover FX Natural Finish Oil-Free Foundation
COVER FXNatural Finish Foundation
If you’re restocking your kit with vegan and cruelty-free alternatives, you’re probably starting with your base. This silky-textured foundation has an oil-free formula that keeps skin looking matte and even all day long, while maintaing hydration thanks to the added addition of vitamins C and E.
Although it’s arguably one of the most popular makeup brands in the world right now, most people don’t know that many of Morphe’s products are vegan and all of their products are cruelty-free (and therefore not tested on animals). The brand is famous for its supersize eyeshadow palettes, collabs with YouTube famous MUAs, and affordable but high quality brush sets. They regularly release new collections and collaborate with big name brands and influencers such as Coca Cola and Jeffree Star. With over 400 vegan products to choose from, including eyeshadow palettes, concealers, and lip glosses, you could easily stock your entire makeup bag with vegan alternatives to your everyday essentials and still keep your makeup looks bright, colourful, and on trend.
Our top pick: Morphe The James Charles Artistry Palette
In 2018 Morphe collaborated with Instagram and YouTube star James Charles to release a supersize eyeshadow palette packed with 39 bright and highly pigmented shades. The palette was Morphe’s bestseller of the year and has sold out four times since. It remains a bestseller on the Morphe website and in Morphe stores, and the best part? It ticks all the vegan and cruelty-free boxes.
An affordable vegan makeup brand, OFRA has the cruelty-free seals of approval from PETA and Leaping Bunny, meaning you can shop everything from their long-lasting liquid lipsticks to their world-famous highlighters with a clean conscience. That’s right, luckily for us every single product is vegan and cruelty-free. The brand has been around for over twenty years and has gained a cult following from influencers and makeup artists – proof that cruelty-free makeup doesn't compromise on quality.
Our top pick: OFRA x Nikkietutorials Glazed Donut Highlighter
OFRA’s bestselling product was a result of a collaboration with beauty YouTuber Nikkietutorials. The rich and buttery formula blends effortlessly over cheekbones delivering a frosty glow thanks to pearl pigments that melt into skin for a natural-looking sheen.
As you can see, it’s now easier than ever to give your makeup bag a vegan and cruelty-free makeover without compromising on quality or choice. If you’re thinking about making the switch, you can’t go wrong with any of the above.
My skincare journey
I’m the first to admit I took for granted my skin for a long time. I only had minor breakouts in my teens & was never one to wear much for makeup. My routine consisted of a makeup wipe to cleanse & then the occasional OTC acne treatment when I’d have breakouts. One day while browsing the isles of Ulta I was approached by a female worker for help. I told her I was looking for a new foundation because my favorite was no longer working. She asked what my skincare routine was & I told her I used the occasional moisturizer & that’s it. Well, she need not explain as I knew what she was going to say, I needed to take care of my skin first! Well, off to IG I went. I followed many major influencers, you know, the ones who have like 100K & are getting all their products free. 🙄 I didn’t even take that into consideration & just started purchasing everything they recommended. Enter slide 2-3-4 as my skin reacted! I started having more breakouts than I’ve had combined in my life. I destroyed my skin barrier to the point it hurt to even put water on it! 🙈 What did I do wrong? I threw everything on my face without: 1. Researching 2. Starting slow 3. Choosing options that best suited my skin type After around three months of doing it wrong, I wised up and started over: 1. Found a gentle cleanser 2. Added Hyaluronic Acid for hydration 3. Picked one treatment product and stuck to it without adding any others 4. Found a gentle moisturizer 5. WORE SUNSCREEN- ALWAYS Slowly my face started to respond. I had less irritation. I realized I didn’t have sensitive skin but that I was sensitizing my skin by overkill on products. 