5 ingredients to avoid if you’re sensitive to skin irritation

Sensitive skin is an unfortunate issue many of us have to deal with, which can be not only uncomfortable physically but also affect our self-confidence. When our skin is irritated it becomes a red, burning, and itchy mess and can make you more prone to breakouts. There are so many factors that can cause irritation to your skin such as sun exposure, cold weather, and certain skincare products that contain triggering ingredients.
When your skin comes in contact with an irritant, the collagen breaks down and the surface of the skin is weakened, leaving it unable to repair itself. This causes redness and burning which then forces an increase in oil production that creates larger pores and more breakouts. It’s something nobody wants.
If you are wanting to avoid any issues and have your skin smooth and beautiful here are some ingredients to stay away from:
Alcohol Denat:
This ingredient is often used in a variety of skincare products to make lotions and creams lighter and to aid other ingredients to be absorbed into the skin. Although this may sound like a good idea, using products containing this ingredient can cause dryness and irritation to your skin. It breaks down your skin’s protective layer and prevents it from retaining the moisture it needs which stimulates oil production leading to more issues with acne. Since many acne skincare products contain Alcohol Denat it can mean you will be fighting a losing battle against future breakouts. Look at the ingredients before buying your next product and make sure Alcohol Denat is not on the list.
Fragrance:
Listed on most skincare and beauty products out there to make them smell better for use, the worst part about fragrance is that it does not really say what ingredients or chemicals are used to create the “fragrance”. In fact, for most companies, it is kept as a secret as to what they use for it. Even products that state they are unscented may contain additives to mask smells of other ingredients contained in the product. Fragrance can cause an itchy red rash to develop on your skin which is an annoyance that can become very uncomfortable. So, sticking with products that state they are fragrance-free is the way to go especially since you will not know what specific ingredient caused the irritation.
Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate:
This is a foaming agent that helps to up the cleaning power of the product. Although it is normally made from coconut it can be very drying and irritating to the skin. Since it makes the product a more powerful cleanser, it also strips the skin of its moisture which causes redness and dryness. It takes away the natural oils your skin will then up oil production causing pores to become enlarged and lead to more acne. When it comes to your skin a more powerful cleaning agent isn’t the best idea.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate:
This is another ingredient that is used in a cleanser to make it foam and the amount in the product can range from just a small amount to up to 50% depending on the manufacturer. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate can also cause skin irritations such as over-drying, redness, and itching when the producer makes the cleanser too powerful. Especially if you have sensitive skin like many of us do, you will be much better off to find a product that does not contain this ingredient.
Essential Oils:
Although they are often used to make products smell better or as natural remedies for different skin conditions, essential oils can actually cause a lot of irritation especially in people with sensitive skin. What makes them so harmful is that they are portrayed as being completely safe and all-natural which is often not the case. They have been known to cause rashes, blisters, hives, and even allergic reactions and respiratory issues. With sales soaring due to the popularity and lack of knowledge due to DIY methods, many people have had some unwanted reactions from essential oils. There are some types to be extra careful with, such as:
  • Bergamot: This oil makes skin extra sensitive to sunlight.
  • Clary sage oil: Used for calming and skin “benefits” may actually induce contractions in pregnant women.
  • Peppermint: Can cause life-threatening breathing problems in infants and young children.
  • Eucalyptus: This oil can bring on asthma attacks and make medications for seizures, narcolepsy, and ADHD less effective.
  • Cinnamon bark: Can cause skin irritations especially in people who have seasonal allergies.
The best way to prevent any adverse reactions is to always read the ingredient list before buying a product. Be as mindful of what you put on your skin as you are for what you put in - and on - your body. 2020s Biggest Trend: Dermatologist Approved
2020s Biggest Trend: Dermatologist Approved
The biggest trend in 2020 is PERSONLIZRD SERUMS. I tried #Atolla and here are my genuine thoughts (SURPRISE AT THE END OF CAPTION!) Do you ever feel like there are too many skincare products out there and have no idea what you need? Trust me, it’s happened to me too! I have been using #ATOLLA which is a company that formulates serums with a mixture of ingredients to target with your skin needs. Here are some of the benefits: 1) The serum is personalized for your skin. 2) you are able to monitor your skin changes each month with a skin test 3) Your formulation is altered monthly to target your problem areas. 4) It formulates several key ingredients into one serum, rather than buying separate creams. 5) it takes into account the products you are currently using. My initial skin concerns when completing my skin quiz with Atolla was battling dry skin as well as skin hyperpigmentation. They sent me a product with vitamin C complex as well as Alpha Arbutin. Vitamin C acts as my antioxidant against sun damage, evens out my hyperpigmentation, increases collagen, and increases hydration. Combining this with alpha arbutin, which targets the enzyme that produces pigment, only further reduced my hyperpigmentation. Like everything, results did not come overnight, but with consistent use, I was able to really even out my skin pigment and hydrate my skin. 🎉🎉🎉CHERIE SURPRISE 🎉🎉🎉 I've asked Atolla to give my CHERIE APP followers an exclusive code “DRCHRIS” for 25% off! Excited to see what you guys think!! 🙌🙌 Atolla - Custom Serum INGREDIENT BREAKDOWN:⤵️ The vitamin C helps with collagen growth, hyperpigmentation, as well as sun damage. The Alpha arbutin targets primarily hyperpigmentation creating an even skin tone. Depending on your product, you can use it in the morning or night.
