The haircare industry is going vegan
The shift to ethical, eco-friendly and cruelty-free consumerism is being felt throughout the cosmetics sector. One area where we’re seeing a real sea-change is haircare. We combed the Internet to look at four of the most popular ranges making waves with their vegan hair products.
Together Beauty
More beauty brands are becoming increasingly focussed on creating ethical products. Together Beauty is a prime example, claiming that their products come with no added sulphates or parabens, are gluten-free, 100% vegan, colour-safe and cruelty free.
Created by award-winning New York hair stylist Sam Brocato, Together Beauty has brought together professionalism and high performance with an unequivocal ethical message.
Dreamer is Sam’s attempt to cram as much ‘beauty’ into ‘beauty sleep’ as possible. This 99% natural ‘while you sleep’ repair masque is infused with blue sage to hydrate hair and replenish lipids, so when you wake refreshed, so does your hair, glossy and silky to the touch. 
You can become a real life sleeping beauty by splashing out $28 for a 6.7 oz. tub of this magical concoction. 
Vegan hair colouring might seem like a new idea, but hair dye brand, Naturtint, has been reducing the amount of chemicals that go into their hair colours for the past 20 years. And while there is still some chemicals, such as hydrogen peroxide and PPD, no animal products are used in the manufacturing process (carried out to the highest Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards by Laboratorios Phergal in Madrid, Spain).
As you’d expect of a company that’s been in the game for so long, there’s a huge range of hair colourings on offer here, along with aftercare and styling products. If you are looking for a snazzy new hair colour, then there’s plenty of advice to help you find the right shade. 
Naturtint’s range of hair colourings aren’t as ‘out there’ as other brands we looked at, so these should appeal to those looking for a more conservative choice of hues. Of course, by using natural vegetable dye as colouring agents, this makes the brand attractive to those seeking to be more environmentally friendly, as well as those looking for a vegan option.
As every parent knows, children have a habit of changing their minds. So when one daughter asked permission to dye her hair a bright pink colour, her father, less than impressed by the list of chemicals in a standard hair colouring product, decided to create his own range of natural semi-permanent hair colourings. And so Iroiro was born.
Given the customer demographic, Iroiro’s hair colourings are more than just a bit out there, coming in a wide range of brilliant pastel colours ranging from electric yellow to deep purple, so there’s something to keep the biggest weirdo in your family happy. And as they’re semi-permanent, it’s easy to change to a more conservative hue in the event of an upcoming job interview. 
Before perusing the Iroiro’s Neon range, it’s recommended that you put some sunglasses on, these are about as bright as hair colourings get. But, free of chemicals and rich in vitamins and minerals, along with a pleasant yuzu-cranberry fragrance, these should satisfy parents and teenagers alike – especially since they’re semi-permanent.
It’s worth pointing out too, that instead of plastic bottles and jars, Iroiro has managed to reduce their carbon footprint by 70% by packaging their products in eco-pouches. Very clever.
Arctic Fox
Founded in 2014 by beauty guru Kristen Leanne and her partner Ryan Morgan, Arctic Fox might sound as it comes from the far north, but in fact hails from sunny south Cal. Like Iroiro, this is a semi-permanent brand coming in an eclectic range of garish hues. 
Again, these are 100% vegan, cruelty-free brand, containing no harsh chemicals. Additionally, the company claims to actively assist in preventing animal cruelty and donates to a number of animal welfare charities. 
The star here is undoubtedly the colouring range. Two years of research has gone into the development of Arctic Fox resulting in a product that, according to the literature, is formulated to ‘fade within the original colour spectrum’. The idea is, as the colour fades, the shades retain their tone. 
Customers can also create their own custom colour with the aid of a diluter known as Arctic Mist.
A hair-raising choice
With the brands here, we’ve only scratched the surface when it comes to the vegan hair products. Like hair itself, the number of vegan hair brands out there is growing fast. Whereas, in the past incorporating fewer animal ingredients and chemical ingredients seemed almost impossible for a truly effective hair product, especially colourings, the demand for vegan hair fashion is there and manufacturers are responding.