🎯 Once I had my skin back in balance I was able to start working with other products; toners, Niacinamide, vitamin C and most recently a retinol. If I had come out of the gate with this basic routine I know I would have saved my face from all the damage & scarring I’m left with now. But I also know I am blessed with having genetically good skin as a woman in her mid 40’s. 🙈 My focus now on my skin is brightening, balancing my skin tone, lifting dark spots & scars & preventing wrinkles. I never go a day without doing my routine (am/pm) & that says a lot for a girl who used to just use a makeup wipe. I’ve tried A LOT of products and the one piece of advice I’d give you is: Purchase products that are meant for YOUR specific skin type. Don’t get caught up in the hype. Take the time to research, review, read comments from Several sources. It’s worth the time as you’ll save money. And ALWAYS TEST PATCH. Understand the difference between your skin having a reaction to it PURGING . I have A LOT to learn still. I will never stop so I can share with with others. I’m also so very thankful for a community like Cherie as it has given me a one stop source for information. I no longer have to look up a product on the internet. All info I need is in one handy app, just a few clicks away. Thanks for reading my journey 😘
Don't know how to choose lotions for summer? Give them a try👇
Summer is coming! Are you ready for the sunny days? Are your skincare products ready for the summer time? I believe that different seasons can choose different products to give better effects for my skin. I want to share two skincare products to you guys about my favorite lotions for summer. ERNO LASZLO - Hydraphel Skin Supplement Lotion Formulated for dry and super-dry skin types, the soothing lotion rehydrates and restores the skin after cleansing. Also, this silky, alcohol-free lotion is formulated with a soothing anti-inflammatory that will not irritate even the most sensitive skin. It infuses moisture into the skin through a variety of effective moisturizers, while promoting cell renewal and tissue repair, and removing skin flaps. The texture is a bit different with others, it’s sticky texture when it just spill out from the bottle. So when you apply on your face, the first few seconds are sticky. But the lotion absorbed really fast. You only feel smooth and hydrating but not sticky after that. It’s totally a great lotion for summer time. If you’re oil skin, you can use it in winter if you think it’s too much for summer. ORIGINS - Mega-Mushroom Relief & Resilience Soothing Treatment Lotion I believe this is a really popular lotion recently. A mushroom-infused light, soothing, watery lotion that reduces the look of redness and a prepare step for other skincare products. It gives enough moisture, but at the same time, it really helps my skin issues, for example acne and closed acne. When I get acne, I use this lotion for 4-5 days, and my acne would disappeared. And sometimes, I apply this lotion on a cotton pad, and leave it on my acne area for around 10 mins, my acne gone faster. Both lotions can help my skin to have a health and soothe result. Also, they are not sticky or oily, so great for summer time. Have you tried either of them before? If not, what's your favorite lotion for summer? 🌞

🏆 My Cheap Mask Awards 🏆
GLOBAL BEAUTY CARE - Assorted Gel Masks Key Ingredients: Glycerin (moisturizer/humectant), Cucumis Sativa Fruit Extract and Hamamelis Virginiana Extract (soothing), Ascorbic Avis (brightening), and Tocopherol (antioxidant). Scent: Cucumber Consistency/Texture: Gel Price: $9.99 for 3 X 1.7 oz mask each (Rose, Gold, and Cucumber) and mask applicator Experience: I love using this mask after I exfoliate (use about 2 times a week) because it’s so cooling and deep cleansing. It soothes my skin, but also does well to draw out impurities and oils. It also hydrates my skin without breaking it out. It’s easy to remove and doesn’t leave any residue behind. Repurchase/Recommend: Yes, it’s very budget-friendly and have enjoyed all the products included in this set! It’s soothing and great for an anytime mask. This one is a must buy for me because it actually detoxifies and hydrates the skin, without stripping. . SEPHORA COLLECTION - Mask Stick Key Ingredients: Watermelon (nourishes skin) Scent: Watermelon Consistency/Texture: Thin Clay Mask Price: $8 for 0.88 oz Experience: The stick form can be a little difficult to use in some areas, like around the nose and hairline. It also doesn’t seem hygienic because the bacteria can just harbor on there and you’re rubbing it directly