STOP looking at SPF and READ this before buying sunscreen🌞

Every other skincare product seems to put ‘natural’ or ‘natural mineral’ on its label. But what does it actually mean? Interestingly, for sunscreen, this refers to something very specific. Read on to find out how sunscreens work and how you should pick one that suits you.
If you’re a bit like me two years ago, you’ll think that high SPF equals good sunscreen. Put on that SPF 50 and feel like an invincible queen. I mean, sunscreen’s just that white stuff you squeeze from a tube and put onto your skin – how hard can it be? After I became obsessed with skincare though, I discovered that that was only half the story. It turns out there are actually two types of sunscreen. Luckily for you, I’ve geeked out on all this stuff so you don’t have to. Behold! Your majesty presents: physical vs. chemical sunscreens.
Physical 🆚 chemical sunscreens
Physical sunscreens, sometimes referred to as ‘natural’ or ‘mineral’ sunscreens, contain active mineral ingredients like titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. Once spread over your skin, these ingredients act as a repellent shield, deflecting and scattering harmful UVA and UVB rays. They take effect pretty much as soon as you apply them, but you do need to be careful to lather it on regularly if you’re engaged in an activity which will cause you to rub or sweat it off.
Physical sunscreens often feel heavier and in general, active minerals also offer less protection than chemical absorbers against UVA. The silver lining – the formulas out there these days have improved significantly and feel a lot lighter. If you want to avoid that white masking effect, you can also go for matte and tinted versions. Although physical sunscreens are less likely to clog pores, they are more moisturizing so you might still want to choose carefully if you’ve got oily or acne-prone skin.
Chemical sunscreens, on the other hand, contain carbon-based compounds like avobenzone, oxybenzone, octisalate and octinoxate. Instead of repelling and deflecting UV rays, these chemicals seep into a deeper layer of the skin to absorb harmful UV rays and transform them into heat, allowing it to dissipate from the skin. Because it doesn’t need to sit there physically defending the surface of your skin, you won’t get that white masking effect either.
However, you do need to put it on earlier – in general about 20 minutes before sun exposure, and you’ll need to reapply it once every two hours or so. Chemical sunscreens tend to be thinner, lighter and non-sticky, so are considered more suitable for daily use. Besides, it’s also easier to add other ingredients such as peptides and enzymes to the formula. However, some people, especially those with sensitive skin, have reported irritation and allergic reactions from using chemical sunscreens.
Should I choose a physical or chemical sunscreen?
It’s actually not so much a question of either or, but a question of if and when.
If you’ve got sensitive skin, you might want to opt for physical sunscreens, whereas if you’ve got oily or acne-prone skin, you might want to choose a chemical sunscreen instead. If you’re going somewhere where it’s going to be difficult to keep reapplying sunscreen, or you’re just the type (like me) that tends to forget, you might want to stick to a physical sunscreen so you’re over and done with in one go. When you’re going to the beach for a swim, or will engage in an activity that’ll make you sweat a lot and cause your sunscreen to rub off (like beach volleyball), go for a chemical sunscreen instead.
If you do choose a physical sunscreen, make sure you look for one that contains zinc oxide, which is much more effective and complete in its protection against UVA compared to titanium oxide.
But in truth, it really doesn’t have to be one or the other. As long as your skin is compatible with the different formulas, I’d recommend using a combination of both types of sunscreens to get both outer and inner protection. Also, you don’t have to mix your own sunscreen concoction either – there are combination sunscreens readily available for you to choose from.
Some final words
You should hopefully now have a pretty good idea whether a physical or chemical (or both!) sunscreen’s more suitable for you. But don’t let this article detract you from the basics. In choosing a sunscreen, something with SPF 30 or higher is recommended. But SPF’s just part of the equation; you also want to make sure that your sunscreen is broad spectrum, protecting you from both UVA and UVB, fragrance-free, noncomedogenic (doesn’t clog pores), is oil and paraben-free.

