Why You Should Use Kojic Acid to ✨Brighten up Your Dull Skin
Jun. 8, 2020
If you ever tried to reduce the appearance of dark spots or brighten the appearance of your skin, then you've probably heard of kojic acid. Kojic acid is a chemical produced by many different types of fungi. It is also a byproduct of fermented soy sauce and rice wine. This product has been used in the food industry as a natural preservative, but one of its main and most popular uses is in health and cosmetic products.
Kojic acid primarily works by inhibiting an enzyme in the body that is necessary for the production of melanin. By blocking this enzyme, it helps to fade dark spots and discoloration on your skin. If you are looking to improve the discoloration of your skin or you cannot tolerate the effects of hydroquinone, then kojic acid is an ideal product for you.
Kojic acid has many benefits for your skin. It can:
- Reduce the effects of aging. Because kojic acid is a skin brightening and lightening product, it can improve the appearance of age spots and sun damage. The reduction of dark spots and the evening of skin tone results in an anti-aging effect, making the user look younger.
- Lessen the appearance of scars. If you're dealing with acne scars, kojic acid can reduce the discoloration that comes with these scars. Unfortunately, this acid does nothing to reduce the thickness of the scar tissue. It only affects the dark pigmentation that can be associated with certain types of scars. The lightening of the scar pigmentation can make the scar less noticeable overall.
- Treat melasma. For some people, pregnancy comes with a darkening of the skin. This is known as melasma. Melasma is a common pigmentation disorder that can cause ugly brown patches to appear on the skin. The most common areas for melasma are the bridge of the nose, the forehead, and the cheeks. Kojic acid can reduce the appearance of this disorder, restoring your skin to an even, bright tone.
- Have anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. Kojic acid also has the potential to have anti-fungal and antibacterial benefits. This acid may help prevent and treat certain fungal infections, such as yeast infections and athlete's foot. It also may help decrease the chances of bacterial skin infections. Both of these properties aren't 100% proven, but there is plenty of positive information saying that kojic acid has these benefits.
Kojic acid is safe to use in cosmetics up to a concentration of 1%. Even though this is a very small percentage, some people can still experience side effects or risk from its use.
The most common side effect of kojic acid is contact dermatitis. Contact dermatitis can include skin irritation, itchiness, rashes, swollen skin, redness, or pain and discomfort. This side effect is most common in people that suffer from sensitive skin or people who are using a product that has a higher concentration than 1% of kojic acid inside the product. If you are experiencing contact dermatitis from a product that has kojic acid inside of it, then it's best to stop using that product.
Long-term side effects of kojic acid can be that your skin is more susceptible to sunburn. If you are planning to use kojic acid for a long time, then it's very important to make sure you are using sunscreen and wearing sun-protective clothing at the same time. Finally, you should not use kojic acid on damaged or broken skin.
How to use it
In general, kojic acid can be used daily, but it ultimately depends on what other ingredients are in the product and what the concentration of kojic acid is. If your skin is super sensitive, then it's probably not a good idea to start using kojic acid daily. Instead, it's more beneficial to use it once or twice a week and build up to daily as you get used to the products.
Studies have shown that kojic acid can work well and enhance the effects of glycolic acid and hydroquinone. However, when it comes to using kojic acid along with other brightening and exfoliating ingredients, you are running the risk of suffering from excessive dryness and skin irritation. It's important to ease into using kojic acid products in your skincare regime and give your skin time to acclimate to its ingredients so that you can have the best possible results.
My Top 5 Foundations for Oily Skin
Here are my top 5 foundations for oily/combination/acne prone skin! These are by no means my only favorite foundations, just the ones I keep going back to. 1. ESTĒE LAUDER - Double Wear Stay-in-Place Foundation This matte, oil-free foundation controls oil all day. It’s sweat, heat and humidity-resistant, waterproof and 24-hour colour true. With buildable, medium-to-full coverage that feels lightweight and so comfortable. No touchups needed. Best for hot weather/ holidays. The only Downside is that it doesn’t come with a pump 2. MAYBELLINE - Fit Me! Matte & Poreless Foundation This foundation is a must have if you are looking for a good drugstore option for oily skin. It’s super affordable and gives a beautiful finish without feeling heavy on the skin. 3. HUDA BEAUTY - Fauxfilter Foundation is perfect for you if you are looking for full coverage. Just a couple of pumps go a long way. However, the formula isn’t ideal for anyone with dry skin or for people sensitive to string fragrances. 4. L'ORÉAL - Infallible Pro-Matte Liquid Longwear Foundation This formula blends unbelievably well and you can build this to completely full coverage! ! I'm beyond impressed for this being drugstore. 5. The Ordinary - Colours Coverage Foundation with SPF 15 this is my everyday foundation and gives good enough coverage. I just have to mix two different shades to get my color as the range is quiet limited but for the price I pay, I don’t mind. Always stay away form words like “dewy”, “luminous”, “shiny” , “glowy” if you have oily skin. Let me know if you have any questions.

New moisturizer alert!✨
So I took the advice of many on my last post and decided to drop the Murad - Nutrient-Charged Water Gel . I was disappointed to do so, considering I have had such great luck in the past with other Murad products, but sadly this wasn’t it for me! Although this stuff went on like BUTTER, I found out it had some pretty heavy duty sulfate properties in it, which is a big no-no for my pores and acne prone skin. The fragrance was also incredibly strong, which I didn’t quite mind as that stuff has never truly bothered me in the past, but after a weird breakout once incorporating that product, as well as the COSRX - Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence, and reading all the kind and helpful replies, I said goodbye to the moisturizer and returned it for.....🥁🥁🥁 COSRX - Propolis Light Cream !!! Now, finally an entire K-Beauty routine!! I have only been using the cream for about two days, however, it’s genuinely as soft as the Murad moisturizer , if not more. Plus, NO fragrance! and NO sulfates!!!! The last two days I’ve woken up, my skin has for once felt so hydrated in the morning, not too oily, and not too dry! I will keep tabs on this one for sure, before I give it too much credit, but I think she’s likely to stay safe and sound in my routine 😂 Have you ever tried this product? What did you think?!
Trying to find the culprit... HELP!
Ever since I’ve added these two new products, I’ve noticed a couple new breakouts in places i’ve never experienced!!! They are red painful pimples too. Two on my forehead (I never get them there) , one on the outside of my nostril (i never get them there either), and the weirdest singular pimple on my NECK! Both of these products I have used on my face and neck, however, I’m not sure what product or ingredient is causing the sudden breakout!! Or is it just purging??? Help!!!!!! Did anyone else experience this with these products??? COSRX - Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence Murad - Nutrient-Charged Water Gel
