Why Do I Have Large Pores? 
Many people think of pores as being “open” or “closed,” but this isn’t really the case. They do dilate like a camera lens or the pupil in your eyes, so large pores are a little like your camera’s lens getting stuck on wide.  
Large pores can be caused by several factors, including oil and other impurities on the surface of the skin. When this happens, an unwanted mixture of dead skin cells, pollution and oil can sink into pores, causing congestion, which clogs up the pore. The oil produced by the sebaceous gland cannot flow freely as a result, so the pore stretches, which can give it the appearance of widening and deepening.
You’re also more likely to have large-looking pores if you have naturally oily skin, because oily skin overproduces sebum, which increases the likelihood of clogged and enlarged pores.
Large pores can also be caused by sun damage, aging, and genetics. Men are more likely to experience enlarged pores than women, and if your parent struggles with large pores, you may, too.

While the causes of large pores are often genetic, you can definitely minimize the appearance of large pores with the use of skincare products that contain the right ingredients. Here are the top 3 you should be looking out for in a potential pore minimizer: 
  • Ribose
Ribose is a simple sugar and carbohydrate often obtained from corn seeds. It’s the only known cosmetic ingredient that is used by the skin cells to speed up cell turnover and control the restoration of energy. One study by skincare company Oskia even showed that the energizing action of Ribose stimulates the synthesis of all structuring proteins and limits the break-down of skin tissues. In other words, it can prevent the appearance of wrinkles. In turn, this elasticity can be an effective way of reducing the appearance of large pores.
  • Lactic acid
Clearing build-up and congestion is the first step towards minimizing pores. This will keep the skin clean, ensuring that the pores don’t expand further, and is done by exfoliating the skin. Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) and is more hydrating and gentler than other alpha hydroxy acids. It’s naturally found in milk, though the lactic acid in today’s skincare products is synthetically produced. They are naturally-derived exfoliants that help to reduce the cohesion of dead skin cells and leave pore openings smaller and clear of debris. 
  • Red clover flower extract
Red clover contains powerful antioxidants and is often used as a remedy for irritating skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and rashes. Red clover extract also boosts circulation, which helps your cells work more effectively. In other words, it helps the body to clear skin conditions by moving the waste that builds up beneath the surface of the skin. Red clover extract can decrease sebum production and, as a result, reduce the appearance of conspicuous pores. This, just like Ribose, is particularly effective on aging and dry skin due to its stimulating and regenerative nature. 
What else can I do to minimize my enlarged pores?
  • Go easy on your skin. You’ve already put in all the effort of carefully selecting the perfect products for your skin, so continue this trend with your daily regimen. Use gentle, water-soluble products and, if you have particularly oily skin, avoid products that are overly emollient (thick and creamy).
  • Look out for products that contain Niacinamide. It can help to increase the skin’s elasticity, which can reduce the size of enlarged pores, brighten skin and even out discoloration.
  • Try clay masks. These can be great for absorbing excess oil and pulling impurities away from the skin, provided they don’t contain any harsh chemicals.
  • Remember to take off your makeup! This sounds obvious, but going to bed without thoroughly removing your makeup will only clog your pores further, and potentially cause large breakouts.
  • Continue to moisturize, even if you have oily skin. Moisturizing products actually help your natural sebum to penetrate deeper into the layers of the skin. A lightweight moisturizer can reduce the appearance of oiliness, and also helps to condition your skin effectively, without overloading your skin with oil and grease. 
If you select the right skincare products and don’t tackle the problem so aggressively that you make it worse, you should see your pores shrink, see reduced redness, and have fresher feeling skin!