This mist is so fun to use. You can use it with makeup or on its own! I tend to use it on bare skin for a natural glowing look. It is a fine mist that moisturizes, nourishes and helps fight damage. It also helps fight irritation and calm the skin. I will be posting a video a little later of me using this before makeup application! Makeup glides on after using this to prep the skin. What’s in it: peach extract Hyaluronic acid Reishi mushroom lotus extract cica ceramides much more! This product has so many awesome ingredients, it’s hard not to love! PEACH & LILY - Glass Skin Veil Mist I will give this a 5/5! Pros: can be used to refresh makeup can be used on bare skin hydrating calming gives a wonderful dewy glow smells nice Cons: $30 for a mist is a bit pricey but this mist does so much in return 💞 let me know a mist you love!
Kylie x Grinch - Worth the Hype?
Kylie x Grinch - Worth the Hype?
Review time!!! I just received the entire Kylie Cosmetics Grinch Collection in the mail this week & I want to break down each product and tell you what I loved and didn’t love. Palette: I’m not one that reaches for tons of colour usually but all the greens in this palette are gorgeous! There’s a mix of matte and shimmer shades, and as usual, the shadows blend like a dream! The good thing about this palette is that there are still some neutral shades rather than just greens. I definitely appreciate the mixture of shades. Shadow Sticks: The Kylie shadow sticks are probably one of my favourite products they have ever released. They are so extremely pigmented, and so easy to apply. They’re basically fool proof, and they set as a shadow. If you haven’t tried them out, I highly suggest you do! In this collection we have a super pretty light shimmery green, light gold, and two rosy toned shadow sticks. Shimmer Eye Glazes: This product is insane. They are a super intensely pigmented eyeshadow that leaves the lids looking wet & dripping in glitter! One swipe of these on the lid is literally all you need for that intense shimmer. If you’re someone who loves super shimmery eyeshadow, I recommend giving the Kylie Cosmetics Shimmer Eye Glazes a try. This collection came with 2 shades: a minty turquoise green and a gold - & I’m obsessed and so happy to be adding these to my collection!! Olive Kyliner: My go to liquid liner is the black Kyliner, so i wasn’t surprised when i loved the easy application and long wearing quality of this olive Kyliner! The liner applies a lighter olive green and dries down to a deeper olive shade. It’s definitely not something I’d reach for everyday, although it’s definitely cute for the holidays or even for a pop of colour to a neutral eye! Blush: I am a huge fan of the Kylie Cosmetics Blushes as opposed to the other blushes I’ve tried from the brand this one had some shimmer in it! It’s quite similar to the NARS “orgasm” blush but with a stronger pink hue. I love the shimmer in it, it adds a pretty glow to the cheeks, perfect for the holidays.. or any day really :P Highlight: Def on theme, but probably my least favourite product in of the collection :( Don’t get me wrong, it’s super blinding and glowy. Although, once I applied to my face it showed off as very green. Personally I don’t want a green glow on my face! But hey, if that’s your vibe that’s cool! Definitely not a highlight I’d reach for everyday. Lip Kit: Obsessed. This red is EVERYTHING! This Lip Kit is one of the best reds I have ever tried. It has a matte finish and is extremely long wearing. I know it’s sold out but a similar shade would be “BOSS” by Kylie. Lipsticks: These shades are gorg for the holidays and I love the shade range! Long wearing & comfortable on the lips. High Glosses: Kylies high glosses are high shine, but very sticky! So if you’re not a fan of sticky glosses you won’t love these. These shades are perf for the holidays and everyday!

Skincare Products ( that i have been LOVING )
Skincare Products ( that i have been LOVING )
Recently, I have been super into skincare and keeping up with my skin’s appearance as I am growing myself in the beauty industry ( meaning that I am now CONSTANTLY doing makeup on myself! ) Fluff and Starface both sent me these products to try out, and I have been LOVING them so far! I have combination skin, and this routine is PERFECT for me! My new three favorite skincare products that I have been enjoying as of lately are 1) FLUFF - Face Oil #1 , which is 100% jojoba oil, which I used as an all natural makeup remover! Jojoba oil is super moisturizing and amazing for literally all skin types- especially acne prone and sensitive skin! 2) FLUFF cleanser , which is again - all natural - containing jojoba oil, hemp seed oil (which moisturizes without clogging pores, and balances out oily skin), ashwagandha root (which stimulates production of natural skin oils), and aloe vera (which reduces blemishes and acne, as well as lightens blemishes on the face). This cleanser does a great job of removing makeup as well as leaving you skin moisturized and soft! 3) STARFACE Moisture on Mars Hydrating Face Cream! A little bit of this product really goes a long way, leaving your face super soft, hydrated, and all with a SERIOUS glow!!! I highly recommend checking these 3 products all out! They all work great separately, but in my opinion as I have been using them cohesively, my skin has been looking and feeling great ( besides that one pimple 🙄 ). xx Isabelle
