5 ingredients to avoid if you’re sensitive to skin irritation
Jun. 18, 2020
Sensitive skin is an unfortunate issue many of us have to deal with, which can be not only uncomfortable physically but also affect our self-confidence. When our skin is irritated it becomes a red, burning, and itchy mess and can make you more prone to breakouts. There are so many factors that can cause irritation to your skin such as sun exposure, cold weather, and certain skincare products that contain triggering ingredients.
When your skin comes in contact with an irritant, the collagen breaks down and the surface of the skin is weakened, leaving it unable to repair itself. This causes redness and burning which then forces an increase in oil production that creates larger pores and more breakouts. It’s something nobody wants.
If you are wanting to avoid any issues and have your skin smooth and beautiful here are some ingredients to stay away from:
This ingredient is often used in a variety of skincare products to make lotions and creams lighter and to aid other ingredients to be absorbed into the skin. Although this may sound like a good idea, using products containing this ingredient can cause dryness and irritation to your skin. It breaks down your skin’s protective layer and prevents it from retaining the moisture it needs which stimulates oil production leading to more issues with acne. Since many acne skincare products contain Alcohol Denat it can mean you will be fighting a losing battle against future breakouts. Look at the ingredients before buying your next product and make sure Alcohol Denat is not on the list.
Listed on most skincare and beauty products out there to make them smell better for use, the worst part about fragrance is that it does not really say what ingredients or chemicals are used to create the “fragrance”. In fact, for most companies, it is kept as a secret as to what they use for it. Even products that state they are unscented may contain additives to mask smells of other ingredients contained in the product. Fragrance can cause an itchy red rash to develop on your skin which is an annoyance that can become very uncomfortable. So, sticking with products that state they are fragrance-free is the way to go especially since you will not know what specific ingredient caused the irritation.
Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate:
This is a foaming agent that helps to up the cleaning power of the product. Although it is normally made from coconut it can be very drying and irritating to the skin. Since it makes the product a more powerful cleanser, it also strips the skin of its moisture which causes redness and dryness. It takes away the natural oils your skin will then up oil production causing pores to become enlarged and lead to more acne. When it comes to your skin a more powerful cleaning agent isn’t the best idea.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate:
This is another ingredient that is used in a cleanser to make it foam and the amount in the product can range from just a small amount to up to 50% depending on the manufacturer. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate can also cause skin irritations such as over-drying, redness, and itching when the producer makes the cleanser too powerful. Especially if you have sensitive skin like many of us do, you will be much better off to find a product that does not contain this ingredient.
Although they are often used to make products smell better or as natural remedies for different skin conditions, essential oils can actually cause a lot of irritation especially in people with sensitive skin. What makes them so harmful is that they are portrayed as being completely safe and all-natural which is often not the case. They have been known to cause rashes, blisters, hives, and even allergic reactions and respiratory issues. With sales soaring due to the popularity and lack of knowledge due to DIY methods, many people have had some unwanted reactions from essential oils. There are some types to be extra careful with, such as:
- Bergamot: This oil makes skin extra sensitive to sunlight.
- Clary sage oil: Used for calming and skin “benefits” may actually induce contractions in pregnant women.
- Peppermint: Can cause life-threatening breathing problems in infants and young children.
- Eucalyptus: This oil can bring on asthma attacks and make medications for seizures, narcolepsy, and ADHD less effective.
- Cinnamon bark: Can cause skin irritations especially in people who have seasonal allergies.
The best way to prevent any adverse reactions is to always read the ingredient list before buying a product. Be as mindful of what you put on your skin as you are for what you put in - and on - your body. HOW TO ROUND 2: EASIEST INTENSE WING LINER
Why hello there! I’m continuing on my how to tutorials. I really like this series breaking down all makeup trends and putting up how to tutorials for all makeup artist levels for makeup trends. Continuing on the wing liner, I used a liquid liner for my wing tutorial which is what I normally do. But liquid liners are not very beginner friendly. So this tutorial will teach you how to create an intense wing liner using a matte black eyeshadow. So check out the tutorial above to see how I achieve a wing liner using eyeshadow. Next tutorial will be the last of the wing liners. NEW FIND! And I’m pleasantly surprised!?
It was time to get a new moisturizer. I was currently using the HONEST - Hydrogel Cream paired with the PAULA'S CHOICE - Omega+ Complex Moisturizer , RADHA BEAUTY - Rosehip Oil , and timeless SKIN CARE - Squalane Oil 100% Pure because I have pretty dry skin. I love both of those moisturizers (although I’m not fond of all the Paula’s choice Omega+ complex moisturizer ingredients, but I loooooove the texture and feeling of it ) and love my oils (I won’t stop using the oils), but knew I needed a richer cream and also wanted to keep it down to just one cream, for time and my bank accounts sake. So if you’ve seen my last post, I was deciding between 3 brands but I couldn’t decide and was also nervous to try a new moisturizer, even though I knew I needed one, because I’m also acne prone so a new moisturizer to me was just terrifying lol. I was about to just get my usual HONEST - Hydrogel Cream because I knew it didn’t break me out and I like it a lot, although not quite as moisturizing as I need, it was on the safer side and I can’t imagine going a day without a moisturizer on this Sahara desert of a face!!! But then I discovered this brand I’ve never seen before? It’s called Awake Human. It’s not even a listing on Cherie for me to add the product! I read the ingredients and was intrigued (scroll through pics to see ingredients list), but because of my fear of new moisturizers, I was hesitant.. but I decided to bite the bullet because the ingredients looked amazing, was cheaper than Paula’s choice and the honest beauty’s moisturizer, but had the same amount of product. I received it a few days ago and I am in love!!!!! Soooooo rich and creamy and hydrating feeling, and it had the same smooth, rich, texture as the Paula’s Choice omega moisturizer, that I love so much!!! It comes in a nice little pump type of packaging, which I like. Keeps bacteria and gunk out. If you scroll through my pictures, you’ll see it. And a little bit goes a long way! The picture you see of the product on my fingers is the amount I use, but you can totally use less, especially if you have more oily or normal skin. I just like a lot of moisturizer! Lol I’ve noticed my face is much less dry feeling and looks smoother with less texture. I will keep you updated, but I think this is my new fave!!!! I’m so excited lol. Here the link the purchase: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NWXJYVK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_YHI-Fb9BRJKT0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 If you’re hesitant but intrigued like I was, I strongly encourage you to just try it. And if it happens that doesn’t work for your face, because remember, everyone is different and skincare is not a one size fits all, then it would most definitely be a really really nice hand cream, that would fit nicely in your bag. Have you heard of this brand before? And if so, have you used anything from them?