on your face. It is very easy to apply, one of my main cons with clay masks is how difficult and thick they are to remove. This one is thin and easily wipes off with a washcloth. My skin is more nourished and isn’t stripped from this clay mask. I use this 1-2 times a week, depending how dry my skin is. Repurchase/Recommend: Yes, especially when they are on sale. It’s a must for me because it’s quick and easy to use and see results! I’m excited to try others from this line. . SEPHORA COLLECTION - Gel Mask Hydrating & Quenching Key Ingredients: Hyaluronic Acid (hydrates), Sea Fennel Extract (unifies and and illuminates complexion and restores radiance), and Magnesium Aspartate, Zinc Gluconate, and Copper Gluconate Complex (protect against free radicals; leaves skin refreshed, more toned, and less tired-looking). Scent: Very Fragranced, like Hollister Consistency/Texture: Gel Mask Price: $10 for 1 oz OR $20 for 2 oz Experience: I do like it for whenever my skin is looking a little bleh, but it’s nothing special. It is very fragranced and the directions tell you to remove it with a cotton ball and not rinse it off. I don’t feel comfortable leaving something so fragrant on my face, plus it does feel heavy so I think it’d break me out. Maybe that’s why I haven’t seen much results, but it’s a fun mask to grab when it’s on sale. Not worth full price. I only use this once a week because it’s so fragranced and heavy, if I use it more I’ll break out. Repurchase/Recommend: It was a decent mask, but I’d only purchase it again if it’s on sale (the smaller size is currently $4 when you can catch it in stock). Fragrance is very high on the list and can easily be smelled, even after removal, so would not recommend this to those with sensitive skin.
My Skincare Awards 🏆 Moisturizer Edition
Finding a good moisturizer for eczema and milia prone sensitive skin is key! Over the years, my skin type has ranged from oily to dry to combination. Here’s my selection from favourite to least favourite: 1. GRAYDON - The Putty This is a moisturizer that has really come through for me, specifically during the eczema days 👏🏽 Scent: oatmealish Price: $46 CAD/50mL I gave this product a try after receiving for free at work, I found it a little thick for the face at first so I mostly used it on my neck, where I had eczema. With ingredients like zinc, colloidal oatmeal, hemp seed oil, manuka honey, turmeric, it’s meant to be soothing for irritated skin... and it proved to be so, I’m glad it fell into my hands 💝 I really admired what it did for my neck that I started using it on my face too *over damp skin* so it would absorb better, and it kept my face moisturizer and protected during the cold winter. I’ve repurchased this in a FULL SIZE quantity and recommended it to friends ✨ 2. sahajan - Nourish Face Cream This is great for everyday use, under makeup too. Scent: mature lotion Price: $60 CAD/50mL I also got this for free at work and was excited to try it as I really admire the premise behind this Ayurvedic brand. Though after a few months, the cream’s texture goes from silky smooth to a bit hardened with some crunchier bits, once it melts in your palms it makes for a nice application that mattifies the skin. Great before applying makeup or just having fresh, semi-glowing skin. I apply it on over damp skin as well. Although it contains coconut oil, I find that it doesn’t break me out. I’ve definitely recommended this to my friends and will probably be repurchasing this once the winter comes around. 3. wildcraft - Bergamot Rose Face Cream This was one of the first moisturizer I remember investing in once I discovered Hyaluronic acid and needed something for the eczema on my face. Scent: ylang ylang Price: $26 CAD/60mL This is a little more on the greasy side, but at the time I found it quite nourishing for my dry, flakey skin. However, after using it almost daily for a few months is when I started noticing milia starting to form on my face, so I questioned whether this moisturizer was too rich for my skin. I’ve been using it less frequently since just wanting to use it up but also not wanting to chance it anymore, so I might finish it off as a body butter 🥴 I purchased this 3 times, but won’t be repurchasing it again since finding the 2 aforementioned moisturizers that I prefer more! Won’t be recommending this to friends anymore unless they want an affordable option. What’s your favourite moisturizer?!