pre + post Halloween-Makeup skincare routine
pre + post Halloween-Makeup skincare routine
Hi!! With halloween around the corner and face paints and heavy makeup inevitable, I wanted to share some products that I think would be helpful to making sure your skin stays safe and protected under makeup, and things to do post makeup to minimize irritation and acne. Besides your normal routine, here are some things you can add! Obviously I don’t suggest adding all these things in one day, but if you have some of these and you know they work for you, try it out! My skin type: sensitive, acne-prone, rosacea, combo My skin concern: redness, hyperpigmentation Pre Halloween Skincare: + FARMACY - Honey Potion Renewing Antioxidant Hydration Mask this is one of my favorite hydrating masks; it has a warming effect and it’s very healing. The antioxidants can protect from free radicals and provide a quick moisture barrier recovery. Use it very lightly and it washes off SO well. Smells a bit like honey. + FARMACY - Deep Sweep this toner is absolutely heavenly, it’s great for preparing your skin for incoming acne and clearing up oily skin and extra sebum. Not a lot of fragrance, which is great. This is perfect for halloween because salicylic acid is a bit photosensitive, but at night time there and under masks there is very little that could go wrong in that sense. + #Romer - Treatment[products]#[FourStars] this product is fairly new to me, but I am very excited about it. It’s a moisturizer/treatment combo, so you can leave it on or wash it off as a mask. I prefer to leave it on; it’s very soothing and rich, so it hydrates my skin so well. Smells very fresh and also a bit like fruit! It’s made with niacinamide and prickly pear, so it’s nourishing as well as a little clarifying. Post Halloween Skincare: + PLANT APOTHECARY - Not A Spot Acne Treatment Mask you know how you can FEEL acne coming after a long day of wearing makeup or sweating or whatever? This mask is perfect for it! I usually use this as a spot treatment unless my skin is really bad - it can be drying on normal or dry skin. If you’re oily or combo, just use sparingly. It’s a powder so you have to follow the directions and mix it with water (or your favorite serum or essence or toner), I usually just do water, and then it’s like a paste! Not much of a smell, but I do like the gentleness of it. + SNP - Cicaronic Sheet Mask after acne masks or clay masks, I like to follow up with a hydrating sheet mask to soothe and calm my skin. This one is perfect - made with centella asiatica aka cica - and the sheet mask actually fits my face for the first time ever! This will add some hydration back into your skin post acne/clay mask and prep for the rest of your routine. Smells like fresh cut grass!

🥑GLOW RECIPE AVOCADO MELT RETINOL SLEEPING MASK
🥑 - GLOW RECIPE AVOCADO MELT RETINOL SLEEPING MASK - 🥑 I purchased this Sleeping Mask from Boxycharm Add-ons because I’ve always wanted to try this brand. I really wanted the Watermelon one but they didn’t have it. BUT you can’t beat the price I paid for it. Lol This cozy, Retinol-Powered Sleeping Mask has Avocado, Matcha, gently smoothing PHA and encapsulated Retinol which is released throughout all hours of the night for skin recovery. This Sleeping Mask is Cruelty Free, Vegan and Free of Harmful Chemicals. - My First Impressions - I have said this before, and I’ll say it again, I’m a sucker for pretty packaging. This Sleeping Mask comes in a cute little glass jar. It’s green because it’s an Avocado 🥑 product. This product makes for great pictures and it’s totally shelf candy. - Scent & Texture - I honestly thought this product was going to smell like Avocados 🥑 but it doesn’t. Kinda let me down but that’s ok. It almost is scent free but it has a very faint fresh scent. The texture is so LUXURIOUS! It’s super thick, like a Balm mixed with a cream. - Effectiveness & Results - I can’t believe how satisfying this Sleeping Mask is to apply! It feels like it just melts into my skin! It doesn’t leave my skin looking and feeling greasy or sticky like other Sleeping Masks do. It isn’t heavy either. It absorbs really fast without leaving any film or residue behind. It moisturizes so well! I apply it before bed, then wake up glowing! My skin looks brighter and lighter. It looks hydrated and healthy. I even like using it as a basic facial moisturizer. It’s light enough for everyday use. At least it is for me. - My Conclusion - I am thoroughly impressed with this Sleeping Mask. It’s super effective and fairy affordable. It is gentle enough for sensitive skin (at least I think so?) I definitely recommend it for any skin type or tone. It would make a great Christmas Gift for all you Hubby’s and Wifeys out there Gift Searching! Thank you for sticking with me on this one! Thank you for reading as well! I hope you all enjoyed this article and this product! Any questions, comments, complaints or suggestions? Let me know in the comments below! Briogeo Scalp Revival at the Sephora Sale
Briogeo Scalp Revival at the Sephora Sale