If you’re ever wondering how to start using retinol, this is for you! I want to start off by saying that if you’re interested in using retinol you must wear sunscreen daily. If you know you’re never going to wear it PLEASE do not use retinol. With that being said, let’s start off by explaining what retinol is and what it does for you! Retinol is Vitamin A! There are many types of retinol, like retinoids, retinol esters, etc. These are all derivatives of Vitamin A, and are more gentle and less potent versions of pure retinol. Retinol helps speed up our cell turn over rate in our skin. What that means, is that it will help you shed your dead skin cells faster to reveal new skin that’s brighter, smoother and healthier! As we get older, our “cell turnover rate” (CTR) slows down. So we use products like retinol to keep speeding it up so we can stay younger longer! Most people know retinol for treating fine lines and wrinkles, but it’s actually incredible for treating acne and acne scars! This is what I personally use it for. Retinol is strong and acts as an exfoliant so you must be careful with what products you’re using along with it in your regimen. Don’t layer or mix Vit C and retinol as they don’t like each other! Retinol should ONLY be applied at nighttime never in the morning. It makes you photosensitive which is a term to describe sensitivity to the sun. Most people experience some purging in acne, peeling/dryness, redness/irritation, and burning sensations when using a high dose of retinol without buffering it properly. If you use my buffering method properly you will not experience that at all! Now that you understand what you’re putting on your skin, I will explain how to use it! You shouldn’t start retinol by just applying it straight onto your skin without ever using it before. Your skin has to adjust to this new product and should be incorporated gently and slowly. It takes a month for your skin to adjust. You want to buffer your retinol with a gentle moisturizer. Nothing with actives like exfoliants (AHAs or BHAs)! Retinol goes after serums and before moisturizer in your routine! Week 1: use your retinol maximum 2x weekly. Start with one pea size amount of retinol and buffer it with 3 parts of moisturizer! Mix & apply to your skin! Week 2: use your retinol maximum 3x weekly. You’re going to do equal parts retinol and moisturizer. 2 parts retinol and 2 parts moisturizer. Mix & apply to your skin! Week 3: use your retinol maximum 3x weekly. Use 3 parts retinol (equal to a pea size) and 1 part moisturizer. Mix & apply to your skin! Week 4: use your retinol maximum 4x weekly. Apply a pea size amount of retinol directly onto your skin! Then apply your moisturizer directly on top of the retinol! If your skin cant handle retinol alone then stick to the buffering method forever! It will be just as effective as applying it alone! This method will minimize purging and keep your barrier healthy! What is a hair toner? A toner is a semi or demi permanent hair color that either adds or neutralizes tone in your hair- that’s where the word toner comes from. As a colorist, I use a toner on 99% of my blondes. A problem I’ve run into in the past is a new client telling me they do NOT want a toner or that they’ve been told they’re only for fixing mistakes! Let’s pause here. Without a toner your hair color will be what I call “raw blonde” aka whatever your color wants to lift to on its own. This can include uneven color from previous touch ups, or yellow or orange undertones that our hair naturally has. A toner is my weapon to help combat these uneven tones and leave your hair as our desired result. So- next time your stylist uses a toner you can ask, what color are we enhancing today?! Review time!!! I just received the entire Kylie Cosmetics Grinch Collection in the mail this week & I want to break down each product and tell you what I loved and didn’t love. Palette: I’m not one that reaches for tons of colour usually but all the greens in this palette are gorgeous! There’s a mix of matte and shimmer shades, and as usual, the shadows blend like a dream! The good thing about this palette is that there are still some neutral shades rather than just greens. I definitely appreciate the mixture of shades. Shadow Sticks: The Kylie shadow sticks are probably one of my favourite products they have ever released. They are so extremely pigmented, and so easy to apply. They’re basically fool proof, and they set as a shadow. If you haven’t tried them out, I highly suggest you do! In this collection we have a super pretty light shimmery green, light gold, and two rosy toned shadow sticks. Shimmer Eye Glazes: This product is insane. They are a super intensely pigmented eyeshadow that leaves the lids looking wet & dripping in glitter! One swipe of these on the lid is literally all you need for that intense shimmer. If you’re someone who loves super shimmery eyeshadow, I recommend giving the Kylie Cosmetics Shimmer Eye Glazes a try. This collection came with 2 shades: a minty turquoise green and a gold - & I’m obsessed and so happy to be adding these to my collection!! Olive Kyliner: My go to liquid liner is the black Kyliner, so i wasn’t surprised when i loved the easy application and long wearing quality of this olive Kyliner! The liner applies a lighter olive green and dries down to a deeper olive shade. It’s definitely not something I’d reach for everyday, although it’s definitely cute for the holidays or even for a pop of colour to a neutral eye! Blush: I am a huge fan of the Kylie Cosmetics Blushes as opposed to the other blushes I’ve tried from the brand this one had some shimmer in it! It’s quite similar to the NARS “orgasm” blush but with a stronger pink hue. I love the shimmer in it, it adds a pretty glow to the cheeks, perfect for the holidays.. or any day really :P Highlight: Def on theme, but probably my least favourite product in of the collection :( Don’t get me wrong, it’s super blinding and glowy. Although, once I applied to my face it showed off as very green. Personally I don’t want a green glow on my face! But hey, if that’s your vibe that’s cool! Definitely not a highlight I’d reach for everyday. Lip Kit: Obsessed. This red is EVERYTHING! This Lip Kit is one of the best reds I have ever tried. It has a matte finish and is extremely long wearing. I know it’s sold out but a similar shade would be “BOSS” by Kylie. Lipsticks: These shades are gorg for the holidays and I love the shade range! Long wearing & comfortable on the lips. High Glosses: Kylies high glosses are high shine, but very sticky! So if you’re not a fan of sticky glosses you won’t love these. These shades are perf for the holidays and everyday!
Hi guys!!! I’ve been so obsessed with this recently! Ponytails are my favorite when I’m running late! Putting a little braid in the ponytail makes it look so cute!! This takes me literally 5 minutes and I LOVE IT😍😍 HOW TO: -gather your hair into a ponytail -secure it with a hair tie -grab a little section of hair from the ponytail -section it into 3 parts -and braid all the way down! ☺️ ✨TIP✨(you can always add a couple more mini braids in the ponytail) I feel like that would be so cute!