ACNE, DULL, DRY or PREMATURE skin? Find out why!
🔶 Okay, so we’ve all heard or read about pH balanced products and products that rebuild the acid mantle...but I think a lot of us don’t know why it is SO important to keep the pH level of your skin BALANCED and your acid mantle UNCOMPROMISED! ❌ Generally, skin that isn't behaving can be traced to pH problems. Skin issues like eczema, redness, dry patches, acne, oiliness, psoriasis, and premature signs of aging all indicate that your skin's pH is off-balance! This is how IMPORTANT this topic truly is 😳 🔸 So, WHY is the pH balance important to skin? Any great deviation—either too high of a pH or too low—throws off the “ecosystem” of skin and causes inflammation and irritation when the natural oils and natural bacteria on the skin are disrupted. (Aka: your acid mantle has now been compromised due to this) ⭐️ If you are suffering from any of the above issues, perhaps you need to take a step back and really look into the routine you have in place currently, for morning and night. ⭐️The pH of your cleansers are very important because something that is high pH, 9 and above, can be too drying and stripping for your skin. And your cleanser is your first step of your skincare routine. So you don’t want to start it off by using a cleanser with a pH level lower or higher than ***4.5-5.5.*** When your acid mantle and skin barrier are compromised, it can lead to BAD bacteria, which causes ACNE and dehydration, which ultimately leads to WRINKLES!😱🛑 🔸Tiffany Masterson, the owner and creator of Drunk Elephant is an absolute master when it comes to knowing how to Properly care for your skin. “The acid mantle just so happens to protect skin from environmental factors that lead to aging and all-around irritation,” she says. So, she made sure that ALL of their products are pH balanced to perfection 🙌🏻 - if you’re having bad acne I REALLY suggest taking a “Clean Break” - and switching your routine to a short yet VERY effective routine using Drunk Elephant products. All of their products from head to toe are pH balanced so I promise you can’t go wrong with their products! ✅ But now that this topic has become so popular in the beauty world, there are TONS of other amazing brands that have created pH balanced products to help aid with these skin issues as well. But if you ask me, I think Tiffany started the trend 😉🐘💕✨ 🔸Here are some other REALLY GREAT pH Focused Products from other brands: ▪️Tula’s Pro-Glycolic 10 percent pH resurfacing gel ▪️La Roche-Posay made a device called “My Skin Track”: a prototype of a wearable sensor that detects trace amounts of sweat from your pores and promises an accurate skin pH reading in just 15 minutes. ▪️Brands like Cosrx and Acwell are K-Beauty brands thus they tend to make most of their products with a low pH level that is gentle on the skin and won’t cause any extra irritation. So if you’re having any of the above issues, check your products pH levels😊 - hope this helps some of you! 💋
Cleanse your skin like a pro
Cleansing is the first step of any skin regime, and it's essential to your skin's health that it is done correctly. Cleansing the skin removes makeup, sunscreen, and impurities/pollution built up from the day. Always use a Ph balanced cleanser to avoid compromising your skin's barrier. I generally switch out my gel cleanser for milk or balm in the winter months as my skin becomes drier. I find milk or balms more hydrating and soothing for the skin. My go-to right now is BIOLOGIQUE RECHERCHE - Lait Vip O2 Oxygenating Milk Cleanser paired with either the mini glove Biologique Recherche or the Luna Cleaning tool FOREO - LUNA Mini 2 Facial Cleansing Brush Fuchsia to aid deeper cleaning and increase blood circulation while massaging the skin. Try not to skip cleansing at night no matter how sleepy you are, sleeping with your makeup on goes far beyond clogged pores. Sleeping with your makeup on in the long term will prematurely age your skin due to the breakdown of collagen from environmental pollutants left on the skin. Always cleanse your skin twice at night. Double cleansing is key in removing makeup and sunscreen effectively. Makeup and sunscreen are designed to stick to the skin, and one cleanse just not going to cut it. Use colder water, never hot water to cleanse your skin. Heat is not your skin's friend; it can cause tewl (transepidermal water loss), lead to irritation, dehydration and sensitivity. Avoid cleansing the skin in the shower, the water is generally too hot, and the shower's pressure can lead to burst vessels. Pat dry, do not aggressively rub your skin with a towel - I hear too many times people rub their skin aggressively with a dry face cloth to exfoliate the skin - stop it. Be gentle with your skin; there are better ways to exfoliate your skin - trust me. Which moves me on to P50 lotions BIOLOGIQUE RECHERCHE - LOTION P50 PIGM 400 Follow your cleansing routine with the correct P50 lotion for your skin type. P50 lotion is a gentle but effective way to exfoliate, hydrate the skin while maintaining the skin's Ph and respecting its barrier function. My go-to P50 right now is Pig400 which also targets hyperpigmentation concerns.