The November Sephora sale is coming up soon, so I wanted to tell you all about my thoughts on these Briogeo Scalp Revival products. Note: I will not be talking about the shampoo. I really love Briogeo as a brand. Their Curl Charisma line has really helped me bring my curls back to life. However, I have super sensitive skin all over my body and this includes my scalp. I have to treat it right or else I get HELLA itchy and I also get dandruff occasionally. Here are my thoughts and experiences with Briogeo’s Scalp Revival Conditioner and Scalp Treatment Serum: Briogeo Scalp Revival Conditioner: Briogeo - Scalp Revival Charcoal + Peppermint Oil Cooling Jelly Conditioner ok, so you can clearly see that I’ve rated this 1/5 stars... but let me explain why: my hair is SO DRY. It’s really frustrating having to use lightweight products near my scalp, but having to use super thick creams on the rest of my hair. I thought this product might solve that problem by, you know, conditioning my hair a good amount all around. Nope. This conditioner has the same consistency as their shampoo, just minus the exfoliating beads...they describe it as a “gel conditioner” but it freaking lathers dude like a conditioner LATHERING?!?! No thank you. It dried out my hair so badly and did not give me any type of moisture whatsoever. So, obviously, this is not the right product for my hair type, but who would benefit from this? I would definitely recommend this conditioner if you have the oiliest hair on the planet. Like, wash your hair daily oily, no curl, no texture, just pin straight hair. That is the only type of hair I’d recommend this to. I got this in a travel kit (2oz) which I would recommend picking up if this sounds like your kind of product! Briogeo Scalp Revival Treatment Serum:Briogeo - Scalp Revival Charcoal + Tea Tree Scalp Treatment Serum ok, so we are obviously full 180 here. Let me tell you about my lover. My partner in crime. The treatment serum. Oh my gosh. This has SAVED my scalp on multiple occasions. I use it every other time I wash my hair, so probably twice a month. It’s a lightweight serum that treats itchy and dry scalp but it doesn’t make your scalp oily AT ALL!! I love it. I part my hair into sections around the front hairline and crown where I get the itchiest, and apply it while my hair is wet after I get out of the shower. It’s kind of pricey (1oz for $32) but a bottle lasts forever for me. Like, at least a year! I highly recommend this for those with an itchy scalp. Ok, but why tea tree and charcoal? They have healing and cleansing properties for your scalp without being overly harsh or stripping to your hair. Briogeo’s products are 6-free: no harsh sulfates, no parabens, no silicones, no phthalates, no artificial dyes, no DEA. This supports healthy overall hair. Have you tried anything from Briogeo? #CheriePartner

Continuing the ACNH series, today I bring you Pietro ❤️ my favorite sheep villager and overall best boy. Products used: ⭐️ Complexion products: •e.l.f. - Poreless Putty Primer •DIOR - Forever Skin Correct Concealer •essence - All About Matt! Fixing Compact Powder ⭐️ For the teardrop, heart & nose: •Transcend Dance from COLOURPOP - In a Trance Shadow Palette •My Milkshake from COLOURPOP - Strawberry shake shadow palette •Daiquiri from the same palette as above. ⭐️ Highlighter (for the tip of the nose): •OFRA - Limited Edition Rodeo Drive Highlighter Ornament ⭐️ Brows: • ohii - Magic Hair Wand ⭐️ Lips: •The now discontinued NYX Whipped Lip & Cheek Soufflé in Molten Love 💋 ⭐️ Lashes: •I just went to my nearest beauty supply and picked the most dramatic lashes I could find! Brand is Cherry Blossom, they’re their 3D SILK LASH, style #003 For this look I did my face makeup as usual, just some light concealing, just powdering with a matte powder. I like to keep my brows sheer and fluffy when doing villager makeup lol 😅 I tried drawing the teardrop and heart on my cheeks freehanded but ya girl is not talented like that, so I decided to do cutouts of both and stick them to my face using washi tape so it’s easy to remove and won’t tug on my skin, then I just filled them in using the shadows I mentioned above from Colourpop. For my nose I used Daiquiri from the Strawberry Shake palette, which is perfect for this since it’s a pigment and you just need the tiniest bit! Then I added some highlighter just on the tip to make it pop 😋 For some reason NYX always discontinues the products I really like, so I can’t tag the exact product I used since you won’t be able to find it but honestly any red lipstick or cream you have will do the trick! Whenever I’m doing extra af makeup I like to wear extra af, dramatic lashes like these 😌 lashes always make the look in my opinion! These from Cherry Blossom are so soft, I wish the band wasn’t as obvious but the more you use them, the easier it is to apply them! And that’s it! Surprisingly, this look didn’t take as long as I thought it would but it is still cute and festive 🤡 Which villager should I do next? I already have some on my list, but I’d love to hear your favorites! 💗 #cheriepartner #cheriecreator
